Since we already know what's going to be in Xanathar's Guide to Everything, what are you hoping for from Tomb of Annihilation?

Everything.

We ran through this with Volo's Guide: please, just XGE. Any more than four letters and it gets messy. Here's a rundown:

- November
- ~200 pages
- >25 subclasses (2 or more for each class except wizard, most or all from UA)
- variant rules
- expanded trap rules (UA)
- downtime rules (UA)
- new spells (UA + more?)
- new magic item rules

His damage was so-so but not horrid. It was reliable. 2d6 cantrip ain't bad when it's an AoE.

The real power was his being able to pass around essentially free healing potions, cheese the environment with Acid Flask (since it does automatic, maximized damage to objects and structures), and keep Shield up on three people at once if he wanted. The magic-items-for-free were great, too. Clockwork Bird Scout was useful.

I, on the other hand, did 1d8 damage every round which quickly petered out in usefulness and my only useful combat power was Occluded Mind, which got used to make enemies disarm themselves or otherwise waste a turn doing nothing because my DM isn't a dummy who'd let me have enemies kill each other every turn

How do you guys play your enemies?

How smart are they? What tactics do they take? Do they ever go for grapples? Do they take hostages? What about downed players? Do they disregard them? If they see a Cleric bring someone back from being downed, do they start targeting downed people?

What is the smartest you are willing to make a character before you draw the line?

It's Acererak. He's been in several pieces of 5E art.

>>53604548
You're attacking with your claws, not attacking with your Claws. Does that make sense?

It works like this:
You can either play entirely like you're a Monk who just happens to be a bear today, making normal unarmed strikes and using your Dexterity instead of Strength if you want and having all that sweet unarmed progression die according to the Martial Arts table, the bonus action unarmed attack, Flurry of Blows, etc.
Or you can take what is essentially a weapon attack using your beast form's weapon as any normal Druid would, ignoring any benefits that MA might give like Dex-as-AB/Dam or triggering your bonus action unarmed hit.

The ideal way to balance this is to say that you pick either or for a round. None of that "I attack with my giant elk's Antlers and deal 3d12+Str and knock prone on a DC15 strength check, then as my Extra Attack I make an unarmed strike with my hoof for 1d6+Dex, and then bonus action attack again for 1d6+Dex". Don't mix and match. You are either entirely kungfu-ing that turn or you're not.

>>
Are convoluted rules questions allowed here?

If so, how does one determine the speed in which a player can fall from a great height?

The scenario is that my character was picked up by a Roc and carried away. I was able to break free and I want to know how many turns it takes me to fall to the ground from a height of 240 feet.
>>
>>53604671
Which is why he's awesome. All those other guys never get anywhere. Zhengyi just made a fucking of zombies and monsters when no one was looking and rolled over everything in his way. No muss, no fuss. He's a practical lich. What the fuck are the rest of the liches doing? Just sitting in their holes studying magic and jerking off. Acererak isn't even going to get to have any fun before a party of level appropriate adventurers knock down his door and ruin his day. At least Zhengyi got to murder tens of thousands of people and strike fear into several countries.
>>
>>53604704

>"Yeah I said the pups would be taken care of, not that WE would take care of them. Nature takes care itself. If the pups are meant to live then they will fight and find a way. If they are not, then another predator will come by and consume them. That is how nature works. Through human interference to keep animals alive longer than they should be, you are only creating a stunted animal reliant upon humans. To you it may seem barbaric, but understand that nature does not operate by human standards of morality."
>Other party member: "You still can't just leave them here. By choosing to abandon these injured pups, you are choosing death for them. You know a young, injured animal like this cannot survive no matter what. You are killing these pups by abandoning them."
Who was in the right here? The PETA pally who wanted to let nature handle nature, or the party members who said that abandoning the pups is breaking the oath of someone sworn to protect nature?

>If so, how does one determine the speed in which a player can fall from a great height?
High School physics. Terminal velocity for a human is around 53 m/s. The distance required to reach that is
53/2/9.81=2.7 meters, which is negligible.
240 feet is ~73 meters, so you should hit the ground in roughly 3 seconds.

