What does /tg/ think of the Inheritance Cycle?
>>
Not good enough to be liked.
Not bad enough to be memed.
>>
>>53629031
Had potential to a good (good not great) series.
Author should have gotten an editor to knock some sense into him/get him to cut out all the stupid shit/do some research into how stuff like pre-gunpowder battles work.

As it is, the first one is a solid 7/10 the rest can be skipped.
>>
>>53629031
It's a good book series to get young readers into fantasy
>>
Pretty meh overall

Besides, everyone knows that Bartimaeus is the patrician's YA choice.
>>
Possibly the biggest waste of paper ever conceived by a non-government organization.
>>
>>53629031
>That image

Did he forget that he basically wrote out a scene like that close to the beginning of Eldest?
I remember him trying to flirt with a sorceress in a dwarven bar and Saphira objects to it.
>>
I was not surprised when I found out he was like four years old when he wrote it.
>>
>>53629060
>As it is, the first one is a solid 7/10 insomnia cure

I'm kind of jealous that it would probably take significant effort for me to write the most generic fantasy story to get as much money as this Pastrami guy did.

He stunningly became a worse writer in the later books, leaning more and more on overblown descriptions and purple prose. And the payoff of the struggle against Galbatorix is pretty much exactly what you would expect and nothing more. Just a very, very generic fantasy setting.

Oh my god.
I thought I was the only one who noticed.
The scene where Eragon is learning magic from the old elf is lifted directly from Garion learning how to use the W&W from Belgarath.
Down to the descriptions of how magic works, gathering energy from everything around you, and the old guy exclaiming "not from me!".
>>
>>53629031
There are a few things I think they did really right, or at least that I enjoyed
>Psychic magic AKA magic users being able to just completely destroy the memories and psyches of those less trained
>Energy cost and the ability to store energy in crystals for later use
>Heart-of-hearts in dragons being the source of their magic and them being able to retreat into them
>Magic Language and the rules concerning lying
>The nature of magic as it pertains to the language (e.g. "Protection from evil" and "Protection of evil" or whatever the mess-up was)
>The description of Galbatorix's sword, which for a dumb-ass kid, having white being equated to bleached bone was eye-opening

If you're a teenager with little knowledge of fantasy it's a completely fine introduction to the genre.
To anyone older/more familiar with fantasy it's shit because the the writing is shit and it is extremely derivative of other stories, while generally not doing anything interesting with what it steals.

>>53630927

Despite the memery of hatred, disgust, and general disregard for the creator's "hack writing", many anons really do honestly, deep down, love Star Wars.
>>
Very fucking mediocre YA books, even by YA standards, that got published only because the author had publishers for parents.
>>
Overall liked it as a kid that was just getting into fantasy, don't really like it as an adult because I now realize it's not very well written, but I still own the whole series and am probably going to have my fiance take them to her classroom for kids to borrow.

I sometimes think that it's unfair to compare Eragon to Star Wars since they both follow the Hero's Journey very closely, then I remember that:
>Dragon Riders are basically Jedi
>Brom is basically Obi-wan
>Galbatorix is basically Vader
>Arya is basically Leia
>Jeod is a ham-fisted Lando
>Murtagh is a very ham-fisted Han Solo
>Eragon literally joins the rebellion against the empire

At least Roran's chapters from Eldest were cool.
Shit, the whole series could have been about Roran being a Tiny Tim in a world full of magic and monsters and it would have been a way better read.

