THREAD QUESTION

What do you think of the Metamorphosis 2.0 changes?
>>
>>53767605
>What do you think of the Metamorphosis 2.0 changes?
doesnt effect edh
so i dont care
>>
>>53767542
A good suggestion is to fill the deck with a bunch of low cost life gain spells to be able to trigger Extort as many times as possible while keeping enough mana for Karlov to deal with large threats as they arrive. Creature tokens would also be a good idea.
>>
>this sperg who lurked for 8 hours just to include the discord
Hilarious. Remember, include a magic card in the OP or people won't reply.
>>
>>53767605
I like having one single large set rather than blocks. I always end up not caring about the second set anyway, and it was really bad when they were doing 3 sets.
Also I'm glad they realized that they need to tone down the Gatewatch
>>
>>53767628

Whenever I try to find the post explaining the changes it says I don't have access

Can anybody link to me the new announcements?
>>
>>53767662
Basically build EDH Soul Sisters with plenty of life-based draw to recover after wipes. It's a lot of fun
>>
>>53767706
http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/metamorphosis-2-0-2017-06-12
Here you go anon
>>
>>53767706
I can give you a good TLDR if thi

#1—The Fall, Winter, and Spring Sets Will All Be Large Sets That Are Drafted Alone. Blocks no longer exist, sets may be connected, or not.

#2—The Summer Set Will Be a Revamped Core Set

#3—Less Gatewatch characters/cards

#4—The Masterpieces Series are now case by case basis, no longer going to be in every set.
>>
>>53767769
I'm actually pretty okay with this.
>>
>>53767769
I kinda like that they're dialing back the masterpiece series. They should be more special and rare, not just a shitty $15 Divert on a horrible card frame.
>>
>>53767812
I really couldn't see a reason to complain.

Ever since I started magic in in early theros I was always confused by the artificial constraint of having every thing stuck in blocks.

Why make R&D job harder by forcing everything into this pattern?
>>
>>53767769
on paper it sounds good, but I'm sure there will be plenty of time to bungle it in practice
>>
>>53767628
It kind of does, since reintroducing Core Sets lets them do reprints better.
>>
What's the angriest you guys have been with edh?

For me it was this
>friend is new to magic
>he's friends with everyone in my playgroup
>let him use one of my simpler decks so he can get hang of the game.
> decide to play after everyone got off work the next night.
> let friend borrow deck so he can look at the cards and have our roommate explain to him how to play the game.
> friend I let borrow deck is a smoker but I didn't think much of it since the cards are double sleeved and in a satin tower
> apparently friend decided to smoke while our other friend was explaining to him how to play
> after we play I take my cards back.
> next morning I notice the deck he used smelled like cigarette smoke
> cards themselves didn't smell but still pissed because the sleeves reek and since they were eclipse sleeves I had to pay about 15 for 100 plus all the time it took to double sleeve and the cost of the perfect fit sleeves.
>pretty expensive deck too with a lot of sentimental value since it was stuff I've collected over years of playing
> friend just lost his job, flunked out of school , and is horribly depressed so I'd feel bad about bringing it up or asking him to replace the sleeves because he'd feel even worse the he already does.

Does anyone know how to get rid of cigarette smell off of sleeves?
I tried washing them a bit but it only helped slightly
>>
>>53767931
>they will reprint anything edh relevant
>they will reprint anything relevant
>>
>>53767931
That was my thought also. Core sets also seemed to have a wider variety of mythics/rares that you couldnt find in the non-core.

>>53768008
They reprint plenty of neat stuff in core sets, also new things that are completely EDH relevant.

>>
>>53768104
Yisan came from core sets, same with boonweaver.

