>Since [that race] is very rare in [your setting], I decided that I'd like to try [this race] instead. I made [this character] with [this backstory] that [ties well into the setting]. Could you give it a look and see if we have to change something?

>Do you think we could tie [this character]'s backstory in with the current BBEG's? That way he would have a solid reason to adventure with the group.

>The DM has a "premise" for the game that isn't just "you all meet in a bar" or "IT'S A SANDBOX/WEST MARCHES TYPE OF GAME!"

Yeah, alot of people bitch that it's railroading, but I'd rather have a clear goal to work towards and the DM have an entertaining story prepared than just wander around in a sandbox while the DM pulls random-table-generated content out of his ass with no real story context because he didn't actually plan anything.
>>
>Players actually finish the puzzle with their own efforts

>>53830911
My favorite type of game (to play and to run) is one where the party starts with a common objective but the game itself runs like an automatic sandbox, where stuff happens in the world even if the players don't choose to get involved in that particular event.

Needs a group of self-motivating and creative players, though. Also these kinds of games are a bitch to run, so I get them very rarely.

I did that last one... for my Cohort that I'm getting with the Leadership feat. Pathfinder, rise of the runelords. She's a former minion of the runelords, and got hurled through time or something to join our party. Figured if I'm going with something that broken, I'll at least flavor it nicely so the GM won't just kill her off.
>>

You are my fave kind of DM

I have bulk tiny adventures like side quests like a Bethesda RPGs like little things like go here and kill a rival/explore/steal some shit/spy on someone/kill a monster pretty much single session worth of gameplay. Then I have bigger side quests that lead on and touch into the main story at times. The players are free to roam and explore the towns the wastelands and everywhere else in between.

Because they're actually good, mature people and both longtime fans of D&D, even before they met. The closest thing to 'favoritism' was her joining the campaign a little later because she'd been working (which the rest of the group was really happy about) and her character's backstory being tied to one of the quests, because it was easier for the GM to plan.

That being said, my own personal experiences with women and DnD have been enough to make me wary, but for different reasons. Had a few that showed up just because their partners were in my group, with no interest in actually playing the game and just making themselves distractions with their bored/disinterested "commentary".
>>
>>53832885
That's fine, because everyone has had different experiences dealing with the same thing. I'm not wary about females the ones I play with are nice and don't break rules but I'm more weary about the boy friendswho try to favoritism one way or another, which pisses them and myself off. I hate men who allow their dick to sway their opinions and ideals. It's disgusting in the same pathetic way a murderer pleads for mercy from a lynch mob when he raped and murder a child.
>>
>>53832885
Seen this happen as well, it usually goes something like:

>I want to spend more time with my partner
>Showing an interest in hobbies means there's something else we can do to spend time together
>OMG THIS IS SO HARD/BORING
>Instead of finding something else to do or letting him "guy time" with his friends, I'm going to continue to tag along and complain about it and try to make him quit early or lose interest in the hobby.

If a female player actually wants to participate in the game and shows legitimate personal interest, I've got no problems. But always avoid the ones with no experience who just show up just because it's something to do. In fact, apply this to both genders, as I've gotten a fair of male That Guys this way too.
>>
>>53832885
Then you kick them out, and if their partner kicks a fuss, kick them, too.
The only reason you are "wary" is because you were too much a beta bitch to take the situation in hand and resolve it definitively, like most people on this board that complain about a particular group rather than the singular brand they all fall under: Assholes.
You know what an asshole is?
"Anyone who comes to a game group and makes the game less fun for others in the group."
No need to scream about women, or men, or that guy/girl/the fuck ever. All are equally assholes, and are named such.

>>
>>53833068
Sadly, anon, I have the ability to choose who I spend my personal time with.
I had people like that in my group in the past, and I told them they either invested in the game or were shipped out. Some manned up, many didn't, and if the SO had a problem with my approach, I told them they could leave, too.
A game group is pointedly not like regular life, and the idea you must endure bullshit during what is supposed to be pleasant distraction is retarded schlock dipped out by people who think they can't do better and need to make excuses.
>>53833078
>How the problem is handled has absolutely nothing to do with the first part.

>>

>>53834258
That's a mighty entitled way to handle it, for a player.

