Mononoke Homebrew Edition!

Here is a mostly comprehensive guide to Mononoke creation. IT goes through everything but materials, but the main books rules for materials are way better than anything i could homebrew up.

https://pastebin.com/sLtd2ZMp

On top of this, i've got a bunch of mononoke to unload from last thread, and a bonus one for Dork in the shell guy. Please wait warmly.

First off, the ever popular spider tanks, Tachikomas

>->- [Form: Ranged] 3d6+16 physical damage to the target.

>«Apprehend the criminal!»: Attack / Engaged / 1#
>- [Form: Unarmed]Grabs the target causing [Shift:Paralysis]

I went somewhat simple on this one. Nothing terribly out of the ordinary. Mostly similar to a regular tank, with some better mobility.

This one hinges on the next one i'll post here. Overall really simple, but with a couple changes she could be very powerful.

Focus's on speed and weapon attacks. Pretty strong overall, but not a lot of variety in her skillset.

Really simple, but simple is strong. Most players won't have the INS to consistently avoid his attacks

Sup my kamigakari bros, I have a question for you. How would you stat out pic related as a PC? Is it possible out of the box, or would it need some homebrew?

(Explanation for those who don't know where he comes from: Sorey, the character in the pic, is accompanied by a bunch of otherworldly people called Seraphim, with whom he can perform a wacky fusion called Armatization, a la DBZ but without a time limit. What I want to do is make a character who fuses and defuses with an ally in combat, gaining different sets of abilities depending on if he's separate from his ally or not. The important bit is that there's gotta be a reason to defuse besides flavor points - in the game he's from, every character has their own personal moveset and each fusion is likewise unique, so you fuse and defuse depending on your needs.)
>>
>>53767323
Well, you could fluff a Dragon carrier to work like that.

Not a lot of homebrew at all. None of it mechanical.

Dragon Carrier A would be offensive, B would be defensive. Just fluff it to be his spirit fusion whatever.

Its wholly just refluffing.
>>
>>53768014

There's exactly zero reason to dismiss the fusion though, which is part of what makes the concept interesting to me. Last I checked, Dragon Carriers don't have any incentive to turn off their crystal transformations, do they?
>>
>>53767323
Yeah the one set of concepts commonly seen in anime that Kami doesn't do much with is fusion, alas.
>>
>>53768186
Not really, no.

Like KA said, thats one of the few things Kamigakari doesn't do.
>>
>>53768255
>>53768273

Would it be particularly broken if Contractor B got a set of powers made for it that allowed the PC to combine with their Mononoke? That'd probably duplicate the concept of fusion (or at least THIS particular concept) fairly smoothly I think.
>>
>>53768416
Contractor B is already stupid strong.
>>
>>53768443
No it isn't, don't be that guy. Also, the majority of why people say its broken is because it represents an extra set of actions, which fusing counteracts

>>53768416
I can't see it being particularly broken, but you'd need to change a fair amount of how contractor B works.
>>
>>53768416
I'm not sure. The main benefit of Contractor B is it gives you essentially an extra set of Talents and Timings to use them. This sounds like it'd just be giving PCs Mononoke Talents? Which is OK too. It just seems like maybe the realm of a homebrew Style instead, I think?

Like, the Auto ability could be something that benefits you only when you aren't fused, but still relies on the number of fusions you have available perhaps? Then the Talents aside from that could grant certain benefits from certain Mononoke... maybe?

I'm shit at design/homebrew, it's why I just translate.
>>
>>53768509

Can you explain to me what you think needs changing? I think I can see it but would like to hear a second opinion just in case I missed something.

>>53768528

Re: gaining the talents of a Mononoke, 'maaaaaybe'. It might be a good way to represent the fusion or it might not, not sure yet - I think this homebrew is gonna require a lot of digging at like, base system mechanics to make it not broken as fuck.

For reference, since a text description isn't really illustrative, this video's probably illustrative:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydNf0UD7jfQ

The characters are all fighting solo through most of the video so you get a look at their movesets, then at like 2:20 you get to see how the MC styles on the enemy and then fuses with an ally...and his moveset totally alters into something else. That'd be kinda the goal here - not so much stat boosts as 'do things neither of you could do alone'.
>>
>>53768955
well, the largest issue is that the talents for contractor all work on the contracted mononoke. Fusing with it would get rid of the mononoke as a unit, and make those talents Defunct.
>>
>>53769013

Right, makes sense. You'd have to buy a talent that says 'while Fused, you count as your Mononoke for the purpose of talents that affect it'.

(The question then becomes if this is a kosher thing to grant to a character, because getting a walking pile of stats who could solo entire fights is so not the goal here.)
>>
>>53769067
I would compare each of the contractors talents to the ones that normally work for player characters. and see how they stack up.

I can't imagine they are too strong, but they might be slightly higher than average.
>>
Hey. Can someone help clear up something for me? I'm a little confused by the Humanoid Mononoke entries. Because many of them are just humans with shards. But wouldn't that make them god hunters and not mononoke?
>>
>>53769700
Mononoke is a bit of a weird term because it's used to mean both "non-human entities that gain a soul and a Shard" and the list of enemies in the book, which indeed can be just humans.

Usually the difference in the book is <Mononoke> and [Mononoke]. The former is "any non-human entity with a shard" and the latter is the enemy list. One's a proper noun, the other's a game term. If it's still confusing for you, you can use what Rikizou uses in Sacreed Dragoon for the enemy list which is Critters. (So, the proper noun stays Mononoke and the game term becomes Critters).
>>
>>53769807
Honestly, the amount of them that are plain humans are actually not as many as that anon made it out to be. In the base book, only 2 of them are. The others are mostly humanoid youkai, and the first one is shard prisoner which i'd hardly call a god hunter.
>>
>>53770634

I'm talking about purely Humanoid-type Mononoke. Shard prisoners are humans who have come into contact with shards. Same with Special Bodyguards, Magical Girls, Hinoenma, Oni, and Demon Hunters. Only Suiko are actually mononoke in the more traditional sense.