The fucking titan cycle came from a core set.
>>
>>53768104
Let's take a gander at M15.
>Boonweaver Giant
>Chord of Calling
>Hornet Queen
>Painland Cycle
>Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth

Imagine how long it would take them to get an opportunity to reprint, say, Urborg in a Standard set otherwise?
>>
>>53767880
The only problem I have is there is the potential for six planes in a single Standard rotation, so there may not be as much variety as the article would imply.
>>
>>53768104

Unsummon is highly underrated, and anyway those are jus commons (not to mention, back in the day, there were good commons in core like doom blade)

I would love to be able to draft a new core set and pick up random eternal witnesses, oblivion rings, and such
>>
>>53768121
Cut some of the less effective aggro/burn cards. I'm looking at: Volcanic Fallout, Electrickery, Shrine of Burning Rage, Furyblade Vampire, Skarrgan Firebird, Paragon of Fierce Defiance, and Shard Phoenix.

How would you build Nin? What I've got right now is a bunch of token generation and creatures/spells that do damage based on cards in hand.
>>
>>53768612
Darksteel plate and it's Ilk are much better than tokens. Stuffy doll, myr, reef worm, chasm skulker.
>>
I have a Mizzix question: What are the most used win cons for her?
My deck was designed to have a lot of board bounce spells (politics/disruption), a lot of 2 CMC or less draw spells, not that many creatures and at least 10 different counterspells.

My wins seems to come from either annoyingly long games where people run out of steam and I can start wrecking their fields or repeated Capsize/Fanning the Flames.
While I don't mind the deck winning in long games, I'd rather it not be EVERY game.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
>>
>>53768612

Ehh, I would just go more control, and use her ability on random utility dorks like solemn sim and trinket mage, you only need one target for her ability

Oh and a darksteel plate so nin can get real kinky
>>
>>53768719

Extra turns

It's pretty easy to howl of the horde a time stretch once you get going
>>
>>53768719

My friends mizzix deck wins turn 4 regularly, if he untaps with mizzix it's over, he goes off with extra turns
>>
>>53768612
Infinite mana and force your opponents to draw their own decks as punishment for having the audacity to play creatures. Also some cute things like stuffy doll and control elements with Young Pyromancer and Talrand to give you tokens to feed to Nin
>>
>>53767605
>discord

Stop putting that cancerous reddit shit in the OP holy fuck
>>
>>53768719
My friends gameplan is to build up counters as fast as possible, and then keep playing high impact cmc spells.

eventually combo out via storm, and usually with mind's desire.
>>
>>53768728
I don't know whether this bends the rules or not, and I don't care. It's too relevant to resist.
>>
>>53768805
If you don't like it, don't go there. I don't, but it's one fucking line in an OP that's not even remotely pushing its character cap. We lose literally nothing.
>>
I want to get/make a WG or Bant Populate/Copy/ETB value deck. I already have Xenagos Ramp, Melek and Mazirek combo. What WG or Bant commander should I get that is different enough my others, but also fit the archetype?
>>
>I play Mind Over Matter
Okay

>I can activate Temple Bell at instant speed
Sure, but it hasn't hit the board yet
>...I don't think that's how that works.

This is an actual conversation I had last night with a guy who has played Magic for five years that I know of. How do you handle people who are just so very wrong about the rules?

>>

>What do you think of the Metamorphosis 2.0 changes?

Anything with less Jacetice League is a good thing. Also glad to see core sets making a return, it'll hopefully open up some slots in the main sets for new stuff instead of trying to make reprints or functions. Having said that, I don't think we'll get anything too exciting from them, as anything that needs to be reprinted for Eternal formats is "too powerful" for Standard.
>>
>>53767981
Sounds like it's all on you buddy. If your that anal about keeping your cards nice and even remotely pristine you don't lend them out period. Or at least be honest with the expectations of others handling your stuff.
Just buy new sleeves and and forget about it.
>>
>>53768975

Derevi is pretty cool with tokens and populate, untapping lands and what not is fun

Trostani is literally populate: the commander, but there's also Rhys for token making, and tolsimir wolf blood also seems playable for gw tokens
>>
>>53768978

Somtimes people just get confused, especially if there's some wishful thinking going on

Just be patient and explain

I would also put it out there that Reiterate Combo's are a thing, esspecially with Fireminds Forsight.

