There is a reason why NASA developed ballpoint pens instead of using pencils. They didn't want pencil shavings/snapped bits of graphite floating around in zero g.
>>53756873
I thought they didn't want pieces of wood and carbon floating around in a high O2 sealed environment?
>>53756701
To be fair, NASA contracted a company to design a zero-g capable Ball point pen.
And the Russians quickly discovered that pencils were dangerous to use in space (iirc the graphite shavings could cause fires from static electricity and clogged air filters)
But that's a lot of text. Probably why they chose something less accurate, but much more succinct.

After a quick Google search, it turns out both NASA and the USSR used graphite pencils. And NASA didn't have to invest anything to get the new space pens. Fischer designed them on their own, and sold them for significantly less than what the pencils were bought at (~$2.50 per pen vs. ~$128.00 per pencil [this is what caused them to look for a replacement in the first place, that and the fact that wooden pencils are flammable] )
