Rolled 1 (1d26)

Aircraft-based armies edition
Conversion Work subedition

Death Guard tested out their new knives, Primarchs are reverse Fisher Kings and Sanguinius got himself a makeover. A Vorax is obviously charismatic when compared to parody Wolf names and the Reductor read some Iain M Banks. Increasing autistic arguments about Magnus, the Emperor and 8e continued to disrupt bread comfiness and some of the Stormwhales turned to Nurgle. All this and more in the last thread >>53587057

Well, seeing as a yiff in the last thread seemed mad the TS got another novel, time to start dumping full spoilers for Crimson King I guess. Though I don't see much to rage or complain about really, other than McNeil's continuing drop off a cliff, quality wise.

>The Magnus shard that will become Janus is chilling under the palace being all sad
>Ahriman, Lucius and a bunch of dudes you'll only care about if you read the John French books go to steal a thing called the Iron Occulus on the orders of Magnus
>Some time ago, the Eldar tried to destroy the Iron Occulus, but failed. The defenders of it captured Jain Zar and have her locked up, conscious, in some kind of paralyzing field.
>Ahriman pauses to shit-talk at her.
>They steal the Iron Occulus, which turns out to be a daemon called Aforgomon. It's an oracle.
>In stealing it, Sobek triggers the flesh-change in himself. The others freeze him before he Spawns out.
>Ahriman strikes a bargain with Aforgomon, which isn't explicitly spelled out as yet, but appears to be something in return for a soul sacrifice.
>It turns out that Magnus vs Ahriman dynamic is already in place; Ahriman is frantic to cure the flesh-change, but Magnus has banned research into it. Amon has also already taken up his role as third wheel, his interests diverging from them both.
>Lorgar psychically visits Magnus on the Planet of Sorcerers to tell him once more about the benefits of this little thing called Chaos.
>He goes on and on about how great it is and how awesome Horus is and how Magnus should join up with the cool kids or be a loser forever and also smell
>Magnus gets annoyed and starts pulling Lorgar's soul apart and threatens to cast him to a pack of waiting daemons if he doesn't shut the fuck up. He then tells Lorgar to go, and never come back.
>Lucius and Sanakht are bro-ing it up, which is kind of cute
>>
>>53618369
So that's why they wrote that short story about lucius visiting the planet of sorcerers. I wondered what the point of that was.
>>
Guilliman vs Fulgrim duel was funny, most of the time Phoenician was mocking Smurf and when Roboute wounded one of Pilgrim's Fulgrim got mad and beat shit from Guilliman.
>>
>>53618369
More Crimson King spoilers

>Magnus is dying, Amon decides to try and save him.
>3 of the legion flagships Magnus sent away at Prospero turn up at the Planet of Sorcerers for some reason, with their complements of marines.
>Ahriman, Sanakht and Hathor Maat do a big mad mental spell in an attempt to save Sobek.
>It works.
>Sobek is saved from the flesh-change. The others are jubilant.
>Sobek takes one look at them, says "All is dust" and then immolates in spontaneous combustion. His ashen remains pool inside his armour.
>Ahriman cannot understand what happened - they did it *perfectly*. Magnus arrives and tells Ahriman that he just got played, and will Ahzek really, seriously this time, stop fucking disobeying him on this. Ahriman tells dad to go fuck himself.
>Magnus only stops it from kicking off by telling Ahriman that Amon has asked for him and the others
>300 TS meet with Amon on the ruins of Tizca. Graham seems to have not got the memo about the new numbers of TS from Forgeworld; earlier they were excited about the 3 to 5,000 guys that came back on the ships.
>I hoped you liked the John French books, because Graham is also doing his trick of making everyone in them be his rando background characters instead of someone new.
>Amon tells everyone Magnus is dying, and that they need to enact a ritual where they fight the warp ghosts of the burning of Prospero and re-enact the final battle to see how Magnus got hurt and work out how they can heal him. So they all do it, the absolute witches.
>They learn that 5 shards of Magnus scattered into the warp, and Ahriman gets a glimpse of where they are, and that Magnus needs them back to be fully healed
>R-r-r-rRoadtrip

If there's any question about any form of technological progression or rejuvination, Cawl is your answer. There's not much thought put into how or why he was able to do all that, but it's easier to just credit your new OC donutsteel Archmagos because what he does goes against everything the Admech stood for prior to Gathering Storm.

cont.

