Villains who are only villains from a certain point of view.
>>
Villains who are putting the interests of a small group ahead of the interests of the majority, not because they're selfish but out of loyalty.

Villains who are legitimately doing the right thing, but they're twats about it and it's still a bad thing for the protagonists.

Villains who have such long-term plans that everything they're doing right now is actually good, but they're going to be leveraging it for evil later.
>>
Villains who tyrannically oppress the world who are later justified when the world's society collapses after said villain's defeat.
>>
>>53870275
Villains who put themselves under immense pressure and eventually something just gives and they lose some critical part of their humanity.
>>
>>53870275
Villain is greedy, selfish, and in general just trying to get to the top of the pile but is also likable and explains their stance well enough that it almost seems right.

Everyone is just trying to get their cut of the pie right? What's so evil about taking opportunities given to you to make life easier for yourself and your own?
>>

>Villains who are legitimately doing the right thing, but they're twats about it

This is normally the quickest way to die for any NPC. Players don't take lip from NPCs, they could be jesus reborn, but the moment they belittle a player they are normally dead.

I've played with some vindictive and petty players

The Bounty Hunter was one of the more threatening enigmas on the Battletech battlefields. Adding to his(?) mystique was the fact that the figure known as "The Bounty Hunter" made appearances over a span that would be impossible for a normal human to live, implying it's more of an identity than a single person. The Bounty Hunter's impressive arsenal of advanced mechs also added to the threat posed by his appearance. Giant mechs painted bright green covered in credit symbols wasn't exactly stealthy either.

>A man-eating monster attuned to the realm of spirits.
>Doesn't actually enjoy eating humans
>Is doing so in an attempt to catch the grim reaper, because the old bones have to get up close and personal to take the souls he's eaten

>An ancient dragon teaching the secrets of magic to the masses, because he needs a small city's worth of mage-blood for a ritual
>the ritual would likely bring life back to a massive chunk of the world, which has become supernaturally barren

>Arms dealer who uses exotic pet sales as a front for his operations

Exactly. That's what I love about him. No abusive childhood, no bullshit "I'm doing this horrible stuff now to take us to a brighter future" agenda, no "society made this happen," not even the "POWER, PURE POWER" wankoffery of 1984, he's just. Having. FUN. Not that that makes him any less of a menace, it's just that I find his motivations refreshing somehow. Same will Bill. And they do it all without (quite) being edgelords. They're what 40k Chaos should be like. Especially Tzeentch. If GW had any brains at all they'd make his personality a cross between Aku and Bill Cipher.
>>
Villains that aren't bad, but actually good but they're such annoying fucking cunts that you can't help but make them your enemy.
>>
The villain is kind and loyal to his supporters and allies, and is forced into conflict not because he's evil but because of irreconcilable differences in viewpoint or competition for resource scarcity.

I'm also a sucker for Dr. Doom types that rule with an iron fist inside a velvet glove. The citizens of Latveria are among the happiest in the world and are willing to die for Doom, he in turn genuinely wants his nation to prosper and will crush anyone that gets in his way.

I also enjoy genuinely, 100% unrepentant evil enemies. No ulterior motives, no sob story to justify their actions, they're just bad to the bone and love it. The Violator from Spawn, Diablo, Orcus.

So sick of "the villain used to be a hero and was corrupted into something dark and twisted" or "he had a hard life and never had a chance. Banter is so much more fun when the bad guy revels in his work and doesn't spend the whole time trying to guilt trip the heroes or persuade them he is right.

Villains whose motives are utterly selfless, and born out of a sense of betrayal, jadedness, but ultimately for the good of somebody else- it doesn't need to be everyone, or even a very large group, just someone other than the villain.

Pic related is the perfect example. He's dedicated to something other than himself, he knows that what he's doing is so terribly, utterly wrong, and he's leading a group of followers that are utterly loyal to him because he was once (and arguably still is) a paragon.

He has a specific plan in mind to get what he wants with the least amount of pain and suffering, but due to the MC's meddling things deteriorate rapidly. When forced to kill people he would have once called friends he's visibly shaken, and when it becomes clear his men are taking things too far he does everything he can to stop them- even helping the men he was trying to kill earlier.

6 million dead Jews wasn't based on an estimate of potential Jews who could have been born based on population growth figures. That's a huge difference in methodology. If the same standards were applied to the Holocaust you'd end up with 18 million dead Jews, slightly over the total Jewish population in Europe.

6 million Jews didn't die from a famine either; thry were systematically targeted & killed.

Nobody is denying China suffered a famine, what is being argued here is scope & culpability.

Motivation born out of a want for change, whether on a societal level or a personal level. Essentially, those who are trying something new that is either considered taboo, trying something in a manner frowned upon, or a combination of the two.

