That Rare Frown

Recruited into the Travellers after a bungled universe jump planted a number of members in the middle of a civil war. His potential, both as a Traveller and a combatant, peaked their interested and as soon as the battle began to wind down they essentially abducted him to Ae, though Allen barely resisted being in a near-catatonic state.

Formerly a royal bodyguard to a tyrant queen, a final attempt to ruse the revolutionaries and save his Queen failed and he watched her cut down before his eyes. Overtaken by rage, he slaughtered nearly all responsible before he was knocked out, only to awaken in a room bathed in blood and these strange figures.
>>
>>53904246

Since arriving, he has slowly been pulled out of his funk, though something vital is still missing from his life. He was placed under the care of Salah ad-Din to nurture his natural talents, and he has made friends with several other people who are either younger than most travelers or otherwise outcasts, and he plans to form a Cohort as a support group. He continues to visit his native timeline to check up on his adoptive sister from the shadows, for even now he cares for her.

Allen is skilled in swordplay, battlefield tactics, politics, diplomacy, long-term planning, cooking, cleaning, and various other menial tasks as he was previously a servant. He's also a very competent bodyguard, though he no longer has anyone left to 'guard'. If someone important enough came along, he might pledge his blade to them.

>It outright mentions male callers in the broodmother section.
No, it mentions people who were male before being turned into Nightmare Callers.
>>
>>53904011

You've clearly not dug around on the internet enough if you think that would stop someone who gets off on figurines or tiny girls. I've seen enough videos to prove otherwise.

It also doesn't hurt that the girls are dedicated to their so-called husband, so they would probably be eager to work something out.
>>
>>53904265
All nightmare callers are little girls, that reference just talks about callers who were previously men having harder time adjusting.
>>
>>53904258
Most cyoas refer to you as male or explicitly require you to man, try to survive the single cyoa that has you be girl instead
>>

>>
>>53903304

>>
>>53903345
What's the point of having a base with that points limit? Focusing only on personal items seems more efficient for battle.
>>
>>53904299
>Most cyoas refer to you as male or explicitly require you to man
Let's be real here for a second, the vast majority of people that play cyoa's on this board are males. So of course the majority of cyoa's made are going to be targeted towards males.

>try to survive the single cyoa that has you be girl instead
It's not just this one, I've seen tons of cyoa's that make you be a little girl. It's fucking weird and forces me to completely skip a cyoa that could of been very promising.

Could use some advice anons; I'm working on another adventure CYOA (a couple actually, but who knows which ones will ever see the light of day) and wanted some thoughts on class and skill balancing.

I'm leaning towards just doing something like I did for Blackrock Dungeoneering where you pick a class and a specialisation, but with more choices. Did this work okay for you guys, or should I look into just having a menu of skills you can choose from to build your own class as it were, or even both; pick a class and a special skill and then some back up skills from a generic list?

I kind of like having classes myself, writing them up helps me add a little flavour.
>>
>>53904391
It's meant to be multiplayer CYOA
>>
>>53904432
Do what feels best to write. That's what keeps you interested in finishing something. If you feel that classes help you add flavor, and you like that, then by all means do that.
>>

>>
>>53904432
>pick a class and a special skill and then some back up skills from a generic list
This is probably the best choice. If you are really, really good at writing, then having just a list of skills can work but it can easily become a too generic. Classes give a lot of flavour and personality but it can be a problem if they become too restricting.

Like in Blackrock, having access to healing was major consideration, especially before the companion changes. Being able to pick up generic healing skill probably wouldn't be nowhere near as good as actual healing focused Godhand but it would remove a bit of pressure from "am I going to suffer death by thousand cuts?", thus making other classes seem more viable.

Is it actually possible to take any class but Reclaimer? Since you're stuck in the dungeon with no option to come back and resupply, the party needs some way of getting food, and apart from the Lair, it's not as if food is going to just be readily available.

None of the companions seem to have Reclaimer skill either, so if you don't take it, you can't even cover it with other members.

A smuggler of renown, works for the couriers due to his skill in getting large cargo from one place to another. Looked down upon by many for his bad habits, he remains upbeat, if only because hes about to ask his friends for a loan. Skilled in complicated plans, especially when they revolve around cheating in games of chance, and this carries through to his combat style, using cheap tactics, and finishes fights in the easiest way possible.

His airship is dressed up as a traditional blimp, even though the 'baloon' is just hollow and lined with floating stone. While not the most skilled pilot in the ranks, Lucas is still up there as one of the better airship pilots around.

Most lizards aren't that fatty though because they don't need to store a lot of fat. If a dragon is warmblooded through conventional means then it would have a good reason to have a lot of fat, but if it's basically a reptile with magic fire breath then it has no reason to store that much fat, and being a flying creature extra fat would be a rather bad thing.
>>
>>53905145
The extra fat is essential for sleeping on piles of gold though since it will provide natural cushioning.

