I'd build robots, because the idea of a slave race is stupid. To make them "naturally enslaved" you'd need to make them mentally deficient, and once you did that they wouldn't be fit for anything but manual labor (negating the economic argument) and you probably wouldn't even want to fuck them anymore (negating the hentai argument).

Readily available robotic units that can be modified to adapt to any given task, they require nothing but maintenance and instruction. They don't ask questions and never tire!

By hiring them, paying them just enough to give the illusion of happiness but not enough to escape the economic burden of renting their corporate apartment from me and calling them a salaried employee.

They don't shit everywhere or need food either. If you're advanced enough to genetically engineer a slave race you'll never need to make them.

You could try engineering them to be deficient in an important enzyme and then feeding them that in their daily work lunch. Their residence quarter rations don't contain the enzymes so if they don't work, they'll sicken and die.

You could also add mild doses of drugs to their work rations to make them enthusiastic to return. Opiates in their dinner, cocaine in their breakfast and lunch which are only served at the work site.

Then you have to worry about intelligence because anything smart enough can work out what you've done and how to deal with it. Education can help keep them in their place, religion works well too.

Why? There's no reason to do that. The whole point of slaves is doing the work you don't want, and now that means grinding through engineering and programming instead of hoeing fields. Robots can do the physical grunt work, but unless you have AI you need slaves for the mental grunt work.

Use that advanced genetics and future neurosurgery to induce artificial loyalty. Drugs can run out, religions can be disproved, but a properly mindwired slave will be toiling for you for free even in a society that bans slavery.