Keep in mind that the game is as much for the fun of the GM than it is for the fun of the players so if my GM tells me that in the fantasy samurai setting we are going to play westerners are considered to have no souls and can be KOSd by said samurai, as well as telling me that we can only play humans because elves, dwarves and hobbits don't exist and nagas are off-limits, I will either tell him "I'm on board, that sounds awesome!" or "Sorry, that's not for me. Maybe another time"

It all has to be resolved as maturely and responsibly as it can be resolved.

My biggest sin was that I usually take a look at monster stats and mish-mash things that make sense.

The building in Assault on Precinct 13 was larger, and this was supposed to be the police headquarters. Inner city (it is Shadowrun), they'll usually take the bottom few floors of a skyscraper, and more than that if it's headquarters and they have paperpushers to seat.

This is a nice one when jokes or stories from old campaigns and games are brought up in a meaningful way
In my current group which I run, We have an NPC who appears every now and again, He's just an ordinary soldier or guard. Somebody of a military background. His name is Rey Kenfile. He's just the rank 'n' file grunt.
He gained his immortality for soloing a gorgon that took on the guise of a local king the party were parlaying with. He was a 5th level guy fighting a Gorgon on his own and holding his own despite her powers.
In an Only War game, He was an NPC attached to the squad with a Multi-Melta platform, And managed to take out an Ork Trukk on his own.
Just a regular guy... performing epic deeds at epic odds
>>
>>53836984
>>53839015
Eh, we also sometime portray a "that guy" that we all know as a minor NPC, the good part being making it not obvious and as subtle as possible.
>>
>>53834096
I had a game once where the six players were split into 3-4 groups at a time, as the GM wanted.
I just took naps when it wasn't my turn at bat, then chat with the guy who had just come off if there was anything I should know about IC.
It bothered the GM I think, because he started up a money pool to buy coffee with, but by that point my schedule had changed and I wasn't napping.

You're fine. As long as they're aware in case you oversleep and know to start without you.
>>
>>53836684
I included that because of that screencap that goes around, about the guy who kills the rest of the party for being vain and selfish, and had kept a notebook with their names in it specifically for his prepared monologue.

Yep.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1_Police_Plaza
That's pretty big, but abnormally so. You can look at police stations on google earth. The ones in LA and NYC get pretty huge in terms of floor space despite being only 3-4 floors.

I believe that parking garage in pic belongs to them as well, but being headquarters, it's probably mostly personal vehicles since they don't do much real police work there.
A precinct might have 20-30 cars and be in a 2-3 floor building, but those are just squad cars. They've got access to parking garages full of bikes, traffic carts, vans, replacement cars, etc.

Now kick things into cyberpunk and we could probably double those numbers and push vertically, since space is a premium.
>>
>>53840819
Not how it works, buddy. If you provide a claim you back it up. That's the argument, you are strawmanning for man chest, that's fine I will give it to you, as long as you prove your claim, which is the reason why the conversation even started.

>>53840476
Real talk: The Silmarillion was Tolkien's prewriting for LotR, revised and expanded for publication.
Most of it didn't make it into The Hobbit or the trilogy proper.

Having lots of information is great, but there is no requirement to use or explain all of it. Most of it you don't even need to tell a narrative within a setting. It just lets you pull up a character or old legend whenever you need, and have it already worked into the setting.

Of 95 pages you really can get away with five that the players see, less if you keep them informative instead of entertaining, i.e. keep the prose sparse.

>GMs who plan the local crop economics, land boundaries, and duties of landowners

Fun fact: Yams almost exclusively come from Africa and Southeast Asia. The vast majority of "yams" in the Americas are actually sweet potatoes.
To live exclusively on yams, for a 2,000 calorie diet, roughly 70 yams would need to be consumed per day, per person. For a week-long expedition into a jungle with four men, you would need 1,960 yams, weighing about 430 lbs.

>>
>>53830879

My friends and I draw art for our campaign, we made a wiki with hundreds of pages, I redrew the map to include new towns from backstories/etc. We copypasted the entire chat logs into a doc and one player carefully edited it from script-form to novel-form (not heavily, just Bob: I stab the orc to 'Bob stabs the orc' sort of thing.) and then we uploaded all of it onto the wiki and we remember everything that happened and ask questions and try to talk to npcs
but the gm just seems like he's annoyed that we're so 'addicted' to the game, and he doesn't prepare anything anymore or care and he's clearly bored/done and we don't know what to do

what do we do
>>

Maybe someone else could GM.

Thanks, we're sort of nearing the end... I'm not sure, I feel like he's been burning out for a while. We even skipped a few sessions recently (I think 3 non-consecutive weeks were skipped in the past 2 months?) and he still shows up barely prepared and obviously tired/not caring.