Oath of Ancients seems like it is heavily based on the Green Knight from Arthurian legend. It seems like the Paladin is going for a more druidic approach. Personally I find his interpretation to be more interesting than what the books says but yes, if you wanted to be a rules lawyer then technically the Paladin is misguided.
>>
>>53604799
Hey, let's not say that Zhengyi just kicked the bucket like any other old lich. He got stomped by a party of guys who were strong enough to CHUMP HALF AN UNDEAD ARMY, BEAT UP A LICH, GO TO HELL, JACK ORCUS' WAND, GO TO HEAVEN, HAVE A PERSONAL CHAT WITH BAHAMUT, AND KILL AN AVATAR OF TIAMAT.

Everyone in this party was palling around with legit Gods on the regular, and Zhengyi's STILL probably "around" in some way in the crumbling not-even-ruins-for-some-reason of Castle Perilous.

>>
>>53605014
his answer is actually roughly correct, though. 3.85s or so.
>>
>>53604910
^ I was the guy who wrote this. I think I somewhat changed my mind about the Paladin being right. I think what he did was morally correct and I would have done what he did but I also believe that he did not act according to the principals of the Oath of the Ancients as written.

>>53604903
After reading this, and the Oath of the Ancients description, I actually think that it would be more "in-class" to save the pups.

>"The Oath of the Ancients is as old as the race of elves and the rituals of the druids. Sometimes called fey knights, green knights, or horned knights, paladins who swear this oath cast their lot with the side of the light in the cosmic struggle against darkness because they love the beautiful and life-giving things of the world, not necessarily because they believe in principals of honor, courage, and justice. They adorn their armor and clothing with images of growing things - leaves, antlers, or flowers - to reflect their commitment to preserving life and light in the world."

Someone who took the Oath of the Ancients would probably be inclined to saving the wolf pups because they have taken a "commitment to preserving life and light in the world." A Druid which is more neutral would be more likely to have the response of leaving the pups to nature. That said flaws exist, and this ancient oath paladin's darwinism could be considered one.
>>
>>53605014
Weight does in fact have an effect on your falling speed, although it is very minute. Dropping a bowling ball and a golf ball from the same height will net different results do to wind resistance.

2-4 more fun sessions, with one of them pitting you against a giant and you'll go "woah that was a fun boss".

>15th Level - Purity of Spirit: Wow. You get an always-active level 1 spell. That is also situational. I think I'm seeing a trend here.
>20th Level - Holy Nimbus: You become a lightbulb. Okay. The AoE 10 radiant damage/turn is great but it only lasts for 1 minute per long rest. Still fairly nice, I guess.

Why is the Oath of Devotion so bad?

It only seems shit because the rest of the archetypes tend towards being so obscenely good. The archetype not giving you too much powerful stuff was obviously intended to be a check on the power of the base class, as >>53605251

We can conclude that Devotion was the first archetype they concocted, and everything after that was Perkins playing Paladin Superhero Power Fantasy and trying to cram as much bullshit as possible into his pet class.

Okay guys, my DM does a thing called "geometric" fall damage, so that falling 10 feet does 1d6 damage, 20 feet 3d6, 30 feet 6d6, 40 feet 10d6, 50 feet 15d6, and 60 feet 21d6. He caps out the damage at 60 feet.

First of all, is this a better system than default?
Second, how can this be broken?

Call of Cthulhu in a long-deprecated fallout shelter half under my friend's university.
It was Halloween, and late, and we weren't supposed to know how to even get INTO that bit of the drainage tunnels much less have the keys, which naturally made it all the more tantalizing--but it was muddy as all hell from decades of rain runoff and the oil lamps he brought for mood-appropriate lighting didn't put out half as much heat as he thought they would. We were all incredibly uncomfortable the whole time. To cap it all off my friend, the GM, somehow tore his backpack as we were leaving and his books and half his notes ended up in a big muddy puddle.

We went and got coffee and shitty convenience store donuts, and commiserated for a while as he tried to salvage what he could of the book. Eventually we went back to crash at his place at around four in the morning.

A great memory to look back on, but it was all pretty shit at the time.

The Pact Primeval. It's in the Fiendish Codex.

