Greetings, samurai of /L5Rg/. Once more the Miya herald has done his circuits of the internet to bring us a new fiction for L5R which means it is time for another general thread to commemorate it. In this one, the inevitable happens and Toturi gets to have a private breakdown over it: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2017/6/7/the-price-of-war/

This is the thread for RPG, old5R CCG, new5R LCG, and general setting fluff discussion. Ask about decks, discuss rules, seek guidance from the council on your campaigns, what have you.

So first question of the thread: How did people like the new fiction? And how are you feeling about the direction FFG is taking the game based on the mechanical previews we've seen so far?
>>
>>53681682
Seems like they tossed this out to calm people who are worried about the fluff being unrecognizable. This is pretty much exactly what happened to Arasou in the base timeline, though IIRC Toturi didn't get called out from the monastery until after Arasou got himself killed. Toturi is also still personal friends with Crane Clan champ. Though I don't think Hotrui personally killed Araousu, Tsuko is still a massive ragebitch and they name dropped Gohei, Aketoki, and Motso, so we expect some of old staple chars to make it into the game.

As a Crab that's got me drooling a bit for Amoro...
>>
>>53681831
Motso appeared in the fiction a few times to get almost killed and then stand around while his lords fought shamefully. I kind of feel bad for him

There is an important difference. In the original timeline it is Tsuko's hesitation that gets Arasou killed. In this one it is Tsuko's eagerness and Arasou's unwillingness to listen to Toturi that gets him killed.

Also Agetoki seems to be really bro tier in this incarnation.

I'm going to steal from the FFG forums here but this post breaks down why Arasou a shit in all editions and why it is actually plot relevant:

>or all of Toturi's inferiority complexes (brought on him by his terrible family, especially his mother's side) Arasou was actually the bad son. Arasou was a Matsu at heart, and he knew it. And unfortunately, he wanted to be the stereotypical Matsu (The best tactic is to drown the enemy in their own blood) not the smart Matsu (find the best way to kill the enemy, then drown them in their own blood). If you read the old story, while it constantly praises Arasou and the Lion feel they've never had a Champion like him and build a huge statue...even though he literally did nothing in his whole career. The Lion of this generation are ruled by Matsu mentality (Toturi's father had to give up HIS name to marry Toturi's mother even though he was champion), and have forgotten their past. Orignally, Arasou's campaign to reclaim Toshi Ranbo showed how bad a leader he was. His army was instantly hit with resistance and ambush tactics he wasn't prepared for (and considering that's the Daidoji's main tactic, every Lion Champ should expect that), but instead of adapting to the situation, he just powered forward with his army, thinking force would win the day over skill and guile. Arasou literally walked into Crane trap after Crane trap until he walked into his own death on the inside of the walls the Crane opened so they could cut him off and ambush him inside. So yeah, Arasou was supposed to be a failure of a Champion, but he was everything the Matsu (especially Tsuko) wanted in a Champion, so they'll never admit it. This was how it was in the old story. And from what I see, that's how it is in this one, too.

Arasou a shit, and his death is important to make the Lion wake up to how they've been suckered into a vortex of increasing Matsu aggression and not enough of their other family traditions.
>>
>>53682987
Had to keep Tsuko pure so all the waifu fags could drool over a Tsundere Matsu Dakimakura.

Honestly, I kind of hope that while they've got the same starting point as the base timeline they allow the storyline to be decided by tournies. And for real, not the "shoehorn our metaplot in no matter what happens" crap that got pulled so often before.

Imagine being Kitsu Motso at the meeting where they decide to kick Toturi out, and leave Tsuko as champion. And just like knowing you are the smartest person in the room but you're so fucking honorable that you can't tell your superiors why this idea is the worst thing since putting Hida Kisada in charge of people. And then 5 years later you're standing there at the day of Thunder, and Ikoma Tsunari is babbling at you about oaths to the emperor or some shit and you're just wishing you had never heard of bushido. Then Toturi rolls up and you're like "oh thank the kami my day has come" and he puts Tsunari in charge. Two years later you die at Volturnum because you realize not existing is better than being a part of the Lion Clan
Being Motso is suffering

Matsu Berserker is for more experienced players tho. Ironically enough, you have to play intelligently with a Matsu Berserker or you will bite the dust in the first skirmish.

For beginners, the Akodo Bushi is a better choice.
>>
>>53688220
Once you realize that there's nothing in the rules that says you can't take some of your move, swing and then keep moving the rank 2 Matsu tech becomes amazing tho. Naturaly high water ring with Kitsu dropping movement buffs and you're damn near untouchable.

