The word you're looking for is "amnesiac"
>>

We already know thanks to the next block's spoilers.
He's not dead, but castaway in another plane.
>>
>>53826528

I guess he's the other planeswalker deck.

Also, this card sucks. It doesn't replace or compliment Gainsay.

We have a Jace in Ixalan, so he ain't dead.

Also

>>
>>53826581

>it doesn't replace gain say

Why not? Because you don't like Jace? Or do you have a competitive reason I'm not seeing?
>>
>>53826581
It's literally gainsay with potential upside. There are no cases in which that text is harmful, merely irrelevant. I'm pretty sure that is, by definition, strictly better.
>>
>>53826565

Fucking lol
>>
>>53826633
>>53826672

The upside is too narrow. Gainsay is pretty fuckin narrow by itself. Both cards are for fringe play at best.

I think everybody can agree there, the confusion was you saying it doesn't "replace" gainsay, which sounds like you're implying gainsay is superior
>>
>>53826760
It still completely replaces Gainsay in every way. Both being narrow does not negate Jace's Defeat being strictly better than Gainsay.
>>

And then Ajani shows up and we get to see a cat and a snake fight over a confused amnesiac on a boat.

That last bit seems like a joke, but I'd actually love a card of Old Lady Liliana.

Also those vine tentacles. Ooh Mr. Bolas, ooh.

Also somebody shop Bolas and Sarkhan's faces onto this, I won't be able to do it for another few hours.
>>
>>53827126
I'm actually seriously hoping Liliana goes crone after beating her last demon, thereby discovering that killing them all annulled the contract, and forcing her to find a way to restore her youth.

Which, hey, could be a good excuse for a return to Ixalan later down the road! Fountain of youth or something.

they were all warned by Ajani, Jace has been defeated exactly like this once before, Lili knows of Bolas's powers, and they still mushed on to a Plane Bolas set up for himself.
>>
>>53827375

the new one block=one set stuff doesn't start until after the second half of Ixalan
>>
>>53826558
this is HIGHLY Ironic as Jace is already an Amnesiac as he allowed that sphinx to erase his mind so he could defeat him when he was a kid.
>>
>>53827432
Lili is only there for the Demon, I wouldn't be surprised if she fucked right off the moment Bolas showed up
>>

>>53827518
Not him but I'm guessing blue/green to show Jace becoming feral or a survivor.
>>
>>53827518

We know his third ability creates copies of himself that are probably creatures with P/T equal to his loyalty?

It seems like he's out of control of his own powers and they're running rampant.
>>
>>53826789

This is literally the second time Jace got mindfucked by Bolas
>>
>>53827527

MTG is a story about Nicol Bolas, as soon as he's gone/dead I won't have to buy any WOTC products ever again.
>>
>the biggest hitter you bring to kill Bolas is a man who can't be hurt, but has no innate strength

>the other even bigger hitter, but far more narrow is a lady no one trusts who openly admits to having a seperate agenda on the plane, and her powers are such known quantity to Bolas that she's basically useless.

what did they think would happen? Jace can't even defend himself against Bolas's mind shit, Chandra can't burn him, and Nissa is just a god damn elf.
>>
>>53827601
They're probably just high on all the horseshit they've been able to get away with in the 3 blocks leading up to this.
>>
>>53827432
They actually addressed that. They were more or less in a no-win situation. Either they went to confront Bolas right away, or Tezzeret would go tell on them and he'd have time to prepare and scheme against them. Which you know he'd do because he's a petty fuck.

It was a gamble, and it's clearly failed, but there was at least a chance.
>>
>>53827631
Poor Tezzeret has literally never won anything in the history of MTG
>>
>>53827631
the only man alive to "beat" him told them not to, and they did it anyways.
>>53827615

well they did defeat 2 titans and.. watch the other one imprison herself in the moon, and beat Tez again, as if that were a fucking accomplishment.

seirously even his planeswalker card is weak, its even weak in limited, what the fuck was that.
>>
>>53827631
defeat him.. how? exactly?

they KNOW his strengths, the 5 of them wouldn't be enough.

this was the worst idea, and this entire set is going to show us why.
>>
>>53826528
The fact that this is even a thing just shows how fucking stupid WotC has gotten.
>>
Outside of flavor text, how do people learn the stories of these sets?
>>
>>53827453

I'm fairly certain she either does that or just kinda let's him do his thing. If anything, Bolas might even be proud of her for doing what she's doing as long as she doesn't fuck with his plans.
>>
>>53827728
Unless the power of shitty writing saves them again.

