>>Metagame thoughts?
Probably fine. I'd be happy with a little less Tron running around since they crush me pretty hard, but whatever.

>>Discussion: What card from another color do you wish your deck could run?
None, but I'd really like a bob effect on a 1-drop so I can get it with Ranger of Eos late-game for the grind. Dude can be a 0/1, I just need the effect (and it'd be nice if it were a human too maybe). Never gonna happen but a man can dream.

Why is Skred gaining so much popularity? Must be the price.

Related: I'm confused about how Ricochet Trap works with regards to legal and non-legal targets.

For counterspells, you're supposed to change the target of the counterspell to the counterspell. I get how that works.

Can you change the target of Path or Push to a manland that has yet to become a creature?
>>
>>53462658
No, the new target must be legal. If there are no other legal targets, the target doesn't change.
>>
>>53462658
>>53462751
To clarify though, you don't choose the new target until Trap resolves. So you could cast trap, then animate a land, then change the target to that animated land.
>>
>>53462658
You have to redirect the counterspell to the Trap, not the counterspell. It can't target itself.
>manlands
If it says "target creature," it can't target anything that's not a creature. Doesn't matter that it might be one soon, it has to be one when you choose targets.

Skred tech. Go nuts.
>>
>>53462764
>>53462751
Alright, well, here's a relevant question.

>Animate a mountain with Koth +1
>For whatever reason, I hold priority and cast an instant, let's say Skred targeting my own Reckoner
>They respond with crack-fetch and Push targeting Reckoner

Can I ricochet trap targeting my land?

I know in normal circumstances they'd just let the land animation resolve first because I would have no reason (generally) to hold priority
>>
Went 4-0 with Merfolk at a local FNM against Death's Shadow Jund, Bant Conpany, and UW Control AMA.
>>
>>53462921
You can only change the target to your animated land if Koth's ability has resolved. If it hasn't then you can't.

>>
>>53462981
Haven't really kept up with Merfolk lists, how do they benefit from Copter except for a little extra evasion and filtering out lands so you get more gas?

Seems like extra 2 drops isn't where you want to be
>>
>>53463179
>filtering out lands so you get more gas
That is indeed the benefit.
>>
>>53462981
The list I used didn't have any copies. In between Adepts and Seas I think that we have enough card draw as is and having more Coptors means fewer fish.

I've heard of it as a sideboard card for grindy match ups but personally I think Thassa is better in those cases.
>>

>>
If SFM would get unbanned, would DnT run a shell like legacy with serra avengers et al? Or would it just drop a few other cards and jam in SFM and 2 or 3 equipment and keep the rest?
>>
>>53464064
It doesn't matter because it wouldn't be close to the best SFM deck.
>>
>>53464103
Then what would be a top contending SFM deck?
>>
>>53464013
Step 1: Be a nigger
Step 2: ???
Step 3: KANGZ

Alternatively, realize that cracking packs, even if you steal them, is the shittiest way to get cards. Earn some fucking money and buy the cards you need, or if you can't save money worth a damn, git gud at draft and buy cards with store credit.
>>
>>53464140
The closest store is 30 minutes away and doesn't do store credit

Regardless, that was in response to "how to trigger modern general" so you fell for bait that had already revealed itself

Good going
>>
Why are combo decks like storm and ad nauseam so much cheaper than other decks with similar levels of competitiveness?
>>
>>53464197
The pieces to combo decks are not relevant to other decks

Pact of Negation, Angel's Grace, Phyrexian Unlife, Gemstone Mine, Ad Nauseam, Lightning Storm...these aren't cards that you're going to see in a lot of decks
>>
>>53464197
Without any research done I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the decks focus around highly specialized cards that have little to no splash value in other decks in the format as well as consisting of not as expensive cantrips to find and utilize the combo. Just a guess
>>
>>53464197
Because Timmys drive prices higher
>>
>>53464127
Hard to say but I'd try Esper contror. Lots of disruption and card advantage, clean answers like Verdict, Path, Push. SFM is essentially a better Colonnade that puts you up a card, or more with blink effects.
>>
>>53464370
I think it'd be killer in knightfall. They run it in Maverick, so it couldn't be that bad
>>
>>53464103
Wait, what? You can't be serious. It's one of the best decks in legacy, how in the bloody fuck does cutting 6-7 cards to make room for SFM package in esper be the best?

Are you retarded?
>>
>>53464370
You've never played UWx control, have you?
>>
>>53464370
Esper control doesn't run blink effects and it doesn't have a ton of stuff to cut in the maindeck either. It'd be a new deck entirely and even at that probably just be a much shittier esper deathblade.

>>53464592
I don't know about knightfall specifically but I think there is a Bant goodstuff CoCo shell for it.