>Promus, once Chief Librarian of the Ultramarines is now a Knight Errant. He is employed to psychically test all the wounded Shattered Legion survivors Mal has been collecting to see if they are suitable candidates for the Titan project.
>Captain Japan turns up and raises the weeb levels to dangerously high. He, Promus, some Cybernetica dudes and a squad of Space Wolves are sent to ambush Ahriman at a Sisters of Silence gaol for psykers. Mal sends them on this mission using a secret intelligence source that is implied to be Janus.
>In the gaol are the remembrancers from ATS.
>Hathor Maat fixes Lucius's face up just the way Lucius wants; to be that of a perfect hero. He of course ends up looking like Fulgrim.
>One problem; doing so triggers the early signs of the flesh-change in Hathor Maat. Ruh-roh.
>Hey old-timers, Mordant Hex cameos. His real name is Onuris Hex and he's a Scarab Occult officer.
>Big fight. Much bullshit. Captain Japan kills a Thousand Son and survives a duel with Lucius because he's a samurai with a katana or some shit. The TS - despite the Aforgomon pointing out they have numerical and power superiority - take a beating because Space Wolves are better than the Thousand Sons. The TS only make it out because Ignis remote pilots a Reaver Titan in a spacewalk and crashes the party.
>The TS steal a Black Ship and escape with Camille, but Lemuel Gaumon and Menkaura are captured.
>Meanwhile, Magnus' attempt to build some new psychic lunacy gets him lost in the Warp. Amon swears to find him.

Well that was a load of entertaining bullshit for a first big fight scene. Roadtrip part 2 coming later.

I'd agree on the "plot device" thing, but at least he actually has flaws, and ones that may actually matter: he's tiptoeing the Heretek line, Guilliman thinks he'll have to go at some point, he's not telling people where he's going all the time, he desperately wants to be Fabricator General, and he's got a creation that interfaces with the warp and has a suspicious resemblance to an Abominable Intelligence (he claims it's just a smart machine spirit) that's espousing looting xenotech.

Okay, some neat continuity / fluff porn is going down.

>Hathor Maat strikes a deal with Aforgomon to save him from the flesh-change
>Promus and the Rune-Priest Bjarki lay the verbal smackdown on Menkaura about how Magnus totally sucks ass, and to their surprise, Menkaura agrees and tells them what Ahriman is doing and that they need to stop it; if they don't, Magnus will go full Chaotic Evil.
>This scene lays on the Wolf/Imperial perspective a bit thick, but is probably gonna come up in the TS are Dindus arguments in the future.
>Amon continues his - subjective - centuries long journey to find sharded Magnus, while Ahriman and co. go to a fucked up warp portal thing on the word of the daemon oracle. Ahriman goes on a spirit vision and sees Ohrzmud. It's like a shittier version of the John French stuff.
>And in a shittier version of Dan Abnett stuff, Gaumon gets made to act as a skjald to the wolf pack. He also does a tarot reading that directs the Imps to Aghoru, where they find a shard of Magnus, this one of his aggression. Fight-scene. Captain Japan one-ups surviving a duel with Lucius by now somehow surviving a brawl with (a shard of) Magnus the Red.
>The shard does ultimately beat them all, but everyone forgot they brought Menkaura and Gaumon with them.
>Menkaura binds the Magnus-shard into Lemuel Gaumon using some of that sweet black magic.
>Ahriman and co. time-travel back to the Boetian campaign. They turn out to be the XV Legion warriors who throw Kasper Hawser's team out of that shrine from the beginning of Prospero Burns.
>They knock through it and find a shard of Magnus, this one of his curiosity. Ahriman convinces it to return with them. It piggy-backs itself into him.
>Amon finds a very old Magnus, who has finished building his Orrery. This Magnus reveals it was the one who helped the Salamanders in Deathfire. He agrees to go back to the Planet of Sorcerers with Amon.

Well, that got interesting.

Nagasena, one of McNeil's pet characters. He's the guy who acts like a Samurai for some reason. His katana gets broken and he sings a song for it while crying and compares losing it to the Rune-Priest being upset that he lost a packmate.

I know we laugh a bit about sues but this guy has survived two fights where he should have been instantly gibbed so far.