>>53769807

That makes some sense. but I do wish they had been a bit more clear with the terminology.

Not really retranslating anything, unless it's a crappy passage and I need to remember what it says. I'm mostly just rewriting some parts and giving it a shiny coat of paint.

Prolouge -- Entirely rewritten, finished.
World Section -- Parts rewritten, finished.
GM Section (not including data) -- Mostly just picked out some changes to terms I'm making (like making 'Covenant of Souls' consistent throughout the document, making leyline lowercase, boring shit like that). Finished.
Rules Section -- Not Finished.
Player Section -- Not Finished.
Data -- Not Finished.

My intent is to do a full rewrite of the rules section to explain things more clearly all over the place. Then I'm going to be editing the data over again, making fixes and all that. Then I'll rewrite the Player Section.

Then... layout! And then done. And then Requiem!

How easy is this to GM?
I doubt I'll find a group on my own.
>>
>>53788760
Its pretty easy to GM.

Social stuff is mostly free-form, there's a complete guide for setting up each episode, and we've even figured out how to homebrew up monsters. Each monster's only got a handful of skills, and with talents and such you can customize as you please, or just use the basic.

Its really simple. There's some more complicated stuff that gets added in the expansions like sanctums, but these can be safely ignored till you understand the base game.
>>
>>53788760
Once your players learn the system it's actually shockingly easy. The only way I could see it being a headache is if your group is too boneheaded to keep track of their spirit die.

Other than that, it's very simple.

Over thirty years of gaming experience says you did fine with the math, stat ranges and even the estimation suggestions. The best way to test it out is with table play and I didn't run simulated battles yet.

One question that probably won't matter to most people or in most games, but how does a Godhunter vs. Godhunter combat run? I realize usually games would be GH vs. [Mononoke], but it could happen.

Is a GM expected to stat using [Mononoke]/Enemy data rules always or does the game simplicity when its standard statted Godhunter vs. Godhunter?

Those kinda questions would help when working out Fusion rules like those discussed above and when running mock simulated combats to test builds.

Has Rikozou mentioned that kinda thing at all in other supplements or Roll&Roll articles or anything?
>>
>>53804374
Well, i didn't do anything about godhunters because the main book actually does have guidelines for that. Its in the NPC creation part.

I've got a question about the Darkhunter Shadow freerun talent. It says if you spend a prep to perform a combat move you don't spend that prep. So does that mean you can zip around infinitely?

It reads like this:

Passive Effect.
The target gains a +2 modifier to {Initiative}. Also,
when the target makes a [Combat Move] with
[Timing: Prep], it does not spend their [Prep].

See what I mean?
>>
>>53807731
You can only ever make one Move Action during a turn, no matter what Timing you spend (or don't spend) to do it with. So for example you couldn't make a Simple Move and then also a Combat Move. Likewise here you can't just Combat Move forever.

However it's notable for example that Shadow Breach DOES NOT count as a Move Action. Therefore, you could Combat Move, then Shadow Breach for a double move.
>>
>>53807486

I'm a patient man. Thank you again.
>>
Question about various Talents: take something like Time Wizard's Chronos Traitor, which has a range of 7 sq. and a target of 1#. Can you target yourself with it? It's not totally clear, and it'd be pretty nice to know for sure.
>>
>>53810117
Unless it specifies otherwise, yeah. There's no reason you wouldn't be able to.

Rather, Those are meant to be buffing talents for your party, and you are part of that party.
>>
>>53810117
Confirming what >>53810257 says. You may totally target yourself with those types of abilities unless they specifically say you cannot (and there are some of those I think, like... maybe Dragon Lord has one, I want to say? And that's a specific example of specific exclusion).
>>
>>53810316
For that matter, you could use attack talents to the same effect if you wanted to.

But that'd make you a dick.
>>
>>53810316

That seems really weird. Because almost all of those talents have descriptions that heavily imply that they are effects used on other people.
>>
>>53811550
If you've played DnD, think of it like any of the stat boosting spells the myriad of classes get.

Sure, you CAN cast them on anyone in X range, but there's no reason not to use it on yourself either.
>>

To be fair, armor in this game includes particularly well-made school uniforms.
>>
>>53812040

I'd honestly like to ask Kamigakari Anon to insert a big boldface IF YOU DO NOT WEAR A SUIT YOU TAKE DOUBLE DAMAGE right before the equipment list's start. Cause sure, it's not there in the original, but who the fuck would look closely enough to figure this out otherwise? That kind of important information shouldn't be hidden like that.

It is pretty obscure though.

Yeah, that's where I found it, but I only did because I was trying to squeeze every last possible G out of my purchases by sheer accident. Considering none of the other headers have important information it feels...wrong to have such an important bit of trivia only there - particularly because a lot of characters don't want too much armor due to running with Evasion, in particular.
>>
>>53812109

Shit, put it in the section on damage if there is one (haven't read the book yet, but am interested because of these threads) AND again in the equipment section.

thanks to an anon making a suggestion for a touhou themed campaign in another thread, i'm gonna do a couple characters for touhou.

Alice margatroid, because she's easily the hardest person to make due to needing a lot of personalized skills

And yuuka kazami. Because she's terrifying and would make an excellent boss mononoke.

So if that interests you at all, please wait warmly.

>>
>>53812547
Okay, now that i think on it, i'ma take a poll for alice's style of play.

The first option is to have Alice use the attacks fluffed as the dolls. This would resemble her hisoutensoku moveset more than anything. This would include more direct attacks, but less mononoke summoned.