Gods were tired of having to deal with all the souls of shitty people, so Asmodeus came up with a contract that said he'd look after them and essentially run a private prison for shitty souls. Some Gods signed on, forked over all the evil souls, gave Asmodeus rulership over this new place called "Hell"...

...and then freaked the fuck out when he realized he was corrupting all the living people, trying to trick them into becoming evil so he'd get their souls when he died, ensuring they'd never be reformed, and was also sucking up all their power to make himself more hot shit.

Gargauth is still a better devil lawyer god.

>>
>>53605401
It's really unclear desu. Forgotten Realms lore says that the gods of good, neutrality, etc weren't getting enough power because their powers were derived from worship and worship was voluntary. Asmodeus introduced the concept of punishment, to give a greater incentive for mortals to worship their gods, and further increasing the power of the other gods. Eventually the gods realized that he was tempting more and more people to the cause of evil so that he could extract magical energy from their souls, and realized they fucked up.

I kind of prefer the Planescape version, where evil souls become larvae on the Lower Planes, to be harvested by devils and demons to propagate their species and by yugoloths and night hags as spell components and currency.

Campaign we started two months ago. Last week we find a scroll and couldn't identify it. Wizard is a complete noob who had zero useful spells, all damage all the time. Same for our other casters because they'd assumed he had them. He'd previously been using scrolls of identify that he'd purchased when our characters went around town.

So, we're getting to the end of this section we're in and we run into the boss. The Cheshire Cat in Rakshasa form. I recognized it immediately when he described the boss and just stared the DM down. CR 13 creature when we're 7th level.

It starts beating the absolute fuck out of us. We do the same to him. Suddenly, his fucking mouth pops off his face and flies 60ft. away and his arms pop off and get behind the now mouthless and armless body and summons a hurdy-gurdy and starts playing a song.

The mouth starts singing and the DM tells us that we can feel our sanity slipping. We subconsciously start thinking blue is red, water is dry and chicken tastes like orc.

My character freaks and pulls out the unknown scroll and immediately uses it because what the fuck.

DM stares at me in shock.

Meteor comes flying down out of the sky and lands in the middle of the three parts of the Rakshasa, the explosion launches us all 100ft. and our cleric barely manages to survive with 1 HP and then whips out his Wand of Cure Wounds to save the rest of us who are dying.

Nothing left of the Rakshasa. Nothing. Not even the magical Astral Compass he'd stolen that we needed to find one of the three surviving companions of an ancient artificer lord whose secret treasury we're trying to find.

Fiendish Codex's Pact Primeval stuff isn't FR specific lore, I think. It's default D&D, since all through 3rd and 3.5e WotC kept trying to divorce FR from Planescape and such by giving it a separate cosmology to the baseline D&D setting (the Great Tree, specifically, rather than the Wheel), unless 5e made it FR lore now.

I think it depends on how your DM interprets the cantrip minor illusion. Ours is lenient and so out arcane trickster keeps using it to create mobile arrow slit walls, which provide cover for his Crossbow Expert attacks, and enemies must actively dedicate themselves to an Int check to disbelieve the wall. This has inspired others in the group to also take up arcane trickster.

Player starts on a ship and the ship sinks. They wake up on a beach and collect weapons, armor and other equipment from bits of the ship that made it the shore.

They realize that they're on the tip of a peninsula about a mile from a large lighthouse. While making their way over there, they fight their way through bullywugs, eventually reaching the lighthouse where they discover a 1st/2nd level bullywug warlock using a strange crystal orb to manipulate the ocean that he's able to see from the vantage point.

Player finds notes from the previous occupant, a wizard, who was studying said orb and was worried of people misusing its powers for profit or causing peril. Which is what the bullywugs were doing.

If the adventure continues, have all the players meet up after having discovered their own versions of these orbs (earth orb that causes sinkholes/earthquakes, fire orb that causes wildfires, wind orb that causes hurricanes, etc.).

>>

This exactly.

Mobile is all you need. People talk about monks having too little HP. The idea is to not stay around to get hit. They work great as skirmishers.

