Awesome. Just dudes and BMDs? Did you you make up a formation diagram for them?
>>

I'm using the BMDs as BMP 1s and 2s and just running them currently as vanilla mech, but we'll see what comes with Red Bear.

The current support will be a battery of Nonas and some Hinds and SU-25s, so everything will be either airlanded or aircraft.

Yes it is. I hated everything after painting these fuckers. I still do, but at least now I have pretty models to hate it with.

...Though I have 100 more to paint before they're ALL done (this 152 was just the core), and ideally I'd have those done in time for a gaming meetup with an old college friend at the start of next month. I fear I may attempt to challenge myself again. Second wave would be another airlanding platoon, spare infantrymen, 2 more 3" mortars, 4 more 6pdrs, and whatever of my airborne recce I can get assembled and ready to paint by then.
>>
>>53753070
I'm just painting regular British rifles right now. But getting each individual Enfield/Sten/Bren painted is my new personal hell.
>>
>>53753332
My hell was the socks. I'd get a full platoon painted, be ready to move on to the next one... And realize I didn't paint ANY of the socks. For all 28-36 guys in the painting batch.
>>
>>53753332
Are you painting them in batches by color? Once I get to detailing I usually do all the skin and wood in beige brown, then use a dark flesh on the skin followed by all the gunmetal parts.
>>
>>53753756
Painting uniform, flesh, brown for rifles, gunmetal for bren/stens, green on helmets and vickers/PIATs. Have black and brown washes but haven't decided which to use. I'll never finish either way.
>>
>>53753819
I use a brown wash on my infantry. You can do it. Break your guys up into smaller groups if you feel fatigued. You'll feel accomplished once you start to see guys 100% done

How long until eastern front for v4?
>>
>>53751598

What's wrong with painting 15mm infantry? They're my favourite scale and model type to paint. Much quicker and easier than the 15mm Cavalry and 40k stuff I'm also working on.
>>
>>53758456
Well, I got that wrong, thought they were socks but they're something I didn't even know was a thing.
>>
>>53760496
It probably helps that I don't have a single decent brush.
>>
So, since I am likely meeting up with some friends on the 1st-4th of July, I need to get some modeling and painting done beforehand. Currently, that means the following:
>Airlanding engineer platoon: 32 men. Paint.
>6pdrs (on order): 16 men, 4 guns. Assemble, Paint.
>3" mortars (on order): 6 men, 2 guns. Assemble, Paint.
>Locusts: 4 tanks. Convert, Paint.
>White Scout Cars: 2 cars. Convert 1, Paint both.
>Dingoes: 2 scout cars. Convert, Paint.
>Airborne Universal carriers (on order): 6 UCs. Assemble, Convert, Paint.
Got about two and a half weeks to do it all in. Like when I did the main batch of my airlanding, I'll post pics as I get things finished. Should be able to finish as long as the models on order arrive in time.
>>
Might as well bump with a pic of the starting group.
>>

Hey /fowg/ I've picked up bmps and i was wondering if you warpac players got an idea as to how i should set up my bmps and units
>>
>>53767814
If you're taking artillery you'll need one BMP1 for the Observer.

Then as Russians you'll take the rest as BMP2 for the konkurs spam. East Germans take a HQ BMP1 and a minimum sized BMP1 unit then take huge second unit with as many BMP2s as they can afford.
>>
>>53765485
Various armored cars.
M8/M20 dual kit
Sd.Kfz. 221/222/223 (PSC has us covered for the 8-rads, but the 4-rads are missing, aside from a soft Zvezda 222)
All the things the british used, or at least the main ones (Humber, Daimler, Marmon Herrington, Staghound, Dingos)
M3 White Scout Car
>>
>>53767903
I'm a bit hesitant to use artillery because i heard the skill is trash
also i picked up the zevzda carnations or whatever they are called and they look kinda trash.
And with the red guards having a +5 assault i don't think I'm going to be able to dislodge filthy western infantry at all.
at the very least I'm waiting for red thunder to help fix some of those fears.
I'm not happy that the t-55 will not be in the army list.
That reminds me did we get the leaks in, I've been away for a bit
>>
>>53768318
No T-55 for Russians certainly is a bit strange, I'd assumed the reason they shafted the East Germans out of the Bastion was to give them to the Russians.
>>
I'm almost done with these infantry... should I drybrush highlights before the wash or after the wash?

I do it afterwards, but doing it before lets the highlights be a bit more muted. I suppose it Depends on the level of contrast between the highlight and the base.