Grab Reiterate, Reset, and Lightning Bolt. Cast Reset, in response Reiterate With Buyback, get infinite mana, Lightning Bolt, Reiterated enough to kill everybody.

It is an instant speed combo, that with 3 counters on Mizzex Costs 2UUURRR with just Foresight in hand.

I crammed in proliferate to my mizzix, its easy to win when your spells cost 2 mana and deal 50 damage wth buyback. I get to durdle with planeswalkers so its fun to pilot and you still get to win.
>>
>>53772295
The lack of Planeswalkers in my Mizzix is a conscious choice (to avoid putting any sort of bulls eye on myself), but out of curiosity, which Planeswalkers?
>>
>>53772339
I only run a few; teferi, ralzarek, jtms, jace unraveller of secrets, and baby jace. Only baby jace and ralzarek are actually wincons the other walkers are tempo shields that force all eyes off mizzix.
>>
>>53767981
Tough situation, but since it seems like you don't have the expectation that he replace them, that makes it easier. Try something like:
>hey, could you please avoid smoking while playing with my cards, I ended up having to replace the sleeves since they reeked of cigs.
>I'm not trying to make you feel bad or anything like that.
>I just wanted to be clear with what I was asking and the reason for it.

Pick an underpowered commander and try to make it playable.

For Shimatsu, I'd add the following:
>When Shimatsu enters the battlefield, it deals damage equal to the number of +1/+1 counters on it to target player and each creature he or she controls.

Initially I thought of only making damage players, making him sort of a red Maga, but I thought that would still be weak (Shimatsu simply sucks too much).
Though I realize that hitting the player's creatures makes him broken with Repercussion...

On the subject of ordering cards online, where is best to order from if you're on the West Coast best coast of Canada?
>>
>>53774539

idk one guy in my playgroup had him and i dont think it got stale

i mean you can say any tuned list is gonna get stale because it has lots of tutors, but thats never happened to me, the only time a deck has gotten less fun over time is when its too good or too bad for my playgroup. evenly matched decks never get stale for me

if you really have ADD that hard and need more randomness, just skip the tutors but build the rest of the deck competitively
>>
>>53774606

tcg player lets you find the best deals, like if you dont care about slightly played cards, you can shave a dollar or two here and there, and buy only from the sellers with the best listed prices

but the downside is that they come from different sellers, so they all come at different times

cardkingdom's prices are pretty high, but they generally have everything you need and they are based in seattle so you would get the cards pretty quick

>>53775279
Sure, whatever happens AFTER the flicker might turn into a complicated board, but this has nothing to do with trying to jam an instant during a single trigger trying to resolve.

You resolve any trigger as a whole. It even indicates this linguistictly on the card with the word 'then'.

So. RTFC.
>>
>>53775279
There is zero ambiguity in the situation. You cannot do anything "during the flicker" with Brago. There is only "before the flicker" and "after the flicker, and you absolutely never have any opportunity to do anything during the time the permanents have left the battlefield and will return.

It's as clear cut as it can possibly be.
>>
>>53775373
That's not a rebuttal, anon. It isn't complicated unless you're too dumb to understand how a very simple flicker effect works.

It's common for people to play Magic for a long time and still have a loose notion about how the stack works.
Specially in EDH, where this kind of interaction is meta dependant. In my group, as example, hardly do any "in response" plays, so a few of the players there would be confused about the stack too.

>>53778162

Our playgroup is fine about the stack, but if multiple people want to respond (e.g. More than one person is playing blue), we always have to remind ourselves about priority.