Read the following plot summary:
A boy of foggy origins lives with his uncle in a remote place of a vast empire headed by an evil Emperor and his right hand man, who was once prominent in an ancient order of guardians with mystical powers.
Through fate or luck, depending on your point of view, this boy comes into the possession of an object vital to a rebellion against the Empire; this object was inadvertently sent to him by a princess in the rebellion, who had attempted to send said object to an old man who once belonged to the same order of guardians as the Emperor’s right-hand man.
This boy seeks the old man to learn of the ways of this ancient order, but eventually has to return to his uncle’s farm, which, the boy finds, has been destroyed by fire, and his uncle killed. The boy then sets off with the old hermit, who also gives him a sword which belonged to his father. As they travel, they train. The boy meets up with a rogue who is full of surprises, but turns out to be fiercely loyal, for all his proclaimed selfishness. The boy also begins "seeing" a beautiful woman imprisoned and in need of help.
The boy decides that he needs to rescue her, even though he doesn't know her; further, he thinks of her only as beautiful. Long story short, the old hermit dies to protect the boy, the boy and the rogue help the beautiful damsel escape.
They then set off to the rebellion to give important information and return the object which the princess had sent the boy. They were followed by the Empire, and prepare for a giant battle that will either save the rebellion or annihilate them.
The boy proves his worth with heroics during the battle, but his crowning achievement is his destruction of a noun of much power that has the ability to destroy lots of things. The boy is aided in this by one of his friends, who arrives at precisely the right moment.
The boy is lauded a hero.
>>
>>53632461
The boy has a hallucination of a powerful master who can teach him more of the ancient order. The boy travels to the powerful master to learn the ways of the ancient order's mystical power. While there, he grows very powerful. While he is away, the Rebellion regroups in a new area.
Just when the boy is on a roll with his training, and has grown very powerful, he has a vision of his friends in great danger. He decides he must go to help them. His master warns him not to go. The boy promises that he will return. He leaves.
He finds his friends just in time and is able to distract the enemy so that his friends will remain safe. He finds out that his father was the right-hand man of the Emperor--his father was the one who betrayed the ancient order and helped kill them.
The boy is shocked and ultimately defeated, but not killed. He finds out that someone dear to him has been taken by evil people, and promises to find this person.
Now, is that the plot of Inheritance, or StarWars?

While there is A LOT of justified criticism you can pile on Paolini, this site isn't the best example. The article you posted is fine, but some of the rest are just blatant disagreements with how the details of the world should have worked out (like in the "Inconsistencies" page and "Character Development") or just the result of unscrupulous reading. Some of the worst Elf dicksucking I've ever seen in a work of fiction. Reading the second book especially you can just see how much the whole race exists just to be Chris's ideal self insert fantasy.
Even the main character starts to become one as he matures. There's even a whole preachy scene dedicated to him becoming an atheist vegetarian while living with the elves to show how euphoric and enlightened he's become.

Never finished the first book. This nets it my genuine 1/5 rating (or 1/10 if you prefer).

There are two things good writing must do: hook the reader and tell a good story. Whilst doing so you can also: introduce new plot threads, do character development (even in shorthand), and pretty much anything else.

Artemis Fowl instead tries to foist all of the worldbuilding, all of the character development, and even some of the story on us all in one giant information vomit. I had been intrigued when someone said it was "like Star Wars," but disgusted to find out they meant "sloppily done with a huge information dump up front."

That sort of thing is forgivable in cinema, but a high crime in literary fiction, even of the YA variety.

I think Gaiman said it like this: Show me, don't tell me. (but do have notes!)

He was literally brainwashed into it, that's whats weird. He gets his entire personality reworked just by seeing the demon babby, and the text makes it clear that's precisely what's happening.
Speaking of, the demon babby now has a hyper strong killing machine at her beck and call that literally can't say no to her, and she demonstrated all the maturity of the baby she physically resembles.
Remember, she was supposed to have the mind of an adult, and she still acts like an absolute Brat.

Breaking Dawn is a masterpeice of horror, even if Meyer didn't realise it

Oh boy is it time to talk about Rothfus again?

>It all began when Pat Rothfuss was born to a marvelous set of parents. Throughout his formative years they encouraged him to do his best, gave him good advice, and were no doubt appropriately dismayed when he failed to live up to his full potential.

>In high-school Pat was something of a class clown. His hobbies included reading a novel or two a day and giving relationship advice to all his friends despite the fact that he had never so much as kissed a girl. He also role-played and wrote terrible stories about elves. He was pretty much a geek.

>Most of Pat's adult life has been spent in the University Wisconsin Stevens Point. In 1991 he started college in order to pursue a career in chemical engineering, then he considered clinical psychology. In 1993 he quit pretending he knew what he wanted to do with his life, changed his major to "undecided," and proceeded to study whatever amused him. He also began writing a book....

>For the next seven years Pat studied anthropology, philosophy, eastern religions, history, alchemy, parapsychology, literature, and writing. He studied six different martial arts, practiced improv comedy, learned how to pick locks, and became a skilled lover of women. He also began writing a satirical advice column which he continues to this day: The College Survivial Guide. Through all of this he continued to work on his novel.