Grim
>>
>>53688146
The suffereing started even before that. Don't forget Motso's Kitsu blood is, for some reason, so weak he can't talk to the ancestors, despite being the eldest son of the main branch of the Kitsu family and having a younger brother who is by all acounts an amazing ass sodan-senzo.

But hey, at least he's not Ikoma Ryozo

I thought the Lion's Pride was the Super Special Matsu Grill Squad, why the fuck would they be bullying people in court?
>>
>>53689107

They obviously didn't. Tsuko is angry because she is a sexually frustrated perma-virgin. That's, like, half her character right there.
>>
>>53689170
Are you implying that because she's built like a womanly tank and can kill a man with just about anything you put into her hands, including paint brushes, she can't attend court?
>>
>>53689382
I was wondering why a member of an elite military special forces unit, notable even amongst the elite military Matsu Family, would be in court in the first place and not conducting numerous secret raids on Al Queda. I highly doubt the Hiruma Berserker card will have him in a kimono inside a city.
>>
>>53689408
Because the Lion are not ill mannered boors and can appear in public without shaming their clan. Clearly she is being dragged around as like a Lion propaganda piece by some Ikoma. Which sounds like wacky buddy political adventures I'd want to read.
>>

>elite military special forces unit
The samurai unit originally formed when Matsu chose as her personal bodyguard? Whose main tactic is to kill enemy generals by straight charge?

NOWHERE DOES AKODO WRITE A SAMURAI MUST BE CIVILIZED. ONLY COURTEOUS. SO I COURTEOUSLY INVITE YOU TO THINK OF A MORE CORRECT ANSWER
>>
Going with Topaz Championship for an intro.
How do people handle different gempukku rituals?
I just telling matsu, and bayushis they family forced them to take their rituals beforehand, giving them the wakazhi and letting the player decide if they actually wear it(and insult their host).
Furthermore how is gear handeld. For this adventure, I declare all samurai are regarded as warriors and the kids have brought their katana with them, (for a minor non-first son samurai of a household, a katana of his daimyos armory) as they would only receive their wakazhi later.
>>
>>53692151

Topaz Championship replaces standard gempukku regardless of where you come from, because it is the Gempukku Tournament
Being able to participate means that you've done so well as a student, instead of completing your education on the level of your clan, you do so on the level of the entire empire
Having them do their clan/family gempukku ritual beforehand means they have finished their gempukku, means that they are not eligible to participate
If you want them to have done the clan/family gempukku, don't run Topaz Championship with those characters as participants (which defeats the purpose, kind of)
Otherwise, gempukku should stay in the backstory of the character (IR1 samurai are considered to have finished their education, meaning completed their gempukku)

As for gear, not sure what you mean
Upon completion of their gempukku, each samurai receives his daisho (katana and wakizashi), as well as any other appropriate coming-of-age gifts
The daisho is their own, although in case of being the heir of a household, it may be the ancestral daisho of the family, previously held by the father, who is now either dead or has retired to a monastery (not always the case, but from what i can tell considered the norm)
Anything that a samurai receives here is now property of that samurai
A samurai may make a request to their lord to "lend" certain items, with the implication that they shall be returned in the same condition they were lent, and it shall only be for as long as those items are of use to the samurai in his service to his lord
Any other gear the samurai has to buy, with income based on his household's holdings, and the stipend of his lord for whatever service he may do

Any other questions?
>>
>>53692499
good answer
>>
>>53692499
I always had swords "skip" generations. So a young (first-born) samurai would inherit his grandfather's sword as his father is likely still on active duty. And then other children would get blades from their daimyo's armory, which if warranted might include a blade with significant lineage. On the father's death his sword would be held by his first-born to be given to his first-born. Obviously there are exceptions, like the Clan Champions almost always bear their clan's ancestral blade and take it up on their ascension to the position.
>>
>>53692499
Thank you.
But what weapon would the players used both in he ambush but also the tournament?
Would they just grab a training blade for the iijatsu tournament?
>>
>>53693011
Training weapons for the most part, though the iaijustu tournament at the end of the Topaz Championship is specifically done with live steel. They shouldn't be fighting in an ambush on the way to the tournament, that shit is a job for an adult and they are still children.
>>
>>53691302
Death is light as air;
Honor is heavy as stone.
>>
>>53693011
>>53693110

I think he's meaning in the module, haven't properly read it, only played it, but there might be an ambush in there relating to one of the NPCs (don't know because my ST rolled up some random NPCs to replace them, so it's less cookie cutter than the actual module)

