So I'm thinking i should build an entire dreadnought approximation of a battle company. Something like:

3 talons of regular "tactical" dreads with mixed melee/ ranged weaponry, with each talon led by a venerable "sergeant"

1 talon of "heavy support" mortis dreads with autocannons

3 cc dreads, some combination of furioso and ironclad, for fast attack

3 contemptors for elites, one with dual kheres/ cyclone launcher; one with dual fists; one regular fist/melta guy

A librarian, a chaplain, and a custom built "captain" based on a contemptor body but wielding a ccw and shield.

My question is, do i have a problem and where can i seek help for my addiction to battle bricks?

I'm under the impression that all army "codexes" have been written simultaneously by an at least somewhat coordinated team this time? Thus hopefully dodging the powercreep/"author's favourite army" issues?

It seems almost every army sneakpeek'd so far has had a healthy strength and their old issues looked at? I get the feeling 8th will be great for balance and armies both having wide selections and being on somewhat equal terms in the competitive sense?
You youngins', still in the game, thoughts?

Personal bias: Only the orkz were slightly underwhelming, weren't they? Far from the across the board disappointment they've been up till now, but neither had they an OOMPH on par with the Swarmlord or whatever? Still, they're better than they've ever been for the last 15+ years and I don't think they'll be way behind or anything; I just think GW could've given them something extra...
But whatevs!

I think their morale test mitigation is pretty neato and fluffy, also they aren't supposed to have one big [spoiler/] guy who is insanely choppy, they rely on numbers with many more fert on the ground which are all fairly choppy. I get what you mean with nids, swarmlord's fluff is aids but at least the crunch now supposedly fits the fluff. I think orks will be in a pretty decent place this time around.

This thing costs 900 points.

On average, it takes 21.1 Lascannon hits to kill it.

It's good weapons stop firing for the rest of the game on a 1, so you have a 1/6 chance for it to do absolutely fucking nothing in every game you take it.

It hits on a 3+ until it loses 10 wounds, and then from there becomes essentially useless.

This is what new 40k considers "balance".

Anon who've managed to check all indexes (mostly orks and chaos) and main rulebook at LGS today.

My first thought is, that everything is shallow as fuck.
Almost non of factions have abilities related to their keywords, no rules for Forgewords on AdMech, no rules for Chapters in SM, no rules for Tau septs, Eldar Craftworlds etc. Nothing.
CSM, especially Thousand Sons, are fucked. Chaos have only 3 psychic powers overall to choose from, and if you manifest one of them, you cannot do that again with other psyker that turn. No special spells for characters (even Magnus), no special spells for gods or legions. If you burn down those 3 spells, everyone else can just cast a smite.
Horrors can be mixed in unit - so pink, blue and brimstones can run in same blob, but you need points for splitting them.
Orks got some issues fixed, but their small walkers like Killa Kans and Deff Dreads won't be seeing much game. Oh, and Stompa have whooping 40 wounds... for 900 pts, 950 fully armed because big guns and choppa is free.
Some guys hyped about their rules for Dark Eldars, IG guy was really dissapointed and started checking DE and AdMech rules as they played them form time to time.
Nids seem to be hot stuff of that edition so far.
AdMech is probably only faction so far with their gimmick already working: they can either pick or roll for their littanies (or something like this - I dont know I've never plated with them outside KT and SW:A), if they pick one of them, you cannot pick it again, but if you roll for it, you accept result even if you already used that one.

40 wounds is incredible if mekboyz can repair them, otherwise I remain equally unconvinced.

As usual with a horde army you have to see the pts, which we don't have. Sure the warboss, battlewagon and stompa are expensive, but they are our most expensive shit anyway.

I am concerned about how GW is pricing weapons, though. It appears as though they are pricing them based upon their profiles and not upon how well they can be used by the model they are given to. If that's the case then you'll never want to use orks as a ranged army because we'd pay the same for our big shootas as marines pay for their heavy bolters, but we only hit with ours on a 5+. The only weapons that come to mind as being great for orks are burnas/skorchas and rokkit launchers. I remember the scan in one of the earlier threads was misread as d3 wounds, but the rokkit launcher is actually a flat 3, which is great.

Does anyone think this new edition will let us go back to the good old days.

You know, when 20 space marines, a predator, some terminators and their transport was considered a good army.

Not 30 sternguard min-maxed with 30 combi-weapons in drop pods alpha striking your tanks, and oh +1 to hit because X and oh this special rule because Y.

Can we get some order in 40K again, it's just spiralled out of control. I want troops to actually be that again, the troops of the army, the core. Not a tax for the newest flavour of spam.