It definitely changes from the first book. I'll do a quick summary of the other four:

Book Two: Brother fucks up and releases a demon, the bigger forces at work are revealed (Good-aligned order of knights and Evil-aligned secret society), and characters become built up
Book Three: The Secret Society sends a plague on Fablehaven to try and force out an ancient artifact, the children gain more powers, battles rage and fantasy Theodore Roosevelt gets involved. Probably the best book of the series, because it's in the sweet spot of episodic adventures and overarching plot adventures.
Book Four: The Good aligned order starts kicking it into high gear to try and stop the secret society, try and grab the artifacts of other magiclife preserves, dragons and wizards start getting involved, twists happen.
Book Five: Both groups go head to head as the Secret Society's bid for power is close to finishing, the kids try and track down the last line of defense while all the major players throw down the gauntlet.

They got pretty good, all things considered.

>(somewhat nullified by the fact that it's told as kind of a sailor's story).
Honestly, it makes it worse.
Usually, an unreliable narrator gets employed in a manner where he subtly reveals which parts are misleading, intentionally or not.
Kvothe never does any of that. It's just left up to the reader to decide how much it's him or Rothfuss masturbating in their face

Well when Eragon goes to the Dagoba Syste- I mean the elven forest of Du Weldvenvarden and meets his new instructor Yod- I mean Oromis, he gets lessons on swordsmanship, magic, and philosophy. One of the exercises Oromis puts him through is telling him to meditate on a stump in the middle of the woods and "listen to the forest" with telepathy until he's "seen all there is to see". Eragon goes through this a couple times, but the first time he focuses in on two rival ant colonies having a battle and observes it telepathically. He compares them to the greatest warriors of all time and notes that if they were human, bards would sing of that glorious battle for generations. Then he stands up and checks out the battle with his eyes and sees pretty much nothing anyone would think of as important and reports his findings to Oromis. Oromis is disappointed in Eragon because while his observations are fascinating, he focused on one thing instead of everything around him at once.

This is pretty much exactly what Thoreau writes about in chapter 12 of Walden, except he uses his eyes to watch the whole thing instead of magic telepathy and is doing the meditations on nature out of pure interest rather than an assignment from a mentor. Plus that actually happened in real life since Walden is just an account of his time spent in a real place.

So basically Eragon is made of scenes from other works slapped together on the framwork of the Heros Journey plot with no originality.

Pretty much.

The usual claim that it is a fantasy rehash of Star Wars with EarthSea magic is not accurate. Those are only the most obvious thefts, and everytime there is a thread about the books someone will point out how this or that was lifted from another series.

It's not the case of reading widely then distilling those influences to give your own spin on the genre. Inheritance is a Frankenstein's Monster where all the bodyparts have been surgically removed from better books then grafted wholesale onto the hulking abomination of a series that only awaits the lightning strike of self-publishing to lurch off the slab.

I was on a plane that had Twilight 4 on the in-flight entertainment, ended up watching some of it over someone's shoulder. There was this passably badass fight scene -- great takedowns, merciless body count like GRRM was writing, sufficiently brutal. I remember thinking, "Hm. That's no so bad; maybe I should give the movies a go."

Then the whole entire fifteen minute shebang was massively retconned as having only happened in this guy's head as he read the threads of fate to see the outcome of what WOULD happen if they squared off. Potential? Squandered. Fuck everything about that franchise.

The first three were great, and the last 4 were meh, except for the ending, which was at least somewhat creative. I think the series just goes on too long without changing the "feel" of the series.

I always preferred the Abhorsen books myself, though I haven't read anything past the third one.

Shades Children was OK, but had a disappointing ending, and would have worked much better as two books.

Ragwitch is one of his more creative books, but it's written for a younger audience, which is the opposite direction it should have taken.

In any kind of a realistic scenario, the Empire crushes the rebel army. They outclass the combined rebel front in literally everyday imaginable.

That, combined with the fact that there were absolutely no counter rebels, let alone a organized continuation of the war after the death of Sauron by his Generals/advisors/whoever shows that the rebels won only because rebels win in these kinds of stories.

Don't even get me started on the political issues of some nigger woman Che Guevara becoming empress of mankind.

Twilight lore werewolves aren't actually werewolves, but shapeshifters who take a wolf form due to a backstory of a tribe chief who soulsurfed into a wolf to fight one of the Cold Ones (a vampire attacking the tribe). After, the chief shifted back to human form without needing to surf and ever since, that tribe has had people turn into shifters depending on the apparent need. What with a vampire family just across the way, there's been several shifters this generation. This shifterism is also apparently genetic and results in a 24th pair of chromosomes. Book 4 is retarded.