As for those participating, since they are not proper samurai yet, they technically aren't "allowed" to carry proper weapons, though for the most part people only really care whether or not it's the daisho, if i recall

You're right, though, training weapons for everything except the iaijutsu tournament during the Championship, though they shouldn't be underestimated, in the skirmish contest, rolled enough explosions to knock my opponent unconcious

I think that's a good way to extend high value card life but I don't know who it will favor since I'm sure some clans benefit more from low balling honor bids anyway. I guess Crane?
>>
>>53701538
I think we'll need to see the whole environment to really see how useful it is. The other thing to consider is when you are low-balling honor bids you are getting less card draw, so is keeping a dude around another round worth a card. I can see it working if you have another non-honor based source of regular card draw, like the Crane might have with the Sincerity trait (which grants card draw when that character leaves play).
>>
>>53701538

I'm guessing Dragon, since they're looking pretty voltrony and seem to like attachments. Could be useful to get an extra turn before discarding attachments with the character, depending on the cards they get.

If L5R RPG were to be converted to another system, or even just have a rules overhaul, what, in your opinion, would be absolutely necessary?

I think there's only a small handful of things. Off the top of my head, rules or at least protocol for duels; an honour, glory, and perhaps a rank track; some method of Taint spread & mutation therefrom; some tracking of politics; and maybe a list of abilities available to each Clan/Family/School, though that could be worked out as low-level powers, boons, or whatever said system has.

Please berate, bebother, and disabuse me of any ridiculous notions I may have.

Any good riddles for escentric Dragon gempukku.
A player of mine is a big fan of mystical shit so I'm trying to create some cool ritual.
As of now his sensei will just come to him and ask him a single question.
"Why does a bird fly?".
As long as the answer is what the student truly believes, he will pass.
Or should I go with another one.
More fitting if the sensei is close to the sparrow but I also thought of clean a throughly disorginized room, so filled one couldn't walk from one side to another.
If the student questions the task, he'll be asked in return why does the student think he should clean.
All acceptable but only these will make the sensei smile:
"So one can cross the room." Or "because the trash will pile up to the hips"
Opinions?

The problem is that the entire game was built around the system. How the stats/abilities interact with skills and combat is completely interwoven.
You can of course take concepts and ideas out, but the mechanics themselves would cause anyone a massive headache to balance after conversion.
Not to mention that R&K is one of the best systems on the market.

The Venom of Flesh kiho gives you a lethal poison after any kind of body fluid exchange. So you kiss the girl and you literally crumble away into dust unless you can pass a TN 30 Earth Ring roll five times (with each failure decreasing your Earth Ring by 1, making future rolls so much harder).

Thanks anon. Its more that I tend to jump from system to system from the perspective of my friends - well hell, they only play during the summer, I game all year and want to introduce them to all the fun stuff - so they asked if it were possible I could convert the game to another system they've already played, or maybe a more generic system.

I've never played or run L5R so I only have what knowledge I can glean from reading. So I dunno what really is important to the game, not so much just from a mechanical point of view, but what the game needs to run as a game of drama in Rokugan effectively.

The (bird) flies south in the winter. In the spring, we say it returns, but where does the bird call home?

What makes a Dragon?

Sensei could also challenge his notion of honour - one thing that I always think is silly is that Samurai eat only grain, rice, vegetables and fish in land-locked regions.
HOW THE HELL ARE THEY STILL GETTING FISH DECENT ENOUGH TO EAT SO FAR FROM THE COAST?
Anyway, have the student hunt say a boar or something with heimen (it is heimen or is it only eta who can eat pork?), prepare it with them, all that, maybe it's part of a small festival. After, the sensei asks the student why they didn't eat the creature they killed.

Poor Dragon samurai canonically eat meat, usually goat. They just call it mountain tuna. It's probably possible to work that trivia into it in an amusing way.
>>
>>53746491
The idea that a mainland country subsists entirely on fish as its source of protein is pretty laughable. I could buy that they don't eat red meat but instead eat pork and poultry.

The same goes with the whole leather retardation. Leather is just too useful a material to ignore before artificial fibers are invented. I totally get that tanning is unclean work, but the finished has been purified for use. Finnicky samurai might not want leather in direct contact with them but they certainly can't avoid using it for things like saddles and straps.
>>
>>53746667
Not to mention industrial usages for tools and construction work.
>>
>>53746491
>>53746667
As far as food goes, they eat poultry for sure. Pork isn't directly mentioned as far as I know.