Locusts have had their stuff added. Stowage, smoke launchers, and a Littlejohn for the platoon leader (who also needed a new hatch made because I lost the metal original). The smoke launchers and littlejohn were a pain, since they're about the size of an infantry rifle and I had to carve the damn things from plasticard.

so for EW and LW do we still use V3 in the meantime?

But do yourself a favour and try V4.
>>

There's stuff to use V4 but I'd wait it out for now.
>>
>>53773472
There's a conversion to use EW and LW with V4. There's some points balance issues though, since the edition change resulted in a LOT of changes in effectiveness. Medium mortars are underpriced as hell, heavy arty is overpriced, and airplanes are either junk with noguns or gods of the battlefield with cannnons of destruction. And that's just the obvious ones.

>>
>>53778217
Let's talk a bit more about this in the interest of having a genuine conversation about how V4 is affecting our local scene.

Over here there are a couple of players that have started getting into flames with V4, but it doesn't seem like hardly anyone is picking MW up. I am going to try to run some events when the Eastern Front stuff comes out, but now I am only playing the occasional game.

TY is weird here. Everyone bought it, but people play games at random times. Everyone is into so many different games here. Seems like lately Bolt Action has been gaining more steam than Flames.
>>
>>53743998
STREWTH, FUCK OFF YA CUNT

>>
My community has pretty much moved onto other games. People are surprisingly dropping FoW for 40k and 30k. I never thought Id see the day...

We cant attract new players because the v4 rules are broken and of poor quality. They were literally not proofread.

We need a new 15mm IgoYougo game like FoW to fill the void and let us use our models.

MW is pretty lame. The options are too few. Given how fleshed out v2 MW was, it is a definite step backwards.

Fuck Phil and his smug laziness.

Cheers.

>Let's talk a bit more about this in the interest of having a genuine conversation about how V4 is affecting our local scene.
From here, people who already played want to play V3 but a lot of them are losing interest because tournaments are going to shift over eventually. The shop said they were hoping for another team yankee, but it's just sitting on shelves. They're hoping in 4-5 months someone will "discover" it and a community will emerge.
>>
>>53778449
Funny, similar here: lots of former 40k players who were playing FOW the past 4-8 years are more excited about 8th Ed 40k than they have been about FOW V4. We've had a few new FOW players (none doing MW), but easily lost at least that number of FOW Vets.

I'm sure it varies by region and group, but for me V4 was pretty poor. I'll give it the rest of the year to see, otherwise I'll be playing something else if things don't improve.

They should have started MW Kursk, if they had to start in Mid War.

Not surprised Really since Bolt Action is much easier to get into and isn't a hardcore simulation of ww2 battles.
The endless complains people are having with V4 is not excatlly going to help people get into the game.
I wanted to get into V3 but couldn't find players, or even encourage the local gamers in my area to play it or any other games for that manner.
>>
>>53766811

If you're in the UK Rosemary and Co series 33 brushes are good value for money.

I find 0 is the most useful brush size for 15mm. 2/0 is nice if you want to do a lot of face detail but not necessary. 1 and 2 are good size for block painting but I tend to use cheaper sable brushes for that.

If you don't already have it get Master's Brush Cleaner and Preserver. Use it to clean your brushes after every session.
>>
>>53778338
I'm trying to push v4 MW here but the most interested player has Italians so I might need to wait for them before making a big push. The rest are happy with v3 so FoW is not dead here.

I think you might be drawing conclusions that aren't implied.
>>
>>53779064

Yeah, BA's zany and fun and every LGS has piles of 28mm terrain. I can build a reinforced platoon for about 120 unless I'm going for a Soviet conscript horde or something.

FoW got into cheap plastics too late in the game(and only after PSC lit a fire under their asses).
>>
>>53780891

I think FoW is also pretty cheap to get into these days (for LW at least). I think they mainly just dropped the ball with the new MW releases. The lists are a bit anemic and the cards aren't doing enough to bulk up the options. I think the American and Italian release will help spice things up a bit, but I can't help but worry that the Eastern Front will get the same bit of "optimizing".

I mean unless you bring a bad list (M1s or Leo 2s) TY is expensive as hell to start, but its selling great for now. I assume interest in the Theatre of Operations is also a big driver of sales.
>>
>>53780891
Also 28mm, people really seem to like that scale for some reason, even if it means vehicles are absurdly large.
>>
>>53781189
>costs 150~ bucks for minimum sized bmp company.
>this is about less than 1/5 if you play 100pts or 1/4 80 points
>>
>>53781261

I suppose it has to do with the popularity of the Warhammer.