If you're never gonna be able to get away, then you spend a ki point to dodge.
Otherwise, run in, punch/stun, what you can. Run away.
>>
>>53606485
Look in the Downtime UA. There's a section for crafting. Essentially a character with proficiency in Smith's tools could make armor and weapons by spending half of its listed price in resources and 1/50th of the price in workweeks.
>studded leather would cost 22 gp and take 1 workweek

Has anyone else played kobold press adventures for 5e? My group has been running them and I'm starting to get concerned about my wizards survivability with their fondness for repeating AoE Con save damage effects.

We're level 3 now, and the tankier members of the party have more than twice my HP. Which means if they keep this up, I'm going to go from having a 75% chance of going unconscious and having to make save or die throws, to having a 75% chance outright die when this bullshit goes off.

Well It's curse of Strahd and in our last session there was a bunch of crows that our Sorc took care of with a fireball. For me it's not so much about what we're fighting as much as me not wanting to ever be useless in a fight, even if a single Javelin isn't much.
>>
>>53606561
House rules. In our games, all 3 of us regular DMs agreed that the best way to handle selling magic items or acquiring specific ones is through auction houses or merchant organizations.

It also creates some fun RP encounters.
Ex: PCs buy a badass dagger made out of ice that is obviously magical in a crazy bidding war and a bag of holding in an auction.

When they leave the auction house, rich people start trying to get them to sell it. If they don't, when they leave the city, they're ambushed and have to fight their way out. Then, they can opt to never return to the city or find out who sent the attackers and return for revenge.

>>53606606
Javelins are better for fighters, imo. Unless you're going a DEX build, stick with the javelin.

>>
>>53606899
Yeah that's not there, didn't realize you wanted the individual modules, sorry.
>>
>>53606907
There isn't one because it's not "Eastern-style" anything in Faerun.
Though Faerun does indeed have Kara-Tur, the monk-style Ki manipulation techniques are not actually "from" there and people in Faerun have had knowledge of how to do them for a VERY long time (three thousand years at least based on the timeline), so Monks and their esoteric martial skills have been around pretty much forever to Faerunians.

They aren't necessarily that widespread largely because it takes a lot of time and commitment to develop those sorts of abilities and learning to stab someone with a sword is a lot faster and a lot easier to learn.
And actually, Kara-Tur doesn't actually have Monks with any greater frequency then Faerun does, with the lands of that region still mostly using regular fighters and the like.

I was wanting to run a dark sun game my group will only play 5e. What changes to systerm should I made to reflect the setting more?
>>
>>53608068
Once Tomb of Annihilation comes out you might get some good rules for increasing deadliness. Beyond that, you'll have to make sure the players are keeping track of rations (normally this is handwaved but in Dark Sun it's life or death), and obviously you'll have to restrict classes.
>>
Has anyone ran OotA with the time travel from Maze Engine?

Players will start traveling about next session.

Maybe it would be fun if a demon lord traveled back in time with them?
>>
>>53608068

Old Dark Sun started at level 3 by default, but I would be curious to try having my players roll 3 level 1 characters a piece, and then seeing how long they last through some opening gauntlet, like a gladiator tournament or a slaver attack. Any surviving characters would go on to escape death/enslavement and participate in a proper adventure.

Like >>53608085 said be an asshole about rations. Be an even bigger asshole about giving them metal weapons that don't break (note - make rules for how their shitty bone/rock weapons break).

Maybe feature one magic item the entire campaign. And guess what? They have to pry it out of the BBEG's cold dead hands.

Looking for some ideas, /5eg/ anons.

For the past little bit in my campaign, I've been setting it up that there has been an increasing degree of "weird shit" happening on the continent that the players have been on. This has all been leading up to a "minor" Far Realm incursion where a rift is going to split open between the Material Plane and the Far Realm, and I want "cosmic radiation" to mutate that section of the land underneath the rift.

Currently, I've got it planned out that the rift opens up above a healthy forest near the ocean, about a week's travel from a decently-sized town. I already have descriptions ready for what the stuff does to the trees (some become fleshy, others go aetherial/translucent) and the land (it becomes glassed and turns into a super slick surface), but how would you guys recommend I have it affect the animals, and what sort of unique traits would occur?

