Favorite MtG card thread, try not to just post catds that are good but ones that just fun as well
This little guy.
Even Wizards loves it: "Our condolences to everyone who has been killed by an ornithopter" - Wotc (1995).
A joke, which wasn't particularly funny, which people latched onto, and is now in high demand, despite being crap. This card is a meme and a metaphor for everything I like and everything I hate in Magic.
I'm also partial to treasured find.
My first deck back in 2002 or so was based around Unnatural Selection and Engineered Plague. The deck was grindy and tons of fun, and revolved around crippling and stealing my opponent's creatures with cards like Phyrexian Infiltrator and Empress Galina. When Artificial Evolution came out I threw a couple in to change the Wall limitation on US to clam or whatever, which let me do "1: Target creature can't attack this turn." I'm sure it was pretty bad but we were all bad so I had no problem racking up tons of wins with it.

beep boop
I'm not pretending it's any good.
Endless fun in commander
>>53782193
Anything with level up for a single mana is good.
>>53782193
I mean, it's not bad.
Tormented Soul, royal assassin, dark ritual, phyrexian arena. I run a deck with Last Wish, Dark Favor, Unholy Strength, Tormented Soul, Bonesplitter, inkfathom Infiltrator, and a couple royal assassin's and kill spells, as well as four dark rituals and a phyrexian arena. It's swingy as fuck and VERY vulnerable to removal but that's what last wish is for. Problem is I spent all that time making that deck amd it's really not very fun to play after 1 to 2 games because its so fast. It is fun swinging for 7 on like turn 2 to 3 and then the creature dies and I drain the opponent for 7 mot plus life gain. Last Wish was the first intelligent decision I made for that deck in a while.

also i love her.
>>53787601
She's actually really pretty for not having an actual body.
I love (a)symmetrical effects.
It's just so damn useful.
Much fun was had back in the day, still my favourite even though he's less useful now.
I'm not a competitive shitter I swear, I just genuinely love this guy's ability. I've always loved interactions with the graveyard, and this card, Lhurgoyf, and Vengevine are my favorite graveyard matters cards.
I like stuff that isn't overly complicated or too vanilla it seems. I like anthem effects and powering stuff up.
YOU'RE GOING TO DIE AND YOU'RE GOING TO DO IT RIGHT NOW
It's not fun unless you're trying desperately to not kill yourself by accident.
>>53781758
Icy Manipulator was one of my absolute favorites back when tapping artifacts turned them off and tapping blockers prevented their combat damage. It's still okay now, but back then it was the ultimate "do anything" artifact. You'd get crazy boardstates and blindside people with some tap interaction that they never saw coming. Some of the best Magic ever.
I love the value this guy gives, he trades with any creature, he flies and beats for 1, and he is easy to recur. Plus the art and general aesthetic of the card is sweet.
Because fuck ALL your shit
This or Gilder Bairn.
My first card worth anything really.
It's also a great source of shenenigans, infinite life combos, and other fun stuff.

Murder. Instant. Destroy target creature. Dude with a fucking greatsword through his chest.
There's so little there, yet it has so much weight behind it.

Really glad to see whats going on

Did you know that an original Island Fish Jasconious is $7 USD? Insane. Very cool casts though.