Leather is not widely used by samurai before the Unicorn comes back. Cavalry is minimal and presumably uses blanket saddles. After the Unicorn, leather is used, but only after being ritualistically purified and still with minimum contact. There are eta leatherworkers, so presumably heimin and hinin do use leather even before the Unicorn, but they most likely try to minimize it where possible.
>>
>>53746491
Funnily enough, it's actually the eta and less picky peasants who get to eat red meat all the time. Whenever a decent lord who has at least a modicum of goodwill towards their subjects goes hunting, all the red meat they hunt down is given to the lower classes, since it would otherwise go to waste.

Stuff like rules or at least structure for a formal duel and what else I mentioned above?

>>53746491
Huh, didn't know that. That's something I can sorta imagine most clans doing, just sorta sweeping their dietary transgressions under the rug.
Now I wanna come up with some other "pretend it's clean" names for stuff.
Like beef could be Plains Tofu (if you've ever had properly done extra firm tofu it can be similar) or maybe Grass Salmon, horse...wouldn't be mentioned around the Unicorn.

Eta of Ryoko Owari rebelled in the so-called Garbage Rebellion in the 7th century. As a result of that rebellion all the Eta in Ryoko Owari demanded to be referred to as Leatherworks as it was seen as the least offensive of all the professions available to Eta. We don't have an exact year of the Garbage Rebellion, but we know that the 12th Governor of Ryoko Owari was in charge when it happened and that Hantei the XVII was the Emperor then. We know that Hantei XVII was born in the year 600, became Emperor in 616, but don't have a date for is death. Hantei the XVIII we know next to nothing about. We also know that Hantei the XIX retired in 650. So that means the Leatherworkers got their name after 616 but before 650. The Unicorn did not return until 815. This means Leather was in use enough in Rokugan for a profession to be named after it and for that profession to have found its niche in the caste system for at least 200 years before the Unicorn returned. This discounts the theory that the Unicorn are the ones who made leather acceptable in the Empire.
>>
>>53747341
>There are eta leatherworkers, so presumably heimin and hinin do use leather even before the Unicorn
It's a direct fact that samurai did not use leather before the Unicorn returned. It's also a direct fact that there were eta leatherworkers before that. Eta, specifically, because leatherworking is dirty and the material is spiritually dirty before and after being processed, which is why no samurai used it.
>>
>>53747341
>This discounts the theory that the Unicorn are the ones who made leather acceptable in the Empire.

Not really. Just because the lower castes made use of it, or even just the lowest cast, does not mean it was acceptable for use by samurai. It just means it was used before the Unicron's return.

They don't cover their heads all the time, just the rest of them. And even then, it's not all the time, just when it's practical. If you're in court, you're likely to only see the tops of necks and the occasional wrist and ankle. Mori Ranmaru was the personal bodyguard of the infamous warlord Oda Nobunaga, and even during times when he was alive he was noted to be an extremely attractive man who was involved in nanshoku (increasing their closeness and loyalty by having homosexual relations) with his lord and was famous both for his skill in battle and his absolute loyalty to Nobunaga.

Generally he gets drawn as a highly androgynous character in most modern Japanese media to the point of most frequently being voiced by women due to his famous homosexual relationship with Nobunaga Oda.
>>
Okay, since L5R has some nip-knowers; what's with Japanese characters from older eras having that "-maru" suffix in their names a lot?
>>
>>53752754
It's a very old Japanese naming practice.
Infant mortality was as high in Japan as it was everywhere else, and so parents would give their children "placeholder" names that were generic to not invite bad luck until they came of age and they got their "adult" name.

The "-maru" part means "circular", but literally in reference to the shape of a toilet, to show that this person is literally "crappy" and thus the gods wouldn't kill such an unworthy son.
People with lots of kids would give them names like "Ichirou" (First Son) and then just go up the numerical scale for every new one they had, again to not provoke the god's ire and take them away before they reached adulthood.
>>
>>53752367

Hello there
I'm player and DM of the table RPG and the DM on my usual table just announced he was going to start a new campaign so to get new characters ready.

I think it's the right time now that I know his setting pretty well and have played almost every clan to start snowflaking all over the place : I've heard the real life story of Kuru-san Yasuke, the african samurai that was the bodyguard of Nobunaga Oda, ho was a slave brought by the Jesuits in Japan. When Oda became fascinated with the man (he had never seen one like this before), the Jesuits gave him as a gift. When Oda realized how skillful and intelligent he was, as well as strong, he made him samuraï.