The shard merged with Ahriman and was present as an awake being in his mind. Ahriman complained that it was too overwhelming so the shard withdrew to 'sleep'. It's not clear if it is currently still in him, or in his hequa staff, which turned pure white when the shard went quiet.

The shards so far:
Janus - Nobility.
Gaumon - Anger
Ahriman - Curiosity
Magnus on the Planet of Sorcerers didn't recombine with all the shards that went with him and instead used them as familiars to write down all the knowledge from Prospero he could remember. The effort burned them out and started killing his soul. He re-absorbed them, thought he was then powerful enough to build a big warp...library...thing, but he was wrong. He got lost in the warp for long enough to appear very, very old, but succeeded in building the thing in the end. This version of him is the one that saved the Salamanders in Deathfire.

>So I didn't mention it, figuring it would be important later, but Gaumon has been carrying around the ashes of Callista Eris, and no-one else has noticed. Turns out they were another shard of Magnus. They absorb into Gaumon also.
>Hathor Maat, as part of his deal with Aforgomon, inserts a tiny piece of nonsense into the Book of Magnus, which is heavily implied to be the reason spells cast using it fuck up in the future.

Last part of the Crimson King

>Ahriman sacrifices Hathor Maat to the daemon
>Aforgomon manifests using Maat's body and turns out to be Fateweaver.
>Ahriman, Fateweaver and the shard of Magnus in Ahriman merge and super-saiyan up. Both aspects of Magnus then duel.
>Ahriman-Magnus wins, and absorbs the shards from Gaumon-Magnus.
>God, this is some dumb shit.
>The Thousand Sons teleport out.
>Gaumon wakes up, Bjarki examines him and discerns he has - Exorcist Astartes-style - been made proof against future warptouch. He is wyrd-wraith.
>So, Promus survived, but the thing Kairos told Bjarki about him is nagging him. He straight out askes Promus, has Promus killed Space Wolves? Has he killed loyal space marines?
>Promus, as we saw at the start, has. He slew candidates not fit for the Titan project. He confesses he has done as accused.
>The Space Wolves cut him down instantly.
>Gaumon takes Promus' oath of moment from his armour and swears that he will honour the memory of a once-decent man. From this moment on, Gaumon will be known as Promeus.
>(Promeus is one of the founders of the Inquisition)
>The Thousand Sons return home, and Ahriman dumps the shards into Magnus, and heals him.
>Lots of references to events in the John French books here as Tolbek and Sanakht bitch at Ahriman and Ignis has kidnapped a Cybernetica robot that will become Credence.
>Magnus announces that the Thousand Sons will join with Horus and fight at Terra, but not to help Chaos win, but just so that Magnus can reclaim his last shard.

the end, one last post incoming
>>
>>53622470
So we now know the IDs of 3 of the 4 founders of the Inquisition. They are 2 men and 2 women.
The 2 men are Kyril Sindermann and Lemuel Gaumon, now known as Promeus. One of the women is Amendera Kendel.
Magnus gets all his shards back except the one in Janus, and getting it back is apparently the sole reason he finally declares for Horus; he says as soon as he gets it they will abandon the traitor forces.
After that, his plan is to store all knowledge in the universe inside the Orrery, the giant library he has built in the warp, so that nothing can ever be lost again.
Lucius just kind of vanishes at the end, but he muses before that that, when he gets bored hanging out with the TS, he intends to go hang out with Horus instead. So look for him there I guess?
Pretty much all named alive TS of any import ever appear in this book and we now know the fates of all their fluff characters. So I guess their plot thread is done, bar guest appearances.
Oh, and Mal is harvesting Shattered Legion survivors that make it to Terra to be turned into Grey Knights; any that fail an insanely strict purity test get euthanised
I think that's it?
>>53622275

Well, there's no literal sentence where Janus says "So I used to be Revuel Arvida" but the evidence allowing us to draw that conclusion is overwhelming in favour.
I would be confident in treating it as such until anything conflicting is released.

As for name degradation, the latin spelling of Janus is Ianus, they're pronounced the same.

Oh and I forgot to sume the info relevant to the TS, the Rubric of Ahriman is always doomed to fail as, first, it seems Tzeentch actively fucks up Ahriman's attempts to avoid the flesh-change, as what they did with Sobek actually worked. This is why Magnus keeps telling him to leave it, he knows Ahriman is just being played. Further to this, Kairos Fateweaver has Hathor Maat vandalise the Book of Magnus, so that there will be a small but critical error in the lore inside it.
So that, somewhat bluntly, continues the Just As Planned theming.