Also, even magical fire breath can't stop the natural wastage of muscle mass to fat reserves. How many dragons do you think go for daily jogs around their domains?
>>
>>53905219
That wastage isn't a thing for reptiles, they can sleep or sit still for very long periods of time and see no decrease in muscle mass.

Sometimes. A lot of personality traits I write into characters are things I've picked up from various people I've interacted with personally. Especially in terms of conversation, I base a lot of speech off of speech patterns I'm familiar with, whether I intend to or not. I try not to follow how people speak in movies or television because I find that they usually aren't that natural sounding, as it's part of the nature of acting.

Sometimes I base character speech patterns over audio samples, like interviews or podcasts.

It's incomplete and getting expanded, kind of. It's currently 4th/5th in line for my WIPs.

Basically I'm not really going to change much about this CYOA in particular, except that I'm gonna focus it more on living in the city as a mentor/researcher.

Then im gonna do a separate CYOA about building spells and acquiring patents for said spells. You'll be able to tie this one in somehow, something along the lines of the students giving you certain benefits for spellcrafting like more efficient mana outputs or cheaper acquisition of mana-tech parts.

I need some opinions here. I'm making my first CYOA, and my idea to make it where you are a villain who is being hunted for whatever you did. And so, you must make your character (race, sex, classe, some nice traits), choose who wants to kill you, then make your stronghold or dungeon (with lackeys, traps, cells, rape room , etc) and, at last, create another character which will play as some kind of arch enemy.
You start off with 0 points and the more you invest in your character and dungeon (basically, the more you owe points), the more you will need to invest in your arch enemy (who can easily become more powerful than you). Thus, you have to balance things out or you will lose (about that, I'm trying to fit in a small """""combat"""""" system so you can actually have a win/lose condition).

Is it too overloaded with stuff? Does it interest you at all? Should I add more to it?
>>
>>53906139

>Good luck getting her expelled
I don't think this one incident will get her expelled, but showing up for official interviews drunk, along with the public drunkenness in general, is going to see her get heavily reprimanded and hopefully put on some form of probation, including an expulsion from the program. This will hopefully teach her that her actions have consequences.

You may be right. This act might put a bad word on her head, especially in a society that takes mentors quite seriously. I doubt she'll get expulsion from the program though, nor would it probably mean she would receive probation.

You're supposed to judge her based on the character description. If you don't like her, that's fine. Some people apparently are fine with her. You just seem to be the kind of mentor who intolerates that sort of behaviour.

But you are certainly wrong by calling her an alcoholic, anon. What Marie did may be stupid, but alcoholism is a completely different problem.

Fairly sure she had to walk to the interview, and I would consider being excessively drunk and irritating the interviewer and myself with her drunken ramblings and poor excuses to be bothering people.

Learn to math. If every month had 30 days, there'd be an even split between 1-15 and 16-30. So half the people would be born before the 16th, and half on or after the 16th. But there's seven months with 31, and one with 28 and change. Which means the average month has more than 30 days, so the average person is more likely to be born on or after the 16th.

I mean, it probably depends on how seriously they take their program, but I know of a master's student who got expelled after getting wasted at a social function that the university planned and which some relatively prominent people attended. I'm not even talking harassing anybody or something like that.
I personally really can't imagine going drunk into an interview with a at least somewhat respected person and not getting at least quite heavily punished.

I think you have me confused for someone else, because I never mentioned that. I definitely dislike it, but it's not an absolute deal breaker or anything for me. It's rather that her entire introduction, instead of with the others giving some more insight who they are, is just this drunk shtick. >>53906506
I guess I phrased it in a very weird manner. Anyway, backstory is going to be up to the reader. If you don't want to bother with it, just don't, if you like to invest in more context, you can give it some of your own.

There's only so much you can represent in a character. What do you think would have made her more interesting in terms of points? I think I could've made her talk a bit more about her academics, but to be honest, I kind of ran out of space.

She's supposed to be a risky character. You're supposed to take her word that she didn't mean to make such a bad impression and that she really does live up to her 3.8 GPA. I guess I'll keep her in mind for the rewrites.

Not sure what that particular anon's problem with it is, and without knowing the options to choose from I can't say whether I have a problem with it or not, but you might want to consider having a few difficulty modes to choose from (like >>53905826 does). Generally, cyoas that start you off with 0 points end up being balanced in such a way that you're forced to take crippling drawbacks, multiple nemeses, or cost-reducing flaws in what few things you can afford.

