So I've never tried Pathfinder (or rpgs in general besides a brief GURPS campaign eons ago), but I got invited into a campaign my buddy wants to DM. Its one of those pre made campaigns, set in like spooky haunted Russia or some jive.

I wanted to roll up a necromancer, because it seemed in theme and I just fucking love skeletons. But my GM wasn't familiar with the best way to make one. Looking online it seemed there were a ton of conflicting opinions on what classes were best, or what feats/skills were good or misleading.

So what is the best route for churning out the undead?

I'd love to see if there's room to have my Pathfinder mercs - the Blackwing Mercenary Company - still be a thing, with a long history of just generally mercing it up. But I'm not sure how much of a wrench that whole "big chunk of missing time amnesia" is gonna throw into the story idea for that.

If nothing gets in the way, though, I'd love to see them updated as space mercs. They were led by a guy named Caros the Crow (who got his nickname because of his raven familiar, and people not knowing the difference between ravens and crows). Though Caros himself was absolute shit at dealing with people (he was a brilliant tactician, but not a very good leader), so the more commonly known face of the company is Morgrim the Lost, an exiled dwarf. It was a small company, known for dispatching several five- to ten-person teams of skilled professionals rather than being the more common "small army for hire", and they got a reputation for taking on charity cases from people who had nobody else to turn to. Basically the perfect PC origin fodder, and I've ended up playing several characters that originated as members of the Blackwings, including Caros and Morgrim themselves.

Pathfinder is a system that does nothing but dump options upon options on characters. Horror requires a sense of vulnerability (but not hopelessness)

There's no reason why that couldn't be the case. From what little I've gathered there is a massive span of time between the old pathfinder timeline and the current one because apparently Absalom station existed before the GAP happened. So maybe your guys have been operating operations operationally but now it takes on more of a mythic sort of deal because they only know about the founders from what little records they have.

Pathfinder can have the bar lowered if you just throw out initiating, full casters, etc. It's not like every game is going to have six initiator/caster gestalts with some 2hu-esque build, sometimes people don't have a problem playing lower-powered characters if it's a game they actually want to be in. That's when you start changing around the resource system. Vancian was never my style (even though I favor it over Spherecasting for my characters). If you wanted to use this system, I'd use a layout similar to this:
