>>
Hey guys, can anyone point me to a guide about coupling Games Workshop base/layer/dry paint colours?

I am going to be painting Reaper miniatures, mostly guys in chainmail and plate mail. I also have some guys who will need green/brown colours for their tunics and cloaks.

Any help is appreciated, (((GW))) paint is expensive so I only want to buy the necessities.

I was digging through my bits box for 8th edition coming up and I found this. This is what dumbass kid me did to a defiler. I'm going to salvage it and make it nurgle (obviously) but curious what you guys think need patching up the post.

Plans are to fill all the seam lines and to build the front leg shields into full shields. I also need to find a base for it but have no idea what size it would go on
>>
Right, anon of the immortal lord here, last thread 1 other anon said he loved the model and the base but not the location of the model on the base.

If you are still around could you please elaborate as I would like to hear your thoughts on the matter

Though I won't be able to read the thread till tomorrow cos I gotta sleep.

I live somewhere with hot, humid summers and very cold winters so I mostly use paint on sealers. Never had any issues with it, just make sure it's not too thick or pooled up anywhere and store it at room temperature. Disclaimer - I exclusively paint/seal the plastic Bones figures so I'm not sure how well paint on sealer works with other types of materials.

Going to be painting up an ultramarines army after finding half of an army Unpainted on sprues still in my garage. Do space marines rule wise HAVE TO have 32mm bases? I have honestly got about a thousand 25mm ones but I don't want to start assembling them if they're incorrect.

Here is an example of the next figure I am going to work on, it's a (plastic) stone golem from the Bones Reaper line.
http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Bones/a-z/77171#detail/77171_w_1

Here is the link for my sealer brand. I apply one coat to the models I'm churning out fast and don't care too much about (skeletons, kobolds, things like that). I apply two coats to the models that I worked a long time on and are special to me but that's because I'm paranoid about missing a spot, one coat is probably fine. You have to shake the hell out of the bottle before using it and either use it in a well-ventilated area or wear a mask to protect yourself from the fumes if you are sealing a lot of figures in a poorly-ventilated area. No thinning required if you are using a brush, don't know if you need to thin if using a sprayer.

First three Iron Knights assembled. Did my best to get rid of flash/mouldlines, going to touch them up in the morning. Didn't realise how much of a pain the shields would be, they really limit the positions I can pose these guys. The sergeant's shield is wedged against his helmet and backpack, it was a complete paint to fit in.
>>
>>53522974
Ok, was looking at that brand previously, I can redo a primer and not feel bad but redoing an entire mini cause of the last step sounds like a nightmare. I was reading that pute gloss was the best way to go for the toughest protection and the matte over it to help fight that shine. But no thinning? Thats hard to believe, totally thought Id have to thin it and Im suppose you paint it on and not just smear it all over like a wash. Could it effect wash cause I had read on that too, so fucking paranoid.
>>
>>53521820

I really like them, the shields are a cool touch. Look like the shields from the space marine game, very cool.

I got a new painters award at my flgs for these dudes at their painting competition; so next year I have to compete in the "past winners" elite catagory. Alright /wip/, give it to me straight - how much shit do you guys think I'll get for making Rough Riders with Civil War army men horses as their mounts? I have a shit ton of the fuckers lying around and a whole mess o' IG models sitting pretty waiting for the day Rough Riders would be decent on the tabletop.

If the idea sounds a little TOO cheap to be viable, what are some alternative horse models? I really want to run as close I can get to a cavalry-only IG list in 8e just for the giggles.

>>
>>53520840
>>53520840
For a first model this is great and I have a feeling you're going to get very good at glow effects down the road.
In the name of critique, your paints are pretty thick, and the highlights, especially on the lower half, look like they were painted on with the side of the brush or just too thick in general. You want to just barely graze the tip of the edge with the edge of your brush, until it feels like you're applying individual paint particles.
Best part that you said it was fun to paint. A lot of people are monomaniacally focused on outcome and forget the act itself is supposed to be enjoyable.