Well, it says you get an extra mana whenever you tap a land for mana. You tap Crystal Vein for its sacrificing ability so you would get an additional mana. I used to think that tactical scooping had no place in casual EDH... But now I realize I had a warped view of casual EDH. I used to think that strategies like Stax, infinite combos, chaos, etc all had no place in casual EDH.
Nowadays I realize that these things are fine for casual EDH, but with that realization I've also realized that tactical scooping should be fine as well. The truth is that if someone is playing politically they not only can't appear to be weak but they have very few ways to take out cards without losing standing. So are you going to tell me that they should either A) get very lucky or B) willingly lose the game because they have no options?
No, neither of those choices are acceptable. The truth is that tactical scooping is the most powerful tool in a clever player's arsenal, not using it puts political players at a supreme disadvantage. If you feel like you're allowed to use supremely strong strategies "because they can be interacted with" or supremely strong decks "because they can be interacted with" then I feel that I'm allowed to use supremely strong tactical scooping "because you can do something else".
And just as you say "Well you should run more interaction!" I say "Well you should read about Mutually Assured Destruction!" and then you can say "Well I did but it's just a card game!" and I reply WITH THE EXACT SAME SENTIMENT towards combo.
So at the end of the day I say this; If the point of casual edh is still to win, which it obviously is if you're running $2000 combo decks, then I'm going to do what I can to keep you from winning, which is to keep you from being able to interact with me.

You should be able to afford some of the better rocks, then: At least Mana Vault, possibly Crypt if the rest of your deck is on the cheaper side. This in addition to the normally good rocks: Sol Ring, Thought Vessel if you're drawing a lot of cards, Diamonds and Medallions in monocolor, Coldsteel Heart and Prismatic Lens in nongreen, relevant signets in anything short of turbo tryhard.

I prefer a mix of Land Ramp and Rocks when I can get Land Ramp. You still run rocks, because a) Armageddon and b) More Rocks than anything else are available for immediate use, letting you chain ramp, but Land Ramp is probably the most reliable.

Don't trust dorks as your primary source of fast. They have summoning sickness even more universally than land ramp gets you your land tapped and will die as collateral damage to most major interchanges.

>>
Building a ramp-y Jund goodstuff deck. What would you say the minimum amount of ramp cards in a deck like that is and which ramp cards are the best?
Currently have: Sol Ring (obviously), Birds, Farseek, Cultivate, Nature's Lore, Wood Elves, Sakura-Tribe Elder and Fertilid.
>>
>>53780253
It's been discussed before. The problem with infect is that people have a higher perceived threat than it really is. And if pulled correctly, it can take out even a good player with a good deck out of the table early and he'll just have to watch everyone else play for half an hour.
My play group isn't good, yes, but it's what I have in my city, so I prefer to play every week than to have an infect deck that I'll never use.
The point is, EDH is still considered a casual format, and some stuff like infect and land destruction are taboos everywhere.

>>

>>53780272
What commander are you using?
Most decks will run around 10 ramp cards, so you might want to bump it up to 12-15. Kodama's Reach and Nature's Claim/Explosive Vegetation should probably be included. Solemn Simulacrum is good if you have any sac outlets or death matters cards. Chromatic Lantern is always good in a 3-color deck, as is Commander's Sphere. And you might also want to include something big like Boundless Realms
>>
This is the deck I've been working on for the longest time, and also my main excuse to build my collection of black staples. However, I feel it kind of has no direction. Seems a bit too much like it's just trying to be monoB good stuff some of the time.
I also have trouble with cards like Static Orb and Winter Orb, considering they completely screw me over, but I don't plan just yet on changing this deck to go with Mycosynth Lattice and Unwinding Clock and spread its focus even more just to survive those. Adding a colour would be interesting, but which BG commander would be interesting here? Any ideas?

Elves are heavily green but have a significant black and (multicolor) white component. There is no Abzan elf commander (there are abzan commanders that are good for elves but none of them are elves; much like mardu has no true angel commander, and even it's closer with Kaalia). It's fairly inevitable.

If you really want to play Hazezon, though, he's one of the Legends options that's still viable. >>53781459 called out Purph for the comes-into-play abuse, but Purph is monored while Hazezon gets you more tech (the Soul Sisters, say) from his other colors and can just run purph in the 99. If your meta isn't turbo cutthroat it'll work (and if you're reticent to drop more than 10 bucks on a single card, competitive EDH is beyond your reach)

Best of luck!