>>53781758
I, like any magic player, want extra turns. However as an edh player I prefer fairer effects, so Timesifter to me is the perfect way to give everyone a chance at some extra turns. Well everyone except cedh players, which is just an added bonus.
Refuse to play Modern until they unban my bad boy.
>>53787601
Good taste anon.
>>53781758
I started playing around odyssey block and my favorite deck then was UG threshold, with Mulch as my favorite card. The simple value it gives is amazing.
When they put a similar effect on a creature, I instantly fell in love.
As a beginner i thought This + Madcap Skills was the strongest combo in all of Magic. Good times.
>>53791588
Some colors are more prone to including/requiring a bunch of their own color of mana than others. Blue is supposed to be utilitarian and results-oriented, rather than picky or intolerant. Blue pretty much never costs, or produces, a whole bunch of blue mana.
Red on the other hand is the color of Ritual spells (or it is nowadays) and has the firebreathing ability. Red also has nonbasic hate and cares about mountains now and then. Also, since Kargan has firebreathing the devs probably assumed you'd only put him in a deck that makes a lot of Red anyway.
started in onslaught and this guy has been getting me some sweet sweet card advantage ever since
One of my favorite burn cards. Nothing more satisfying then putting one out turn 1.
You called for me boss?
Such legendary art.
comfiest land of all time
>>53792681
I made an EDH deck with this. I had an unusually high number of high-cost cards but still figured, since a third of my deck is land anyway, the odds were good someone would go instead of me a fair amount of time. Upon playing it, I proclaimed, "I have successfully randomized the turn order!" And one of our players just got up and walked away from the table.
I asked him what's up, and he said, "just let me know when it's my turn" and started playing the Binding of Isaac. This guy is usually the most cool headed bro ever, so him walking away with salt told me I had dun goofed. I took the card out of the deck after that game.
To each their own, though.
one of the best cards ever
>>53793003
>Burn
Also this card is a MASSIVE MEME. Anyone that lets it stay is either a fucking idiot or also playing red and willing to just bolt it.
>>53793117
So what if I play burn? This is a thread about favorite cards ya dingus. And yeah that's the best outcome if they want it sac'd, they just took 4 to the face turn 1 against burn.
>>53781758
My favorite aspect of him is that everyone remembers he's got a busted ability, and nobody remembers that he's a 5/5 and can fuck your shit up.
I love this nigga. He's a rad dude all about the homies, and even though ulting with walkers is hard, dropping his is so much fun. It's a real shame Wizards is trying their hardest to erase his existence, since there's been 3 other R/G walkers since he dropped.
>>53793064
Oh yeah. I get that. I have a guy in my play group who hates it. Last time I played it I copied it too. No one liked that, least of all me because I had to keep track of it all.
Also I remembered another favorite of mine for the art. Shell of the last Kappa.
>>53781758
I have won so many games out of nowhere with this guy such a perfect threat you don't even know is a threat until it's too late. EDH player here so I usually just sit back and make a 40+ mana and leave people wondering "okay what it's all for" when suddenly I attack with better Storm Crow and they are taking 40 dmg

This card is playing magic in it's purest form. No stalling, no waiting, nothing hidden. People play spells whether they want to or not.

Either of these. Master Transmuter has both great functionality (despite being easy to remove) and gorgeous art and can she lead into some hilarious interactions in my Myr deck.
Krenko is Krenko. He's the reason I finally built a Goblin deck after refusing to build red for so long. The salt he generates when he can resolve turn 3 with haste is priceless everytime.
I really want this effect to be on something playable.
Boldwyr Intimidator has the best fucking flavor of any card ever. Absolute flavor jackpot. Cowards can't block warriors.
I only wish it didn't cost seven fucking mana for a 5/5. That's just not good enough mechanically. If it was even one mana cheaper I would force it into every cube and commander deck ever.
>>53800323
Shit be damaging to the opponent
kird ape is probably my legit favorite but this is a less obvious pick
i played both in a deck when i was a youngin. orcish lumberjack too.
>>53800504
Tinder Wall and Orcish Lumberjack are the forgotten greats of the Ice Age RG ramp.
Mana Vault is my favorite mana rock. It's obviously very powerful, but it has a proper drawback and requires that you use the power in a calculated fashion instead of slamming it like a Sol Ring.
I only wish that it would do 2 damage instead of one. Then the card would be perfect.
>>53781758
There will simply never be anything that ever comes close for me.
My all time favourite goblin. I always used to play goblin decks just for flavour, so naturally I'd lose quite a bit. There's nothing quite like saccing all your lands then rushing your opponent as a last ditch.
Simple and effective. And has got me wins through worship
>>53796501
Elemental tribal is probably coming on C17 m8
>>53792681
Looks like a yugioh card
Codex Shredder. It looks so simple and harmless, but in slow multiplayer games it gets crazy good and multifunctional.
The most obvious function is to just have it return a card - any card - from your graveyard to your hand. While that sounds underwhelming for 1+5 mana, it's still very powerful at instant speed (a sudden Commandeer can have quite an impact, or if you manage to leave 5 mana open you can EOT return any answer in your graveyard to cast next turn), and it's colorless, which grants this effect to colors that usually don't have it.
It also supports self-mill, which is pretty obvious, and in the rare cases where opponent mill is useful you can use it for that as well. However, the fact that it's no-cost instant-speed mill allows for some fun tricks. Anybody stupid enough to tutor something to the top of their library gets their card milled, Future Sight and other cards revealing your top card suddenly get a huge drawback for your opponents, and it can really screw with cards like Sensei's Divining Top (draw ability) and Volrath's Shapeshifter. On the other hand, you yourself get more value out of your Future Sight by milling unwanted cards, can get your Long-Term Plans card in one turn (cast EOT, mill, untap, mill, draw tutored card), and so on.
But what really makes it shine is the combination of self-mill and the regrowth effect. You play Codex Shredder for a single mana, and then you just have it slowly mill you every turn (even if you're not playing self-mill). At some point, either through the self-mill or through normal gameplay, there will be a card in your graveyard that's worth spending 5 mana on, at which point you can retrieve it EOT once you happen to have 5 mana open. (Keep in mind, only the first mana is an active investment, the other 5 can and will be spent at a time you happen to have enough spare mana anyways, unless the value you get from it is worth even more (returning a boardsweeper right when you need it, etc).)
I love this card.
>>53793064
The problem with Timesifter is that the turn order is not truly randomized. It's extremely heavily weighed towards people playing high CMC cards, to the point where decks with lots of low CMC cards often don't get a single turn for like 20 consecutive turns in a 5 player game (it gets worse as there are more players in the game, as the only chance you get at a turn is if everyone playing high CMC cards exiles a land). I used to love the card in casual 1v1 but in my current group it just means I don't get another turn until the end of the game, save for the rare occasion where I get a single turn until the end of the game. By the time I get my second turn (if the game takes that long and I'm still alive), Timesifter has already exiled my entire library.
It certainly is a lot of fun when it does properly randomize the turn order, like in most 1v1 casual matches. But it's extremely unfun when it just makes 1 or 2 players skip their turns for the rest of the game.

