Let's make a sci-fi setting /tg/

>Faster than light travel is achieved by the use of the microverse, a parallel dimension to our own at a 1 trillion to 1 scale. Simply jump in, travel in the microverse for a while, and then jump out again having travelled trillions of miles while actually having only travelled a few, relatively speaking.

Don't ask what happens when you crash into a planet while travelling at 500,000 micromiles a second

Traveling in the microverse would appear to have nothing to do with going fast. Distances are just shorter. As such, impacting a planet after emerging from the microverse should be no more nor less deadly than impacting the planet after traveling through real space.

Pic related is a rough image of how it would work. Basically: You can get from point A to B in 100 miles in the real universe by traveling in a straight line, or you can get from point A to B by starting at A, hopping into the microverse, traveling 25 miles, and then hopping out.

Only it's much less than 25 miles. This is just for ease of understanding.

I assume planets in the microverse are so small it would be like hitting specks of dust with your car.

It's also possible that the microverse is empty. Or that planets don't even form at all.

If the Sun, for example, was 1 trillionth the size it is now, it would have a mass of only 1.989 × (10^18) kg, which is less than Ceres, the largest object in the asteroid belt (9.39 x (10^20) kg, or about 4% the mass of the Moon). This is too small for any kind of fusion to take place.

You would shrink too, which makes this form of travel pointless

What if microphysics scale so everything is "regular", just micro

I just really like the idea of a human-sized spaceship plowing through galaxies and superclusters like drifts of snow under your tires.

If there were any planets in the microverse, there won't be after a few years of us driving around the universe.

Shit, posted too soon.

Okay, to expand upon this: while it's easy to forget sometimes given that we know about stars like VY Canis Majoris, our star, Sol, is BIG. Like, it's in the top 10% of stars in the Galaxy in terms of size. 90% of all stars are notably smaller than it.

So if it was shrunk to 1 trillionth the mass, it would never have had the kind of energy needed for fusion to take place, meaning that the Sun could never have formed in the first place - and if the Sun couldn't, then 90% of all stars couldn't have, either. And for that matter most stars that are bigger, too.

Even VY Canis Majoris, one of the largest stars that we know of (it's about 17 (+/- 8) times more massive than the Sun), when shrunk to 1 trillionth the mass, would have a mass of just 5.967 × (10^19) kg - still smaller than Ceres, in other words.

So given that, it's possible that atoms in the microverse just never collected into stars, meaning that fusion of hydrogen and helium into heavier elements never took place, meaning the vast majority of the microverse that isn't empty space is instead made up of disparate helium and hydrogen atoms. Indeed with presumably only one-trillionth the mass it's possible that the microverse never even experienced a "big bang" in the sense of all its matter being collected into a single point and then exploding, and instead it just consists of free-floating hydrogen and maybe helium atoms.

The microverse is powered by the Oolians, physical beings the act as batteries and hold vast amounts of energy in their bodies.

>every time you go FTL via the microverse a millions Oolians are drained and die
>every one still uses FTL all the time but they feel really guilty about it
>#standwithOolians

>humanity are an accidental addition to the galactic stage, as abductees couldn't be returned to earth under galactic law, and have instead been crammed into ghettos attached to various embassies. Treated as second class citizens with very few rights, they make up a relatively tiny population of galactic civilisation

I love settings like this.

If someone wants some HFY that isn't about how we breathe rocket fuel and piss poison, give it a read.

>thankfully, faster than light communication does exist, though requires huge relay nodes to communicate over these huge distances, which is then disseminated into smaller and smaller nodes until it reaches it's recipient. Protecting these massive nodes is considered of the utmost importance, and destroying one is generally considered to be the equivalent of a warcrime.

Plot twist. The few remaining people from the microverse stage an invasion of our universe. Upon arriving in our universe they become 1 trillion times larger