> Bolas about to defeant them
> All the rebels cheer them on/gives them sad looks
> Gatewatch uses power of bullshit/friendship to defeat Bolas clone or reveal it's the real Bolas and he retreats but flings Jace somewhere
> Gatewatch must now work together to find Jace who probably went full Tarzan and defends local inhabitants from pirate captain Vraska in the next episode of Jacetice League: Unlimited
>>
>>53827780

Elaborate. I'm glad they're sacrificing the Gatewatch, at least for now.
>>
>>53827657
Ajani only beat him by going super sayin at the death of his brother and making a spirit clone of Bolas
>>
>>53827810
They literally made a card to counter "Jace planeswalker spell". Which means that WotC either thinks there are enough Jace planeswalker cards to make the card relevant or they think Jace planeswalker cards are (will be? I remember why mind sculpter got banned) relevant enough to demand a special counter. Either of those options are very bad things, especially when coupled with where the lore is going.
>>
>>53827891
Or they think adding that bit of text to Gainsay is irrelevant enough that it can be essentially extra flavor text.
>>
>>53827891

It could also mean that there's bolas vs Jace planeswalker decks and they threw in some cheeky hate cards
>>
>>53827930
I disagree. I figure they put the text there to encourage it's use.

>>53827932
Definitely possible. Not completely sold but it's a possibility. I just can't recall if the X vs Y decks dropped before the new sets or after.
>>
>>53827728
To be fair, they didn't have any clue how they were going to deal with the Eldrazi titans, either.
>>
>>53827965

At the same time because Planeswalker duel decks are the new starter decks
>>
>>53826850

>>
>>53827965

>>
>>53827977
Really? I was not aware of that. I don't pay attention to the starter decks honestly.

>>53828020
>Merfolk vs Goblin
Hmm...possibly a Jace vs Bolas but I doubt it.
>>
>>53827965
They put useless but flavorful text on cards all the time. And honestly, Jace's Defeat is probably part of a cycle, each showing one of the Gatewatch getting fucked over and having mostly pointless text if you happen to hit the character in question.
>>53827977
No, the planeswalker decks are the starter decks, the Duel Decks are a different product entirely, and they're not going to make a Jace deck for Hour when he's a walker in Ixalan and not in Hour. The planeswalker decks are just the old precons with a shitty planeswalker slapped on top of it, not something intended to be thrown at each other specifically (any more than the old precons were)
>>
>>53828041

It'll be Merfolk vs Goblins.
>>
>>53826528
>Jace getting fucked up
>Flavor text about a smug blue mage that's not only NOT Jace for once, but is actively being smug against Jace

In that case I guess I'm wrong and it's just a cycle. Here I was worried about another mind sculpter and "Jace's Defeat" was supposed to be the counter.
>>
>>53828106
Neither was I. The Jace planeswalker spell bit is flavorFUL text. Not flavor text. They did not print the card because they think Jaces are going to run rampant. They printed the card because Gainsay is a fair card and giving a minor upside if you somehow hit a Jace is a flavorful way to represent what's going on in the set (i.e. - Jace getting BTFO)

Wanting it to be chandra
Knowing it will be gideon
>>
>>53828299
I mean considering how fucked up Theros' afterlife is, There's a definite chance of her getting her spark back through loopholes. Hell, Angels and Demons can't be walkers either, but we have Ob.
>>
>>53828286
No, she's not. She wouldn't be a damn planeswalker if she were.
Plus it completely negates the entire point of the bullshit of the story they put her through, that they left her at the halfway point of.
She's going to bust out of the Underworld, probably with Dack's assistance.
>>
>>53828299
Maybe not quite undead, but returned. She's not going to stay dead is the point.
>>
>>53828251
Please please please let Chandra and Nissa both die

They are both cancer incarnate as characters
>>
>>53828286
you can't be an undead planeswalker, she'll rise again as an Angelic Walker, because she's in tune with Bant, and that's what happens to hero's on Bant.

the gatewatch/goodguys need a big hitter, to be honest most of them are quite weak on the offense, someone has to at least have a chance of clashing with Bolas and holding their own, not exactly winning but at least fighting.