Tanks definitely feel a bit crowded in 28mm and their presence in an infantry platoon game is silly, though I understand that they're a cash cow and look cool.

For some reason I'm more bothered by heavy mortars and howitzers not being off-map units.

Still, it's hilarious to see a platoon level skirmish in BA with a random single 152mm howitzer on the front lines.

But the interior is untouched. And they put a LOT of radios in. Alternatively, I can cheat and put a cover on, which honestly saves more paint work than modeling work (making good looking fabric is a bitch)

So, I can:
>leave them as is
>convert both to full crazy radio versions
>convert one to radio and one to raised cover
>convert both to raised cover

These are the company command vehicles for my Nachtjager obligatory Nachtjager means Night Hunter Airborne Armored Recce company, and the only Whites in the force.

Flames seems pretty dead in my area from what I can tell. The boxes just sit on the shelves and no one buys them, which is bad cause its a pretty big hobby shop with lots of patrons. Bolt Action games are definitely picking up, I see that stuff selling and people playing it.

I have two other friends who are dedicated players though but we don't care about tournaments so we play slightly modified.

We do it in 6mm using GHQ miniatures and the better v4 rules (e.g. hit allocation) mixed with the old v3 rules.

It's bizarre. I really wish I hadn't sold all my figures for a song.

>>
>>53800873
>Battlefront is rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

All this doom and gloom and dark despair...

4th is a good game. Battlefront may be making some unusual decisions lately with the command cards and the bendy plastic, but the game itself is still pretty solid rules wise.
>>
>>53802539
>4th is a good game.
Eh. It's playable. It has a lot of weird decisions even over team yankee that make it janky and it's driven a lot of older players off. Also you can't really separate command cards from the game since that's how missions are meant to be played now.
>>
>>53802539
I'm more worried about the current trajectory with lists + cards. Right now the EW + LW lists are fine as stand ins, but there are a lot of things that aren't pointed correctly. But I also don't want EW and LW to get the gutting that MW received.
>>
>>53806123
See, this I don't understand...

The biggest complaint I always heard against LW is that it had too many special snowflake lists. To the point of absurdity.

Now people are upset that V4 seems to be too generic.

So which is worse? Too generic, or too snowflake?

Because I'm certain if they tried to go for something in the middle, somebody would be upset that their particular special snowflake list wasn't included.

It seems to me like the player base as a whole isn't happy unless they have something, anything, to bitch and moan about.
>>
>>53807825
>Too generic
It's this. You can ignore a snowflake list but lacking a generic one means you're fucked.

But then I played soviets and always wanted snowflakes.
>>
>>53807825
You can't honestly point at how abysmally anemic MW's content has become and go, "it's this or snowflakes, anon".

>"we have listened to your complaints by keeping LW exactly the same and deleting almost everything from MW, which literally nobody thought had too many lists"

>>
>>53809923

It's not that I am abandoning ship, it's just that Battlefront has been completely negligent to support products that they currently produce in their new books and cards. If you aren't prepared to purchase the new kits from the options that Battlefront has picked out, you are out of luck.

Currently MW on the eastern front is left in an awkward spot. We won't start getting books for it until next year. Though part of me is excited and wants to start collecting more MW equipment for my Soviets, I have no idea what will actually be included or left out of the new releases.

Playing Eastern Front lists with V4 rules is certainly an option, but there is still balance weirdness. Some units like T-34s are now greatly undercosted due to their armor and ability to dash across the board while some key components of my army (heavy howitzers, SU-122s, SU-152s) have been walloped with the nerf bat. I want to collect Razvedki, but I somehow doubt that will make it into V4 MW.

I understand Battlefront needs to bring people in and sell new kits to stay in business, but in my opinion they are doing a poor job of getting the existing community involved to help the new players along. The game seems to be suffering locally because of it. Even like one PDF of basic shit for the Soviets to bring in MW would be enough to assist players like me in promoting V4 in MW.
>>
>>53807825
>Now people are upset that V4 seems to be too generic.
Because BF took MW, which had a reasonable number of lists for every faction (~a dozen per book, with two books), and reduced it to 2 factions with 4-5 lists each. LW, where each faction has like 4 books with over a dozen lists in each? Completely untouched.