The other option would be to create a style in which she summons A certain amount of dolls per round as actual units, each with specialized abilities. Shanghai's would attack with swords and spears, Hourai's would Use a dash guard type skill to defend alice, And some would self-destruct on engagement with players.

Which version of alice would you rather see as a mononoke?

Katana.
2H or hand and a half?
>>
>>53819950
Depends on what you think would be cooler, honestly. Either could fit. Even a one hand could fit. Personally I like the two-handed giant ass katana approach.

Unrelated, it's funny what you notice when you go back through this stuff. Like how the "bad footing" penalty is actually -2, not -4 as the PDF says it is. Whoooops.
>>
>>53819950
Historically speaking, katana's came in all sizes, and many shapes.

Anywhere from straight spine to really curved, Grooved or not. Kodachi's, Wakizashi's, Tachi's, Odachi's, Even the Zanbato.

The term Katana is just a catch-all for Japanese swords. So really, anything from 1-hand to 2-hand is easily accurate.

Basically, Alice summons several Puppets To do her bidding. Shanghai's are fewer, but attack, while hourai's are higher in number, but can only defend. In a minute, i'll do a mock up for goliath doll, who will also have some special mechanics besides the already mentioned ones in alices post. Note that alice has a distinct weakness to area, multitarget, and combat zone effects, and plan accordingly.

>«Magic Overload» Constant/ User/ User
>- When Target Reaches Below 175 Health, Gain +1 to all Active Checks

You'll notice Goliath seems to have a couple extra talents and an inordinate amount of health. Thats because since Goliath can only be summoned by alice as a boss unit, i built-in the modifiers and talents that would otherwise be there normally. These include weaker versions of Defy Common Sense and Fearsome Power. It is not recommended to increase the power of this unit any further, especially considering its ludicrously high base damage and Accuracy value.

I Would also go so far as to say you shouldn't Use aramitama or boss templates on alice, due to the nature of how she works. Summoning goliath is tantamount to a hard reset for her, and can easily TPK a party if you aren't careful. Alice is best left as a regular mononoke who can summon goliath as a boss as needed.
>>
Do damage rolls count as Active Checks? Wondering if the Regalia Sheath's bonus applies to them or not.
>>
>>53827458
If you mean for mononoke, Its basically a +1 to their Fixed value for ACC and CON, because those are active checks, even if the value itself is fixed.
>>
>>53827490
For godhunters, you don't actually even roll for damage per se.

You make the accuracy or conjure check, which is an active check, and the higher of the two numbers decides how much X rank does for damage calculation. So RankXHighest accuracy die is your rank damage, Plus your PD for total damage.

But long story short, any check where you are the initiator or aggressor is an active check. Any situation where you are defending or reacting are reactive checks.

>>53860186
pbp?
>>
>>53860240
Play by post gaming, just don't have time for setting up a weekly one.
>>
>>53860664
Oh. I don't have any experience in play by post, so i can't much help with that part.

However, there are a few things i would suggest. First, get really in touch with the rules. Make sure you understand them as thoroughly as possible, so your players don't end up breaking your mononoke like twigs.

Second, remember rule of cool wins the day. In a situation where a character wants to do something awesome, let them. So long as they can justify it with their abilities, give them the floor and let them describe the wacky zany retarded powerlevel ways they hit your bosses, or how they react to tanking hits. Whenever possible, avoid outright saying no to something unless they have no mechanical way of doing it. For example, an arc slayer A/B trying to heal without using an item.
>>
>>53860863
I will try to keep that in mind. Thanks.
>>
>>53863614
Of the rules, The spirit pool and influence system are of particular importance.

Remember that when your players influence, they cannot influence every dice. One of them needs to retain its original value. You also Cannot influence into a crit.

Other than this, the arms system is also particularly important. Players can have as many of the weapon upgrades as they wish, so long as they have the money or materials for it. However, material synthesis can only be done up to a certain amount of times. accessories once, twice for 1 hand, hand and a half, and protectors, and 2-hand weapons up to 4. This is a hard limit that disregards potency.

In summation, make sure you don't accidentally let your players do more than they should, and remember if they are getting overly strong you can throttle this through what items drop. Fools gold does not drop from enemies in kamigakari, so their entire economy is dependent on item drops and the potential Kushimitama they can trade for 3000 if they don't use it to recover crest or make a context sensitive miracle happen.

Even a complete idiot can be powerful with the right equipment.
>>
Tried to find a tonfa for one of my players, couldn't find one. Guess I'll have to refluff a weapon into one.
>>
>>53864552
Well, the way to do that would be to either make them 1-handed Hammer type weapons, or make them like arm guards and such.

I was surprised that there was no tonfa in the expansions though. There's a possibility its in the 7th book which has shit tons of items, but Kamigakari anon is a ways off from doing that.
>>
>>53864611
The arm guards idea only works if the guy plans to use two of them.

There's benefits to using either one though. For 2 one handers, you can take ambidexterity and their additional effects stack with eachother, which can be really good. On the other hand, one two hander can get to the later effects more quickly because they are spending less on weapons overall. 2-handers also tend to hit slightly harder.

Either way, if the guy doesn't plan to be a hibari kyouya rip-off, then just make it a 1-handed hammer as the above would be moot in that case.
>>
I have a question! Is there any measure of how much money characters are expected to have at certain levels? Anything comparable to a Wealth-By-Level chart in Kamigakari?
>>
>>53864552
Energy Tonfa
Restrict: Martial
Mode: One Hand
ACC: +1
PD: +5
INIT: -2
Cost: 1,300G
[Form: Hammer / Range: Engaged / Target: 1#]. An Artificial Regalia in the form of a tonfa meant to be matched. It is specialized in defense. While [Equipped], once per combat, reduce [Physical Damage] taken by 5.