Outside of sub fetishism cyoas where the whole point is being forced to take drawbacks, cyoas that start with 0 points are invariably poorly balanced and readers get the sense that there's no way to succeed without suffering a bunch of distasteful options.
>>
>>53906793

This is how I fight a war. Not through brute force, not through surprise attacks, but simply by removing trust from the equation. Paranoia reigns, people having to constantly live in lit places. Then once it reaches a maximum, this happens.

>be guard

>new community, flat space, lit at all times, surrounded by wall

>mfw they were each carrying hunters

There you have it. Every little advantage they think they have is gone eventually, every countermeasure is nullified. By now, half the killcounts would be by vigilantes who try to root out infiltrators, or just plain suicides by people who can't bear the paranoia. I can live amongst humans through infiltrators or glamours, and if I'm bored of that I can just play as a stalker.

I don't feel like I can really give concrete advice, because I'm not really sure what kind of character she is supposed to be. Just anything that would give a better feel of who she really is supposed to be. Give me some background info or something that reflects who she is and not what just happened. Having her do her interview drunk is fine, just don't make it completely about the being drunk, because her character basically becomes 'the person who is drunk in an interview', which really isn't that interesting in my opinion. In the end we don't even know what she normally is like personality wise (besides 'hides herself behind a veil of competence').

>She's supposed to be a risky character
That's perfectly fine. I think the idea is fine, the execution just fails in my opinion, because not only does she offer a risk which the other characters don't, but also because she actually offers less than other characters as is. Unless someone is just really, really into board games (which isn't that unlikely on /tg/ I guess, but even then it's possible that personalities don't match up), I don't see what would motivate people to think that it's worth to take the risk.
>>
>>53907542
>Unless someone is just really, really into board games
This is /tg/, and we're completely starved for waifus. Everyone makes /v/ waifus or /a/ waifus or /fit/ waifus or /k/ waifus, but /tg/ waifus are such an afterthought that we'll take the drunk as long as she's up for Catan.
>>
>>53906880
Honestly, I think the biggest problem is that due to the nature of cyoas, we will never get any form of resolution. In a more interactive medium this would be fine, because after making the choice you could be told what she is like, but as it is, she is basically a mystery option that won't ever get revealed. I have no desire to even imagine any kind of 'builds' including her, because I would have to basically make all her core personality up and at that point, why even play the cyoa?

Also, the information density is really low in her text. It makes sense considering she is supposed to be drunk, but that doesn't make it any more fun to read.
>>
>>53907598
It's pretty weird now that I think about it. You get the occasional companion who is a nice dm or something like that, but otherwise there's not much. Still, one short line saying "favourite pastime: boardgames' shouldn't have that much effect, right?

Can't the hero and I just talk through our differences over a small meal?

I swear this is all a misunderstanding. If you think about it, eating meat is bad for your digestive system so I did that village a huge favour by eating all their cattle for them. Sure, I might have soured relationships when I stole and ate the wedding cake and that lavish buffet at that orc-elven wedding but we all know how difficult having sex with a full stomach can be so in a way I saved their wedding night. Yes, kidnapping the princess until the King removed his ban on sugar was questionable but don't you think the children of the kingdom are entitled to candy?

Just come and sit down with me. I cooked this beef with this nifty flaming orb I borrowed from a nearby temple. A-at least now we know it still works and its fire is really divine! Just like this flavour. Yummy.

Information density is part of the problem because I had attempted to make her explain her situation in the text box given while drunk. I will admit, for most of them, that I focused more on speech pattern than information exposition, but in her case, it was a matter of running out of space.

I like the way she introduces herself and her current situation. I spent more time writing her than I wanted to though, but that's cause it's hard for me to write a drunk person trying to keep their composure while explaining themselves, and failing. But you're right, that isn't enough. I think I might just make bigger text boxes but that would mean I'd have to add more to the other descriptions, which I don't mind. I'm going to try and make her sound more intelligent.

Originally she was at 4.1 GPA, but I thought that was too much. She was originally more bitchy, too.

I will have own heavens garden as sanctum, learn magic, I will train my angels to use modern weapons, will fuse their smite into ifles, angelic blades will be made into bullets, pentagrams of protection into vests, crystals of soul-binded energy grenades. I will make pact with lesser demons to incite civil war in Hell. Minor city circled with soul devouring hexagrams so I can siphon energies into me and my servants. In burgerland, some advanced courses have GPA scales that are shifted upwards by 1 point to reflect the increased difficulty of the coursework and tests.

It's less common in universities, but high schools tend to have quite a few of the classes, or allow you to take college courses while in high-school as if they were such classes. In my graduation year, there was one student with a 4.6 GPA because he took almost nothing but the advanced classes and cut out any non-mandatory regular classes that could drag his GPA down.

