If memory serves, it was also a decent amount of time since RTR standard as well (obviously actually, he has a Khans fetch). What's really strange is that you can see a conscious effort to upgrade, using staples such as leak, remand and fetches, so he obviously had some understanding of the format yet still wanted to run 3 mana counters, banned cards and though sphinx's rev was a win con (for x=15 no less)

I still like it tho. Its a solid art direction if you are to abandon the traditional art. Any other kind of human representation would have been overshadowed by the original so iconic it is.

Also am I the only one or is that a very Megaten look?
>>
>>53860554
>That's why I play Esper spirits
So I'm not the only one.

Do you play Phantasmal Image? I assure you, it's possibly the best card in the deck, considering it can be a Queller, Captain or Selffless Spirit on demand.

Also, Metallic Mimic or Anafenza the Spirit-Tree?, I like Anafenza better because she lets you distribute the counters to a degree. Still, legendary type is quite the drawback on a 3-of.
>>
>>53861916
Why wouldn't you just jam Pili-Pala in there instead of Master of Etherium?
>>
>>53862038
not him, but
>cast Ballista for zero
>get damage in with Signal Pest, or 2 w/ Architect paying U

It does feel like a weak link, so I must be missing something.
>>
>>53862084
Even two of them though. Pili-Pala on turn 2, Architect on turn 3, turn 4 win the game with Balista. And that's not even "christmasland" combo because Trinket Mage could come out of the sideboard to help you tutor.
>>
>>53861916
am I retarded? What does this deck do?
I see the Judge's Familiar/Mausoleum Wanderer and Lodestone Golem to force the opponent off curve/behind on mana.
I see ways to make artifacts cheaper by tapping things, and I see a way to cause life loss by having things tapped.
I also see Walking Ballista

This looks like some pauper deck where all the pieces fit, but seems so slow and indirect that it shouldn't work, but does.

>>53862430
storm

>>
>>53862430
Bogles 0/10. Used to win if interaction didn't happen, and lose otherwise. Now it's slow and just loses.
B/W Tokens 2/10. Knowing how and when to spend mana is literally it. When to flashback, when to Zealous Persecution, when to remove (as usual)

Blue Steel is pretty cheap. I might give it a shot.

>>
>>53862011
Zealous Persecution is quite handy in this deck.
Blessed Alliance I mainboard because of its versatility. It was originally Azorius Herald, but it was too slow and lacked the defensive capabilities of Blessed Alliance.
Phantasmal Image and Metallic Mimic don't have flash, even with Rattlechains, and I want to play most of my cards on my opponent's turn after Turn 1. Lingering Souls is an exception because it's too good not to have. I would consider experimenting with Midnight Haunting, but I like flashback and using my Black splash more than a lower opportunity cost.
I haven't tried Anafenza because it seems too mana stringent. Zealous Persecution is my only other mana stringent card, but I usually play it after turn 3, which by then I've already got the manabase covered..

Ad Nauseam. 7/10 for spoils version, 5/10 no spoils. While most people could win single games with this deck with a good draw, the deck requires a lot of subtle skills in order to perform consistently well. Knowing when to use spoils of the vault to name things other than ad nauseam will win you a lot of games you'd otherwise lose. Knowing when to pact of negation outside of combo turns or even what the optimal ordering of your cantrips are both important as well. It is also very easy to fall into the "results oriented thinking" trap with this deck, so knowing how to evaluate plays correctly is important.
>>
>>53861932
>Also am I the only one or is that a very Megaten look?
it is somewhat but Megaten is far from the first thing that comes to mind
>>
>>53862430
Burn: 3/10. Easy to pick up and play, but moderately difficult to master. A novice Burn player can easily lose games they should have won because of misplayed spell sequencing or overextending themselves when they should have held back a bit. A fair and simple deck at its core, too.

>>53862554
Well memed friend. "Almost Kill Yourself: the Deck" is SUPER skill intensive.
>>
>>53862430
I cannot give a pseudo-objective number, but UW Spirits can be quite tricky. Some plays are obvious: get down Rattlechains ASAP, and use Selfless or Spell Queller to stop wraths if counterspells aren't handy. Others are a bit more risky, such as whether or not to Vapor Snag (especially if it's your creature), which Spirit to sac, and should I rush to get down Drogskol or should I wait for protection.
I would give the skill level of my deck a 2/5, assuming 3 means average skill, 5 is Lantern Control, 1 is Bogles, and 2 is Burn (I'm not using X/10 because that's too precise).