I also like it when a villain cannot really be called as such; when he simply doesn't mesh with the status quo. He's merely doing things the only way he can think to do them. I think the purest form of expression is doing what comes most naturally to you, acting upon impulses, intuition, and common sense. In the case of a villain, in a manner which is regarded as being societally unacceptable.

How's this for a "Villain"?
He's a friend of the party that turns out to be a time traveler.

His original timeline was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, so he traveled back to try and stop it. He failed again in the new timeline, so he sent the version of himself from this timeline back to hopefully get things right. This new version of him failed as well, and the cycle repeated.
This cycle has repeated over 100 times by now, and the plan to save the universe has gotten more and more complex and refined, but every time he switches timelines the timeline he leaves behind is completely destroyed. As a result the party always tries to stop him and is always killed by him.

Plot twist is that the time traveler is actually a member of the party, and is wracked with guilt over watching his predecessor kill his best friends in the previous timeline.

During the most recent time traveler's confrontation with the party, he'll find a way to incapacitate the party without killing them (probably something really simple, to add extra angst over his friends from his previous timeline being killed), and then the party can try to convince him to stop the time machine and try to stop the cataclysm in their timeline.

>>An ancient dragon teaching the secrets of magic to the masses, because he needs a small city's worth of mage-blood for a ritual
>>the ritual would likely bring life back to a massive chunk of the world, which has become supernaturally barren

This one is interesting.
In the grand scheme of things, the common races are young. This world has a long and rich history, civillisations of titans have risen to greater heights than you and I could ever fathom and fallen, to depths so deep as to destroy the minds of mortals if they were ever to peer down into that dark abyss

For that dragon, that world is over. The once great nature spirits have retreated into the feywild, half-remembered by pagans worshipping sticks and bones in the mud. The giants have left behind their retarded children and escaped to their cities in the clouds.
Even the dragon's own kind, those proud, honourable serpentine gods, have fallen to fear and greed and hate. Nowadays to be named a dragon is a curse, for your own brother would strike you down for more gold in their own already needlessly extravagant hoard.

The inheritors of this world are tiny things who have walked the land for barely a moment and yet they claim it as their own. What have they achieved in that time, with the gifts that they have? Nothing. Toy nations of cloth and stone playing at war, scratching the surface of the secrets of this universe and using them for parlour tricks.

That dragon has a chance of starting a new golden age, healing a broken scarred world and returning it to its former glory. For mortalkind to be so proud as to stand in the way of that and claim their castles and childlike philosophies are more important? It cannot stand, and it shall not.

To the old world, that dragon is a saviour.

i'm the dm of a supers group, so an awful lot of villains show up. i like tying every one of them to one of the party members, having their motivations be something that the party has struggled with. one of my party members is someone who has a lot of trouble controlling their powers and always risks hurting the people close to them, so one of our villains has powers at a similar scale but use them freely in order to combat injustice directly- except the injustice they're combatting is all of the people who judge them because of their power. (also the cops, because fuck the cops)

i like to have moments where the party realizes what a villain is after and one of the players really sees themselves in that, and in tailoring the villains to be tempting to one particular party member i can really hone in on that.

it's even better when you can hone a villain to a relationship BETWEEN two party members, and have them fight the living embodiment of something getting in the way of the two of them as characters. but that's harder to write for

I get he's a wanted criminal, but the OP universe is such a crapsack world where the people at the top tend to be monsters because might makes right, and not being strong usually means needing someone who is both strong and altruistic to protect you. That isn't even possible. Putting aside the technical limitations (there are many), socialism itself is a doomed ideal until we solve scarcity.
Otherwise, it becomes a ticking timebomb of the masses, those whom would normally be ether too stupid, violent or sick to survive DO survive, and breed (and due to how humans are wired, the worse they are at maintaining civilization the more children they will have). These new generations of the stupid, violent and sick now require food and care, and there are more of them. This continues until it is no longer sustainable.

Essentially, you keep sacrificing the future due to your unwillingness to do what needs to be done now (ether by inventing the tech required to sustain such masses, or by letting them die).
Until technology can support an endlessly growing population, Socialism in all it's forms is a pipe dream, a bomb. A drug that feeds on empathy. Cancer is probably the best metaphor for socialism imo.
I also haven't even gotten into the numerous social issues that would arise.

