Posting from last thread for a bit more recommendations before I make my decision
Two questions for you anons:
Thinking of getting terrain and I have a few ideas. Should I go with
>Imperial Sector board and terrain, start expanding from there
>one of the AoS realm of battle boards, get a Garden of Morr or Sigmarite Mausoleum and start expanding from there
or possibly
>make my own board (even though I'm absolute shit at that) and get some GW terrain to put on that
Also, what could/should I use to make some kitbashed or proxy Tzeentch Chaos Spawn? Fitting in with my TS optional.
Thanks in advance!

I like power level too, but here's the conundrum-

There is a tournament at my local store. They decided to use power level instead of points.

I play Deathwatch. A unit of veterans is power level 9, which is more than tacticals, more than sternguard, more than whatever equivalent marine veterans.

How many upgrades do I give them so I h aven't cheated myself, but how many upgrades do I give them before I become "that guy?"

For example, I could run every dude with a combi-plasma and an inferno pistol if I felt like, adding 37 points per model. If I don't do that, if I just run them with their boltguns, I am being punished.
>>
>>53671635
>We then took a second look at our lists. Though we both had power level 75, my list was about 1300 points, while his was well over 1700. Womp womp. So we play another game, trimming our lists down to only 1k points. This goes MUCH better.
>>
>>53671547

>>
In keeping with the theme of guessing, what sort of points values do we think some of the Forgeworld stuff is going to roughly have?

For instance, I am guessing that the Storm Eagle hull is going to remain roughly similar to the current points cost, with a full loadout clocking in at about 400pts
>>
>>53671677

Critique my list please!

Not designed to be win-at-all-costs, but I want to make an armored list that has a chance. It's an all-armored guard (counter-meta) that focuses on Manticore rocket artillery to either win or lose the game in the first couple rounds of shooting. The storm eagle rockets carried by them is among the most destructive non-LoW weapons in the game. The tanks are designed to be highly mobile and press the enemy, dump a lot of firepower into hordes, overwatch with heavy flamers, etc. Bane wolf to search and destroy tough TEQ things while the enemy thinks Pask is the real threat.

Ah okay, I heard Rhinos can be up to like 100+ points. That's kind of ridiculous considering the point difference between Chimeras and Rhinos last edition, you'd think Rhinos would be at like 70 points now because Chimeras are 93. How many points are Razorbacks now?

I feel bad for the last guy I played who was just finishing up his Gladius force at the end of 7th. No way he can run that many Razobacks and Rhinos in this new edition outside of like a 4000 point game.

Make your own and add terrain. Are you wanting a bunch of details and shit? Or just a board? If you have any kind of wood supply store around you, you can get some cut 2x2 squares out of some thin material like mdf, and use that. It's what I do. Then buildings and terrain I base up on something thick and sturdy to keep permanent, then set it up wherever I need it. GW tables look cool, but I can't justify that cost.
>>

It could be a strategy to push more diverse shit to the wave of new players they are probably expecting (and I think they will be getting). I honestly think it's the one that makes the most sense to come back and can have some character development (who BL would proceed to fuck up just like all the others).

I hear that. Our Taurox Primes are basically the Guard Razorback. More guns, more cost. Our run from like 96-130. My Demolisher with Lascannon and Multi-Meltas Runs 232, so I feel you on it eating up points. Thankfully we have some nice infantry stuff to counter that, but honestly sometimes I just want to field a mechanized force and not have to slam down 100 models to move around.

Haven't played any games yet, but I hear everything is notably harder to kill. Not sure how true that is. The few bat reps I've seen vehicles die pretty fast still.

I think conscripts are going to win a lot of games. Not by lasgunning down knights, but by just being to numerous to kill in a 6 turn game.

A lot of things struggle to kill more than a hand full a turn, and guard players can bring them by the bucket full.

Now that objectives are held by numbers guard can afford to just pit enough meat into the grinder that they can hold objectives.

3D3 damage sounds fine to me. More consistent than the rail gun, but doesn't have the same killshot mechanic. Less max damage than the Onager Neutron Laser and the same minimum damage, but the vanquisher has the longer range and can take extra supplemental guns.

To keep up with the onager without surpassing it, I'd recommend a reroll vs toughness. That'll give the cannon a 75% success rate vs S8 armor, and the whole reason I like the Vanquisher is that it was a reliable penetrator.