Grixis Delver: 6/10, has lots of options and you have to know when to go all out. Very fun deck to play.
Eldrazi Tron: 4/10, easy wins with good draws, but you still have to know how to use Chalice, your Thought-Knot Seer, and that's pretty much it. My version doesn't have the Ballistas yet because I'm fucking cheap, but they're a great addition to the deck and add a small layer of complexity to it.

Then buy some fucking glasses, and take a goddamn second to read the card. The fucking name text is even bolded a little to help it stand out a bit. And the rules text is clearly visible so you don't even need to read the name
>>
>>53863944
against ad nauseam, yes. against the rest of the field thalia might as well read 'the first fatal push your opponent casts costs two mana'.
no other creatures list in the format makes you work as hard to find viable lines of play.
>>
>>53863944
different dntfag, you need a lot of knowledge to play dnt correctly. You also just guess wrong sometimes, which isn't true for lots of decks. Lots of decks don't have wrong decisions buuilt into their game plan. Which land to hit, which land to flickerwisp, do I need to flickerwisp on his upkeep or my end step, etc. You need to know the other decks really well, their curve, what to fear from them, etc.

It's easily one of the "harder" decks to play in modern, and its why I chose it. Everything you do is in response to what is in your opponents hand and what his likely draws are and what he's holding, unlike decks that have a proactive gameplan and unlike decks that have a reactive gameplan.

Herp derp arbiter that miraculously doesn't die and 2 ghost quarters is like 1/20 games against good opponents. Every other game is a estimation game and always close. Dnt wins by margins, not blowing someone up like an aggro deck does and not just killing them outright like a combo deck.

grishoalbrand. 2/3. mulligans are pretty tricky. the tension between vengeance and breach can make looting difficult. sequencing cantrips optimally makes you evaluate how much time you have to assemble a kill. the combo itself is non-deterministic and you make several decisions even while going off.

skred. 1/3. not that many decisions to make. sequencing/utilizing koth and rationing the removal-light hands strike me as the hardest things.

rug delver. 2/3. so many things to keep track of: manage manabase, goyf types, delve fuel, life total, balancing pressure with disruption, how to use limited bolts, etc.

1. Get rid of their pathetic Avengers clone
2. Stop printing broken cards and pushed mythic rares
3. Get rid of mythic rarity
4. Make commons and uncommons more complex (see: more powerful)
5. Go back to 3 set blocks
6. Start building worlds rather than telling a story through the contrived and agenda based actions of poorly fleshed out characters

Sorry should I be happy that Wizards are printing a 1 card infinite combo in Ixilan, which will inevitably break either Standard or Modern? Modern is already a done deal considering human tribal is a thing. Champion of the Parish and Thalia's Lieutenant become infinitely sized as soon as Hostage Taker hits the board if there's no responses, and it clears away a blocker. There's likely a thousand more enter/leave related cards it works with that a solid deck can be built around. It's going to be Twin/Copycat all over again.
>>
>>53866794
Right and you've judged them on all those points after seeing some rares only.

Just do everyone a favour and quit.
>>
>>53862430

bogles - 1/10 - pretty much a braindead deck, yet it sometimes tilts opponents so it's worth to play for the salt factor

b/w tokens - 4/10 - there's some lines of play, you must decide when you want to expend your board or when you want to/have to mess opponent's plans

soul sisters - 2/10 - it's a fun deck, but it suffers from the severe case of linear aggro

elves - 11/10 the most complex deck in modern, it expands my consciousness, and it allows me to reach nirvana.
>>
>>53866868
Some rares? All it takes is one card to break a format.
>>
>>53862430
bw titan - 5/10 - protect yourself with discards, smash face with tokens and use lifelink to not fucking die.
uw titan - 6/10 - have to be smart with counters, watch the plains count and smash face with titans
trading post tron - 6/10 - shit deck, but its fun
duskmantle mindcrank - 6/10 - same as above
>>
>>53862430
Budget mono-blue faeries: 5/10
It's mostly aggro with a bunch of counter spells, but it can get tricky when flashing in Spellstutters, Cliques, Scions, Quicklings, and activating manlands. I've only played Modern a few times but I've already had a couple judge calls to see if my plays were legal, so that's cool