I also converted that hand later on down the line because as if BTP wasn't bad enough, this was one of those minis that was made in Finecast AND had a staff. I told BTP to put the non-staff hand on instead (yeah, I even had them assemble it) but they didn't. Ugh. I also changed the base once the 32mm bases got phased in. That mini's been through a lot...

Also, here's an actual WIP
>>

Some people know their limitations and would rather the mini look nice while playing. Also they have the cash to spare.

I sorta don't get this. There are plenty of cool games that don't require you to paint models (like xwing)
Maybe it's because I discovered and played quite a bit of warhammer in tabletop sim before I ever got into the hobby
>>
>>53530166
It would be easy to adjust your current scheme to match the AG-Systems racer. I'm trying to imagine who the Comorragh sponsors would be for each Reaver
>>
>>53530184
Some people just like assembling and playing the game. Sometimes even just the collection aspect on top of that.

We each get into these hobbies for different reasons.

Plus things like X-Wing for example weren't always available when people were getting into them.

Also you should take a look at the guide for taking pictures, because yours is just not that great, making it hard to give actual advice. For example, it looks like the wash is still wet.

Anyway, i do like the use of raptor bits and the forgeworld kit on top of them. The colour that you're looking for is probably warboss green or nurgling flesh, depending on the tone of green that you're going for.

Are the stones/bubbled areas on the white also going to get yellow? Or some other color?
>>
>>53531518
I'm not sure. The yellow doesn't contrast too well with the white, so I might just leave them as is. The picture on the box has some of the stones the same colour as the hull, while others are painted like gems.

Do you think I should put a blue wash into the recesses in the hull?
>>

Reds could work for the gems on the white areas.

And yes a blue wash for the recesses would be nice.

Do you guys have any experience with vallejo matte/satin varnish in a bottle?
With primer I got better results brushing on gesso than spraying so I think I'll go that way with sealing as well.

I can also get liquitex instead of vallejo here, although it's 50% more expensive.

ALSO:
Do you use natural moss for terrain making? I've been on a huge craft market looking for a plastic one but all I found is the real one. Terrain making tutorials just mention 'moss' and I'm lost if it's supposed to be artificial.

Depends on the chapter and if you can get a stamp like that made I guess.

I painted my TS freehand but if I had to do something more difficult I'd get some decal paper and print them at the office or a good copy shop. Still, interesting idea, but I'm thinking more about stamping chapter markings for vehicles.

Hopefully the picture's better than the other ones too, I think I figured the whole lighting deal out now.
>>
>>53532796
It's not Devlan Mud, but it's probably better than all the others and I've fucking tried at least 10 different brown washes so far.
As for Nuln Oil, I'm using that on everything I paint.
>>
>>53532690
Yea thats what i feared.

Cant seem to get the ratio right. Sometimes it starts consistent but then i dip the brush in and the remaining paint is thinner then what i began with.

Damn tutorials make it look so easy.
>>
>>53532876
I recommend you use a (wet) palette. makes it super easy to judge the consistency of your paint.
>>
>>53532918

They are the blood of our saint. Nuln Oil is black and Agrax is brown. Just beware the curse of /wip/. You might do well to transfer some portion of the new taller Shade bottles into a shorter one so you can at least save some before you inevitably spill it.

>I loved Devlan Mud but I've run out. Is agrax a good enough substitute?

Yes.
>>
>>53532796
Just buy Army Painter Shades, if you can. They are cheaper and come in dropper bottles, so the will never spill.

>>

>>
>>53532796
Agrax is bullshit the new washes are vastly inferior to Devlan. Army painter shade is by far the closest in tone, but you have to done critical difference compared to Devlan mud. Never water it down, spread it out by thinning it with your brush, if you apply water to the army painter (strong shade) it will leave white deposits, unlike Devlan which just got better with water. Otherwise its a 95% match.

Good tidings anons, I need your counsel. I've been tinkering with this seraphim to have it be my pistolier for Shadow War Armageddon (and perhaps gunslinger canoness in 8e).