Found in the first False God's Greed replay. Found some others in Embers, but they're pricey (4,100G and 8,000G).

>>53864719
I can't access my PDF right this second but there's rules explained in the... original character creation section, I think? I want to say you get 1,500G per level above 1 you go. So a level 2 character would have 6,500G for example. I might be wrong, so do check the PDF.
>>
>>53864735
Youd be correct
>>
>>53867262
To expound on this because i wasn't at my computer, kamigakari anon was correct about the money per level.

However, a character created at level 5 will almost invariably be poorer than one that worked up to it. You get more money on average per level from fighting and getting materials and kushimitama than you would by making a character at level 5. Total you would have 11000.

Question about the Tactical Holster Accessory: Since guns have a fixed PD modifier, does the Tactical Holster replace that fixed PD modifier with your own PD or add to the fixed modifier?

If i remember right it allows you to add your pd mod to the gun.

Also stat her

Legion A/Godhand B.

as for new stuff, most of the player side stuff has stayed the same for a while. Whats been most recently translated was the GM stuff for requiem.

You could look at the extra style talents Kamigakari anon put up in the fourth or fifth book though.

What sort of anime/manga could I recreate with this system?
>>
>>53896896
Almost any shounen battle BS is fair game.

Kill la kill, Bleach, naruto, one piece, DBZ.

You could also do pretty well with some mystery horror type thing like higurashi or something.

Basically, this system excels in most situations where there is some sort of enemy to fight or investigate.
>>
>>53886460
So if I had a pistol that did 5 PD, and my character has a PD of 7, it'd be 5+7?

All a tactical holster does is allow guns to do that.

This is the first time i've really looked at this pic, but that is a dumb as fuck sake cup.
>>
So I'm curious - do you guys feel like there's anything missing from Kamigakari, if you've played it already? For me really the only thing I kinda wish existed are 'Simple Powers' a la Double Cross that you can get cheaply and give you new things to do out of combat. The combat system is tight, but the rest is a little bit too freeform compared to it. What do you think?
>>
>>53902572
Well, there are maneuvers that can be used out of battle, and nothing says the combat feats can't be used. That said, the game is very much so built towards combat. Roleplay is mostly supposed to be freeform, to facilitate speed of game. Manuevers cover most of what you would do, and outright stat checks can cover most of the rest

Look over the maneuvers, see if there's anything missing in your opinion. Maybe i can help you work something out from there.
>>
>>53902631

Nah, the maneuvers are fine. What's missing is neat applications derived from supernatural powers. Like, for example...a Digital Sorcerer making a rudimentary AI to carry out tasks for him on the side. Not really something you do with a maneuver but has a clear plot impact. Stuff like that.
>>
>>53902778
Well, what if it was a Digital sorceror A/Contractor B that specialized in such things?

I could easily make a mononoke for you to do that job, if you give me a more clear definition of what it should be able to do.
>>
>>53902845

The point is that that's something a Digital Sorcerer should be able to do because they're a digital sorcerer, not because they specced the summoner class - it's not something that'd provide a combat bonus, just out of combat utility. If you want another example, a Dark Hunter detaching their shadow to impersonate them for a while so they can be in two places at once without anyone noticing they left the place they were supposed to be at. Being able to do those things without worrying that the GM might think it's 'too much' would be pretty nice.
>>
>>53902952
This is the reason all characters start with two style's though.

In digital summoners case you say that, but rather, they are specialized in "Hacking reality". Not necessarily summoning an option. Their specialty is actually much closer to a bard than it would be to summoning a familiar.

In Dark hunters case, that is an extremely specialized skill that dips into the abilities of a contractor.

This is the reason there are "Main styles" and "Sub Styles". The main style determines your particular forte. The sub-style is either a back up or accentuates something in the main style, such as summoning an option or your shadow as a doppelganger.

Another example is having an Arcslayer A main, but wanting more speed or movement. In that scenario, you would go Dark hunter or Time wizard.

Also, these same things can be used out of combat, should the situation call for it. For example, you can summon your contracted mononoke, and it can do and interact with things on its own should you so wish.
>>
>>53903045

...Yes, but my dude, having a shadow double is *literally a combat option for Dark Hunter A*. Why would you need a whole style just to duplicate the functionality of one talent of your main style? Why shouldn't you be able to take whatever else is more important to your fighting style, which is what styles are about at the end of the day?
>>
>>53903062
Have you ever played megaman x5? Perhaps Touhou hisoutensoku?

In both games there are abilities that make a "Double" per say. In one, the clone moves ahead a split second, in the other behind. This is the extent of that double, and thats how its intended for dark hunter.

In megaman x5 this is a clone that moves slightly ahead of zero, copying his movements. In Touhou hisoutensoku, this is tantamount to the same thing, but in reverse. In other words, konpaku youmu uses her double to attack after herself, closing the timing loopholes in her skillset for a short period.

Its not intended as an outright full on double or its mechanical impact would work like a temporary version of a contractor summon. Which is why you would need to take contractor to make an outright double.

A style doesn't include every single possible potential ability any class' theme would cover, because many of them would fall under other style's better. Which is why people can mix and match style's as they please.
>>
>>53903135

Which is why the response always comes down to 'use contractor B' for utility, I am sure (spoilers it's because 'I have an entire creature that can be my friend' is a swiss army knife that does everything you might want). What would you consider actual utility power uses for each of the core book's styles instead? Try it. It'll illustrate the point for why I consider the lack of such powers a shame.
>>
>>53903223
That depends entirely on what you consider utility. Which seems to be the issue.

Digital sorceror, Divine talker, Elemental adept, Elder mage B, even Dark hunter can be utility depending on how you use it.