I usually play legacy, and have only picked up modern within the last few years, but death's shadow is by far the deck with the most punishing/rewarding lines you can take that I have played. I didn't play enough twin to really feel the deck, and pod may also have been more skill intensive, but right now I can't think of another deck in modern that rewards tight play as much as shadow. It's the deck that feels most like a legacy deck due to the low land count and cheap spells/interaction, and I feel as though legacy as a format rewards skillful play and experience more than modern. I know it's popular to hate the best deck, but saying that shadow is easier to play than shit like tron, burn, dredge, elves, etc. is just wrong.

Question for the DnT fags,
I'm running mono white, my 3 drops are currently 4xFlickerwisp 2xBrimaz 2xbigThalia 2xAMC.
Should I drop 2xAMC and go to 1x of bThalia and Brimaz and run 4x displacer?
>>
>>53869170
chalice is a part of the game and I think legacy would be worse off without it. At least legacy has cards like force of will instead of modern where some decks can't do anything about a turn 1/2 chalice/blood moon and just lose on the spot without ever having a chance. Chalice decks aren't even that well positioned right now because everyone is trying to go slightly bigger than the popular delver variants and so are playing more impactful 2/3 mana spells. Plus the decks that play chalice in legacy are generally more interactive than the prison decks in modern (except eldrazi maybe)
>>
>>53857372
So /tg/, I've been wondering lately... what's the oldest World Championships list that's totally Modern legal, and how would it fare in the current metagame?
>>
>>53869264
displacer isn't super good without reliable colorless mana. how much of your colorless mana isn't stapled to a gq or tec edge in mono-white?

ALSO your 3 drops should include minimum two mirran crusaders.
4 wisp
2 crusader
2 3lia
1 brimaz
1 displacer

plan A: draw some cards, draw a LOT of cards, throw lands at face
plan B: slam a hasty 15/15
plan C: chalice and moon your opponent out of the game and go in with spirit apes
Proxy it if those plans appeal to you
You will probably find out quickly that the deck is polar in that it is either making huge plays or doing nothing.
if you find that the bomb plays outweigh the occasional brick on draws or being fairly solitaire combo, build it imo.

it doesn't suck when grixis has no way to deal with your mirran crusader
>>
>>53877498
everything about mtg streams is worse then scg, you might have missed the old female commentator on mtg streams, she was completely mute the whole time unless asked soemthign directly and she was uglyier then the new one too. It is actually getting better.

Yeah I love that Crusader is amazing against Death's Shadow
>>
>>53878526
Except when it has a good matchup against the tier 0.5 deck.

I normally hate Affinity, but even I can appreciate an Affinity deck grinding out with Ghirapur Aether Grid
>>
Man that affinity mirror was a real nailbiter

Dnt is not good against shadow. It's like 60/40 in shadow's favor.

>not dropping a single match over the course of an entire gp
>variance

the word you're looking for is consistency

I took classic jund with 70% proxies to GP Vegas and didn't get caught in the main event or any of the side events.

Why didn't you win?
>>
>>53878989
Because I'm bad at magic. Went 5-0 then lost 4 in a row
>>
>>53878609
Not really true, scg most of the times only has one match per round and then plays some old replays while wotc always has a timeshifted backup match. That alone makes it better imo and then there is also some content in between the rounds not just ads like with scg.

>consistency
>can't beat affinity when they mull to 4 post board

>>53879082
mmm, you are actually right, i was only thinking of commentators and scg's are far better imo

What a fucking shitshow
>>
>>53879082
MTG has better streams, but it can't hold a candle to SCG's youtube uploads of the event.
I really wish mtg would play some audio during that keep or mull game.
>>
Why the fuck did this guy keep aether vial and stony silence in his hand, with only 1 land? AGAINST AFFINITY.

A one land hand against Affinity...
>>
>>53879169
to be fair his deck is shit vs affinity, might as well go for it and hope you draw the second land and the stony silence wins you the game, taking the mull didn't really have much better chances(though mulling probably would have won in this case, he didn't know opponent was mulling to 4).

ALso what shitty finals, at least bump it to best of five.
