Fantasy races, magic and supernatural phenomena are all fairly common (but weak), with technological and social advancement being modern. The reason for this could be the worlds magic is used by channeling and shaping ether from a parallel spiritual landscape where all the gods reside, however the 'closeness' of the ether dimension could be in constant flux either increasing or decreasing the magical phenomena of the world.
The worlds just out of a era of magical decline that was far longer than usual prompting the rapid advancement of industrial methods. Now the ethereal dimension is starting to reconnect enough for the gods to touch he worldly plane again (which they couldn't for a while), have discovered civilizations that are on the technological fast track and are trying to get the situation back under control.
All the gods have different plans to get followers back, your character was summoned by the Dark Goddess of Love to spread the joy of yandere in her name.

I'll start off getting my tentacles and practicing flesh sculpting before trying to summon anything. I'll start small, with things that my tentacles could probably handle if it goes bad and see if I can work out the science behind commanding my summons.

Well I don't think you can point to a single reason, there's likely several compounding factors. Though I think the ones complaining about not enough CYOA tend to be wrong, they could always do new builds in recent ones or bring back old forgotten ones.

High supply does allow people to be choosier though, both new content and old ones that get reposted. There was a time when any content was good because it was something new. Now we have new stuff so often people can easily ignore something that they dislike for sometimes ridiculous reasons. Even something as hated as Harem master got legitimately posted quite a bit.

I remember making some relatively shit CYOA that was both bad in design and content, and it got posted several times over 7 or so months. Now I can make something that is relatively good and well received and it will be forgotten in a month at best.

Not saying it's the only issue, but I think it has an effect.

I know this is a problem and I was just tickling that with my jabs. But it's also true that I don't think people are approaching CYOA making correctly if they dedicate themselves to only appealing to the masses. Getting appeal isn't inherently a bad thing, but it should just be treated as a factor to why you want to make something, and nothing more.

I'm trying to design my CYOAs to be more unique from this point on and am treating them more as personal development in terms of writing and graphic skills than anything else. The challenge is making these things feel unique and also having appeal, even though I think I'm sacrificing some of the latter for the former. For example, audit CYOA is going to be very politically driven with a different setting and theme I haven't seen much of yet, and my upcoming power armour CYOA is going to be very number crunchy and customizable. But given the constraints I'm putting these CYOAs in (you work for a higher power in Audit, or the sciency-grounding background for the spell-crafting CYOA I'm making), they're not as wish-fulfilling as most other CYOAs are. One CYOA idea I put on hold is s a simple Guard Duty CYOA where you're basically just a guard in a fantasy setting (or sci-fi) but you'd basically have to calculate the finances that go towards your guard unit with the income that you make, which increases per year as you take on harder and more prestigeous jobs.

At this point I've just realized that I want to take this route with exploring different things as opposed to making things just to appeal to people. I hope more people bring other new things to the table but until then, people are gonna complain.

While the thread is surprisingly on topic and not full of off topic shitposting, I could use some advice on a WIP

I've got two in the pipeline, Gangs of New Innsmouth should be fine once I find some good images for it, but I'm not sure about how my party builder is working out; mostly I'm worried the endings will be unsatisfying.

The premise is, you're a minor servitor of a goddess of fate and stories; your job is to pull the strings of destiny to bring together a Fighter, Mage and Rogue and set them on a quest. Whether the quest succeeds or fails is not as important as whether it makes for a good story.

You'd have five of each class to choose from from; so the fighter might be a knight, a sellsword, a barbarian, etc; you pick one from each class and pick a quest (ranging from high stakes stuff like save a princess to low stakes like save a prize cow), then go to the hidden pages.

Each character you choose will have a list of how they mesh with the other party members; good interactions earn a cohesion token, bad interactions get a tension token (ie the Knight gets along well with the White Mage, but not the Assassin). You'll end up with three token in total, and then you compare the exact mix of tokens to the quest you sent the adventurers on to see what the result was (high cohesion is more likely to succeed at dangerous quests, high tension makes for more drama and a potentially better story, but higher chance of failure). Make sense?

I'm worried that its going to come across a little too impersonal though, or that the balance between cohesion and tension won't work out right. At the moment high tension on a less dangerous quest or high cohesion on a dangerous one gets the best stories; is that too formulaic? If I make it more variable, does it run the risk of making the choices too meaningless?

Kind of, but nothing so concrete; the current draft definitely has a descriptor of whether the story was good or not. Save the Cow: 3 Tension Tokens makes for a legendary comedy of errors, where 3 Cohesion doesn't make for a story at all, just three people returning a cow and getting a free meal from the farmer; the Princess Quest plays out very differently, that kind of thing.

In the original draft the player was actually a bard forming a group, again in the hopes of making a good story, but mechanically that meant adding a whole extra layer of variables that I wasn't willing to do or making it so the bard had no meaningful interactions with the party at all in terms of influencing the system, which seemed weak. So I went with the divine servant route to explain why you're doing this and how without actually being a factor in the quest itself.

A bard is one of the rogue options though, but a bit more conniving than most; kind of like the Bards Tale main character.

I think the current problem is the quest resolution is entirely dependant on the tokens you get; each potential character interaction (Fighter/Mage, Fighter/Rogue, Mage/Rogue) has their own little blurb and description, but the actual way the quest goes is going to end up the same with different party members anyway; so the Knight/White Mage/Assassin party would get the same end result as the Barbarian/Alchemist/Huntsman party, because it'll end up with the same tokens even if the individual interactions are described differently. And I'm not sure thats what I want. The alternate is I think more work than I'm willing to do though.

I talked about it briefly like two thread ago, but this is a sort of expansion to the world I built up from Alchohol CYOA. The story behind it is mainly based upon three factions within the world; Law, Chaos, and Neutral a la Shin Megami Tensei.

Anon, anons possibly, were summoned here by a God that is Chaos aligned who wants to change the current situation in the world through whatever means necessary. That's where anon comes into play.

Due to your unusual circumstances, you have enough power to be a mover and shaker if you try hard enough. Chaos God doesn't care if you align with the Lawful Gods or Chaos Gods, but more that you do something, and unlocks your power.

From there you'll be able to choose how your power manifests, what minor/average and major powers your manifestation grants you, what faction if any you side with, your companions, and more shit if I end up making this more complicated. Depending on certain options, you'll end up being locked outta certain options while other options will open.

End goal is whatever anon thinks they can accomplish, whether that be becoming a righteous hero, fighting for true freedom, becoming an evil mastermind, or just getting themselves a harem.

Just make sure to include a small backstory that can play into certain plots like an knight who came from an orphanage after a bandit raid and then have a bandit who cut ties with his band due to developing a conscious but still has a price on his head.