So before defining what each class can't do, start by defining utility.
>>
>>53903281
Oh and time mage. Can't forget time mage.
>>
>>53903281
One thing i will mention outright is that while contractor does tend to give direct mechanical influence, inside or outside of battle, many abilities can be used outside of battle, based on how they work in battle.

For example, a dark hunters movement based skills can help you to hoof it on foot, and others to sneak around and gather information.

An elemental adept with cold damage, as an example, could freeze over a stream real quick to make a path, quickly cool a drink, quickly cool down a sweltering room, all on basis of the fact that they can control cold. An elemental adept with fire could do the opposite for much the same reasons, and ones with shock could jump start a car, charge a phone, or whatever.

Time wizard A can help people with a variety of things that are time sensitive, such as delivering things, studying, producing something, again, on basis of the fact that they can speed up time for them and their allies. B could alternatively be used to stall progress, if need be.

Elder mage has skills that can be used to help people as needed, and some with effects that only work outside of combat, like support spell and spell strengthening.

Digital sorcerer B has skill device, which explicitly gives a good boost to three different maneuvers, which is wholly out of combat utility.

Most of what you can consider "Utility" is not hard encoded in the rules because it can be derived from the many abilities spread around the style's.
>>

>>
>>53903769

Yes, but deriving it with no rules is a pain in the ass because it leads to GM-may-I situations. For example, could an Arc Slayer uses Secrets of the Destroyer to kill somebody's cancer without killing them? If so, how much should that help them? That kind of thing could use at least some decent guidelines.
>>
>>53911089
A good guideline is common sense. Most of the examples i made above are well within the realm of possibility.

Precisely aiming at cancer with a technique designed to fuck shit up is a bit outside the realm of possibility though. Chop down a tree or bust down a wall maybe, but even if you cut out the cancer the guy now has a gaping wound. Congratulations you made things worse.

No matter what system you play, the gm has the final say anyways, so i'm not sure what the issue is
>>
>>53909736
A good start would be what the terms mean.
>>
>>53912982

Does he? Shiki Tohno or Shiki Ryogi would probably be Arc Slayers, and that's something they could do.

(See what I mean about GM-May-I now? These kinds of divergences are BIG, and a problem.)
>>
>>53913869
Not the guy you're arguing with, but they do have the Mystic Eyes of outright erasing concepts by cutting through a line or stabbing a certain point. I'm sure you could do that shit as a high level Demon-Eyed character.
>>
>>53913738
Good idea. there's a few things that could use clarification.

>>53913869
Well, like >>53914839 said, both of them have extremely special specific abilities that literally let them kill someone which are actually in the Race for Demon Eyed. So potentially, a demon eyed character could do that.

Also, Ryougi is like, part god or some shit. hard to match up to that.

At its core though, Arc slayer is "I am good with a weapon". It doesn't include anything about healing or cutting out cancer or anything like that. Thats the kind of thing you SHOULD have to ask your GM for.

Its also, once again, why you can have up to 5 style's if you so wish.
>>
>>53915059
Though I am not Rikizou, in my interpretation, the more interesting read of Arc Slayer isn't that they're simply "good with weapons" but that they possess knowledge. Knowledge of every fighting style, every way to kill someone, and every single bit of anatomy in everything that has ever lived or existed.

In short they "know" how to kill things, and "know" how to be good with weapons, because their Shards give them that knowledge.
>>
>>53915139
Yeah, but would that allow them to cut out cancer without leaving a mark?

I sincerely doubt that.
>>
>>53915169
Oh, probably not. I'd leave that for Demon Eyed like was mentioned. I was just sort of distractedly mumbling about Arc Slayer while pressing my face against the Rules Section.
>>
>>53915234
Indeed.

This is why i was saying that there are limits to what any style is capable of, at least alone. Because otherwise some style's would become outright obsolete for one reason or another.
>>
>>53915139

Out of curiosity, what is the Legion's gimmick then? Because that description honestly reads more like what I'd think the Legion is about, considering their 'ranged specialists' thing is...overblown at best, honestly.
>>
>>53916537
Legion to me was not really about "ranged attacks" per se, even if they're heavily fluffed towards guns and bombs. It was always more about knowing how to win the war. Tactical awareness, strategy, planning, and execution.

To put it in simplest terms, Arc Slayer is an assassin or duelist. They know how to kill someone in any situation, but that's more of a one-on-one thing. Legion is the soldier. They know how to dismantle someone's security networks, plan for contingencies, and have backup plans if the target gets away.

That's just my take on it, anyway!
>>
>>53916788
That sounds about right.

Also, since there was talk about non-combat uses for classes...I was thinking about some for Legion.

Since they're fluffed towards guns and tactics, I wouldn't call it a stretch to say that they can perceive minute movements and details, although they can only see the normal spectrum of sight unless they're Demon Eyed.

So, they can potentially notice stuff faster. It can also help with their cover: a Legion user might be a student in an archery club, a photographer, or an artist.

As for the more tactically-minded: you can either stalk a target or lose a tail because you've studied the area in detail and know which alley to duck into, which doors lead to where, and so on.

And if you're into the bombing and cover-blowing: you could probably be a McGuyver and make some quick smoke grenades, improvise another way to breach a wall, and so on.
>>
>>53917699
The flavor text for Legion even says they have advanced kinetic vision, so that make sense to me!
>>
>>53917804
Hmm, trying to think up of non-combat uses for classes and possible covers in normal life here, so that there's examples of what to do when the group isn't in combat.
>>
I have a question! Is there a third dimension to consider on combat maps? Can someone with [Shift: Flight] fly vertically and used ranged weapons from above? Or is the "can ignore engagment attempts" while [Shift: Flight] is active supposed to represent the vertical movement aspect entirely in combat?
>>
>>53918765
There are no elevation rules in Kamigakari. So yeah, basically the "can ignore engagement attempts" is the whole of it.
>>

>>53918765
This is actually a good question.