No increase in BS, though. We got characters for that.

Going by older lore, tyranids cant be stopped, currently they are a MASSIVE threat but chaos has suddenly taken the front seat and NO ONE is worth anything compared to chaos now
>>
>>53672549
There are probably less Daemons than there are Orks, Tyranids or even human beings. The number of them of course grows as their gods grow more powerful, but if Chaos starts wiping out humanity or the aliens wipe out most of humanity there will be less of them, as the gods will have to start pulling some of their daemons back into themselves to survive as they grow weaker.
In addition to this, Daemons require help to enter realspace outside of places where the barrier to the warp is thin, so even if you cant beat Daemons you can beat their friends and that beats the Daemons.

Daemons could win, but that doesn't mean they can't lose.

Power Levels? Let's take a look.

A unit of 50 Conscripts is 6 Power Levels.
A Company Commander is 3 Power Levels.

A Knight Crusader (best anti-conscript Knight) is 27 Power Levels.

You need one Commander per 2 Conscript units, thus for every 2 Conscript units plus Commander you are spending 15 Power Levels.

Equal numbers would be:

170 Conscripts and 2 Company Commanders - 27 PLs

1 Knight Crusader - 27 PLs
(keep in mind no matter what equipment you give this thing, it has the same Power Level)

*****

Comparing this to points? Lets make an anti-Conscript killing Knight.

Knight Crusader - 320
Avenger Gatling Cannon - 95
Rapid Fire Battle Cannon - 100
Heavy Stubber - 4
Heavy Stubber - 4
Ironstorm Missile Pod - 16
TOTAL: 539 points

And the Conscripts:
50 Concripts - 150
50 Conscripts - 150
50 Conscripts - 150
Company Commander - 30
TOTAL: 480 points

The minimum unit price of a new Conscript squad is 60 to get 20 guys. So we can't afford a fourth unit. We could get another Commander, to issue orders to the third unit, but seems pretty wasteful.

********

So if you play with Power Levels, you get an extra 20 Conscripts, essentially.

>They read as Ahriman, but better!

What can be done:
>Why were they exiled?
>Why did they decide to go for the Black Library?
>Why did the Harlequins even assist them? That's fair OOC of them.

I could see a Thousand Sons band attempting to find a way to break Tzeentch's chains over them by going to other Gods

>Assuming the knowledge that Cegorach can rescue Harlequin's souls from Slaanesh is knowable in-universe.

Overall 3/10. Core concept can be salvageable, but you can do better.

Nope, no roll. Although I suppose you could, but no point rolling a dice that goes from 1-6 and hoping for a seven.

Neutron Lasers are one gun for one Admech tank, so not exactly as available as Plasma, but it's Heavy (the tank ignores the -1 BS from heavy weapons, too) BS3+ often rerolling ones and the stats are D3 shots S10 AP-4 D6 damage, count rolls of 1 and 2 damage as 3 instead.
Short of superheavy tanks, a whole bunch of Deepstriking melta and Deathstrikes I don't think there's anything that surpasses it, and it's also pretty tough, only 150 points and has 6 Bolter shots you can throw around just for a cherry on top.

>>
>>53672813
A Knight has a base circumference of ~16"
That means given the new rules for combat, you can get ~35 Conscripts into close combat with it under ideal conditions.

If you put a Priest and an Officer in range, they have 140 close combat attacks per turn, assuming you order Fix Bayonets.

140 CC attacks
46.2 hits
7.3 wounds
2.43 unsaved wounds
>>

They are 20 power for 15 if we were wanting them to match up with the DC, in numbers, anyway. That's 14d6 autohits at S4 AP-2, and d6 more at S3 AP-2. However, we could get up to 20 of them for 26 power total.

Alright. Thanks! This was the kind of feedback I was looking for. I figured part of the reason Ahriman was having trouble accessing the Black Library was a combination of arrogance and refusal to ask for the assistance of the Harlequins. They were exiled for their deep interest in Ahriman's studies and the nature of the Rubric, as a precaution taken against repeating that fiasco. The Harlequins saw a situation similar to the Eldar at the time of Slaanesh, and saw a chance to spread the influence of Cegorach by recruiting from Chaos itself - severing their souls from the Dark Gods just as theirs were.