I want to know, how would you adapt the story to L5R ? How could Kuru-san arrive in Rokugan, by which means ? Who would be interested in him enough to ask the Emperor the authorization to give him a daisho ?

When does the game take place, around the time of the colonies or one of the two instances the unicorn clan returned to rokugan makes it possible to have a fully foreign samurai.
In most of the above instances, he'll be a blood ritualed Unicorn clan but for example Singh was a person from the ivory kingsom becoming a mantis.
The two other instances of gajin becoming samurai was Tsi, who impressed the emperor so much he became a samurai (minor family) and then parts of the tortoise clan at its founding (but very unlikely to recruit more foreigners later)

>Buckwheat is not wheat, is not related to wheat, and isn't even a cereal.

Dude at least inform people what makes them wrong.

Buckwheat, not to be confused with another crop commonly known as wild buckwheat (which is something else entirely), is closer to rhubarb and isn't a grass at all. The seeds get harvested and turned to flour. Sometimes gets used as a barley or other gluten-based grass as a gluten free alternative (for those with celiac disease, gluten allergies, as well as fuckfaces who buy into meme diets). Also if you eat a lot of buckwheat, it is possible (though as far as I know, uncommon) that sunlight sensitivity will develop, to the point where you get rashes. People can also be allergic to buckwheat, like pretty much anything else.

No, you might he right.
>>
>>53763887
You can declare up to two attacks a turn.
>>
>>53763934
Yeah, but the attackers/defenders are not declared simultaneously. In old L5R you just declared an attack and infantry assigned first then cavalry assigned afterwords. As a 'corn player I could always attack where defenses were weak or even non-existent. In new L5R you declare an attack, say it is military or political, what ring it is, and which province the battle is at and go.
>>
>>53763887
Well you're in luck because we can answer that question right now -- traits don't do anything, we have direct confirmation of that. They're just anchors for other cards to reference (e.g. For Shame!). Unicorn will get their movement and combat shenanigans from card abilities (such as what Border Rider and Shinjo Outrider have), not from a keyword.
>>
>>53764067
Wrong. The Sincerity trait does something. In specific Sincerity grants a drawn card when the personality leaves play.
>>
>>53764148
Sincerity isn't a trait. It's a keyword. It's in a different section of the card, too.

This is how it works in literally every LCG. It shouldn't surprise you that it works this way in L5R. And again, we have direct confirmation from FFG that traits don't do anything.

>>
>>53767103
Neither of which are any more affected by Pilgrimage than any other clan.

It's not a clan-hate card, it's just a good generic defensive card. It basically means that you have to break the province in order for your attack to have mattered, and that's rough.

Staffs rank 5 Mastery, Eyes of Nanashi and Machi-Kanshisa. +1k1 on all attack rolls and a free knockdown maneuver every time you hit.

Worth it for a weird staff ronin build? Sure, you don't get simple attacks without blowing Void and your damage is ass, but it seems like it could be mildly useful in setting up enemies for the rest of the party and robbing them of actions.
>>
>>53767765
It gets free knockdown vs two legs sooner than the Kikage Zumi, so it has that going for it.

Maybe if you're allowed to use the Generic Ronin as a base school with ronin paths, you can convince the GM to let you change it to "You may also spend a Void Point to make a melee attack with a machi-kanshisa as a Free Action once per round" when you hit rank 4, provided you take the Machi-Kanshisha as your new SAA weapon. Bonus; Generic Ronin Rank 4 allows spending void for damage with that weapon.

Purist players in a nutshell. If they removed all mentions to Shadowlands and the Mantis in this new game I'm willing to put money on the table people like you would start ranting against the Scorpion and how they were added as an extra faction outside the classic core set and they "destroy the setting".
>>
>>53781479
I would say it'd be more the Crab or Phoenix.
Crab because, without the Shadowlands, what point is there in having this culture of BIG GUIZ OMG GUISE who are rude, crude, and pragmatic when there's the Ikoma and Matsu of the Lion, the Daidoji of the Crane, and the less political Scorpion for that.
Whereas the Phoenix are the "MAGIC DUDES WIZZERDS LEWL BRAH" as well as "plz no bully i r just a scholar (read: nerd). Every clan, even the Crab has its badass wizards and nerds (Kuni), and you may as well get rid of teh magics if you're axing the Shadowlands.

