The way I do it is I make a set of rules, based on some kind of moral ideal or alignment. Write them down before starting.
Then I follow these rules with crazy devotion. Most of the fun is seeing how "technically right" I can get, as I see the whole paladin idea as a messed up absolutist trying to make a gray world black and white.
That is why they get so much power, they strictly follow the rules to the point of con, so they can spend more points on other pros. Like a more sublte idea based min-max setup, rather then strictly stats.

Writers need to bend over backwards to make things a threat for him, and nothing short of dimension-destroying gods are able to actually provide a challenge for him; Those gods usually don't provide interesting moral conflicts. In fact, the moral conflicts that come up in Superman are usually just a matter of people questioning how and why he uses his overwhelming power; Something that has some moral depth, sure, but don't be surprised when people are waaaaaay more interested in dissecting Batman going out to do the exact same things at a far greater risk to himself.

I've always hated that theory.
