Finally getting around to painting the last of my Dark Vengeance set. I had no clue what I was doing when I first bought the set over a year ago and I used a fuckton of primer and melted a lot of details. You can see Librarian Turmiel's fingers are basically fused from too much primer.

Anyways, too lazy to strip them and prime again, so I'm attempting to salvage them with some very thin coats of paint.

I can't fucking think of a good pose or ways to do the conversions I want. They're nothing extreme, I just want to do a custom housing on his left hand for the fusion blasters (like a gauntlet) and i want to make the main gun attached to his elbow, not underslung. HALP

If you have some plastic card you should be able to build something that picks up on the angular parts of the Tau design. If you got a spare stealth suit you could maybe whip something up using the helmet if you want to use the fluid shapes.
Not too familiar with the Ghostkeel desu. Never seen one in person.
>and i want to make the main gun attached to his elbow, not underslung. HALP
I can't really imagine how that is supposed to work. How else would you attach something to the forearm if not underslung or over your wrist?

I don't have a spare stealthsuit but I can use the spare ghostkeel helmet, the box gives you two. By the main gun I mean the gun IS the forearm, kinda like Megaman or Heavyarms from Gundam Wing.

But I can't even start until I figure out the pose cause I can't glue shit willy-nilly, only to find out I need to break something apart. It's happened a LOT of times before when I was younger and didn't pre-plan how I'll build my models.

>>
>>53856733
I dunno man.
The painting looks ok from a technical pov, but the paintscheme is terrible imo.
Sorry to be so blunt, but it's all over the place.

If you want to do a quartered or halfed scheme or something like that, that's cool. But those things work because they have big color blocks that read from some distance as well as close up.
If you just paint every part on the miniature a different color in alternating patterns it's just gonna look grey and washed out from a distance.

I'm also not a fan of the blue/green combo.
At least not those two shades together.
>>
>>53856729
I'm really trying. been googling to see how other people pose theirs and man, it's kind difficult to pose. I thought of making a wild west "rapid fire with left hand on the hammer" pose but the arms don't reach that far.

I kinda want to do a Metal Gear or Zone of the Enders reference in the pose but can't be too flamboyant cause my army's all jungle/stealth themed.

usually what I do before packing it away is to gently squeeze the bottle (with the applicator pointing up) to "blow" out all drops of glue that remain in the applicator, it's not fool proof, but you'll have far fewer clogs.

/wip/ ive been working on the painting the part im adding to convert my primars to iron hands and im wondering what can be done to improve them, i wanted the marines to have equipment that aged a ton because of warpfuckery(thats why there is verdigris) i didnt think highlihgting would look good with this style so i just did some drybrushing with leadbelcher to make the corners look a bit more defined, the part i find to look the most dissapointing is the gun attached to the arm on the right(supposed to replace the bolt storm gauntlet on the captain), the gun just looks so messy.

Yes, the paint is thick. This is especially apparent on flat surfaces where you can see visible texture. Did you use craft paint or something?

Color scheme aside this would be OK as a basecoat if it wasn't put on so damn thick, and honestly for tabletop it will probably look fine if you do some shading and highlights instead of flat color.

>>

I suck at painting, but those strokes look a little.. Scratchy. Maybe filling up the whole part that the highlighting is supposed to be on?
>>

Well, do you want to edge highlight or drybrush? Both would work on nids.
>>
>>53860326
Thin your paints more and blend them up in gradual layers, Mr. Kopynator
>>
>>53860393

I'd like to learn proper edge highlighting to give the models a sharper look. I like drybrushing more on vehicles
>>
>>53860422

First off: ಠ_ಠ

Also, i can't find the sweetspot for edge highlights. Either they're not thin enough and stand out or I thinned them too much and the paint flows too much for highlights.

How am I supposed to do it correctly?
>>
Krylon or Rustoleum primer?
>>
>>53860505
>or I thinned them too much and the paint flows too much for highlights
Load your brush up with less paint so it doesn't flow everywhere. I assume you know about using the side of your brush for the sharper angles?
>>
>>53860452
Well you've got too much paint on your brush, and your angle of contact is too low.

Try working most of the paint out on your pallete until it starts to streak a bit, then run the EDGE of the brush (not it's point) along the corners of the model you want highlighted.
>>
>>53860568

Yeah, I try that while highlighting but it's sometimes rather hard on areas where you don't have much space.
>>
>>53860588

Goddamn. I guess I have to cover up my current highlights with the base color again.

I'm not lying, this is the 4th time I try highlighting on those models but I fuck it up every single time.

Yes, I watched Duncan and other painters but I STILL can't get it properly done.