These shifters have an affectation wherein, for breeding sake or something else, they can unconsciously identify their perfect mate in what is coined as "imprinting." Just seeing them completely rewires their brain and personality to be suited to whatever their prospective mate needs. Nothing else in the world matters anymore, only them.

Jacob, resident romantic triangle-er, childhood friend of MarySue Bella, is a wolfshifter who is super duper in love with her and fights Edward over her and causes no shortage of grief, even when Bella becomes preggers with Edward's kid, which most people would think is functionally impossible because vampires have 25 chromosomes pairs(Book 4 is dumb). Jacob protects and helps her up until the child's birth (C-section via Edward's teeth). Jacob takes one look at the new baby, Renesmee, and imprints on her.

Renesmee has an eerie dhampir ability to send emotional/memory messages by touch, and is incredibly mature for her age of baby. After a few months she's the size of a 6yearold and clever. Jacob is devoted to her and it's stated that she's well aware of the hold she has on him and enjoys it, and that Jacob will be the guardian, friend, whatever she needs, even when the time comes, a lover.

Which, according to another dhampir, will be at age seven where she will be physically 17 and that physical age permanently. Book 4 is dumb.

Honestly the Jacob section of Breaking Dawn is the best part because we finally see Bella from another perspective even if it's just as masturbatory. BD has my favorite endline of a chapter, that being "And then Bella vomited a fountain of blood."

He describes every other thing in the world that mattered to him as dangling on a string that immediately drops the second he sees the baby, and then all the lines of his life are drawn to her. It's incredibly unsettling since it's painted to be a good thing ultimately.

BD is worse because they take what might be passable werewolf lore and try and pretend there's science involved at all. Breaking Dawn involved a big buildup to a fight that doesn't happen, Bella discovering at just the right moment she has absolute control over her power, and poor fucking Charlie having to come to terms that his daughter is beyond saving.
>>
>>53642267
Wouldn't bother, it's just another Opal Koboi scheme of the week, with a side of more heavy handed enviromental preaching.
Only remarkable thing is more hinting of Artemis and Holly becoming an item.
>>
>>53642435
There was some mention of actual werewolves by the Volturi I think, I remember some character mentioning how these were different than the ones back in somewhere-i-can't-remember.

Charlie's the Dad, right? I think I've heard he's supposed to be the single best character in the series, or am I confused?
>>
>>53642942
Can't comment for book 2 cos there's only so much teenage angst, depression and not quite suicides to hallucinate I can stand.
However most of the time he's portrayed fairly well in his role as a dad who's trying to get along with a daughter he doesn't know we'll. He's awkward and concerned and arguably should be cos his daughter is bat shit fucking insane

It's an Objectivist fantasy series about a guy with a sword which will only kill people if the wielded is fully convinced that they are evil.

This

It's been so long but I remember the last scene all too well.

Big introduction to more in-depth fantasy settings when I was younger
>>
>>53645791
It starts out reasonably innocuous, but quickly devolves into an attempt at forcing a particular political view on the player.
This political view also happens to be fucking bananas, and is essentially chaotic evil codified into a socio-ideological framework and re-branded as "good because reasons" with some pretty extreme mental acrobatics.
Altruism (even to save a life) is evil, and other good stuff like that.

Note that the writer genuinely tries to convince the reader of this, and essentially railroads everything that happens to fit that end. Strawman after strawman is erected in a vainglorious attempt at illuminating the reader.

And by player, I mean reader. Sleep deprivation.

>>53646550
>Altruism (even to save a life) is evil
That's also, at best, a corruption of Objectivist philosophy. What Rand said was that altruism, as defined by Comte was evil as it was complete self-negligence and thus self-destructive. (Rand also wasn't alone in this criticism. John Stuart Mill also thought it was batshit crazy.)

She explicitly said that she didn't think there was any evil everyday charity, as long as the people who do it, do it because they want to do it, and as long as they realize that it isn't the altruistic nature of the act that makes them a good people, but that they act in accordance with their own desires.
>>
>>53646126
Much rather get thrown beyond the ninth gate than deal with being the eternal slave of a necromancer or food for some greater dead monstrosity.

Though considering what happens to Chlorr of the mask, Astarael can be a bit of a mercy too.

I actually used to love the books, but as I grew older I started to realize what was wrong with it.Even as a kid though, I was waiting for when the elves might be humbled a bit, so they'd tone down the smug assholery a little. It never happened, and even young me was disappointed.