If kamigakari anon doesn't weigh in on it, i'd say both are possible. It'd be a GM call at that point
>>
>>53918887
Ironically, he weighed in before my post updated the thread for me.
>>
>>53918875
wait, doesn't climbing and falling damage count as elevation?

There's no hard rules, but a 3d grid could be figured out around the same way a regular one is. And movement with flight can be assumed with the same rules as figuring out regular movement.

Its not terribly difficult, if you want to use that kinda thing.
>>
>>53920943
That's not to say elevation doesn't exist, I'm just saying that a third dimension in terms of in combat flight has no rules and is just handled via "can ignore engagement declares."

I suspect allowing for elevation would actually break some things, also, because ranged/magical weapons are likely to have a lot more range than Charge X attacks, and those are meant to be able to knock fliers out of the air (hence why there's a glut of "change your range to Charge 1 Sq." items in Damocles and the like). Also the rules for Flight state that if you take Fallen while flying you take 20 falling damage, which means you're generally hovering 20 meters in the air.
>>
>>53921066
Thats pretty high. Then again, thats measured specifically out of combat, where-as an in combat grid can be a meter or a kilometer if you need it to.

I guess its not impossible, but it would certainly need some work and consideration.
>>
So a quick question/thought, would a Henshin Hero be a Contractor A/(Godhand/Arc Slayer)? Or is there a better combination that gives both the bike and hand to hand/weapon options? I am talking about the average Kamen Rider of course.
>>
>>53921242
Straight up Dragon carrier A or B, and Contractor A.

My character was a Dragon carrier B/Arc Slayer A, no problems whatsoever with punching people to death.

Just make sure to get arm guards. Whats your race?
>>
>>53921278
Haven't decided yet. I'm still pondering things, I just thought i'd get an idea. I'm assuming a 'Mecha Class Magical Girl Nanoha" would be something with Digital Sorcery?
>>
>>53921593
I think Dragon Carrier A does the magical girl thing decently.
>>
>>53921593
Dragon carrier handles basically any variation of transformation, mode change, form change, whatever. Your kamen transformations, magical girl outfit changes, kaiokens, Frieza forms, etc.

What the other class would be depends entirely on the skillset of the person involved. For example, nanoha herself is outright elder mage A, where as fate would be Arc Slayer A or B.

No one character in any one series is perfectly the same as another, and that shows in what style's you would pick. Basically, figure out what you want to do as that kind of character, and work backward from that.
>>
>>53921648
I really appreciate your input on this. Not trying to be lazy, just trying to figure things out based on some of my favorite character types, I guess. Definitely gives me some thoughts to work with, and I really just need to sit down and read at this point.
>>
>>53921700
Yep, I know how that feels. For me, I know that my younger brother likes playing characters that go up close and punch, so I decided to go for Legion A/B so that I can do well at range while giving movement and cover buffs for him to get close.
>>
>>53921700
No problem man. Its basically what i'm here for.

If you have any questions or just want an opinion on something, i will be there.

>>53921788
I wish our group had that level of consideration. Everyone else made characters completely by themselves, so we ended up with group A with three physical based people and group B with 5 range and magic based people.

Ironically, Group A performed better by a small bit.
>>
I have a question! When you're using the Ambidexterity talent to wield two one-handed weapons, do you simply add their various stats (PD, Init penalties, etc) together as if they were one weapon?
>>
>>53921842
Yeah, it's nice when you consider the classes.

So, I have my youngest brother who wants to have some sort of power armor. Reading through Legacy User and Godforged Regalia, I'm guessing that at character creation, they get one for free?
>>
>>53921882
That depends on entirely what kind of weapon.

If its melee, ranged, or magical in BOTH hands, then yes. They do stack, including +X additional effects.

If they are different types in each hand, for example one melee and one ranged, then no. They do not stack, except for the initiative stat.
>>
>>53921889
Nope, you buy them the same way you would regular items, due to balancing issues otherwise.. there's a rule section for how godforged regalia work at the bottom of True Regalia of chronos. Table of contents letters are XXXJ
>>
>>53921982
Oh, I see the cost now. Huh, okay. Bit pricey at 2k for a starting character.
>>
>>53922011
These are stupendously strong weapons with a unique system unto themselves. They need to be a bit pricey, or everyone would just take legacy user.
>>
>>53922025
Fun times:
- Contractor A / Legacy User A
- Mounted Combat or Dragoon
- Reaper of the Battlefield
- Matched Pair

Get the vehicle Godforged and your choice of switch hand Godforged (I favor the 'Godbinding Chains' which I haven't translated yet but are pretty darn fun).

It's costly Talents-wise, but goodness your PD.
>>
>>53922025
Yeah, that's true.

On an unrelated note, didn't figure out that God Hand As have a talent that lets them use any weapon as though it were unarmed until now, though I don't get what its second effect does.

Also, another question: for skills that increase modifiers like, say, "the target gains a +2 modifier to the result of {Strength} and {Agility} checks", the modifier does not apply to a character's stats, but to an actual checking using said stats?
>>
>>53922169
That would be correct. You do not get an outright boost to your stats, only to checks made using just the stat.

It also does not affect derived stats like accuracy or PD.
>>
>>53922253
Okay.

Still trying to figure out what this means: "Also, they may change each [Style: God Hand / Type: A / Timing: Attack] Style Talent's [Range] to be [Item]."

It's God Hand A's Extension of Self Talent. And I'm guessing it'd work with >>53864735.
>>
>>53922154
I'm curious, are there any more Godforged, or are the ones in Expansion 3 it?
>>
>>53922330
That half of the Extension of Self talent means you can use, say, guns. Because it lets you use the Item's range, not the Talent's.