I'm content with most other stuff I paint but I seriously consider just skipping highlights.

Duncan does it the hard way, which is called Freehand highlighting. It's probably the most advanced technique, and I don't even use it because I consider it too 'brushy'.

I post pic related as an example of good highlighting. The armor is drybrushed, while the clothes are edge-highlighted.
>>
>>53860690
Definitely don't skip highlights. Base coat -> wash -> highlight is key to getting a good basic paint job.
>>
>>53860758
>"freehand" edge highlighting

You've been memed hard.
>>
>>53860763

Yeah, but what should I do when I fuck up my edge highlights every single time?

Everything is really fun for me when it comes to assembling, magnetizing and painting.

But when I try to do highlights I get fucking mad, I'm serious. It always looks like shit. See pic above
>>
>>53860787
Memed nothing, I've tried them all and freehand always turns out the worst for me. I drybrush and edge highlight.

>>
>>53860815
Try just rolling your brush along the edge instead of trying to do a brush stroke.
>>
>>53860829

>So, are my strokes too thick or what is the actual problem if I may ask?
Yes, the strokes are too thick, you need to back off of the edge of the model. But if you just roll a bit of paint along the edge you'll probably be less frustrated.

>Also, can't I just drybrush the entire fucking thing..?
You totally can but you'll quickly reach a ceiling in quality if all you do is drybrush everything. Honestly though, if you're just hating this part then yeah just drybrush the edges. It'd probably be the fastest way to do them.

Blood Ravens are pretty cool. I play Blood Angels though :P

Trick to modeling Blood Ravens however is to go to your lfgs and while the other space marine players are not looking, quickly break off the special weapons off from their minis to add to your own as "gifts."

>Am I a retard for wanting to paint up Bluhd Rehvens? the most I know about 40k is whatever /tg/ talks about, plus the 40k video games.
I implore you to reconsider. If it's all you know, go lurk around on the Lexicanum looking at chapters. Download the PDFs or EPUBs of past Space Marine codexes.

If you -really- want to make Ravens, go ahead, but I would recommend actually investigating Marines more so you might find a chapter you dig way, way more than Ravens.

>>
>>53865043
To be clear, I don't want to dissuade him if it's really what he wants. I wouldn't want him to go through all the effort then one day read about Minotaurs or Red Scorpions or some chapter that he decides he digs way more, then have to strip everything, possibly removing conversion work, and have to do everything over.

Krylon for me tends to be ultra-thin, which would be nice. But At some point I had a strange problem where I sprayed at an odd angle, and the can of Krylon gave my model a full blast of PURE ACETONE, which instantly destroyed it. I have never even touched the krylon ever since.

I myself swear by certain cans of Rustoleum, anything that is just straight primer works perfectly fine for me. Just don't use any "Paint + Primer" cans, as they are wholly unsuitable for modeling purposes. The texture those produce isn't conducive to paint sticking, and can sometimes even become hydrophobic.

Does anyone have experience with using enamel washes for weathering vehicles? Advice online is patchy at best but I'd like to try them because the results are excellent.

What are their full drying times like? Do they need to be sealed afterwards for tabletop use and is an acrylic varnish okay over enamels? Otherwise what varnish is suitable?

>>
>>53866316
Had this happen to my Land Raider and Hammernators. As far as I know, it is either impossible to fix, or just extremely difficult. Simple Green did not do shit, so I tried stripping them with alcohol, when that did not work I left them in container with brake fluid for about a month. That did not work either. However, I am not sure that this was the normal behaviour of the paint, and not my can being faulty. So, you can try stripping them, I guess.

Well, keep in mind that much of the stuff I put in there is from ten years back, and more. I'm pretty sure those are from the time when Diaz's weren't OOP.

Notice as well the liberal use of a metal Balrog, Mukaali Rough Riders, the commonplace cutting of Great Knarlocs and Knarloc Riders...

A better time.
>>
>>53866929
You just need to practice and eventually you will feel it when it's perfectly thin but not too watery.
In case of that pic, thicker paint for highlights is fine. Just don't get too much paint on your brush.
>>
>>53866929
For the edge highlights feel free to wipe off alot of the excess paint on your brush on your napkin/palette or whatever you use. Also if you angle your brush and highlight with the side of it you can get very smooth thin consistent lines. Just playbaround and and give it a go, practice makes perfect anon

Step 3: Only get a little bit on your brush. If you get too much, gently dab or press the bristles against your palette and it should leave a splotch of paint, which was the excess. Do that until it doesn't ooze paint everywhere and just deposits a bit where you touch.
Step 3: If you can't use the side of your brush, unfortunately yes, you must use your brush tip. It is going to wear on the bristles, but it's really the only way you're going to get it. Remember, don't be afraid to move your model in any and every direction to get the right angle.
Step 5: If the layer of paint is transparent, or otherwise doesn't seem solid enough, DON'T WORRY. That is normal. Just wait for it to dry and apply another thin coat like that one. You might need to add several, but it will start looking much better and fuller.
>>
>>53867282
It's looking better each time you post. Getting better at miniature painting is just practice and pushing yourself to try new techniques. Proper paint consistency is something you'll learn in time.

