Don't bother.
>>
>>53630040
Is it that bad or is OP just asking in the wrong place?
>>
>>53630040
Says who? From what I have seen it has very interesting background system.

And it can't be worse than d20 Conan.
>>

You would think so, wouldn't you?
Surely a new publisher avoid the pitfalls killing earlier incarnations? People learn, right?
No, they don't.

Should I grab Barbarians of Lemuria instead?

It uses the 2d20 system, which might actually be worse than the 1d20 system. The fluff is presented nicely, and there's nothing wrong with the cultures and backgrounds, but the core game mechanics are a pile of hot garbage. They revolve almost entirely around three kinds of abstract narrative points, and heavy metagaming is expected at almost every turn, so it's pretty hard to get into the story. For example, you can dodge or parry any number of times per round, but each time you do so you give more Doom points to the GM, so you as a player are incentivized to not defend yourself for reasons that make no sense in-story. Another example: when you roll better than you need to on a skill check, you add more points to the Momentum pool, so you want to roll as many easy and inconsequential skill checks as you can get away with.

>you give more Doom points to the GM

Oh Jesus, the FATE cancer has infected so many games now, it's tragic.
>>
>>53632393
2d20 is even worse than FATE because FATE is built from the ground up like a narrative game, with character motivations and personalities at the forefront. 2d20 is the worst of both worlds: it fails as both a simulation and a storytelling aid.

For true horror, contemplate this:
If they had gone with Fate, the game would probably have been significantly better. Fate at least leeches off a set of simple, functional mechanics.

The publisher suffers from an extreme case of Not Invented Here Syndrome. All of their licensed RPGs are shoehorned into the same system because it's their system. Consider this: they're using the exact same rules for Conan and for fucking Star Trek, two franchises that couldn't be more different from each other in tone and themes. Something is wrong there.

>>53632789
>>53632856
That is just asinine. Lament for Conan.
>>
>>53630967
Well, BoL is specifically tailored to pulp fantasy.
I'd go with RQ6 or Mythras. You don't need to jimmy the shoehorn much to fit Conan into that system.
>>
>>53631681
Fuck, the book looked nice.
>>
>>53630913
as someone who hasn't played any Conan RPG, can anyone bring me up-to-speed?
>>
>>53632393
what's wrong with FATE? played Spirit of the Century 2 or 3 times, it was just fine.
>>
>>53632856
>Not Invented Here Syndrome

You mean Golden Hammer Syndrome. NIH isn't really applicable here, especially since Conan is a licensed property to begin with. The problem isn't that Modiphius won't use any ideas they didn't invent; it's that they have this one idea they did invent and apply it to every single situation, even when it's wildly inappropriate.
>>
>>53637352
I'm not totally up to date, but you have an abysmal AD&D-campaign and Mongoose's not -completely- awful D20-hack. Pretty sure there is another one inbetween, but I can't remember.
Modiphius' new Conan-game just released, and it is an extra special cookie. It is like the worst of all possible worlds condensed into one clunky package.
The fluff is supposedly very good though. Same with some of the Mongoose-stuff.
>>
>>53638514
There's a few Howard specialists onboard it seems, so I guess the fluff's very good, yes.
I guess I'll have to tweak the system in some way to make it playable.