Magnus can move 24" with Warpflame, land next to character, slap him with either D6 or 2D6 plus 1.5 more mortal wounds, then charge something while autohitting thanks to Prescience with his 7 S16 -4 3 attacks.

It depends on how reliable he can get hat 2d6, but he does seem pretty powerful still.

Ork boyz are of comparable natural body strength, so they probably weigh around the same.

Ork boyz are about 6'5 feet tall I believe (unhunched)

And before you say pretty much everyone who plays WH is like that, you have to realize that the average players at my GW store are well, normal people of all kinds.
Pretty much everyone is an average guy and we have a pretty huge social circle even outside of the hobby by now. Everyone is friendly and usually pleasant to be around.
And then there's Guard players.
They come in, exclusively talk about the guard, about guard memes they found, reference 4chan all fucking day long, talk more about the guard, and you really get the drift. And they usually spout their alt-right rethoric in presence of kids and people that well, just want to play a friendly game without seeing any provocative swastikas or hitler models, and without having to hear the same old /pol/ stuff about Trump, Le Pen, or whatever is the political issue at the moment.
And don't get me wrong, I don't mind people having different political views as me, but there's a limit in how much you can bring politics into stuff.
And if you can't talk about anything but imperial guard memes, 4chan and politics, then you end up being a pain in the ass for anyone.

I stopped going to the local FLGS, because the 5 IG players kept scaring away everybody else, by being obnoxious little shits. They spent the most money bar none in the store, so the store owner didn't throw them out.

We just got us a set up for normal people, in a garage owned by one of the regular customers, and play there. Even the two Taufags are not even remotely close to the same level of autism that haunts the IG players.

Pretty sad to say I haven't met even 1 who was a normal human being. But of course, the HFY attitude practically requires an obscene amount of autism to begin with, so I suppose it makes sense.

Power 5? So they expect a typical mob of ten boys to be at least 90 points... also, power 4 for each extra ten, so that's at least 70, as far as I can tell.

Boss Nob is probably 10 points, which actually seems fair; he's got a pretty nice profile. Ld 7 is unexpectedly good.

There must be at least ten points on the boys themselves, so I'm guessing either shootas still cost a point or the BS/RL is 10 points or more. That's just kicking us while we're already down from the base cost...

That leaves 10-30 points for the nob's weapons. Assuming a power klaw is typical, that doesn't seem unreasonable.

Overall, it hurts, but there is still some faint hope remaining.

I'm really happy with the way Orks are shaping up so far. 3+ to hit, s4 base, really easy to get into combat, hidden PKs are back, I2 is gone, good psychic powers, KFF is back to an invul that affects units rather than models, burna boyz in a Bwagon is at least twice as scary (though more expensive), all in all I feel like Orks will finally be good.

I don't think the Guard are shit. Just the confirmed Battle Cannon is shit. Orders autopass is awesome, and the supposed 6" order range doesn't concern me because the most important order,Rank Fire, can be issued by the platoon commander who I always have sitting right behind the troops anyways. If I want bring it down or something similar I'll grab voxcasters which will undoubtedly extend the range.

Somebody greentexted a bunch of stats for guns earlier today and people seem to be taking his word for it. I refuse to believe anything that doesn't have a picture accompanying it, but my biggest fear right now is my tanks being ineffective. A Leman Russ could have a hundred wounds but if it can't kill it's weight in units over the course of a battle it's really not worth it, because Leman Russes are not built for much else than dishing out punishment and taking it. And taking punishment isn't an accomplishment unless it's own firepower makes it deadly enough to be worth shooting at to begin with.

So while I think this is more a generalization, there is truth behind things most of the time. My store has two IG players, myself and one other. I picked IG because I saw them as a kid and thought the tanks were great. I didn't start actually playing until I was much older. I enjoy the looks, lore and playstyle of Guard.

I enjoy the memes for them of course, but I enjoy 40k memes in general, regardless of the faction. The other player is more or less what you described without the alt-right stuff. he's very annoying and I do not speak to him about the game at all.

To that however I have good and bad players for every faction at my store. 3 Chaos players. 2 are great, dig the models, play them to enjoy them, one will only play deathstar lists and specifically looks for new players to stomp.

I also have 2 Tau players. one liked the looks of the suits so played farsight enclaves, enjoyed them overall. The other is your standard Riptide spam WAAC weeaboo.

Every army has shit players, some more than others depending on popularity.