The DI box costs as much as two Start Collecting boxes in my country. I would sell the NuMarines half for half of the box cost for sure so it ends up I'm paying for DG half like for SC! Box.
The question is - what will give me a better army base? If I will run DG I would just buy 2x DI box and sell the NuMarines. If I would choose T'au or Nids I would buy a SC! box and another SC! or Armoured Assault box so costs are same

Pls don't bully - I like all three factions same but want to know if any of this options is definitely better than other budget- and point-wise. I want to stick with 1000 points games

I know the old Tyranid book said Khorne got nothing from spilled Tyranid ichor, but in KDK there was a Warband that used Warp Talons to tear into a Tyranid Hive fleet, and spilt so much Tyranid "blood" (ichor) that they summoned Daemons.

No, that concept is based on THEIR actions supporting the god, not the person actually dying.

What chaos believers think going on isn't supported by any other text in 40k. Even Libre Chaotica has that only through a pact with the gods can you lose yourself to the gods. Issue is, they commonly mask said pacts.

Eldar are the only innate species "doomed" on death to a fate.

Khorne gains favor from bloodshed because he likes bloodshed, not that he eats the enemies. Slaanesh may feed off the torture of it's enemies...but not because it eats their soul. Nurgle feeds off the suffering caused by his diseases, not from the act of eating the sufferers soul.

I never said they 'eat' the souls... Liber Caotica is old fluff, Dawn of War is more recent and supports me. For example Kyras taunts the Eldar telling them their souls will go to Khorne instead of Slaneesh when he kills them. You'd think a Champion of Chaos would know a thing or two about how it all works, specially when it directly concerns his ability to please his gods.

The Chaos Gods are BOTH souls and the emotions that they are charged with. The warp in the end is just a 'sea of souls' where the ones that had certain strong emotions gravitated towards each other and became sentient.

To be fair,
(In 40K)
When anyone dies they go into the Warp. There they either dissolve or if strong enough they roam around. However Daemons can eat said souls.

So I can imagine that if someone dies to a Chaos attack the Warp side is probably swimming with Daemons, so as soon as the soul enters it is caught / eaten

>implying Orks are anything like the Tau/Necrons to the Ruinous Powers
I mean, the only one of the big Four who can actually get the boyz attention is ol' Khorne Nurgle ended up getting worshiped by Feral boyz through an icon of Nurgle one time by accident (they thought they were worshiping Gork n' Mork... somehow), but they're feral boyz, and they're dumb gits even by Ork standards, so it doesn't really count. There's a some canon Freeboota Stormboyz-types who decided they like Khorne's doctrines and worship him AND Gork n' Mork.

Only reason Gork n' Mork don't really get upset over this (along with Khorne keeping Tuska Daemon-Killa around) is because Khorne's a war god like them as far as I can tell anyway

The other Ruinous Powers?
Uhm, if Tuska Daemon-Killas Waaagh!! INTO the Eye of Terror (still looks insane every time I type it), Orks don't exactly fall to Tzeentch's scheming/Slaanesh's temptations/whatever Nurgle's got cookin' in his pot at the moment.

If you run a pile of gaunts into my firing lines and I gun them all down its because I literally rolled all 6s with bonus mortal wounds somewhere.

Tau shooting in 8th is comparatively average, points for damage. And they don't have a fight phase, or a psychic phase, their shooting phase is unimpressive. They do have some mobility and have gained some tankiness, but overall every battle report I've seen has been brain-dead charging through open terrain leading to one or two overwatch casualties, and about a dozen dead Tau.
>>
>>53674047
>That's a buff for orks, their squishy infantry is too cheap to care about a dozen casualties and kicks ass in melee.
Kicks ass in melee is an understatement.
If a mob of standard foot-slogging boyz gets into melee, they have a bunch of special rules that give them more than double the base 2 attacks they used to have (if I understand things correctly anyway). We're talking 5-6 attacks under the right conditions.

The thing about that is that if they don't camp, they can't shoot, because of movement penalties to shooting.

And if they can't shoot, they can't do anything at all.

And when they do shoot, they barely do anything at all.

Tau lost a huge amount of mobility, have average shooting, no assault, and no psychic.

