I'm hoping the meta will swing back towards linear aggro (for obvious reasons), but I don't think anything needs to be banned.

When will the Death's Shadow meme end?

1. A ban.
2. The meta adjusts to suppress it.

Why isn't protection from (insert color here) more prevalent in Modern? Besides Auriok Champion.

You need protection from red, black, and white for bolt, push, and path. Auriok Champion has two of those, and no other playable creatures really do

Naturally, I make exceptions for Affinitybros.
I've played the deck, it requires 4d chess levels of thinking to get the best results with, but at least games end quickly against affinity. My real gripe is when matches drag on and go to time. Fuck durdling.
>>

He is good in ThopterSword, but that is all I can think of really. He is really solid. His -x can be used to ramp, pulling out Opals and Darksteel Citadels, I really like doing janky shit like that.

Why doesnt affinity run barey any affinity cards?
isnt that its thing or did all the affinity cards get banned or somthing
>>
>>53717924
Because the only affinity card that holds up at all is thoughtcast. Metalcraft and other synergistic cards are just so much more powerful.
>>
>>53717950
soo, it just got sidelined, but the other cards stayed cause they were good cards?

I think Razor Golem is a good card and it is a shame that it doesn't see play in Death and Taxes. It would fit very nicely alongside blade Splicer IMO

>special B&R announcement ahead of schedule so we can "discuss, dissect, and dive into"

Who else is ready for pic related to come back to save the format?
>>
>>53721461
Not happening. They just moved the B&R announcement up to get it out of the way so that they can have the good stuff on Wednesday.

"On Tuesday, we'll have two items you should pay attention to—one is about our Magic digital offerings coming up and the other is the banned and restricted announcement that was originally scheduled for June 14.

We are moving the B&R announcement up because Wednesday is going to be what you would traditionally think of as Announcement Day, where we announce a ton of upcoming new products and worlds. Since we're focusing on everything we're putting out for our 25th anniversary next year, we want to give this announcement its own day for you to discuss, dissect, and dive into."

Alternatively, cut them and Wake the Reflections and put in Blade Splicers and Restoration Angels. Still, I don't see the deck winning any major tournaments soon, but I have a soft spot in my heart for GW tokens, particularly the cards from RTR and INN.

Because both decks are fast linear aggro that requires proper sequencing. One Misplay and the other player will win. Games can end as early as turn 3 giving players ample time to go out for a smoke or get subway or whatever.

Went 2-2 at FNM with an aether vial/collected company based werewolf deck. >>
>>53729653
Agreed. It's something that works fine for Standard, as specific decks don't stick around for very long (or aren't supposed to), so having [card name] [archetype] works fine. But pretty much every other format should have interesting or descriptive deck names. We don't call Burn "RW Lightning Bolt" or Affinity "Artifact Creature Ravager Aggro".
>>
Memes and the meta not being in a good spot for them aside, what 'sword of's do you guys think are the best?

Fire and Ice is great in Legacy but Bolt not being strong right now is kinda meh. Feast and Famine sounds the best in Modern due to GBx being huge right now, but Light and Shadow could also be ridiculous depending on the meta you play it in.

Thoughts?

>>53730049

>>
What would happen if Wizards bans Street Wraith and Collected Company next week?
>>
>>53730146
>Body and Mind
The ability to create chump blockers and potentially go wide enough is good, but the mill (and potential Snapcaster fuel) is pretty bad. Probably pretty low.

>Feast and Famine
Protection from Black and from Green (two of the most played colors overall) is pretty sweet. Ripping apart your oponents hand is pretty good. Untapping lands is a huge potential tempo swing. I'd rate fairly highish.

>Fire and Ice
Pro R is better than U, but is still only okay. Repeated Shock and card advantage is decent , though. I'd put it in the middle, overall.

>Light and Shadow
Pro W and B is pretty tits, as it dodges a huge chunk of removal. Path, Push, Terminate, Abrupt Decay, etc. Probably the best protection combo. But lifegain is lame, and the recursion is only okay. Probably on the same tier as F&I

>War and Peace
Probably the worst in my opinion, although I could be wrong. Pro RW is fine, but doesn't dodge larger portions of the metagame, and damage/lifegain based on hand size is no better than Lightning Helix most of the time.