Angel empowered Elspeth can be that person, she was already a freak of nature (possibly some sort of phyrexian experimentation on children... gone right) capable of fighting things far beyond what humans should be able to, and also being able to channel more White Mana than even Heliod could muster.
>>
>>53828320
Ob is not a demon, not really, he was born a human with a spark, he became demon-like because of the chain veil.

and there is no such loophole, if you become a Returned your super fucked.

she'll simply become an Angelic Walker.
>>
>>53828346
plus her becoming an Angel is a nice continuation/culmination of her entire life's story.

she always felt she wasn't good enough, no matter how crazy her feats were or how much good she did, like she was a failure, well her sparking to a Bant colored Angel-Walker would finally show her and the multiverse she is good enough.
>>
>>53828103
I love this cycle.

I don't know how many of these cards I'm ever gonna play but oh baby.

Chandra's Defeat will probably be standard relevant though
>>
>>53828360
See, I figure the loophole is "she's still a walker as long as she's in the underworld, because she's not a returned." and they'll pull some kind of bullshit. I will say, sparking into an angelwalker would be fucking awesome.
>>
So, there's a cycle here of Bolas destroying the gatewatch. That would include Liliana then, right? I honestly can't see her doing that unless her defeat is getting controlled by the demon
>>
>>53828041
The 'vs Bolas' product is an Archenemy set.
>>
>>53828328
The process of becoming a Returned splits the body and soul. This kills the spark.
>>53828320
There's only one planeswalker that actually involves loopholes, and that's Karn - he should not have a spark, and indeed was not created with one, but both of the ones he's had were given to him.
Any other exceptions aren't actually exceptions, they've been cursed humans in every case.
>>
Gideon's defeat
W
Target White permanent loses all abilities until the end of the turn. If it is a Gideon planeswalker, destroy it.
>>
>>53828428
and despite this, Karn is the person who should least have a spark ever, since with it, he wrecked untold havoc, accidently even, for hundreds of years in many different ways.

never has a being bumbled around so awfuly, at least Dyfed made one, incredibly, amazingly stupid decision.

Karn has made so many poor choices and has down so badly with what he's got its amzing.
>>
>>53828452
Dyfed still wins the Stupidest Planeswalker Ever Award though, simply due to how colossally stupid that decision was.
Karn's trying to win it, but he's still got a lot of catching up to do.
>>
>>53828452
>Lets give the golem who can time travel godlike power and the ability to travel around the multiverse on a whim
>what can go wrong?
>>
>>53828480
Karn's body toll will surpass Dyfed's soon enough.
>>53828484
it was an accident of firing the legacy weapon, the 2nd time he got a spark it was literally because they needed Karn to not become the father of machines.
>>
>>53828547
Considering just how much bullshit Yawgmoth pulled on as many planes as he did, on top of the Invasion itself?
And all of that was directly because Dyfed gave Yawgmoth his own personal party plane AND showed him how to make portals?
Nah, Karn's got a whiles to go.

According to Maro, they won't be jumping planes between sets. There can be multiple continuous sets in the same plane if it's a long/important story.
Also Core set is coming back. One of the 4 large sets per year is a core set.

They can spend as much or as little time on any one plane as they deem necessary.
If they decide that they want to spend two sets on returning to Ravnica, there you go. Three sets for their next actual big worldending plot? They can do that. One set to just check up on how Theros is doing, or for something that they're not sure people are going to like? Also works.
Each set, starting with 'Dominaria' in the spring of next year, will be a large set. Sets taking place in the same plane may have some of the same mechanics, may not. Sets that don't won't.
>>
>>53829856
And, if they decide to stick around on one plane for more than one set, they've said there will be story reasons for differences between sets, probably like how Tarkir or Return to Innistrad were split.