It's really frustrating. I feel like it's totally a chore for him at this point and the only times he enjoys the game is when he's running a railroady cutscene.

Was there a time in the past when he was just as involved as you guys are, or was he always railroady and unprepared?

>>
>>53834468
Except that doesn't happen. What you'll get is a generic fantasy setting where the GM will autisticly whine about his pet peeve races but not outright deny them. Then come to /tg/ and make a "that guy" thread if you trigger him. No matter how well thought out or acceptable you are.

You want to ban races.. I don't like that but it's your game, but I'm not going to write a race off just because it's uncommon. That's too close to the GM just assigning players their characters for my liking

There are exceptions to this. There's a girl in my game group who wants (and does) fuck one of the other players, but she's the wife of that player. They are both solid players that compliment each other well. The only small complaint I have is that she has a little trouble trying to get into character for the social aspects, but it's pretty insignificant. Her husband is a wonderful role player and has been slowly rubbing off on her.

I do have to scale up the difficulty though, because both of them are tactically minded and good at getting creative with how to tackle challenges.

Well anon, if you must know, I uploaded it when roll20 still used soundcloud and it's still on there:
https://soundcloud.com/territorial-oak/precious-illusion

Judge for yourself if you like it or not sure, but >>53850383 is correct and I'm at least glad my players found it as fitting as I did to have that kick in in the obviously last phase of the fight against a powerful-yet-reasonable god-like entity attempting to commit genocide, wherein the fight itself was essentially a bet on how capable mortals' forces were and if they could best him he'd spare his targets.
I thought the way this track blends different genres was a cool way to represent that the BBGG was actually a chill dude and only testing them, but was still powerful enough and definitely intending to kill them, so I guess I succeeded as far as that goes

Funnily, it's pretty difficult to find last time I checked and even youtube only had a live concert or something, so I uploaded it myself solely so I could play it during this fight- but since I didn't take it down or anything, I still get frequent emails about someone new on soundcloud liking it, and it makes me smile every time

We were playing a sci-fi horror one-shot in a large space station orbiting Saturn. Some players were investigating a sex-offender/serial killer on the station, had suspects on the right guy and called him out, but had no evidence and were locked in the prisons for assault and diffamation.

Meanwhile, something came from Titan after some people were sent down there and due to some huge fuckup security wasn't able to stop it from entering the station.
For some seconds, the doors from the hangar were open shut with force and any non-sealed area was deprived of oxygen. Some players were asked to hold their breath for as long as they could and write their actions with very little light (energy was failing).

Later, something else happened and the main generators were off for some minutes, meaning gravity, oxygen, light and containment were all off. This time the station was sealed after the first incident, so people weren't in danger of immediate suffocation, air just didn't circulate anymore.
The players in prison, however, were playing highly susceptible guys. PTSD from wars back on Earth, the likes. They were in the middle of an emergency, a killer creep was free, something unspeakable had killed the guards outside, lights were out, and gravity had abandoned them in the dark just as they had gotten out of their cells. I asked them to keep breathing heavily all the time until they got close to hyperventilation, while sitting on swivel chairs, describing everything through rambled war flashbacks and, in one case, high cussing. All was performed in a dimly-lighted living room and as the GM I continuously walked in circle around them, occasionally making alien sound effects (which I'm quite good at) or making them spin. They had to traverse the deactivated prison without a clue, with something in the dark, and when I saw fit to stop that moment of horror, the auxiliary generator kicked in.
There were also other stuff I did with them on that occasion.

Apparently the data show that married people actually have more sex on a regular basis than single people. Even if you're hugely successful at picking girls up on the weekend, you may get laid once or twice a week at most, whereas if a married couple has sex once or twice a week, every week, they're outdoing you.

I think the myth comes from the idea that people in a new relationship may fuck three+ times a week when they first get together, and that tapers off as they stay together longer. But they still get more booty from each other on average than single people do.

I've actually had players do one shot test games, and prebuilt combat tests, with me (both one's I've run and one's they've run) to help get everyone ready for the game.

Two of the 4 players had played the system (mutants and masterminds) before and I had effectively no experience with it GMing or playing. One of them later said that they had misunderstood what I meant when I said he'd fallen into the "everyone has experience with d20" fallacy but stuck with it and made sure I could run it after he found out I wasn't exaggerating.

It was wonderful. The game is still going.