I don't really like the Mantis as a Great Clan, and the Spider were done in my opinion really, really fucking badly, and so I disagree that either of them ought to be a Great Clan in and of themselves. However, I do like them both if they're handled as Minor Clans or fringe elements of/outsiders to Rokugan, as pirate-merchants and evil wizard/warlord wannabes ought to be. Yes, I said I like the Spider and the Mantis and I don't like them. Fight me. Opinions.
>>
>>53781479
How do you find time to post with your aggressive cock sucking schedule?

Most players that hate the Spider were fine with the old Shadowlands Horde. Similarly most that hate the Mantis were fine with the old Yoritomo's Alliance. AEG just fucked both factions up so bad that they were irredeemable trash.
>>
>>53781479
Nobody wants them to remove the shadowlands. It's the Spider that suck balls.
Maybe you're new, but the Spider Clan is not synonymous with the classic shadowlands. In fact, it's pretty drastically different.
Incidentally, Yoritomo is one of the worst mary sues in the setting.
>>
>>53781831
Most of the Spider hate was caused by an error in how the Race for the Throne megagame was designed and some really bad story team decisions on how to implement results.

Horde didn't really work as a player faction.
>>
>>53782085
Nah, everyone thought the Spider were fucking retarded from the get go. Management just thought they were awesome. The idea that we could be rid of the Spider was why everyone jumped on the Dragon during the popularity contest portion of the Race for the Throne. But AEG went "lolnope" and pimped Marygotsue the entire next couple arcs.

As an old Horde player, they worked fine during Jade and Gold. I managed both military and enlightment decks with the Horde in addition to jank like Master of the Five and Walls of Otosan Uchi. I will agree giving them "Great Clan" mechanics is a good idea, keeping the mechanics the same across all factions makes sense. They won worlds a few times before being obsoleted by the Spider.

>>53782082
Yoritomo is mid tier. Doji Shizue and Daigotsu have him beat by miles. The former because she's literally Reeeeeeee Soesbee's insert. The later because he has way more setting deforming power than Yoritomo and got that power in a much shorter time.
>>
>>53782338
As clans, the Spider are head to head on who has more plot armour.
Pulling equal with the Phoenix in a Shugenja battle still makes me boil in rage.
Then again, Phoenix and Lion were the Worfs of the setting, so I shouldn't have been so surprised at the outcome.
>>

Spider and Mantis*

>>

>Nah, everyone thought the Spider were fucking retarded from the get go. Management just thought they were awesome. The idea that we could be rid of the Spider was why everyone jumped on the Dragon during the popularity contest portion of the Race for the Throne. But AEG went "lolnope" and pimped Marygotsue the entire next couple arcs.

Bullshit. Anyone claiming that they banwagoned Dragon to kill the Spider during the last leg of the Race is trying to project hate back to where it did not exist. The bandwagoning happened due to few wanting a Scorpion Emperor.

Also the "losing" clan was always going to get a "redemption or dissolution" story arc during Emperor. If it Spirituality score had been slightly different Mantis would have been the clan to "lose" and if Scorpion won it was going to be Dragon.

>>53782472
>As clans, the Spider are head to head on who has more plot armour.

Despite all the claim of "plot armor" Spider did not actually have very much. Most Spider wins were the result of Tournament choices or other player based events.

Onyx was a brand mandate to go back to the Emperor versus the Shadowlands for 20th anniversary rather than a Spider cock sucking.
>>
>>53782730
And the Spider got those tournament wins because AEG was fellating them so hard that it leaked onto card text.
>>
>>53782730
Many of their wins were literally the result of other factions succeeding and the Spider getting their win tacked on.
Going back to empire vs shadowlands was handled by making the Spider take control of both.
They had major favoritism from someone at AEG. Maybe the marketing department erroneously believing they were the most popular faction, maybe the writers.
>>
>>53782338
Hordes work thematically as a faction and if, implemented with unity of mechanics with the clans, pose no game play problems.

The issue is the tournament-win-determines-story structure, since hordes are a faction dedicated to the destruction of the setting itself, and their plot influence absolutely should not be left to essentially chance.

Not that the tournament-to-story structure was ever implemented well in any other case either, but that's neither here nor there.
>>
>>53782877

Even on the forums, the Mantis player were joking about not knowing what defeat means, which was twice as funny due to them getting one broken stronghold after the other.
The first "loss" they had in lore was against the Crane in Ivory and even that wasn't really a loss as much as it was a ceasefire due to a certain mad dragon.
>>
Sooo... I am making a ronin duellist based around the concept of the traditional warrior pilgrim walking around beating famous dudes to raise his glory.