The Talent would definitely work with the tonfa, though you don't actually need it, since it counts as Unarmed, so you're good to go already. It's only if you want to use a sword or gun or something.

>>53922522
There might be in R&R Magazine supplements, I'd have to really go through and check the descriptions of the back orders. But no, so far as I know, only the ones in Chronos exist.

Mind you, I haven't finished translating them all yet because they're kind of boring and laborous to do. If you have something you're curious about though, let me know. There's one for every single type of Form, plus Mode (so three Swords, one one-handed, one switch hand, one two-handed, and three Hammers, one one-handed, etc.)
>>
>>53922622
Huh, okay. Asked that because you mentioned an Automobile Regalia that I couldn't find anywhere on what you have translated so far. Anything for Ranged weapons?

Also, brother's asking what class would best represent a spirit inside a weapon, like Fi from Skyward Sword or that girl from the new Xeboblade Chronicles game. Or is that some fluff he could make up?
>>
A question about the A/B style splits: does taking two of the same letters from different styles mess with a character's overall ability to defend themselves or contribute in combat?
>>
>>53922662
Did I not upload it? Dang. I'll do that in a few minutes, then. I'm positive I have translated it, but am slipping on making updates.

I'd say that's fluff, but I'd probably go with Legacy User A. The Common Godforged powers allow a lot of wiggle room to imagine there being a spirit living in their weapon. In fact one of the players in one of my games is doing exactly this. They're Legacy User A / Elemental Adept B, and their sword has an ancient ice spirit inside of it named Himezuru.

>>53922668
It does make you less defensive, but Kamigakari is built more on evasion than actual defense. So long as the character has a decent Agility or Will, they should get along OK. They also have access to a self-revive through Spirit Burn, and can supplement healing with consumables. They'll be just fine, too, in terms of contributing.
>>
>>53922668
Taking a look at it, going full A would mean that you would have to rely on attacking fast and hard, but there are some styles that help you get out of the way.

With full B, you are playing more support than usual, but B types also have a lot more counter-attacking talents that can be used after attack and some can shut down enemy attacks.
>>
>>53922154

On the subject of weapons, can you tell is about those Godbinding Chains? Any weapons we haven't seen that are specialized for restraining, depowering and non-lethal capture?
>>
>>53922662
Here we go, there's probably a few other new things besides (probably the accessories?) so take a look! https://pastebin.com/zDp9GnWD

>>53922945
I went ahead and translated the Godbinding Chains, they're in the link above. However as to your question, I really doubt we'll see anything like that. If it's not an effect you already see in the pastebin stuff, it's unlikely there'll be anything super new in any of the Godforged stuff. Kami doesn't really do non-lethal capture, and I'm not sure how they'd represent retraining outside of inflicting Shifts, which honestly even the Talents are kind of hesitant to do, so I wouldn't expect to see them on weapons.

As for depowering, there are at least 'reduce damage' stuff, but well... yeah.
>>
I have a question! Is there a max damage rank a single attack can attain?
>>
>>53923738
Rank 10 is the highest you can go. So this means the most you'll ever get from your dice is 60 points of damage (100 if you crit!)
>>
>>53923778
Thank you! And thanks for answering all of my other questions too (even the dumb ones). It's been a real help being able to ask you directly.
>>
So, a question to the thread in general. Am I going crazy or is Continuous Action wayyyyyyy superior to every other High talent (except maybe Counterstrike)? You could maaaaaayyyyybe make a case for Accuracy Boost or Conjure Boost, but being able to make more attacks (or more heals) is so good that it probably puts them to shame in practice. Even higher level High Talents seem like they'd get outdone by it - what's the point of doing 15 more damage with one attack when you can swing another time for 40+? Do Armor/Barrier ratings climb so high that a single powerful hit beats doing more stuff?
>>
>>53924009
Not a problem! I enjoy talking about the game, and helping people understand and enjoy it is cool too.

>>53924396
Some on this thread would tell you it is flat out superior and you shouldn't take anything but Continuous Action. I wouldn't say you should not, but also consider that the Accuracy Boost style of Talents don't just give you higher Accuracy (or whatever), but also help with non-combat rolls (Strength in Accuracy Boost's case), and allow you to Influence more per roll (you can Influence 2 dice instead of just 1 per roll).

As for why not +15 damage over +1 Attack, it depends on the type of build you have. You're still drawing from the same Spirit pool, so do you have the Spirit it takes to fuel that many Talent attacks? You can make weapon attacks, but they won't be enhanced any. Moreover, you can't move in between attacks, so what if you kill something and then are out of range to attack anything else? You waste your extra actions. You may also be a defensive build and rely more on counter attacks than actual attacks, in which case you would want the extra damage rather than the extra attacks.

This all might read to you as "still not better than 1 more attack" and well, you might be right! It's all up to you, really. I'm just pointing out other things to think about.

So, reading through character creation again, and I'm not seeing a point where it says to pick up two styles at the beginning. Is there something I'm missing? Everything I see seems to point to taking only one.

Oh right, for Godforged, is there one that counts as Unarmed? Or is that simply a Hammer-type weapon?
>>
>>53929126
Technically speaking, that would be godhand
>>
>>53922722
Huh, so combat works more like Double Cross, then? So as a corollary, are direct defense/tank powers as useless in Kamigakari than in DX? Since there's the auto-revive and Spirt Burn seems like a less random Enchroachment, it seems like combat would devolve into the same sort of rocket launcher tag that plagues DX.
>>
>>53931260
I wouldn't say tanking is outright useless, it just requires a lot of investment. My Kamen rider carrier has tanked some good hits, what with his 20 Some Armor and 15 some barrier, which is on a per hit basis. Then if you have any talents that halve damage, those apply after that.
>>
>>53931260

No, DX is broken mechanicswise because Resurrect is infinite until 100 ER. You can only auto-revive once so Kamigakari is more balanced and there's like, actual value to investing in dodgemore/tankmore as opposed to pure killmore.
>>
>>53932068
Well, you don't die so long as you are in a spirit barrier. Worst is taken out.