They hit the wrong thing and they hit it WAY too hard. It's like responding to someone saying their semi truck is too big by taking their commuter car and compressing it into a golf cart.
>>
>>53811100
Battlefront is dumb as a box of rocks if they think selling minis is sustainable. Unlike GW they can't do a fluff rehash and invalidate a line of models. 15mm WW2 is 15mm WW2. Without a decent ruleset, nobody will spend any money on their products. I can buy 15mm from PSC and play Battlegroup for less money.
>>
>>53812198
Which is exactly what they are trying to do... new kit releases for everything. It takes a bit of time to work through all those releases. I understand that they are trying to update the product... but I think they should have relied more on current models where they could have gotten by with it.
>>
Breakthrough Assault has a review up for the new PSC T-55.

It seems like there might be some minor build issues with the kit, and you'll need to use spare Battlefront tank commanders if you build it with open hatches, but the the end result looks nice.

I dig this review but guuuh the context bit at the start. When it's not being "cheers" it's really badly researched. How is arguably the best all-rounder tank until the M60 a "quantity over quality" tank?
>>
>>53817900
Eh... I mainly linked to it since it had some decent pictures of the kit itself and because it points out some potential issues with the build itself and how to work around them.

But yeah, some people seem to fully buy into the Cheers, especially the popular blogs.

As for "quantity over quality", it's probably because like the T-34 before it, the T-55 was produced in obscenely large numbers.
>>
>>53817900
>the T-55 reflected the first moves towards accepting a little less quantity for a bit more quality

Are we reading the same article?
>>
>>53817900
>the context bit at the start
In order:

The T-44 was not produced too late to see the war; it was held back from the eastern front for logistical reasons and fought in Manchuria with over 600 tanks.
The T-44 couldn't carry the 100mm gun; the turret ring had to be enlarged. T-44-100 also had the T-34-85 style turret, the T-54 had a weird round thing to begin with that had noticeable shot traps.
The L7, at least in the 1960s, did not dramatically outgun the D-10T unless you're assuming the soviets weren't allowed HEAT rounds. An equivalent sabot round was available from 67.
T-55 did not give stabilisers and IR capability; stabilisation came with T-54A, while it improved and gained an IR sight with late-production T-54B. NBC did come with T-55, and the lack of the non-airsafe vent is one of the ways to tell apart T-55s from T-54s externally.
Also fuck the "they finally accepted quality over quantity!" nonsense, the T-34 was the best tank in the world at the time of it's introduction.

Additionally the T-55AM and AM2 aren't east german; essentially everyone produced them.
>>
>>53818139
>Are we reading the same article?
It's phrased as if the T-55 was still a cheap and cheersful spam-tank to xaxaxaxa the west to death with, rather than probably the world's best tank for a decade and a half.

So I finally got my hands on PSC's Universal Carriers. An amazing kit with tons of options, even if half of the sprue is unused on a given carrier. But there's one problem: If you follow the directions as given, you're told to put the front armor plate on and then the crew in afterwards. However, the driver is impossible to fit in once you've glued the front on.

LW, the Luftwaffe basically ceased to exist. What a bright red and white flag on the top of your tank says is "Allied Aircraft, shoot me!". A German tank is going to keep their flags nicely tucked away if they brought them at all because the allies had complete air supremacy. Putting one on a US tank is asking for a really bad friendly fire incident.

Now, EW, when the Luftwaffe reigned supreme over Europe? You'd see them all the time on german vehicles. Just like how most allied tanks had an allied star or two on their top surfaces to reduce friendly fire incidents.

Incredibly dull compared to what?

first, don't think WH40k players don't just paint the scheme in the book. (if the niggers just refuse to paint at all) most of those fags play a cannon chapter of smurfs.
you CAN fuck with your color scheme and have it make sense, (or fun) which is 1/2 the reason Germany and Russia are popular: only Burger/Bongland had the whole drab-only deal. hell, see Finland and Hungary for different camo schemes.

as for dull action? it's the best combined arms game i know with ease of entry. so, you don't have psykers, or heroes that wash through enemy troops? is cheezehammer the game you really wanna play?
....or, want a tactical challenge? try "close to realism" for a change. FoW, Bolt Action, and BattleGroup are great BECAUSE the game tries to model realism, instead of power fantasies...that's why all these whiny hipsters and bluehairs love fantasy gaming...they can get their power fantasy fix once they find the game-break.

even the most broken list in FoW can find itself in a corner after 1 or 2 small mistakes.

in the end, this game is about facing the unexpected and solving problems. you have to think and apply, not just roll up with your combo.