I guess my point is, the starvation is coming. How bad it hits depends on how long you put it off. Besides, I've yet to be convinced capitalism will turn out so poorly, or that there arn't better alternatives to capitalism the socialism which again, is a ideology akin to cancer

>until we solve scarcity.
How is the idea of socialism related to scarcity?
That's a critique I often hear being directed at communism, where it is valid since a post-scarcity economy is a requisite of communism.
>those whom would normally be ether too stupid, violent or sick to survive DO survive, and breed
They still breed under capitalism. Artists, scientists and social workers are often forced to neglect their children because they have to work in order to survive under capitalism. Socialism assesses people's needs and abilities first and foremost, which means that more inequalities and calamities will be taken care of, so that more people have a chance to educate themselves and solve their own problems.
Capitalism on the other hand benefits the most ruthless and unscrupulouos the most, encouraging egotism and forming a dog-eat-dog society and pretending that's perfectly fine.
It also creates the artificial value that is money, which often has nothing to do with what people actually need, and more to do with devious esoteric number games.
>endlessly growing population
Most of population growth happens during the transition from agrarian to fully industrialized nations. People get more and more children because only few of them survive; then all of a sudden they do survive because healthcare and lots of food are available; then they stop getting so many children and population growth stagnates or starts even going backwards. This trend can be observed in many developing countries at the moment.

Someone is communist if they advocate or try to attain a state of communism. Most Leninist countries were communist at least on paper.
I'm sorry comrade, but the general understanding of the term communism refers to Leninist authoritarian left movements, and, by extension, to authoritarian or non-free market systems and ideas in general. There is no use in arguing semantics. We have to explain each other what we specifically want and how to attain it.

Okay artists are a borderline case, but social workers, nurses, kindergarten teachers etc. contribute directly to basic needs of people who can't fulfill them on their own. Society would immediately collapse if we didn't have those people. Yet under capitalism, most of them work under dysmal conditions for extremely low wages.
>>53888195
>Hows that working for them in Venezuela?
Venezuela is currently a failing state not because of the left-populist/socialist policies of the government, but because they relied on one single resource for their economic growth for the last 30 years and that resource is running out now.

>Rely on a single resource to prop up your government's huge deficits
>Unable to adapt to loss of this income because your economic system is rigidly wired to depend exclusively on the government
>Not the result of left-populist policies
I'm not even an ancap or lolbertarian or even particularly right wing economically, but you can not say that Venezuela's failure is unrelated to its socialist policies.

No. I am arguing for regulation, not socialism. There's a big difference between placing limitations on what essentially results in extortion, and having the entire process be government controlled and provided.

Enforced by who, and what? What happens when it caps? Lacking detail.

>>53887860
>How is the idea of socialism related to scarcity?
Because socialism, just like communism, believes in the government spreading around the resources so everyone survives. Though it has a softer approach, and moves slower, the end result will be the same.

>They still breed under capitalism.
This is true, however, they would also die in a real capitalistic society without using more resources then they could acquire through the state.

>Socialism assesses people's needs and abilities first and foremost, which means that more inequalities and calamities will be taken care of, so that more people have a chance to educate themselves and solve their own problems.

Inequalities? Will you make all the short men taller? The dumb women smarter? Can you give everyone the lifestyle of Bill Gates?
I wouldn't allow my current lifestyle, much better then the majority of the planet, be taken from me by force (and it would take force). You underestimate not only the greed of the rich, but also the ambition of the poor. People WANT a ruthless, dog-eat-dog society. It is hard work, practicality, and will that feeds people, not kindness. If you favor kindness over those traits, you will starve.

>It also creates the artificial value that is money, which often has nothing to do with what people actually need, and more to do with devious esoteric number games.
Money has been a valuable tool for centuries, and a very useful one. The barter system is inefficient and limiting in reality. Though some have admittedly exploited the system, it still is the best option currently.

>Most of population growth happens during the transition from agrarian to fully industrialized nations.

True, but there still are many non-industrialized nations that need support, and to have true equality worldwide would break the abilities of civilization. Are you for national socialism?

What do you think of this motivation (warning, long post)?
Vilain is born with a unusual physical characteristic, and his/her mother dieswhile giving birth to him/her, amking most of the village he/she lives in think he/she is cursed. When she/he is 8 years old, the same disease that had weakened the vilain's mother strucks the village again. The furious villagers blame the child, and try to kill him/her, but he/she unvoluntarly kills them with his/her power he/she discovers Under stress (plague manipulation), including the few people that supported him/her. This is the first step to the villain's fall: he/she sees himself/herself as a monster, and wonders if the rumors of him/her being cursed and being responsible for her/his mother death are true. The child wanders for some days, until he/she finds the nearest city, in which she/he makes some friends, until the pain he/she is feeling eases down. However, xhen he/she is 13 years old, an organisation that has been investigating what happened to the village finds him/her and kidnaps her/him to try to understand the source of his/her powers. They force him/her to use his:her power, and the only thing to stop her from being crazy is a doctor that takes the role of a new father figure for him/her. however, one day, she/he is told to kill someone, or the doctor wil be shot with a pistol. He/she thinks that he/she will be able to deal with the conséquences of this choice. He/she unfortunatly can't use her power with efficienty and once again unwinllingly use his/her power and kills the doctor and the person that treathened to kill him. She/he realise that the gun isn't loaded, and hat it was a bluff : the doctor only was nice to her/him so that she/he will make the choice of Killing the test subject. The Young adolescent snaps and goes on a rampage across the city, until he/she calms down. This his the second step on the road to becoming a villain : he/she has realized that the world is cruel.