I'm wondering, would you glue the banner before priming? Even though it's pinned, it's such a small pin that It might need a fair bit of superglue and perhaps even greenstuff, so I would have to paint over that.

On the other hand, I want to give freehanding a go, and if the banner is attached to her, it seems almost unthinkable for me to get any decent results.

Also, I have my doubts about the base.

I don't know whether to put her on a 32mm base with a concerned imperial citizen pointing her towards some heretics (dark angels, obviously) or have her standing on her own on a 25mm base. I kind of feel that the 32mm one is more fun and characterful.

(I'd like to point out that seen IRL one can appreciate the banner, the bells and the robes flowing in the same direction, as will do a chain I'm planning on attaching to the citizen's neck)

Another question is the colour scheme. I'm thinking one of these two, with a dark grey urban base? I would like to try a snowed one, but that might be too much white. The left one would carry white bolters, the right one black, or red ones, to lower the contrast between the black and the off white.

>>
What color would a light brown t-shirt for an ork be? I was thinking something like whatever color the Guard uses for the khaki stuff.
>>
>>53540235

You actually want to thin less for highlights, but if the paint is thick, such as with Citadel, you do want to thin it down some, just a lot less than normal.

The paint needs to be thick enough to not flow and run everywhere like it does when you're not highlighting, but it also can't be so thick that it leaves more than a line of color on the model.

The rest of it is just practice, steady hand, cleaning up mistakes, and barely touching the edge of the model as lightly as possible to deposit a straight line of paint. Using the "use the side of the brush" trick where you can helps.

thinned the paint so much that is more water than anything, you can probably keep adding the same thinned down paint until it looks smooth but it might look too thick at that point
>>
>>53541149
you want thin but not too thin, and just apply it smoothly, wait for it to dry
>>
>>53525298
You dont, while it may look cool on the picture light effects never look good on the model when it is in your hand.
Paint it like in the picture related. Add a few heat stains maybe.

Same goes for power swords.

If you have the right amount of water in your wet palette, you should be able to thin the paint to the right ratio by spreading it around on the paper a bit. Also two or three thin coats will smooth that out for you.

>>
>>53542811
>(7 hours/$50)

What a waste of time, unless you honestly enjoyed it or hooking up a friend

Basically if someone said to you "would you go pound sand/fill sandbags for $7 an hour, for 7 hours?" would you do it? Fuck no.
>>
What do you listen to or watch while painting? I'm in need of some new stuff.
>>
>>53542920
I'm only working for friends at the moment, but I'm working on zeroing in my pricing. As of right now the rate is 9 per hour for assembly, 7 an hour for painting. I might move the prices up by $1.50 each just to keep it worth it for me, but I'm afraid of overcharging my pals.
>>
>>53542984

$10/hour seems like a very reasonable starting price. Maybe do flat fees like $40 for smaller figures and $70-80 for larger figures so people don't think you are Jewing them with excessive hours.

(i'm doing the Darksouls set next, so that should be a good litmus for pricing).

>This is an expensive hobby

It really isn't. Is 40K expensive compared to pocket change? Sure. Is 40K expensive compared to things adults spend on frivolous pursuits. Not really. Is 40K expensive compared to things working adults spend every month for necessities? Haha, do you even have bills to pay?

40K is only ever expensive when you add the words "for toys" to the end of the amount you spent.

I can't even pay for a single month's car payment or a new set of wheels with all the money I've spent on 40k in a year/several years/my entire lifetime.

Is this getting kind of shilly? Yes, yes it is. Could 40K shit be way cheaper? Yes, yes it can. But the market is currently bearing GW's pricing level for 28mm miniatures, and compared to the things MOST OF US should be paying out of our wallets every month, 40K is NOT expensive.

A car is expensive.

A house is expensive.

A musical instrument that's not a 3rd grader's recorder is expensive.

A $50 box for some plastic faggots or a tank is NOT expensive.