Would a ronin walking around beating famous Great Clan duellists inevitably lead to blood feuds and shit? Because everything I read about ronin seems to indicate you can get fucked at any moment unless the emperor or someone decides to sponsor your raggedy ass.
>>
>>53785079
playing a ronin duelist is an odd proposition for a few reasons.

1) Duels are usually fought over something. Typically over some insult or accusation.
2) Ronin are status 0, and thus basically everyone outranks them, so its really rough for it to be acceptable for a GC samurai to say yes to a duel, let alone GC samurai that are already famous for being duelists
3) You'll probably just get war declared on you and get merked.
>>
>>53785079
>>53785181
You absolutely can get fucked at any moment, but duelists will duel each other for the contest. A ronin hoping to get sport duels had better build up a good reputation first, though. You're way more likely to get competitive duels if you're known to keep your word and generally be an honorable person. Dueling in public also helps, since the other guy can't get a bunch of his friends to gang up on you or call you a liar if there's a bunch of samurai witnesses around.
>>
>>53785315
It's also worth noting that a lot of the 'ronin' on warrior pilgrimages are actually clan samurai travelling anonymously, and therefore still have support if things go wrong.
>>
>>53785181
Pretty sure dudes duel for no reason other than to test their skills. The Cran/Dragon rivalry basically stems from "bro I could totally kick your ass" and there is an entire disadvantage centered around dudes showing up to kick your ass because you happen to be a dude from a village that used to be famous for duelists.
>>
>>53785079
Are you just being a dude that loves duels? Or do you have a deeper motivation in mind?
Hell, you could go with that disadvantage where you're from a village famous for duels (maybe you have a distinctive appearance too) and thus it isn't that you go out and challenge these dudes to duels all the time, but that some people challenge you frequently and thus you build a reputation as a wandering dude of fuck-your-shit-up whom the Great Clan samurai wish to test their mettle against.

Or maybe you're a disgraced Hida or Matsu or something who's got zero face and even less of a fuse.
>>
>>53785579
Doesn't really matter if he intends to duel people or not, though. He'd gain Glory all the same and rumours would start flying. Whether you kill in self defense or not, you're still killing and the people left behind will still hold a grudge. That Akodo isn't going to be any less pissed because his brother challenged the filthy ronin rather than the other way around. All he'll see is a hobo pissing on his proud name.
>>
>>53785704
I disagree, I think it makes a big difference in his character. Just because the external forces are going to react the same way after the violence doesn't mean anon's character is going to be the same person regardless of why the violence starts.
>>
>>53785704
You know duels are commonly to first blood, right? It would be really, really odd if a duelist in it for the challenge killed all of his honorable opponents whow only wanyed to test their skill.
>>
>>53785818
Nevertheless, a lot of great clan samurai take non-lethal duels extremely seriously. Look at the Mirumoto and Kakita. And by that I mean the start of the feud and not the actual deathmatch.
>>
>>53786332
That feud was still respectful enough that it produced the collaboration that led to the creation of the influential Thousand Years of Steel katas. Dueling is certainly serious business, but without the involvement of preexisting personal problems, the majority of samurai aren't going to become murderous over the subject.
>>
>>53771325
If you are Crane, get very good at backhanded compliments so that when they get angry they look foolish. If all else fails, have the Kakita duel them. This is known among the Crane as "diplomacy."

If Scorpion, be friendly and helpful to all while gathering or creating blackmail material to pressure them privately. If all else fails, use ninja. This, too, is called "diplomacy."
>>
>>53781301

Sorry, I fail to adhere to the old adage of "reading is useful" from time to time.
>>
>>53782472
>Pulling equal with the Phoenix in a Shugenja battle still makes me boil in rage.
Remember that time Tamori Shaitung set up a battle with the whole elemental council in just such a way that she could kick all their asses?
>>
>>53782472
The Phoenix are "best at magic" in the same way the Kakita are "best at dueling". Yes, they have a significant edge over everyone else, but they aren't unbeatable and definitely aren't infallible.
>>
>>53789003
Sure, but when you loose every war, it gets relatively maddening, even more so considering that every clan knows what happens should the Phoenix ever get REALLY serious.
Ask the Snake clan.
Hence the Worf title.
>>
>>53789003
considering duelings importance I really wish they would have refrained from crane superiority in the reboot.
>>
>>53789067
Wait to see what the Dragon clan gets.
>>
>>53785079
>Would a ronin walking around beating famous Great Clan duellists inevitably lead to blood feuds and shit?
If many samurai genuinely get pissed off, then you can expect to be mobbed and shanked in an alley at the behest of the least honourable one(s). Not all samurai are big on honour.