Hi tg, today I bought some paints and painted my first mini. Never done any of this before but I bought a lot of stuff on the kigdom death kickstarter and I'm wanting to learn a bit about painting/assembling minis before it arrives in a few months because I don't want to start learning on the kdm minis and have them look heaps shit. Anyway i used the citadel essientials beginner kit to work on a zombicide dude for practice.

Thank you very much.

I know I'm overreacting, but it really bums me out that I spent so much time on my own scheme, carefully selected each color and even the usual painting is okaxish, butvthen you fuck up your highlights.

Your post made it much clearer to me, thank you again

>>53869488
The bone colour isn't anywhere near covering properly. Give it another 2-3 coats and see if that does the trick. You probably slapped on the paint a bit liberally as well, as it has managed to flow around a lot on its own accord. Note for example how the spaces between the ribs are lighter in colour than the ribs themselves, as the bone paint has pooled there.

A different brown for the wood probably wouldn't hurt, to differentiate it more form the copper metal.

Is there any way to make this work that isn't "Heur Duer Dick monster"?

I really like old horror films and wanted to include some reference in my spawns. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18cbxxkbUPw from Nightmareon elm street came to mind when I was searching my bits box.

I've got some demonette claws, horror arms of both types to play with. I like the idea of a snake spawn that's dragging it's self along reaching out to eat something but want to avoid dick monster for obvious reasons when playing a Slaanesh army and every other model has it's tits out.

coloured primers are great time-savers, but also can be used for more advanced techniques (like chipping), so why not.

depends on the technique they intend to use, but even at that level a coloured primer may well be a viable option if what they intend to achieve does not explicitely require a black or white base for instance

New to painting and need help deciding a scheme.
I want to make a chaos army consisting of mostly nurgle with a dash of khorne and centered on the Dark Mechanicus, I've got decent fluff and all that, but can't seem to nail down a scheme.

I figured the Dusk Raiders would be a good place to start, and I especially love the one maroon arm.

I definitely however want to avoid the basic nurgle greens but still give off a sickly vibe, two ideas I have for their flesh would be either waterlogged (bruised flesh and light purple innards with a sheen of blood) or the Bubonic plague (a sickly orange with black mortified flesh running up their limbs)
>>
>>53872019

Perfectly mown battlefields are too grimdark for my tastes. Besides, I ran out of Goblin Green about 15 years ago.
>>
Skellynoob here, how well does just drybrushing verdigris/rust paint on bronze/iron work?
>>
>>53868971

You can drill it by starting with a small drill in centre and enlarging the whole with larger ones .
The most important thing to do is always check and make corrections if necessary when drilling. Dont rush it.

Aside from that not much more can be said about the stug, it is very well done.
>>
>>53872168
Generally you'll be more successful painting it rust/verdigris coloured then dry brushing the metal on. It tends to build up more in the recesses where it doesn't get rubbed off.
>>
>>53872168
It works anon
>>
>>53872052
Not a lot of marines have flesh showing. I can't visualise your idea anon
>>
>>53871055
what about the lil wings from the chaos spawn set?
>>
>>53871464
Because I don't want a dick monster. I want it to be like a snake or a centipede where it's back legs are now useless and it's dragging it's self forward.
>>
>>53872669
CSM boxes could with lots of chaos marine heads. Not sure of the numbers but could easily do headless marines.

>>53872768
Can spawns have wings? I was making it as a points filler mostly. There's just not much to spend 30 points on some times and it would fill that gap.
>>
>>53872669
The flesh is for the nurgle stuff and any greenstuff work I want to do.

For reference, I have three sets of Dark Vengeance and one Dark Imperium, so I have a lot of cultists and zombies that I want to sort of blend with the chapter, who in turn are ran by the Darkmech.

Think of it as a Chaos War Convocation.
>>
>>53872839
Pick a single colour and use it on every model and they will look uniform. Nightlord cultists with deep blue robes will look like they belong together. It doesn't have to be a lot of your army colour but it needs to be on every model.