Do the math. Krak missiles take fewer hits to kill it in the side armour than they did in 7th edition, lascannons slightly more and it can be harmed by small arms now. That's the side armour; the front is incredibly nerfed from what it was and you could usually count on at least half the shots coming from the front at least until you were right up to the enemy lines at which point it didn't matter.
Yeah, sometimes it died to one lucky shot, but it also bounced a lot more with no effect. Now it gets wounded more reliably. That means your opponent can allocate resources to destroy it with more certainty about what is needed.
While heavy weapons have become more expensive, the battlewagon has increased in price far more. You also have the issue that heavy weapons are a lot more convenient now, being able to fire reliably on the move (unless you are orks) and target what they like.

Orks have not really had any buffs, relative to the overall changes in the game (i.e. basic space marines increasing in value by about 20-30% while ork boyz have stayed virtually the same) and needed about a 50% increase in value just to bring them up to 7th edition space marine tier, so even if they have gotten a little better it's still not nearly enough to be competitive.

Every little nerf adds up. Especially when we've gotten almost nothing so far in the way of buffs. Our worst unit got buffed to almost usable and vehicles are arguably tougher and that's about it.

Meanwhile other factions get to enjoy everything becoming an assault vehicle (used to be our thing) pinpoint deep striking (used to be our thing) and going first in melee (used to be our thing). We've been massively and indirectly nerfed and every additional nerf they layer on top no matter how slight is just another fuck you from GW.

As an old Ref from tournaments, let me give you my input for whatever you think its worth.

Examining the wording, it seems like two very separate but related statements.

Statement 1: A unit with this ability can use the number of models in their unit as their Leadership value. Thus, at any time, a unit with this rule can count it's Leadership as the number of models in the unit.

Statement 2: A unit with this ability can use the Leadership of any friendly Ork unit within 6".

At any time, an Ork unit with this rule gets to count it's Leadership as whatever the number of models in the unit is. Thus, if another unit can use this unit's leadership, then the unit from which they are gaining the alternative leadership can say "our leadership equals the number of models in the unit", and thus, say, a unit of 5 guys could look next to them, see a unit of 30 guys, and use their leadership.

Seeing as so far all the ork stuff has the same leadership value, this would make a lot of sense. Small units are not being picked off by one stray shot and running away when there's a huge blob of guys next to them.

Thinking about it, this would encourage people to always target the smaller ork units, as they're so much easier to pick off with leadership.

Fluff wise, Orks always draw courage from the number of Orks around them. Makes sense for one unit to look at the unit next to them and say "Well there's still a bunch of us here, so what if one guy with a rocket launcher fell over".

Eh, it's still not as good as just being in smaller units. 5 marines take 4 casualties, last guy has to roll 4 or under with a reroll (89% chance) to be OK. Twenty orks take ten casualties (way easier to do; marines are 2+ in cover now while orks are 5+), they automatically lose D6 guys.

They have Chainswords too which give them an extra attack and they can replace their pistols instead of their Chainsword with an Axe. Also against a DC Squad all of their sixes give them an extra attack. So it's more like 32 attacks with 10 berserkers. Then they get to go again.

they basically have reroll to hit and to wound (with all inquisition units) against their nemesis:
ordo malleus is daemons or chaos
hereticus is chaos or psykers
xenos against chaos, imperum or "without faction"

they have massive amounts of options and can enter every vehicle. they have their own psychic lore too:

terrify: wc 6 a enemy unit within 18" has -1 ld and cant do overwatch

harden resolve: wc 4 a friendly imperum unit within 18" automatically passes ld tests

control: wc 7 a enemy character within 18" gets under your controll, you can immediatly fire a single weapon or attack a enemy unit as if the controlled character is yours.

scarab occult terminators are cheaper (around 207 points now for the base 5 man including sorceror)
their damage is similar to rubrics. they also have the all is dust rule and all have 2 wounds each (the sorcerer also still has 2) the sorceror however can only cast smite. exhalted sorcerors, ahriman etc. grant allied thousand sons within 9" reroll 1's on invul saves. which is quiet nice.

grimaldus grants a 6" aura to black templars that let their to hit rolls of 6 give them a additional attack.

Except Berzerkers are stronger than DC in the fluff so they should be the costly elite guys. They're hardly better than Ork Boyz at this point, they literally nerfed them to the ground with only 3 attacks with base equiment and having to PAY for losing an attack just for a miserable -1Ap and a +1S which are not worth losing the attack in the first place.

That actually seems pretty good, so long as the points aren't horrific. I note they can ride in vehicles now, which seems like it might actually work with the new rules.

Additional point of AP is an unexpected bonus. Nice, since I have a lot of lootas. Again, depends on price. Starting to feel a little better about the battlewagon.