Force Bubble can actually be quite good, either by
a) playing it in a context where you only get attacked once per turn (1v1, 2HG, multiplayer with attack restrictions (such as 'attack left')) and bouncing it in response to its sacrifice trigger; or
b) stacking it with other damage prevention/replacement/misc defensive effects, making sure you take no more than three non-replaced/prevented damage each turn; or
c) playing it together with 'damage everyone' effects such as Pestilence, Sulfuric Vortex, etc. Sun Droplet may be better in certain circumstances, but Force Bubble replaces the damage leaving your life total unharmed (whereas Sun Droplet can be destroyed to deny you the life recovery); as such it's also not hosed by anti-lifegain, plus since it's a replacement and not prevention it's not even affected by 'can't be prevented'. (It also stops 'when you deal [combat] damage' effects from triggering.)
Note that A, B and C are not mutually exclusive. You can build a deck around this kind of stuff. Hell, you can build various decks around this kind of stuff.
Even in the worst case, it's still an expensive sorcery-speed Fog. And as with Fog cards, you can play it with recursion for repeatable damage prevention.
The best reason not to play Force Bubble though is that Delaying Shield often serves the same purpose better with similar shenanigans.

so much this.
black weenie cards are aesthetic
>>53818313
same vein
>>53812944
Not the anon you replied to but i'd imagine it feels a lot like a turn 2 win in modern and a turn 1 win in legacy.
What does this say about me
>>53818942
whew lad
>>53812911
I personally like pic related because its pretty easy to get out and also has such a bid difference...
This guy is stupid fun to play.
>>53819357
Drop a white mana in there
>>53818942
bane? fire?
brother.
>>53781758
The centrepiece of my first competitive (and very successful) deck.
>>53781758
Path to Exile, but only if it has this art.
The absolute pinnacle of form, function and flavor. There are equals, but I don't think anything is better.
>>53820500
I like that art a bunch, but I also have a thing against spells that aren't actually spells. This is just some dude going to the afterlife or something, which is something I'd prefer on Rest in Peace (which also has great art.)
As a result, I'm boring and prefer the Leonin being blown apart art.
>>53794857
top kek
>>53820651
No, see, that art is the absolute perfect representation of what Path to Exile actually does. In fact, none of the others comes close.
Arthurian Legend says that when Arthur was mortally wounded by Mordred, he did not in fact die, but was instead put into a coma and ferried off to a mystical land called Avalon, where he would lie in wait for the time when Britain would need him again in its most dire hour.
That art is very evocative of the Arthurian legend, and think of what PtE does; you exile a creature, not killing it or destroying it, but putting it beyond anyone's reach. Not only that, but you also get a land for the creature lost. Thus the art: a hero is being sent out to sea, with his wife/lover and child, as well has his subjects looking on (see the torches in the back?). Is he dead? Or just sleeping, waiting for the next time he is needed? And in return, you get a land (Avalon).