Going to be painting up her giant beetle mount next, I'm not really sure what colours will work well for it, I want a decent contrast between the two of them.
I've been toying with the idea of metallic blue (painting the whole thing silver then using blue ghost tint probably) but I'm not sure it'd look "natural" enough

Amazing work

Really got nothing else to say looking forward to seeing her on the beatle
>>
>>53547811
Really, it comes down to value for money.

$50 bucks for a handful of plastic army men you have to build and paint yourself FEELS like a weak value per dollar compared to say, $50 for half your phone bill a month, because hey your on your phone all day and it works right out of the box.
>>
>>53548592
So it's really just people using different definitions for the word? One party is saying the value is low while the other party is thinking they're saying the amount of money paid is high, which are two completely separate things?
>>
>>53548592

40k is such a shit hobby if you don't actually like building and painting. That's where the majority of your time and money is going to go unless you just play unpainted shit all day. And either way, you get to spend years enjoying them either painting, collecting, or playing, it's way better mileage per dollar than other things which you get bored of after a while or are used up.

Of course this goes for any purchase that you end up using for decades.

Starting my first army, i'm trying a colorscheme for my skavens, what do you think of this one ? (forgot the ears). Planning to apply lead belcher on metallic parts. Then, which shade should i use ? Would Night shade do the trick, or should i use more neutral shade like nuln oil ?

first time figure painting; got this older old one eye off a friend who had it in his closet since 2001.

how bad am I fucking it up? I know the base I did was kinda shite, and I haven't gotten to highlighting much of the yellow yet, but any critiques would be appreciated!

Hey chaps just got back into the hobby after a long time. Anyone try out the Citadel Airbrush paints?

I found Seraphim Sepia works best with skaven.

Depends on what you want.
Nuln oil will give it a very sharp contrast and make the shadows VERY dark, but if you want to keep that blue color you will probably need to go over the mini again with the basecoat.

Okay thanks. I'm going for a wintery theme, so idealy I'd like to keep a bright blue accent on the minis. But i lack experience so i am not sure which shade would do. The thing is i've seen lots of nul oiled minis that looks super dirty and Dark, and i want to avoid that if possible.

Then a blue wash/shade will do the trick, don't forget to do some highlighting

They're just thinner Citadel paints. I recommend them if you don't need them for things like drybrushing or edge highlighting because hey it's free thinning and guarantees smooth coats. If you're using them for airbrushing, they come in those stupid pots so you'll have to either pour them in droppers or buy a different brand, because fuck manual pouring/using a pipette that you have to constantly clean

Is there any trick to thinning down dried primer? I think I put on too much and it's a little thick.

>They're just thinner Citadel paints
Doesn't that mean you get less value out of a pot?
>>
>>53550607
>thinning paint that has already dried on a model
Wat.
>>
>>53550326
Then I'll go for this ! Thanks for the adv.

Oh and another thing, I have those bases with the gap to put the mini inside, how do am I supposed to fill it after the mini is glued on ?
>>
>>53550630
I dunno man I'm tired.
I'm hoping to find something doesn't involve stripping 4 more models when I've got 30 plus to strip.
>>
>>53550614

Yes it does, but if you thin with medium (and you should) it's a wash (not literally). If you thin with tap water, then yeah, you're getting less paint, but really dude? Buy cheaper brands if you care that much about cents per milliliter.

You have to lightly sand it with fine-ish grade sandpaper to remove the excess. Then you either paint over it if it's smooth enough, or re-prime if you've sanded down to the plastic/resin/metal.

Kewl, keep up Gork's work!
>>

Alright thanks guys ill buy a pot to try out and compare to what I thinned out. Ended up asking because getting the pre air brush paint is closer than picking up new medium. And I'm feeling fat and lazy.

testing out new recipes for the yellow and metal, how does it look? ignore the chalky drybrushed skin, this was a test model i used several months ago

I got some of that glorified brown gw crackle paint to try out, and I like it. But I want to wash it with something to make it stand out a bit better. Should I do black, brown or go full alien world with dark ass red? I'm leaning towards red since its a spot color on my scheme.