Since Orkz 'WAAAGH! field makes anything they believe come true (if enough greenskins believe it), are Orks actually capable of perma-killing Daemons? No 'get rekt, go back to Warp and sulk for a bit, come back in a century or two' shtick, just straight-up DEAD?

KDK charged turn 1, got 4 KP and half the T'au in melee. Then breachers went man-mode, blew up berserkers at close range then charged and killed the herald. While the Broadside 360 no-scoped the chaos lord on a lucky overwatch.

Markerlights are best if you try to focus fire on a single unit. They'd be fluffy if you could use markerlight tokens to target characters.

That was in reply to the argument that Tau had to be stationary to avoid penalties for movement. One of the benefits from Markerlights specifically cancels those penalties.

As far as Markerlights as a whole, they're now cheaper and easier to place. The firing unit can now benefit from its own MLs, so the 3pt ML on a FW 'ui is potentially a very good deal for the sweet reroll-1's. They don't do as insane BS-boosting, but they are exceptional at focusing down larger targets due to multi-unit use.
>>
>>53674596
>>3 Bloodcrushers wiped 4 (might have been 3?) crisis suits on the charge

Dedicated melee units are fucking brutal versus anything in this version.

Also, i hate "does something on a To Wound of 6" kind of rules, as they make units stupidly effective against high Toughness units for no reason.

Actually, some sort of "does x on roll of 2" could be good anti-horde mechanic, i guess.

BS5+ 48" Heavy d3 S7 AP-1 D2 on a W1 platform for 17 ppm

I think they're good, but I'm conflicted. One plus is that you roll all the shot numbers with one dice so you can effectively reroll for the whole squad, which is nice, but is it worth giving up on almost 30 boyz?

>>
>>53674877

Nah, it's a different line.

Pathfinders get promoted to stealth suits then Ghostkeels.

Fire warriors can become crisis or broadside, then a few move on to Riptide or variants.

Farsight was intentionally put in a Broadside when his commanding officers knew damn well he wasn't suited for it, because they saw his command potential and wanted him to become more rounded and less all-impulse all the time.
>>
>>53674898
Maybe we'll get a clarification in our codex. But I'd imagine that a man is under his own command.
>>
>>53674901
That was 6 flamers, 20 hits, 9 wounds, 4 damage. The average for that scenario would be 21 hits, 9 wounds and 3 damage. If anything the crisis got slightly lucky.

No, not when it comes to ANY competitive game. There is only two categories: overpowered, and gimped. Things go into the gimped category if they can mathematically be proven to have less performance than anything in the overpowered category. Breachers are only truly effective within 5 inches, and are ineffective in assault. They have access to -a- transport, but not a cheap one.

Pretty much their only genuinely high powered trait is Overwatch, and even then it's not so bad if you start 6+ inches away.

They have a good -potential- output under absolutely optimal conditions, but almost no ability to actually apply it.

The broadside can't contest objectives and is heavily pidgeonholed into its AT role, so it's not replacing the Riptide in any way. The Riptide is replacing the Riptide, it's just not absurdly good at its job and everything else too anymore.

It's also fucking expensive for two lascannon shots. At least it's pretty good at murdering tanks. And stupid characters standing in the open.

Really? Sure, they were always good, but that's a pretty slow 300 points that suffers from AT guns because they're vehicles.
Oddly, the best counter to Mechanicus I've found so far is more Mechanicus. Neutrons fuck up Kastelans properly, Phosphor rips though Skitarii on a 2+ wound no cover, Arquebi punish repairmen and Dunecrawlers sit there and take an absolute pounding as always.

Hell, with the new rules Dunecrawlers take less damage than Land Raiders from Neutron Lasers and Lascannon, because 5++ reroll ones. Sure, less wounds, but also half the price.

I can't believe I bitched about the new Mechanicus when it showed up. I will continue to be mad about my Rangers and Vanguard having their respective tricks diluted and the loss of stupid BS on everything, but they were fucking kind to the rest of them, hey. Even Infiltrators became throwaway horde-slaughterers and countercharge stall units, -1Ld is basically a free extra kill a lot of the time if you sniped Commissars with, say, the S7 AP-2 D3D Sniper Rifles we have as special weapons. The only outright useless unit seems to be Rusties since they let Fulgurites One-Charge Kill fucking Magnus.