I understand and accept your taste, but the following is why I disagree:
I actually really liked humanoid Slivers. They are a natural result of a species that adopts the beneficial traits of the things it consumes and encounters. Bio evolutionary race going humanoid is fine. They all at least look like Slivers.
But to me, Megantic doesn't look like a Sliver at all. IT's face isn't slivery. It's claw hands don't look like Slivers. It doesn't have the telltale bug chitin or tentacles of the new slivers. I dislike that card on art alone.
As an actual card, it's k.
>>53820862
Right, but it's very difficult to magically compel someone to do that in an immediate and succinct fashion.
>>53814972
If you don't already I suggest you make an EDH deck around him I don't think he will ever be good in modern.
>>53789854
I fucking love Phyrexian Etchings.
It's eats, It rapes, It's 10/10 with trample, and when I ramp a Hero's Bane to 34/34 and sac it to the hungry hippo, everyone hates me
>>53800228
It can eat itself to get bigger. It. can. eat. itself. to. get. bigger.
This guy. Back when I was in either 5th or 6th grade I thought that Leviathan was the shit, then I opened this guy. While I have long since lost the one I originally opened all those years ago (along with like 98% of the cards I had from back then) I still keep one in my B/W EDH deck and if he ever became standard legal again I would probably try to build some stupid deck with him.
I love this dumb shit.
First rare I ever got, and god damn do I love it, it really evokes the feel of playing giant ass deathmachines in green. I wish supertrample was still a thing.
>>53825665
Damn good taste.
>>53810732
I always liked this one.
>>53826001
god 7th edition had ugly art
>>53783533
I was introduced to the game by a guy who used that card along with Quest for Ula's Temple to cheat Angels and shit out really fast. Ever since then I have been a pretty ardent Johnny.
>>53826153
Yeah, the later versions definitely looked cleaner, though I was always partial to the glowy green smoke on the 7th version.
Easily my favorite EDH deck, too.
>That global effect that's easily abusable with untap effects
>People wanting to keep you around for more cards but forgetting that you're building up mana
>An actually cute looking knife-ear
>>53826029
I have hit Brilliant Plan with Mizzix at 4xp so many times that it has gained a reputation in my playgroup.
U=Draw 3 is just so nice.
>Dead
>I steal your boots
>Huh.
I have never seen this car elicit any other response than something along the lines of, "Oh."
>>53826296
Such an all-star in my Samut Legendary tribal. I've gotten the parlay four times in a turn and dumped it all into Chord.
>>53819992
I am glad the reprinted it enough to bring the price down but I really prefer the old art.
>>53818942
I made my Mizzix X spell tribal and its the Izzet deck I've always wanted. Actual burn in EDH was a pipe dream of mine before. I run Jhoira but its basically Eldrazi City with Wipes.
>>53801663
Thats the most gob thing I've ever heard.
>>53800323
it's a nice card in the newer Ezuri, as one of the many toolbox cards you can run.
>>53801235
it gets so dirty with voltaic key effects
>>53806436
>Atraxa infect makes its rounds and group makes house rule that infect wins at 20
>This kills my Blightsteel Colossus wincon for Jhoira + GAAIV
>Throw Phyrexian Unlife in 3 different white decks
>20 infect rule is only for Atraxa now
I hated Atraxa Infect but damn if that rule didnt suck.
>>53826855
thats kinda BS m8. But then again, so's Atraxa.
On topic, Zameck and master biomancer are tied for my favorites, cause they can make undying/persist cards come back forever
>>53826321
You know, you're right. All it takes is one guy with boots or greaves and you've got "R: creature gets hexproof" Also works as a combat trick. Sign me the fuck up.
>>53809508
I like how he went through his own little storyline
Not a single motherfucking lightning bolt. You disappoint me, /tg/.
I just lost The Game
>>53801636
This guy knows what's up.
>>53805857
I had a flicker deck back in timespiral rav standard with her that my lgs hated
>>53799708
You are why cockatrice is terrible.
>>53800032
it's reminder text. Still the best though.
>>53815615
huzzzah I cast down a wall to block your vile beasts effect.
>flicker
>>53817253
I love it.
>>53813244
>7 mana and needs to stick around for a turn to destroy a colored permanent
Meh.
>>53820876
But you agree oldslivers were better mechanically right.
>>53806936
Came here to post this. I just love things that are not just one shots but continuously usable, to set up loops or whatever, and this thing does it all by itself.
>>53805857
Also as someone who played NicFit for a while in a Show and Tell meta, there's nothing quite like using Birthing Pod on this to find an Ashen Rider.
>>53831852
Explain please. I don't play MTG online, only irl.
Omniscience, the most blue card ever, with Enter the infinite.
>>53783369
This also, that arena flavor text is 10/10