Golems can't get sparks naturally either, and yet Karen walks the planes. Not to mention how very capable the Creative team are when it comes to pulling stuff out of their asses to justify whatever it is they want to do that violates already established lore, even if it's just a retcon which itself is later retconned as not being a retcon because "that is totally how it always was, you just didn't notice."

>>53829558
Mechanically sets set on the same story don't need to be mechanically connected even if they might share mechanics or keywords. For example, if we return to Dominaria for a two-set story the two sets could play completely different from each other and share nothing more than the setting, if we returned to Phyrexia for a long story all the sets would likely revolve around artifacts in some way but would probably care about them in different ways, and so on.

Okay what people need to process is that Nissa is only so ridiculously OP on Zendikar.
Off of Zendikar, Nissa is an animist, a rare breed of green mage who siphons powers from leylines, strong and versatile, but not much more impressive than other mages except in how much power leylines can give. (Good ramp, basically)
On Zendikar, Nissa is the beloved daughter of a living plane who has selected her to be the vessel of its power, and can shape and CREATE leylines in whatever design she pleases, including just spawning a billion of them beneath her feet for unquantifiable levels of mana to work.
This is particularly useful against the Eldrazi, because Ugin knows of a magic glyph that draws in their metaphysical figures from the blind eternities, and Jace taught Nissa this planar binding glyph. And putting the leylines in that shape is a fantastic way to drag them down to realspace and therefore mortality. Whereupon nigh-infinite mana can be turned to destroy them.
She can't do that anywhere else, not simply because she has a finite amount of reachable leylines on other planes (she barely got 3 on Innistrad), but because the other planes are not living creatures she is the walking avatar of, and she cannot demand endless quantities of mana from freely.

Also, every other plane is weaker than Zendikar, mana-wise. The plane's defining trait is outrageously strong mana.

They can strategize, but their strategies and goals are so undefined that they cannot be recognized for what they are. Ugin says outright they have no idea what Ulamog wants and so he could not truly be predicted, but there is still logic to his movements, even though it's unknowable what the logic is based in.

Emrakul strategized quite well how to seal herself away until the stars are right.

Plus, as shown by the OED, the usage has been around for quite a while: http://imgur.com/mpl2suw

So people who claim that it's bad usage of English to say "sould of" clearly haven't paid much attention.

On the other hand, it's still not really accurate.
I know usage eventually trumps accuracy, but "should of" is still a malapropism. It's like arguing that literally no longer literally means "literally" because people use it for hyperbole so often, or that irregardless is the same as "regardless" regardless of the negative prefix. People will understand what you mean, but it's still something that should be avoided.
>>
>>53834413
>It's like arguing that literally no longer literally means "literally"
This is nonsense for several reasons. For one, 'literally', like many others, is a word with several meanings, one of which is as an intensifying modifier. Secondly, the usage of 'literally' as an intensifier has been documented since at least the 17th century.
>>
I never doubted /ourguy/ bolas.
>>
>>53834519
The fact you keep arguing from usage is just going to lead this in circles. I already acknowledged usage will win out, but usage isn't the only metric to judge from.
>>
>>53834413
>it's still not really accurate
The way native speakers use their language is the accurate way to use the language.

>People will understand what you mean
Which is the entire purpose of languages.

>it's still something that should be avoided
No, this is something that teachers who don't understand linguistic advice tell their students because they've read, or heard, somewhere that "a sentence ending with a preposition sounds colloquial" and intreprets it as "sentences should never end with a preposition."