7xInfantry Squad (49)

This is all about holding the line and protecting mankind, by providing food and having an innate danger sense I'll be able to alleviate a bit of the stress and horror. Ill suited for rapid deployment obviously, but such is the life of civilian protection. The mixture of food supplies, medical supplies and protecting your kinsmen should be more than enough to keep moral in top condition.

Marie-Claude's a serious competitor for me, because she fits what I am looking for in a protege to tee.

Spellcraft Theory
High GPA
Not ow the edge

I'm always looking for an edge. I'm looking for an up and comer in regards to forming new spells and applications. It would be intensely useful to my career field to have someone with education in the latest theory.

Cicely is Marie-Claude's only real competition. Cicely's interests match what I am looking for better than Marie-Claude's do. Coupled with Marie-Claude being drunk when I attempted to interview her, Cicely would be a shoe-in, but I can't shake the feeling that she was coming on to me. Highly inappropriate.

>Alien
Item that grants powerful boost with no downsides. Was a toss up between this and Genetic but figured I could practice myself but can't replace the space gem on my own.

>Emotional (Fixed) 40
Permanently amused. May not always be appropriate but at least I'll have a nice time.

>Physical , Mental, Spiritual (No Change)
No alterations here as generally didn't seem worth it when compared with the superpowers.

>Life (Prime) 25
Immortality tax.

>Memory (Dissonance)
Seemed more interesting than just being one guy.

>Mind Control (Flawless) 5
Spent nearly all the points on this but then casual mind control is always pretty great. More or less makes me a supernatural harem protagonist. Plus it helps with both having fixed emotions and sleepwalking. Generally good for getting out of trouble as well.

>Healing (Self Service, Miracle) -5
Took healing as it seems a viable alternative to Vitality and is flashier as it works on other people.

>Charm -8
Charm makes me more likable and generally makes everything a bit easier.

>Sleepwalker -3
Should at least only result in shenanigans that I can cover up with excessive use of mind control.

>Guardian (Ally)

>Leah Dawson
>Victoria Bainbridge
Witch girl and ghost girl to clue me in about the magic world.

>Scarlet Manning (Guardian)
Means I'm adopted into a super rich family which may or may not have something to do with me being a mind controller. Also she's inclined to treat me like the help which sounds like something that will result in ironic consequences.

>Lorie Copeland
Might as well be stoned if I'm already going to be permanently giggly.

>Jane Farley
And having someone with guns and survival experience can't hurt if I have to run away due to people finding out I'm an alien experiment.

You start the rules explanation for picking the type of girl you want with reference to exception that's on far later page. Don't do that.

Explain the rules first completely, then make a small note that Construction event allows mixing of types and explain the event rules on it's own section.

How many girls am I supposed to pick? What are slots? What hull sizes are there? If these are explained later, state it so that I don't spend time looking back to check if I missed some rules. I guess the difference between girls within a type is only cosmetic?

Other than what I complained about, this is readable tho.

You think you can get away with saying that shit to her over the Internet? Think again, fucker. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. She can be anywhere, anytime, and She can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with her bare feet. Not only is She extensively trained in unarmed combat, but she has access to the entire arsenal of freeport 0-5 and She will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. Sure the defenders may be immune, but the point isn't to target the enemies fit for fighting anyway. Regardless, even if they send defenders to counter, that's less defenders fighting my allies.

Stalkers, Infiltrators, Possession, Direct Control, training, spectacle, all of these allow for me to lie low until an opportunity presents itself. Nothing causes more despair in a person or population than "Be on your guard at all times. If you rest, or even sleep, you will die horribly."

Which is why governments always follow the word of every person under their control unanimously, and without question, and without keeping anything secret, and somehow finding a way to also fulfill everybody's desires even if they may be entirely contradictory.

The Ravagers are sick, monstrous creatures. The thought that they would all apparently unanimously side with the absurd notion that all humans are responsible for a completely secret research organization, and that humanity deserves to die for its mere existence suggests that either it was intentional and they're all completely bonkers, or that the author (probably Beri) is a misanthrope who can't logic good.

I transfer 10 points to 2 allies (doesn't matter which I'll enslave them all eventually) and they in turn each put 14 into familiars. Since the plan is to teleport/isolate and dronify them none of their powers can provide them any warning or means of escape. If all goes well I will have access to 88 points worth of powers which can, in time, be reverse engineered and applied to other drones without taking any drawbacks that are not.

As a dimensional traveller you gotta have a base of operations, plus while time is frozen inside the dimension while I'm not in it, time isn't frozen outside when I'm in it. Plus storage space for goodies looted from around the multiverse, and the nifty features mentioned in Pocket, if I have power armour I can make it poof onto my body from a mannequin.