He/she starts to wander across the world, trying to find a sence to life, and across her.his long life (the setting's powers come with enhanced lifespan) can't come to a conclusion to wether humans and all inteligent life are good or evil, and if the world is Worth to keep existing or not. Eventually, he/she founds a villain group that accepts him/her, but the leader betrays her/fim once again. She/he kills him, fully unleashing his/her power for the first time, but doesn't want to take the lead of the group. Instead, he/she remains travelling, until he/she eventually start a familly. However, a reminder of his/her past makes him/her snap definitively and she kills the ones he/she loves once again. She/he decides hat even if the world has good points, the bad ones are majoritary, and that it should be destroyed to cease its suffering.
I know that this is a pretty weak story, and that they are a lot of redundancies, but they could be used to give the villain an impression of an ednless cicle of happiness and sadness.

Villains who are out to kill God.

Best done when after the MCs kill them, they realize that (the) God(s) are actually as bad as the villain was saying all along.

Can be really trite if not done correctly. It just comes off as really cliched diabolus ex nihilo shite.

I had a BBEG in one of my games, that was a hunter, but after being almost mortally wounded, joined a cult worshiping the universe's equivalent of a death God, (who is actually LN, the idea being he doesn't actually kill people, just sort of decides when someone should die. I never actually cleared it up, but he's not evil) in order to avoid dying, but after realizing that most of the gods are basically puppeteering people, he quit, and decided to go on a crusade against the Gods.

The whole campaign's premise was that they got caught up in the Death God Cult's attempts to assassinate the BBEG in an attempt to keep the peace, while the BBEG attempted to find local maguffin #1342 to attain omnipotence, kill the Gods, then kill himself, because he couldn't live with what he'd done.

I've gotten really tired of the whole "celestial realm is actual teh evahl!" trope.
You can practically call the entire plot of a game or show from the first episode because of it.
I'd like to see a few settings where the protags are convinced this trope is the case, and then get a whole bucketfull of "oh, I guess we were wrong and now all the Outer Things are clawing their way through reality. Oops."

Unfortunately, often times they completely lack tact with it.

That is true, but the standards of living required for that level of education arn't possible for the majority of the population of the world... however travel is. We are already seeing the consequences of that imbalance with Europe and the Middle East.
As things stand, globalization is the largest obstacle to any lasting socialist society.
until the rest of the world (India, Africa, South and Central America) get to higher level, socialism will always be doomed by migration and population replacement, because those lower civilization will continue to pop out more people, who will then move to acquire a better life.
Hell, even if you got the number under control, you are still just developing a government dependent underclass for the rich to exploit. Even if you spread money, food and care around, there will always be those who consolidate power, favors, connections and wealth.
I just don't see socialism as a possibility anytime within this century. Technology and industrialization needs to spread across the world before it even has a hope of happening.

When their motivations are unknowable.

>>53897533
Think about it. Every single human stays alive, forever. No one can die. At the same time, increasingly less people are born. The ghost stories in the towers are just icing.

The conclusion one of the characters (a supervisor of a tower of the dead) comes to is that everyone's souls are trapped inside their forever undying bodies, unable to reincarnate as new life. He believes mankind's attempts to stave off death are about to bring about it's extinction, causing him go a bit of the deep end and successfully disable the entire tower he his responsible for, becoming presumably the greatest mass murderer ever known to mankind. His theory is never proven, either.

It's one of several stories the main character, a young boy, lives through, witnessing the actions of his past and future lives. The antagonist is a girl in the present who wants him to witness the sins he committed in his other lives (in which she is often also antagonistic) if I remember correctly. The manga is called Spirit Circle and it's neato, but all the different lives have very different tones so that one is unique.

She would be an unironically great villain if she wasn't acting purely out of weakness, racial guilt, and a misplaced mother complex because she's a childless and profoundly unhappy woman whose entire life is small, drab, and lonely.

George Soros, now, is a fascinating villain from a standpoint of "real people who should be fictional characters", but I've grown disenchanted with him as a villain over time. He somehow manages to both be too ideological and too profit-focused to be a really great villain.