Now that this has been banned from standard, will it be worth it to pick some of them up for various edh decks?
>>
>>53781883
I'd rather they make a legendary abzan elf in some set or even the new core set as a wink to the edh community and leave the elves out of C17.
>>
>>53781852
The color combo names are actually based on different groups in lore. The plane of Ravnica houses a guild for each two color pair, which is what the two color combos usually get referred to as when people aren't referring to them by letter abbreviation. Alara had 5 three-color combos called shards and Tarkir had the other 5 three-color combos in the form of tribes. The 4 color combos are usually either called not-[missing color here] or are called after the 5 Nephilim, which were from Ravnica and were the first 4 color creatures ever printed.

>>
>>53781993
See, normally I wouldn't mind another elf deck, but seeing as they already reprinted Freyalise this very year, it would be a bit saturated imo to have another elf in C17.
I think it would waste the potential to other interesting tribes to get some needed support.
>>
>>53782017
It seems unlikely to me that we'd get tribes that need the love rather than tribes that people already like. I for one would love to see Pirates in Izzet or Grixis, but they've only got 14/15 new cards per deck and while I for one feel like they're a resonant tribe that after a long absence has come back in the last year or so with Kari Zev and her friends on Kaladesh and that black Smuggler lady from Conspiracy 2, and while I feel like a commander product, which doesn't have a worldbuilding constraint, removing the need to already be going (aero)nautical as a theme, would be a place where they could pick up some support... it's just not going to happen, there isn't enough already there.
>>
>>53781937

Do most people here play cutthroat? I play for fun mostly as the more it become just about winning the more it becomes about who spent more money. I have about 3.5k cards, maybe more/less...too many to count.

I built a 5 color legendary deck, every creature is legendary and multicolored, one wall from each color, only one mono colored spell from each, 5 artifacts. I think it's fun.

I returned around BFZ time frame and fell in love with colorless eldrazi, so I bought just about every one there is, and Ugin. Karn is steep but on my wish list. So I made a colorless eldrazi deck and kept artifacts at bay, because it's an Eldrazi deck and not an artifact deck, but if money is not object then it would clearly be more powerful as an artifact heavy, Eldrazi spiced, deck.

I've heard people talk about "theme deck" or "tribal", kinda like my legendary deck, made to fit a concept not simply the best cards available.
>>
>>53780336
I like people complaining after I fuck over their Mono whatever decks with a Mizzix cheapened Wake of Destruction.
>>
>>53782273
Personally? Fairly casual. EDH has a broad band of "Viable", and at a lot of tables you should be able to compete provided

>You have your general EDH deckbuilding theory down
You run about the right land/nonland ratio, you have at least a few cards in the cost 3- bracket that 'permanently' get you more mana (Industry Standard: 35-38 lands and ~10 ramp effects but some decks can diverge
>Your curve isn't terrible
Average CMC between 3 and 4 unless you're doing something bizarre (Cheating most if not all of your expensive cards with Jhoira; running a mono-colorless deck since colorless mana is easy to generate...)
>You have something to help you break out of linear/craw wurm play
Playing 6/6 french vanillas from your hand is not going to cut it: cards are a finite resource, after all. Using one card to make a 6/6 token every turn would be way better. Heck, making a lot of 1/1 tokens can work out for you. You don't have to infinite combo or instant win (some people will tell you so, but they're wrong), you can even midrange for the win but you need to have a way to out-value your opponents. with 40 life and more than one opponent, tempo kind of dies in EDH; card advantage is king, so be sure that your cards can make a good account of themselves. Value when they enter the battlefield, Value when they leave the battlefield, "all" or "each" effects, activated abilities (ESPECIALLY ones that don't require tapping), cards that work with your other cards to be more than the sum of their parts (Synergy does not have to be combo), and so on.
>>
>>53782323
I understand your entertainment as I love to drop Blood Moons on the table.
>>
>>53781937
Hazezon works in most metas. I would argue that the Purph list doesn't really lose much by being monored and what it does lose is made up for by a guaranteed turn 2-3 Purph. Of course, politics generally make the Purph deck the highest priority target and you can try a deck that sacrifices speed to be a midrange swarm deck with backup ETB or vice versa. I'm the kind of person that if a Commander list is (mostly) outclassed by another or if a list runs a lot of the same cards/similar strategy with a better goldfish I tend to get really discouraged from making the deck.