I'd rate them Feast & Famine> Fire & Ice = Light & Shadow > Body & Mind > War & Peace. Of course, they're not really that good in the format overall. I've seen a couple of them as 1 offs in tempo lists, though. Also, I could be completely wrong.
>>
>>53730378
Thank you, anon.

If you would be so kind. Could you follow me into a thought experiment?

If, and only if, because I know this is sure to cause a shitstorm Stoneforge Mystic were to be unbanned, which swords would you play in the main deck and, if you were to, which would you play in the side?

I feel its completely meta-dependant. Feast and Famine would probably be the best to slot into main along with a Batterskull, but I feel SFM is best at 3 equipments to pull.

I feel its a toss-up between Fire and Ice and Light and Shadow.
>>
>>53730088
>We don't call Burn "RW Lightning Bolt"
Burn is what we call the type of spell/ability that the deck is built around.

Once upon a time, Affinity was built around the affinity for artifacts keyword.

Decks are almost always named after a keyword, central card, and/or archetype.

>>
>>53730378
No, you're right. Bant Midrange used to run them back in the early days of the format, and found them to be entirely too slow even then and cut them for an aura-based "blouses" suite. Batterskull with one or two meta-dependent swords would still have you fetching Batterskull more often than not.

I wonder how Fruity Pebbles got the name.
>>
>>53730450
I would always maindeck 2 F&F, probably anyway. Being able to dodge a black-based removal when equipped and constantly wrecking hands + untapping lands is a gake-winner. L&S could be split between maindeck and side. Probably 2 depending on metagame. More removal protection and the possibility of getting a SFM back to hand seems pretty good. And 1 F&I in the sideboard, possibly 2 (but probably not), for really grindy matchups. So a 5 card Sword package along with 3 Batterskull and whatever else you want, I guess.
>>
>>53730450
Not him, but I'd choose Fire and Ice over Light and Shadow in Stoneblade. The deck runs enough evasive creatures to get it through, and its effect is far stronger than Light and Shadow.
>which would you play in the side
Manriki-Gusari is the only equipment I'd run in the side.
>>
>>53730623
CoCo will most likely get banned eventually, but probably not for another year or so. I'd still say get them.

More than 1 Batterskull? Is that due to so much artifact hate in the meta? What's your reasoning behind that? Having That many equipments in the main feels like it would dilute the rest of your game plan or force you to bank on drawing SMF's and having them survive a turn after being played.

CoCo will get banned because Standard needs good creatures that cost 3 or less and eventually the value of CoCo (in modern) will get out of hand.

>>53730863
Depends on the meta. A lot of things are up in the air right now. Hard to say what creatures stoneblade would run. Burning a creature and drawing a card every turn is just too good to pass up if I can do it. I'd test it and see of I really needed an extra sword. I'd run Manriki-Gusari on the assumption that there would be a lot of people playing stoneblade if Mystic got unbanned.

One that actually does the damage once resolved?
>>
>>53735197
>>53735564
It's far more complicated than just being a 5 mana wincon that doesn't win on the spot. Summonings is also really bad in multiples and requires a lot of setup even after landing it to help you win. Not to mention that always having a specific card that's a 4 of in your deck isn't going to happen some of the time.

It does have a powerful effect, but it's just not good enough, think of it like seance... Seance's effect is really good, but at it's mana cost and what it needs to be setup it's not. Combined with you still need a setup another cards to win, it's not very good in modern, same thing for summonings.
>>

>It's far more complicated than just being a 5 mana wincon that doesn't win on the spot.
It really isn't and I never said anything about winning on the spot. Even if you get to resolve a Summonings it's going to take several turns to put you in a position to win the game if you even live to that point, which is a big downside in modern.

I'm pretty new to modern and mtg in general, but I like burn and I've been slowly collecting pieces to work my way up to naya burn.
I'm pretty firmly planted in mono-red right now until I get enough money to get fetch/shock and the cards to justify them, but I've been playtesting naya burn, virtually, against some of my cheaper decks (talking like $30-$45) and it seems to lose pretty consistently to them.

The decks I've tried it against aren't my own brew it's just standard mono-green counters and mono-white soul sisters.

Am I doing something wrong here or is naya burn just calibrated to run against other meta decks?
>>
>>53742658
>Soul Sisters
Literally Burn's worst matchup.

Burn half counts on people damaging themselves through fetch/shocklands. It's much easier to blow someone up when they deal 5 to themselves.
>>
>>53742711
I figured as much. I've got a casual group of friends that I play with and I've been thinking of changing up the deck a bit so that it's more suited to people not using fetches and shocks.