>>53834614
>you keep arguing from usage
Linguistics is the study of usage. There is no council that decides how the English language is used, and even if one with the stated goal existed it wouldn't actually amount to anything.
>>
>>53834684
People can be of the opinion that usage is not the sole deciding factor of linguistic accuracy, because it's a subjective viewpoint. The same way a word can be considered accurate simply because enough people consider it accurate can be used to argue against it, because there are enough people who continue to consider it inaccurate. Basing it solely on usage alone can generate these murky grey areas.
>>
>>53827816
So a man who literally touched Bolas spirit tells you "People you are weak and dumb, he's gonna wreck you like children" and they still have gone and tried to beat Bolas without any aces up their sleeves.
>>
>>53834752
>People can be of the opinion that scentific results is not the sole deciding factor of accuracy in physics
This is what you sound like right now. Just as a physicist wouldn't say "water shouldn't react the way this water reacts, this water is functioning wrong" a linguist doesn't prescribe usage.
>>
>>53833293

Looks like Bolas is sparing Liliana for something, Gideon, Jace and Nissa are getting far more fucked up in their arts.

Also the flavor text seems to imply he's leveraging a threat against her.
If he didn't need her for something he would simply say "I will take it away"
>>
>>53834907
The behavior of water is objective.
The decision on whether or not the people using it or the people deliberately opposing the usage of it are correct is subjective. Even when determining things based on usage, it's still possible to note when usage is defying other precedents also set by usage.

>>
>>53836549
I don't personally have a tremendous problem with the Gatewatch because I recognize that the story has always been shit and card design quality has been going down for a long time, but a lot of people dislike Jacetice League because either
A) They make the writing shit
or
B) Their power fluctuates wildly based on the plot (see the disparity between Oath / Kaladesh) and are therefore basically a squad of Mary Sues
or
C) The cards in these sets seem to focus heavily on their dealings on any one plane. This leaves other denizens of planes in the shade and makes it seem as though there are a large number of concepts or stories or mechanics left by the wayside.

tl;dr: Either they're poorly written or they represent wasted potential.

That's not to say The Gatewatch is without it's problems. It's a hamfisted attempt to form a marketable main character team in the style of the Avengers. That's kind of lame. The characters themselves aren't really strong enough to pull the thing off or spend this much time following. The writing can be pretty cringeworthy.

That said, it's a card game's storyline, and many here take it far more seriously than a card game's storyline can possibly warrant. Hopefully they will at least chill out for a few weeks now the thing is going in a different direction.

Fuck off to the plebbit with your feelings, here nobody cares. There was never any suspense, Magic story is a complete corporate shitshow, there is no way they are killing Jace or the GrrrlWalkers.
Thank god we got Ixalan spoilers, long live the leaker, may he get away with this and do it again.

The story being about them means much less focus on the planes they visit. Worse than that is that it means we get a stupid amount of gatewatch walker cards (2+ of each in standard) that could be used for newer characters and make less space for other returning characters.

Ideally what happens moving forward is that the gatewatch still exists to be the focus, but the story revolves around them doing smaller adventures that might connect to one another. Either sending in the right person for the right job or someone just being in the right place at the right time.

I Never really watched Justice league Unlimited much, But I kinda remember it being a lot like this because they had like a million heros so they always sent a small team in, or a guy would happen to be there somewhere important.

Gatewatch is probably more like Teen Titans or something where its the same 5 characters and sometimes they meet some new friends who show up in later episodes. (except the gatewatch cast in nowhere near as fun.interesting)

>Their power fluctuates wildly based on the plot

As it should. In Kaladesh, they had plenty of help from the locals who happened to have made enemies of their enemy. They just can't Channel Fireball the shit out of Kaladesh to smoke Tezzeret out. On Amonkhet, mana is unyielding, they don't have a lot of help from the natives, and got so sidetracked with the Gods that they couldn't really prepare themselves for putting up a decent fight against Bolas. I don't see what the issue is here.

>The cards in these sets seem to focus heavily on their dealings on any one plane. This leaves other denizens of planes in the shade and makes it seem as though there are a large number of concepts or stories or mechanics left by the wayside.

Again, I don't see the issue here. There has been enough cards to show that the people of Nakhtamun are in love with their Gods and are also preparing for the Trials in anticipation for the coming of the God-Pharaoh. How many variations of the mini-stories in cards like Cruel Reality or Deem Worthy do you need?