I doubt we're exactly the new Eldar, but I personally think based on what I've read we've pretty much kept our spot as right at the top of Tier 2, exactly in the cushty spot which encourages interesting builds and fluffy rules in later expansions without inducing total hatred.

Strictly speaking, any unit can contest objectives now, but yes, broadside is bad at since it's just the one model.

OTOH if you look at other armies you don't get two lascannons on that tough a platform for less than a decent handful of points.

What? Literally any unit can contest objectives, unless it specifically has a rule stating otherwise (I haven't seen such yet).
>>
>>53675995

>The broadside can't contest objectives

People keep bringing this up, but I've never found playing to mission in maelstrom very important. Kill kill kill, and if you kill enough you'll limit your opponent's tactical options and win.

Yeah go for the objectives when they card tells you to do something you don't need to go out your way for, but otherwise every moment your opponent wastes on trying for extra points is time he's not killing you.

I mean, it's not going to contest shit with 5" move and one model. One of the strength of the Riptide was its ability to zip around to grab unattended objectives (or block path to them), and the Broadside isn't going to do that anytime soon.
>>
>>53676030
No but seriously i wanna know what happened. All i am seeing is that a chaos lord took a Railside to the face.

Mathammer enthusiasts: I'm working on making my own excel chart for expected wounds from various matchups, and I'm wondering how you guys deal with variable damage-die, like a d3. My first thought was to simply use the average, and cap it at a number equal to the wounds of the target, but that runs into problems where the target has multiple wounds, but fewer wounds than max the weapon can deal. For example, a 2W model being hurt by a D:d3 weapon will only be one-shot 2/3rds of the time, due to the case of rolling a 1. This seems like it requires a moderately complicated If-statement to handle correctly.

No fire points anymore. Open topped vehicles have specific rules in their sheets for occupants shooting.
>>
>>53676162
If the average damage is less than the wounds of the model, multiple the posr-save wounds by damage. If it's equal, that's kills, not wounds . If it's more, then multiply the chance of a roll that's equal to or greater than the models wounds and you get kill chance again.

Simple.

>>
>>53676278
What if your army doesn't have snipers?
>>
>>53676156
That's about it. A KDK vs Tau game was streamed and the KDK were in good position to win (half the Tau army dead, the other half in charge range) when that win got cancelled by the Broadside going crazy. It landed two overwatch shots on the Chaos Lord charging it (killing him) and then executed the wounded Bloodthrister with a 6-to-wound, 6-to-damage max damage shot.

So the Tau won and some special need kid decided to sperg out about it.
>>
Couldn't you have average damage be less than the wounds of the model, but maximum damage more, such as a d6 vs W5?

Agree with who? No one is dumb enough to think Broadsides are the new riptide. Especially when hammerheads are overall better and you can make a Longstrike Wing.
>>
>>53674898
Under their command is fluff not crunch
>>
>>53676359
Yep. If that's the case you instead multiply post saves by the chance of a lethal wound being rolled. This gives the chance of not just wounding, but KILLING, a model with a given shot. It might not be the metric you want but it's still useful.

+6" from a pulse accelerator, and why wouldnt you bring one for your breacher teams?
>>
>>53676490
I wrote one myself a while ago. Start with the equal test, then higher, then lower, than twice as high, then half. Reduces the number of 'if' statements significantly.

>>
>>53676565
Unless my math is wrong, it's 342. 162 for the 9 marines, 135 for the warpflamers they're equipped with and 45 for the Aspiring with Force Stave + IBP. 348 if you take the warpflame pistol, and you could get to 340 if you model on a force sword instead of stave.

Either way, still a garbage way to deal with conscripts. Rubric Marines are good (well, significantly better than they were in 7th), but warpflamers aren't cutting it without some help.
>>
>>53676526
Chugging through my if-statements, I think I'm just down to the damage stat. I think I need to add an extra column for attacker simply to define whether the damage stat is fixed or a die.

I don't think so, it doesn't say it gets another movement phase, it says it can "move". Move is an action, advancing replaces move, you do it instead.
>>
>>53677575
There's no replacing. Advancing is just something you can do while you move.
>When you pick a unit to move in the movement phase, you can declare that it will Advance.
