Pretty Marines.

I had a pretty fucking moronic one when I was a dumb kid. The 'lavamarines', where I tried to paint them in lava-camouflage and it came out as an orange-red-yellow fucking mess, every time. I ruined so many models before I gave up.

I eventually realised I was just too shit at painting to make it look anywhere near what I wanted (and would never get better, Dyxpraxia sucks), so I settled for more basic colour schemes. Still shitty, but less likely to inflict eye cancer.

Not space marines but my Dark Eldar Kabal ended up getting totally justified in canon by the introduction of the Ynnari years later.

Looked at the random Kabal creation tables on 1d4chan recently and found that it could output a Kabal very close to mine also.

So that's nice.

For shitty ideas; I once wanted to make a space marine chapter that was basically just the Ultramarines but with a different name because Ultras had gotten such a bad rep and were so widely hated.

I remember being at a GW a long time back (easily 5 years now) and encountering a guy who was basically sperging over the back story of his custom Marine chapter.

I can't remember what they were called but they were a Chapter that engaged in constant war with some kind of space lizard race also native to their home planet.
The Chapter would take the brown hide of the lizardmen and use it to decorate parts of their armour primarily their shoulder pads.

However the greenstuff job he had done didn't look like scale hide, it looked like the same texture easter eggs had. This combined with the chapters purple with gold trim colour scheme basically made the marines look like Cadbury Easter eggs half unwrapped.

I mentioned this to the store manager (who as a friend of mine) and it basically stuck. That guys chapter was now known as the Cadbury Easter Marines.

I recently ran a psuedo RPG set during the Great Crusade/Heresy, but with different Primarchs and legions that the players made. And oh boy did some of the players make some real cancer. The most cringe including by far was the XIV Legion: The Sapphire Dragons. Highlights included:
>being one of the lost legions
>cutting a deal with the chaos gods to get his legion power with no mutations
>Built his own empire on the fringes of space
>was an even greater fedora tipping atheist than the Emperor
>made this atheism into a psuedo religion (that was roundly rejected by literally everyone else)
>tried to make the Admech a secular science organization, and failing that he kicked out all the Admech in his territory, and built his own science and engineering department that followed logic and reason
>constantly tried to be best friends with the Eldar and a Necron dynasty he accidentally woke up

At the very least when it got to the crunch of the game, the Sapphire Dragons failed hilariously at just about everything.

The idea behind TAKE THE KNOT (i can't even remember their fucking names now) was that they were Space Marines who ruled over a prison world that was a combination of Necromunda and Mad Max. They would go out into the wasteland to launch raids and kill criminals, and recruit promising younglings as aspirants. Sort of a Space Marine penal legion. The TAKE THE KNOT thing was because they were supposed to have a hangmen motif, and consider themselves executioners.

My custom chapter is dumb theh have a mutated ossomudula which causes their vocsl chords to slowly ossify as they age so they lose their voices over time. They fight without a battlecry and they use vox implants amongst themselves to compensate. Theyre said to be on good terms with much of the imperium because they tend to keep their mouths shut and their bolters pointed at xenos and heretics.

Also they keep the shrunken heads of favored serfs and fallen marines as honored tokens.

I had a chapter when I was a kid that was based off of not wanting to repaint the secondhand army i'd assembled. They were made up of outcasts, failures, deserters and remnants of other chapters. Mostly that meant that they were painted all hodgepodge, and I'd sometimes leave a shoulder pad off of their armor, or repaint a damaged section of armor with another chapter's colors. Additionally, I'd pry panels off of vehicles, strip the paint on just that part, repaint/sticker it as a different chapter, and then stick it back on. It was really silly looking.