Should I bring more cards suited for a slower clock? Guttersnipe/young pyro etc.?
Having meta decks is fun and all, but it's strange how the meta burn deck isn't really compatible with lower end ones. Green 1/1 counters kind crushes it just as bad as sisters.
>>

Correct.

good to know, thanks anon.

now, back onto a different subject.

is UB tezzuret control still good or no?
>>
Guys I need your help. I cannot find anything and I have a bet with my friend.
I need to know every deck successfully brought from standard to modern. Decks that were so good in modern that broke into other formats in general (f.e. Birthing Pod)
>>
What are the odds that Shadow decks get nerfed/banned? I start to fear Street Wraith's ban
>>
>>53750955
Twin
Jund
Faeries to some extent
Some Valakut decks

Other shit
>>
>>53750955
Nobody plays it, but Abzan Reianimator from Scars-Innistrad standard is totally playable. Add a Siege Rhino or two, and thoughtsize and you have a deck that is just nuts.I'll put the list together in just a sec.
>>
>>53750998
I would hit Traverse if anything. No need to kill Living End as well.
>>
>>53751091
Jund Shadow isn't the overpowered one though, its grixis shadow that has 13 day two decks and 4 top 8s.
>>
>>53751091
DSJ isn't even top dog anymore girxis shadow is
>>
Ban Fatal Push
It was a mistake.
>>
>>>53751198
oh no, playable removal that can hit tarmogoyf without giving up tempo

Blog time:

>visit parents as I want to lend some old vinyls
>they keep them at the attic with all the other old stuff
>start the treasure hunt
>instead of vinyls find an old deckbox
>2x vesuva, 3x lotus bloom, academy ruins, 3x glimmervoid a playset of Master of Etherium (foils), Tolarian Academy plus a pile of crap

I guess I'm gonna trade this Friday like one big motherfucker. I really need some marsh flats.

Based Eldrazi helping to get things banned

Eldrazi Tron is on the rise

and Tron is inherently cancerous in modern because there is such a lack of land removal options

I guarantee banning it would be a popular decision
>>
>>53752527
Grixis Shadow has a good sideboard plan against tron though, they will just play more anti tron tech and swarm GP Vegas's day 2 meta.
>>
>>53752527
>I guarantee banning it would be a popular decision
Only for blue-fags and the less cool midrange players.
>>
>>53752706
Nobody really likes Eldrazi. They are a mistake and only get by via having a sol land.

and regular Tron is so boring that I'd rather it get banned. It's match ups are so boring and one-sided that they might as well not be played.

Instead the Tron player should just ask if the other player is on combo or aggro and if they are Tron should just scoop instead of wasting time.
>>
>>53752803
Tron helps keep the real cancer at bay. I salute them.

Metagame is not all about power level, it is also fashion. People like to play the brand new decks, just like clothing. Remember Jeskai Nahiri?
There are decks that never stopped to be good but see less play just because people want to play other decks.
If you want to talk about diversity than you should look at every viable deck in the format. Every deck that has some edge of being competitive. There is plenty of them actually.
The only bad period I remember is the eldrazi winter because every deck turned to be bad against eldrazi before the ban of eye of ugin.
Company decks never ceased to be good, UWR control is returning for no fucking reason because it left the meta for no fucking reason (other than fashion), Junk sees a little more play, Esper is a thing, even Amulet is making tops.
Jund is underlooked right now but it is still a bad ass deck, see last Reid Duke's perfomance.
A couple weeks ago, one of my friends at locals (a big money guy who can build litteraly every deck in every format) told me after I ask his point on Grixis Shadow that "it is pointless to play grixis, jund is way stronger: Traverse, Tarmo that beats you potentially for 6 on turn 2...". He was playing Grixis shadow last friday night. Not a single card has changed in the Grixis build since then, but his point of view changed because you know, everybody plays that.

>"it is pointless to play grixis, jund is way stronger: Traverse, Tarmo that beats you potentially for 6 on turn 2..."
your friend is a retard.
>>
>>53752803
As a combo player that's not true. If they win the coinflip and get to be on the play t3 karn -3, t4 karn -3 new karn -3 is backbreaking and you're unlikely to recover before they find an ulamog or a fucking worldbreaker. I've lost to that exact line more than once playing shit that's supposed to be favored like titanshift and living end