I fielded my US paratroopers out of Market-Garden with as many bazookas, AT guns, and British Sherman Fireflies as I could pack into the list.

but a CSA army ala' Turtledove w V4 Americans (Stuarts, Lee's) would cause -infinitely- more butthurt.

I would love to find some minis that look and feel like they could be from an alternative WWII and not just repainted tanks from the real WWII.

Because I seriously doubt the Barrels looked anything like Shermans, Lees, Grants, etc.

I painted my first tank today, /fowg/. I tried out a wash with a drybrush on top of it because I don't really know what else to do. The wash came out uneven. In some spots that looks good but in others it looks terrible. There also has to be an easier way to get the green on. I feel like I'm wasting a lot of paint in that process.
>>
>>53865234
doesn't look bad for a first try, you're off to a good start :)

For the wash, try doing a 50/50 mix of Glaze Medium and the shade. Mix and apply generously. Wait 10-15 minutes, dip cotton swab in water and clean up all the spots you dont want shade (any protruding/large smooth surfaces). Almost never turns out uneven and gives you much more control. Leave to dry for a day or so, and then high light.
>>
>>53865234
>There also has to be an easier way to get the green on

With time your brush proficiency will improve a lot.

>The wash came out uneven. In some spots that looks good but in others it looks terrible.

Acrylic washes have a big downside in that it's really hard to do anything with them after they've dried. Oil and enamel washes on the other hand can be cleaned up quite easily even after having dried, up to a few days later for oil washes.

To make an oil wash, put a small amount of oil paint on a piece of cardboard and let it sit for a while to draw out excess oil. Then mix it with white spirits to make a wash. Apply, let dry, whipe off any excess/bad spots with white spirits.

Whatever variant you choose, even sticking to acrylics, you'll probably want to gloss coat the model first. This can help the wash flow, and helps protect the model and paintjob from the thinners used.

Of course, lad. Chew your food, remember to breathe, and don't be a buttboy.
>>
>>53865234
I used to do the same thing, now I generally use a thinner brush to just apply wash around raised details rather than over the whole thing, not *quite* pinwashing but a similar kind of thing. This method also prevents any camouflage you've tried being obscured.

Look man, you really don't have to get upset on behalf of others. My family are islanders and on the islands we have much more to deal with than getting called nigger or coolie.
Rodney price had the right idea, the poor in Jamaica live like dogs man. I wish the British will take us back because when Cuba opens up for all tourism there really isn't a reason to go to Jamaica any more (might actually be the case now not sure how the burgs deal with Cuba).
Point is just enjoy the thread and don't get caught up on every little thing people say, i mean the warpac/v4 whinging is over. Everything is looking fine.

the 761st. it's tank and mechanized. theirs was primarily the tri-color triangle with 761 on it, but their TD crews prominently wore the badge TD's would be known by: the black cat on a yellow roundel eating treads.

And even then the L7 had their initial problems against the T-54/55.

The history, design and performance of the L7 compared with the D-10 is pretty interesting, and it shows you that if Germany had used the Long 88 for some more years it could have been a close competition to the L7.

>>
>>53883204
Most of his sources are the chump who writes the Ospreys.
>>
>>53879563
He's using one of the ex-designers from Steel Beast's estimations that, as multiple people pointed out, ignores a minor element of protection known as "density" and might even be an incorrect estimate entirely from looking at cross-sections of the turret armour. After he left soviet armour suddenly got way better, incidentally.

>>53884400
Ospreys on soviet stuff are usually written by Zaloga, who is both good and also gives way higher estimates than BF do.

So I'm painting my west germans in swedish colours since sweden used some of the wg stuff.
Thing is, sweden didn't use the leo 1 and I'm not sure how to paint it.
Norway and denmark did use the leo 1 but all pics I can find shows the turret to be significantly different to the bf model.
I guess what I'm asking is, what contries bought the version of leo 1 that bf sells?

The BF model is of the Leo 1A3 which has the boxy welded turret. As far as I can tell, the 1A3 variant was used by Australia, Greece, Denmark and Turkey.

The rounded turret was from the original Leopard 1 Stock and the A1. Later the West Germans made the A5 upgrade (pictured in your post) to modernize these older variants. These upgrades were popular with the export customers who bought their Leopard 1s earlier, Norway, Belgium, Netherlands, Canada and Italy.