Call it autism if you'd like but that's what I was trying to convey, poorly albeit. Hazezon will work in most metas if you are comfortable with the fact that your list is likely to be doing really similar things to a Purph or Rhys deck.

So I've been thinking about a new deck since how much you can smash someone in the face or drain them etc. I know so far that it'll b either UB autistic twins or Orzhov (undecided here, contenders are Old teysa/Ayli/Kambal). My current ones are Hulk Karador, Xenagod and Rafiq. Which of those would feel more 'distinct' from what i currently have? Infinites are fine but i don't want to overdo them. Playgroup is Selvala Storm, Animar fully tuned and Ydris/Nekusar Wheels.

If you mean as a replacement affect, whenever your commander would switch zones (like from your field to your hand, graveyard, library or exile, or any two of those zones mixed in between) youay instead move it to the command zone. So if your kozilek hit the graveyard, you would be able to put it in the command zo e instead of shuffling it in.

Or, if you respond to the triggered ability another opponent has of the oldrazi being shuffled in, you can Exile it at instant speed.

>>
>>53784699
You can do Emperor. The people in the middle of the teams are the emperor and their spells can only affect/target people within 2 seats of themselves. All players can only attack enemies within 1 seat of themselves. The emperors' creatures all have the ability "T: a teammate gains control of this creature" since they cannot attack until a teammate dies.

This gammode completely breaks if an emperor is playing an infinite combo deck but if you all have fairly casual decks then it can work and it allows a 6-player game to not take so long.

Daretti is a great artifact commander, the precon isn't bad, and is easily made better by putting in better artifacts.
>>
>>53784767
I know this is probably fake but I don't understand all the hate for sol ring.
I mean mana vault and mana crypt cost upwards of $45 unless they're damaged and are harder to have in every deck.
Sol ring is really cheap, easy to find, and in every fucking commander precon.
So it's like either put in sol ring or don't but the only excuse for not having it in is not wanting to have it in. you can't blame it on price or hard to find because you could get a whole playset for under $10.
>>
>>53784767
Honestly I'd laugh if that was true as I burned my 10 copies of Sol Rings.
>>
>>53784877
Daretti, Teferi and Freyalise are really good monocolors, easily upgradable. And as said above, they have some nice staples for each color.
>>
>>53784964
Crypt is like $60 and Vault is $12. But it's not the cost that people dislike, it's how quickly they accelerate you when you "luck" out and play one turn-one.
>>
>>53785248
this. no one complains about sol ring's price. but dropping it turn one gives you such a massive advantage that it's easy to see why the card is hated.
>>
>>53785248
A damaged mana vault is 12. any better condition is like 40.
it ramps you fast but it gets colors that can't ramp a way of ramping

>>
>>53785380
"X of Ramos" rock cycle, they're 3 mana though
>>
>>53785305
I have seen so much games end in 4 turns whenever someones pulls off a Turn 1 Mana Crypt > Sol ring > Signet.

The advantage is so fucking stupidly huge that its just stupid that theres a chance that if you get your nutdraw theres not much else anyone can do against it.

Unless theres a blue player on the game ready to mental misstep you, and if that happens, your playgroup is already fucked up by having players abusing fast mana and other players ready to counter fast mana.
>>
>>53785248
Which is a bit stupid, you're already playing a 100 singleton deck, if you luck out on a sol ring, kudos. That won't happen every game.

>>
>>53785380
Diamonds are solid
Medallions aren't traditional rocks but they basically fill the same role.
Coldsteel Heart is an any-Rock
Prismatic Lens is a 2-mana rock that comes in untapped. It has to filter to make colored but it'll do.
The Ramos artifacts cost 3 but come in untapped so they're a net -2 much like diamonds. Do with that what you will.