This particular forest is home to wolves, bears, various birds (hawks, owls, etc.), and cougars, with there being a small bandit camp (occupied by humans, half-orcs, and half-elves) who are looking to GTFO before the changes to the animals and plants begin to affect them.

I was planning on running a campaign that placed an importance on rations and exploration and all of that (not in Dark Sun, but in a similarly rough world), and ran into some problems. I kind of realized that spells like Create/Destroy Water and Goodberry completely trivialize the issue. Do you think it'd be fair to limit those spells in some way? For example, the berries from Goodberry no longer provide any actual sustenance, but still do the healing, and the water from Create/Destroy Water isn't life-giving water and thus does not stave off thirst?

I feel like the mechanics are kind of pointless if they can be removed with a single spell slot, effectively.
>>
Is playing a Firbolg Warlock a stupid idea? The thought occurred to me that at-will Disguise Self would fit their whole theme pretty well.

Right now I'm thinking Fighter/Feylock and taking the Blade.
>>
>>53608458
If anything I'd change the way it works a bit. Maybe you need more then 1 goodberry to count as fed? So it's 1 slot for 1 person to eat.

With creating water, I'd just up the amount of water they need each day to make it a worse deal. Especially if they're in hot and dry environments.

Clerics and Druids won't likely be willing to give up all their 1st level slots everyday just to save some cash on food and water.
>>
>>53608489
Yeah, I may not completely remove the sustenance from Goodberry. I just figured that it's a good enough spell when all you care about is the healing, and I feel like it would become absolutely essential if I make the party care about food. You might be right about Clerics and Druids not wanting to waste the spell slots, but I honestly wouldn't put it past the party. Especially since I'm planning on making places where they can just buy food and water pretty rare.

If they end up having a Ranger in the party (who I will, of course, allow to go Revised), it'll be somewhat trivialized anyways.

I wonder if Xanathar's is going to include any variant rules for having games where the DM actually gives a fuck about rations and encumbrance and all of that.
>>
>>53608560
Really the obvious answer is to ask the party before it begins if they're cool with you removing Goodberry and Create/Destroy Water to make it more survival focused.

Aside from Life Cleric cheese those spells are rarely used in most situations.

The other idea I had, make them fail to work in some areas. Obviously it makes sense for Druids and Clerics to be able to make food and water, because they're channeling powerful magic of the world it's self. Just say they need an actual bush or tree to grow the berries on for Goodberry, and that you can only create water in areas with some water in the air.

Really though, most people aren't interested in survival. You should ask your group before anything because if they're some of the people who aren't into it then no one will have fun.

Could run it like Fallout 1, if you're willing to run a stronghold or home base. Sure, you can magic up the water you need while on your quest, but that just supplies the party. Back at home, people are still rationing while you search for a new decanter of endless water.

Come to think of it, it'd actually make sense if those spells stopped working very well because part of the idea behind the campaign is that the world's slowly falling apart. I could just say that magic to create food and water like that doesn't work because the planet's rotting away.

I did intend to ask the party, but players will be players. I've had them ask to have more stuff in a campaign and then get upset when it happens.

Thanks for the help, famalam.

3.5's top 3 were still Wizard, Cleric, and Druid by the end of its print run and the only classes that were obsoleted were shitters that needed to be replaced because they were shit at doing their job. None of 4E's core classes were obsoleted, ever.

So that leaves you with, what, UA's Cavalier for 1E? That one overpowered Cleric kit in 2E that made them into a full casting Fighter complete with free specialization? Skills & Powers? Come the fuck on.

I wanted it to still be mostly fighting in missions and such stuff, but revealing more and more of the plot, that is formed by the decisions of the players working, sharing information and sympathizing with the faction they decide to trust.

Would it be too much if I don't use checks in social situations at all? It just feels so forced, when a player bringing good arguments and playing in-character while appealing to the nature of the NPC still rolls a 4 on persuasion and fails the check changing basically the whole plot

In saying that 5E doesn't have particularly good rules for social interactions , I mean that it doesn't have any structures to handle complex social interactions. This goes beyond merely making a persuasion roll.