>>
>>53628396
I don't know if it's very compelling myself, but the older fluff for the TS joining Horus was that they needed sanctuary and only Horus was strong enough to provide it. I always felt that was a bit weird considering they got given their daemon-planet immediately they fell at Prospero and could've just chilled there.
I suppose 'we got betrayed, time to go kill them back' is also more compelling than muh shard.

However, it is set up in the novel, getting them back is the whole fucking plot and quite deliberately links in to previous characterisation - not just in flashbacks but flashforwards - and scenes. The beginning of Prospero Burns literally happens but from Ahriman's perspective instead of Hawser's.

So I dunno if I would say it is 'better'. Magnus seems very petty but then the shards are the most important thing to him and hey...a primarch being petty, what a shock amirite

The bit from Prospero Burns is the very beginning when Hawser's convservator team get kicked out by some Thousand Sons. Turns out those Thousand Sons are Ahriman, Hathor Maat, Sanakht and Tolbek from the future.

Still, I feel that you could get another couple of books about the Schism of Mars in, entirely mundane, no Void Dragon bullshit, just the various holy and unholy cogboys grabbing every weapon they possess to beat the everliving crap out of each other. No Marines aside from maybe the odd outside viewpoint chapter, unlike Cybernetica.

Then we'll go back in our hole until the HH Mars Black Book, but given even the most unrelated minor Marines got at least a short story (bar a couple of the Istvaan III bros, RIP Goodman Tarvitz) I just want a faction swansong before everything goes Terra-shaped.

Eh, repetition in ancient texts is a result of how they were transcribed from dudes orating them. Oral storytelling includes heavy use of repetition as it was easier for the dudes telling to remember and easier for the dudes listening to follow along.
>>
>>53630337
He's not saying that God wasn't a dick.. He's saying that God is repeatedly praised regardless of the dickish stuff he does.
>>
>>53630362
The Emperor is also constantly praised in the face of his dickish acts. The difference between him and Cawl and Garro is that he actually fucks up, whereas the universe has to go out of its way to screw the latter two over on account of them having no faults of their own.

Hard to say, possibly not. While we don't know exactly what he did on the FW books, he's been a game designer for years and was in deep with Bligh, they were tight af and worked together on most things.
It could turn out he's a great dev and it's just his fiction that's a bit iffy. I don't mind his fiction to be honest, but each to their own.

It sort of makes sense for Iron Warriors to have the most loyalists, they were easily the most scattered legion due to always pulling garrison duty, and units like Kyr Vhalen's had been operating idependantly for decades prior to Istvaan.

Plus their primarch was a douche to them.

Decent chance of it. The good news is that Book 9 is likely to be about Tallarn (as much as I love the WS, they don’t have the fanbase to carry a black book on their own – they’ll have to share with something big). French’s Tallarn novels are good; he gets human warfare.
>>
>>53630180
Agreed. Swallow does horror well, but that's it. I didn't like Fear to Tread.

Guy Haley’s 40k stuff is great (well, Baneblade and Shadowsword are – I’m a third into Dark Imperium and having major doubts about it). Pharos was a mixed bag. I don’t think he did well writing the Night Lords.
>>
>>53633468
I'm halfway through and enjoying all of Dark Imperium apart from the chapters dealing with primarines in combat, what with their GW-mandated scenes of awesome and protagonist-induced idiocy shown by the Iron Warriors. Cawl being accountable for his xenotech usage, freaky tech-heresy and general constant skulduggery, guilliman becoming jaded, Calgar being sick of this shit, and the fuckery with the poor bastards in the guard are all enjoyable.
>>
>>53633397
But he's going to BTFO IWs double hard :'(
And then he'll include something like "there were too few loyal Iron Warriors" just to screw with us.

Grav Myrmidons will rip squads apart given Line of Sight in long corridors, a good position with four or five basically makes them complete area denial.
Ursarax are pricy but will also tear through Custodes, since if you get the charge with your jump packs you're only taking S5 hits back before I1 where you're smearing them over the walls with S10 fists.

Thrall blobs are restricted to 15 scrubs/unit, but can still easily hold a squad of bananas off for a good two turns. Those THEY want to take in long corridors to bring the bolters into play, so you may be able to pincer them there.
