A chest with an extremely difficult trap. When triggered it shoots out a cloud of gold dust all over the person that triggers is. If they're able to get it open without triggering the trap, it's just a bag of gold dust worth about 50 gp all told.

It's not exactly a mundane container, but in my Meikyuu Kingdom game I'm planning to have the PCs discover a decrepit casino. Only the big slot machine in the center still works and if they decide to pull the lever, they will hit the jackpot.Except the coins coming out of the machine are Creeping Coins that will keep spilling out of the machine and trying to kill them.

>"You open the chest? Roll [save]"
>fails
>"As the lid swings open, you disappear from where you're standing. Once the lid is completely open it's revealed you are somewhat uncomfortably squashed inside."
or
>passes
>"You open the chest, inside you see a creature that looks identical to yourself right down to your equipment. Roll [save vs illusion or initiative if it's a doppelganger encounter]"