>They make the writing shit

Eh, it's tolerable.

The Magic storyline is at it's best with it's worldbuilding.
>Ravnica
>Mirrodin/Phyrexia
>Kamigawa
>Alara
>Zendikar
>Innistrad (no storylines, but great worldbuilding)
>Theros
>Tarkir

Every single world from 8th edition to Tarkir had significant world building to it. But the new story telling focuses on the gatewatch butt buddies

Basically deals 5 damage target creature or red PW. If you kill a Chandra this way, you can discard a card. If you do, draw a card.

The only one with half a personality is Gideon, even a relatively likeable character like Chandra is unsufferable now. They won pretty much everything that was thrown at them no matter the odds (they killed two eldrazis in one go) and will lose this one but with no one dying.
They're bland, dumb characters. Would probably work better if they were alone or by groups of two, but as a full team they're atrocious.
>>
>>53836549
Also befor ethe focus was on new characters from the actual plane visited during the bloc, and no one cared if they died or not. The stories had more stakes. The characters were more interesting (heck, Umezawa was fucking good).

>The behavior of water is objective.
So is the usage of language. You can claim all you want that a particular thing native speakers do is badwrong however much you like, but that doesn't change the objective reality that language isn't used the way that you prescribe and that you're therefore being guilty of being a bad linguist who spreads misconceptions.

I mean it pretty much is. Gideon and Nissa are the only 2 members of the power rangers with any combat training who can at least fight when their mana is drained.

Bolas is a planeswalker who acts like an MTG player. He creates plans, lays down contingencies and so on. It's not surprising that he is much more likable than a group of idiots who try to zerg rush him.
>>
somehow Planeswalkers have made me quit this game.

I don't mean the cards and their strong mechanics, I just mean seeing the same fuckers every set over again. I miss when Magic wasn't about a small group of douches hopping from world to world
>>
I like that the gatewatch is being defeated but wish the eldrazi didn't basically job for Bolas. I dislike the implication that he's stronger than the eldrazi especially when there were strong walkers like Sorin constantly stressing over them. Like why was he or Ugin so worried when 5 random walkers or Bolas can just btfo them?

MaRo has said they'll be doing a lot less Gatewatch focused content in the future
>>
>>53838726
Weatherlight wasn't really good but at least it was all part of the same story. Now we got those unlikable fuckers with their villain of the week every bloc.
>>
>>53838923
He's only saying they will print less planeswalker cards in Standard -- i.e. not make no sure that each of the main five have a Standard legal card at all times -- and won't necessarily involve all of them in all their stories. They will still be main characters and all stories moving forward will revolve around them.
>>
>>53839160
>We may even have some blocks where none of the Gatewatch appear, although even those blocks will still be relevant to the larger story.
Partially wrong. Yes, stories not involving them will be tied in somehow to the main story arc, but there will be blocks/sets where the Gatewatch don't appear or have much influence, if any
>>
>>53829147
The most recent would be gutteral response.
>>
>People complaining about the Jacetice League
>Nicky B shows up and shits on all five of them at once
>Mic Drop worth insults with each one

>>53840488
I remember that back when disney was still good and not a pure money-sucking machine people would fall all over themselves to voice disney villains because they always got the best lines.
>>
>>53840418
It's a break though. Or rather, at the time there was an argument within R&D about wether RG can get counterspells that only works against blue counterspells or not. After all, both colors can make things uncounterable, so there's no great difference between doing that in response to a counterspell and straight up countering it, right? Well, that's what the people who eventually won out on the Shadowmoor design team thought at least.

These days, the idea is that RG does the same thing only by making spells uncounterable at instant speed, or counter removal spells by giving creatures hexproof or indestructible and so on.
>>
>>53829367
Right clearly the reason everyone hated two set blocks is that they were still too long. The stories weren't rushed enough.
>>
>>53841106
The stories will be less rushed now as we will be stay on the same plane for as long as the story demands. Some we will visit for only a single set, some we will visit for two, three, possibly more, consequtive sets.