Games need good structures and rules to work because they provide a system of reward and feedback to the players so they can make informed choices. Basically if you're going to do this in 5E you'll need to add some house rules , the rules for faction friendlyness in the DM guide might be a good start

It's your game and you can run the roleplay freeform if you wish. Remember though as a rule for any skill check you only ever roll if you believe there's a chance of failure.

If a player lays out an argument that makes sense and you believe the NPC would 100 per cent agree with you don't need to roll. Anymore than you need to roll to see it a player can open an unlocked door.

Yeah that's the one, you need some sort of structure as a basis and importantly you need to key in the players on some of the mechanics. Enough for them to understand what is happening.

I mean imagine trying to run a combat where you don't tell players how much damage they've taken, how much damage they've given, what the various combat conditions do, what the difference between their various weapons is mechanically etc. You just randomly describe things. It would be a confusing cluster fuck. This is how most DM's run social interactions.

Players are notoriously bad at doing anything in combat other than basic attacks. The thought of tactically retreating, using terrain (beyond the rogues stealth checks) seems an alien concept.

I've tried to resolve this by having the monsters use tactics , like having pack animals outflank or having militaristic units using a shieldwall , spear formation in hopes they'll figure they can do the same. But then the party tends to derp and die horribly.
>>
>>53609406

Oh I definitely intend to hammer home the importance of flesh water and fragility of their weapons. That much is a given.

>You'd have to restrict classes.

I know, but what extent? I could ban wizards (and possibly clerics) but technically every class is now a Spelcast.

>Old Dark Sun started at level 3 by default, but I would be curious to try having my players roll 3 level 1 characters a piece, and then seeing how long they last through some opening gauntlet, like a gladiator tournament or a slaver attack.

That's a really good idea, I've allways liked the idea of the level one adventurer "funnel", this is a good set up for it.

>was planning on running a campaign that placed an importance on rations and exploration and all of that (not in Dark Sun, but in a similarly rough world), and ran into some problems. I kind of realized that spells like Create/Destroy Water and Goodberry completely trivialize the issue

You should consider actually setting it in dark sun then. The setting explicitly bars you from practically all magic spells.

You could technically cast create water but you gonna be draining life from someone else.

Of course not. You didn't let her die or even run her over.

Usain Bolt's average speed in the 100 meter dash was ~34.25 feet per second. If you let a mobile tabaxi run for x4 speed (instead of dash for x2) it covers 320 feet in a round, 53.3 feet per second. Bolt's top speed was 40.77 feet per second.

You actually don't get passive perception at all.

anyone have the pdfs for this? https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/enworld/a-touch-of-class-7-new-classes-for-5th-edition/description

Nah, just arcane magic.

Divine magic's fine in Dark Sun, there's just no gods so you get it from the elemental planes.

Has anyone had a chance to read these? What do you guys think?

>arcane archer
>saves require your intelligence modifier for the DC
ok wtf, i can "get it" thematically, but it's so screwy that they make you have to pump your dump stat, not to mention you still only get 2 uses of your arcane archery thing before needing a rest, but i guess a short rest isn't too bad
>>
>>53611910

I think it should be 4 uses at least, coming out to 1 per 4 combats (most people stop after that many iirc) or 2 per 2 combats then running on empty. The DC is a bit messed up and they were clearly trying to attach it to the Eldritch Knight.
>>
>>53611992
It's int because it's arcane.
>4 battles per short rest even being considered.
Shit, man. You do know it's short rest recharge, right?
>>
>>53611145
looks neat, i bet they're balance is non-existant though
>>
>>53612230

When you get a short rest varies wildly between different DMs. Its a very unreliable aspect of the game, so I err toward more uses per rest just to be safe.
>>
>>53612449
If you aren't going to get any short rests, you should probably not play a short rest class and should also probably die of exhaustion from never eating and resting.
>>
>>53612763

That's not something you can predict with a DM you don't know very well and still varies between groups. Some say five minutes, some say an hour, some make you do several fights before allowing any sort of rest. Its further exacerbated by the influx of newfags 5e brought in who don't know any better or lack any critical eye for mechanics.