You can however die if you are attacked outside of one.
>>
>>53932149
Wonder how that would happen.
>>
>>53932374
Sneak attack. Assassination. DM fiat. Plenty of ways. If the enemy takes out the party he could take you outside of the spirit barrier and kill you one by one.

Weapons that count as unarmed are always hammer. Unless they're axes... uh. Anyway, there is a Godforged that counts as unarmed, it's a hammer. In fact I went ahead and translated it, as well as the gun. Enjoy!

Did the gods have guns?

Apparently they did!

>>53936363
Actually, you know what. If i remember right, there was actually some thing by type moon where a kiritsugu lookalike had a badass gun that was effective against the Various Types. I'd bet its that, from the description.

Okay, i've started a general FAQ pastebin, and i'm working on the general questions at the moment.

Things like what is kamigakari, what does it do, etc etc.

If you can think of any questions and answers that should be put in this section, i would greatly appreciate the help.
>>
>>53932149

It's irrelevant. Here 'die' means 'get mission-killed'. If you get KO'd you're dead as far as the rest of your team is concerned unless they have revivals. The point is in that DX you can potentially revive yourself like 50 times if you're lucky with your ER rolls, so the optimal strat is to say 'fuck defense' and focus on doing abusive amounts of damage for minimal encroachment, because your ER basically is your lifebar instead of your HP. In Kamigakari you have one full life and then one life with piddly HP, so playing like you have 99 Phoenix Downs in your back pocket is not wise (and using the actual phoenix down items costs actions, which is a not-insignificant price to pay, too, so that's not a great option to spam). Basically the system isn't inherently broken like DX's is.
>>
>>53937806
yeah, that is most certainly not a thing in Kamigakari. At least not yet.

Basically, when you first get slapped down to zero, you get [Shift:Downed]. In the core book, there are only 3 ways to remove this. One burns a lot of spirit crest and doesn't give you a great deal of health. The other two are items. Frankly, the party will almost never have the money to waste on that many restoratives, especially not at 200-500G each, when gold can easily be throttled by the GM at his leisure.

If you take a coup de grace to the back of the head when downed though, you get [Shift:Taken Out]. In the core book, there are no items or abilities whatsoever to get rid of this, and you are out for the count for the rest of combat.

I meant like, generally what is kamigakari type stuff.

I will put those in the terms section though. Thanks for the input.

Nah, you actually helped me think of a ton of stuff to put into the FAQ. Thanks for the help man.

Speaking of, here's the first draft. More will be added as i'm asked more questions.

By chance, has anyone thought to do a cheat sheet? Things look solid, and I know KA is doing his best, but goddamn these mechanics are hard to read through.
>>
>>53940637
Doing an FAQ right now friend. Its literally linked right above your post.

If thats not what you mean by a cheatsheet though, elaborate and i'll see what i can do.
>>
>>53940843

A cheat sheet is a list of all relevant calculations and what goes into them. For example, all the PD/HP/MD/etc. formulas, plus a listing of when you gain special talents (such as Quickening/Style Growth/Style Ultimate), and so on and so forth. That's not part of the FAQ, no.
>>
>>53940843
It's pretty close. More so just like, a short document that literally just lists the need to know mechanics that someone could print and just have right there. DM Screen sorta stuff.
>>
>>53940925
Well, the FAQ is a work in progress, but i can see what you mean.

I can put something together real quick, yeah. Gimme a bit, and i'll see what i can do.
>>
>>53940940
Aside from what >>53940925 mentions, what other things would you like to see on the cheatsheet?

For example, a quick one or two lines about mechanics like engagements? what people can do after specific move actions?
>>
>>53941068
Like, in order I'd like to see
Simplified "Targeting Rules" (What each target type is, range rules, that sort of thing)
Defenses
Damage calculation/fast way to do it
How each shift can affect a character
Any other quick reference rules that are good to know of.

I think it's kind of simple, but when looking at talents makes you cross reference like, 2-3 chapters and at least 3 pages between them....
>>
>>53941374
so you just want the most used stuff in a concise manner. I think i can do that.
>>
>>53941418
yup. Sorry if I wasn't clear earlier. The FAQ is still a great idea, and if I can think of anything that fits well in it, I'll definitely throw it at you. I just know that I have friends who might enjoy this, but the layout and formatting of the book may throw them off (Again, I know KA is doing the best he can. I know formatting has tossed my friends off multiple systems though.)
>>
>>53941571
Genuine question: What do you mean by formatting/layout throwing your friends off? How does it do that? Or can, I guess.
>>
>>53941571
Okay, try this on for size

https://pastebin.com/0JxzJf6s

I tried to get most of the more relevant rules in, and due to [shift:hidden] being so long i gave it its own section, but overall i think this covers regular combat.
>>
>>53941632
Not him, but a bunch of stuff in the book could use a good bit of reordering, or at least a secondary explanation. For example, the character creation section talks about a ton of terms that don't make any sense without the context you don't get for like 4-5 chapters. For example, shifts, the spirit pool, engagements, install, etc. Even if the original book was that way, I think it might benefit heavily from either a brief explanation or some sort of extra context in the abilities section.
>>
>>53941843
Well, i need to lay down for now.

For the anon that wanted it, look through see if thats what you wanted. Post a reply, and even if the thread 404's in the meantime i'll still see it somehow.