>>53785181
>Ronin are status 0, and thus basically everyone outranks them, so its really rough for it to be acceptable for a GC samurai to say yes to a duel, let alone GC samurai that are already famous for being duelists
It's not a strict "must be equal rank", as much as it is "must be within a few ranks, or the challenged samurai can ignore the challenge and you look foolish."

>>53785315
>Dueling in public also helps, since the other guy can't get a bunch of his friends to gang up on you or call you a liar if there's a bunch of samurai witnesses around.
Duelling in public helps with your reputation. It won't help with salving their pride when you win, which can mean making enemies. Again, standard honour ranks are 4-5, and samurai do vary from the standard.
>>
>>53789063
Every clan wrecks shit when they get serious. Except maybe the Crane. They're too invested in the non-serious side where they can hide under the Emperor's skirt.

The Lion stomp face whenever they feel like ignoring the Emperor and destroy a minor clan, the Crab stomped face when they dropped everything to march north, the Dragon stomp face when Togashi decides to intervene somewhere, the Phoenix stomped face with the Snake, and the Unicorn could stomp face if they were smarter about it.
>>
>>53788074

Here's a thought: how would the Dangerous Beauty advantage differ in fluff between Crane and Scorpion?
>>
>>53789341
Not much...Scorpion just flaunt it more.
>>
>>53789604

I had in my mind that Crane are "cute" and Scorpion are "sexy", but what you said makes sense.
>>
>>53789341
>>53789758
Why should it vary from 'you look as though you have Scorpion blood in your lineage'?
>>
>>53790312

Distinctiveness, I suppose.
>>
>>53789341
Dangerous Beauty has nothing to do with the Scorpion outside of them apparently being beautiful more often and the discount on buying it. A Dangerous Beauty Matsu doesn't have to look like a Shosuro to be incredibly attractive.
>>
>>53790312
Because it's not a defining trait of the Scorpion, just something they take advantage of more often than others.
Dangerous Beauty also implies that you move a certain way and take all the small opportunities you get to show off how good you look.
>>
>>53790545
But if a Matsu looks like a Shosuro she'd be really bland. I know that isn't the point but it is the Bayushi that are generally the lookers in the Scorpion. The Shosuro are still recovering from centuries of identity stealing via the Lying Darkness.
>>
>>53789341
Nothing. The same way a Daidoji with silent doesn't fluff any different than a Shosuro with silent. Dangerous beauty just means that they're attractive and they know how to use it to their advantage.
>>
>>53790631

It boils down to the Doji and the Bayushi.

Can someone quit being a samurai? Got a concept for a character where he was a young samurai who quit so he could be with a peasant woman. I was thinking she was some kitsune who when he found out, ran away, and now he claims he was bewitched but really just wants to find his wife.
>>
>>53792040
If you are ronin, it wouldn't be hard to slip down the ladder. But a Clan Samurai would likely be hunted down and either re-educated (read had the foolishness beaten out of him) or just killed for blasphemy (moving up and down the caste ladder holds a lot of spiritual implications).

If you got away with it there'd be no going back. If you revealed your true identity as a samurai you'd be in trouble for the reasons mentioned above. Also as a peasant you are legally allowed to own the primary mark of a samurai, his daisho, so keeping the daisho after going peasant would get you killed as well.

In short, your idea doesn't really work in the setting.
>>
>>53792185
I think I misworded it I meant going from clan samurai to ronin, but I understand. What about a samurai who was thought killed in action and nursed back to health and fell in love, only to go back to his clan after he's healed.
>>
>>53792549
Going Ronin is generally a one-way street with a few exceptions, like going a warrior's pilgrimage, the musha shugyo. Depending on the situation your former clansmen might view you as kill on sight for your betrayal.

Falling in love during a convalescence...an Earth 2, Insight 1 samurai (a common starting PC) heals three wounds/day and has a total of 38 wounds. Therefore with no medical assistance, he'd heal from 1 wound remaining to full in 13 days. If he gets medical attention he'd back on his feet quicker and if he has any sense of clan loyalty would want to be getting home ASAP. Even if he's naturally healing in a week he should be relatively mobile and should be trying to report in, if only to get some attention from a shugenja. In any case, no one is going to give a shit who he's in love with as long as he does his duty, marries who his clan tells him to marry, and sires a reasonable number of children with his wife.
>>
>>53792549
That works fine, take the true love disadvantage and you are set. Just know that marriage and am honest relationship are impossible, and they you will still have to get married and make babies for honor.