>>53464127
Abzan would be pretty dank since souls tokens can carry a sword well enough and it's a low cost threat.
>>

>>
>>53463233
Don't think I've heard about that before. Honestly the only differences from the usual Merfolk list was that I had no Kiras, only 3 Vials, and 2 Mutavaults rather than 4.

There wasn't any special reason for cutting them rather than me being poor.

I'm playing 8 whack and as soon as my opponent sees the gobs dropping, they can quickly put down chalices preventing me from casting anything for 1, 2 or even both if they're lucky. I see other lists sideboarding shattering spree and smash to smithereens to fuck with artifacts but they're cmc 1/2 which my opponent is gonna block anyway if they know what I'm playing.
Could this be a decent substitute?
CMC 3 puts it outside the likely chalice desicion and the alternative is a nice if expensive cherry on top.
>>
>>53465853
In what matchups are you seeing the chalices?

I feel like a goblin 3 drop might just be better for you.

If they're artifact-heavy, Shatterstorm is probably better and will kill both chalices
>>
>>53462462
I'm running Cloudshift in my version of Norin Sisters so Ranger can be retriggered for 1.
Probably the closest you're gonna get.
>>
>>53465853
Shattering Spree is your best bet. The original is countered but the replicated copies are put directly onto the stack and are not affected by Chalice.

Do you think modern would improve with a change in the format style; as in, have people bring three different modern decks and before a match begins, each player presents their deck lists and then each player bans a deck list from their opponent and then you'd pick which deck to play for the match out of the remaining two.
>>
>>53466751
That is a terrible, terrible idea. I want you to think long and hard whenever you want to share an idea again.
>>
>>53466792
Whats wrong with it?
>>
>>53464806

>>
>>53466751
Obvious troll.
>>
>>53466848
Not that anon but firstly, between knowing the lists prior to round one and banning 1 of 3 decks it's just a completely different game. Secondly, this game is 3x as expensive as regular modern. It sounds like you're trying to port stage/character counterpicking from Smash into MtG.
>>
You can't choose the same target twice so a chalice on 2 with no other artifact still beats it
>>
How many people here play actual fair decks (mono green stompy / ponza / mono black devo / ect..)

I tested a bunch and they all felt lack luster, what are your experiences with them?
>>
>>53466950
Ponza is not a fair deck. Monoblack devotion and monogreen stompy are not competitive modern decks.
>>
>>53466950
Define, "Fair". I find, "Fair," to have a variety of interpretations. Burn and Jund (classic) are fair decks.
>>
>>53466950
I don't play them, so my experience is running over them.
>>
>>53466950
Ponza isn't a fair deck. Fair decks give you time to react to what your opponent is doing, and have opportunities to interact. Storm is the archetype unfair deck, it's fast and most colors can't interact on the stack. Abzan is a strong fair deck.
>>

>>53467747
Various UR lists, like Storm and Delver, will force you to use cantrips effectively and have a better understanding of your mana base.

I recommended Grixis Shadow because it forces you to use spells and creatures alongside a three-color mana base w/ graveyard and life total as resources.

Skred was my first paper deck, but I learned other decks with simulators. That deck, for exmaple, would be bad to learn with, because all it really cares about is creature control and dropping planeswalkers.

Yes

Did you just post on the Skred reddit too?

By the way, the reason the other anon said that about Planeswalkers is that Koth and Chandra are literally your win conditions -- dragon beatdowns are not.

If you want to "utilize dragons" more than Skred already does by playing Stormbreath or Demigod of Revenge lists, you're putting yourself at a disadvantage. "Dragon Tribal" (tribal decks meaning creature cards that synergize with eachother based on subtype) does not exist in Modern, especially with Skred.
>>

The competitive decks will literally never let you get there, especially with the mana base.

Most of your cards make literally no sense. Why a single Artifcer's Epiphany?

What is the point of 4 act of treason?

What is the point of 2 Approach of the Second Sun? Do you actually expect to be able to cast both of them? Are they discard fodder? You have no discard

What happens when you slap down Ink-Treader Nephilim and it gets counterspelled or killed?

What happens when a combo deck kills you long before you can do anything you want to do?

What happens when your creatures die before Ink-Treader even comes down?

You need to do a lot of reading about the format and Magic in general
>>
>>53468725

>>
>>53468747
And here is the post solidifying it all as shitposting
>>
>>53468747
Death's Shadow and Goyf are not 4 mana creatures that the "combo" is contingent upon. They are also 4 ofs, both of them

Decks that run Death's Shadow and Goyf have hand disruption to make sure that doesn't happen

Decks that run Death's Shadow and Goyf don't have a dozen cards worth of draft chaff
>>
>>53468747
Don't be retarded. DS costs 1/4 what a Nephilim costs so if it's countered you can fucking play another one, or play a good card like Traverse and then still play another one.
>>
The point of the deck is to target Ink-Treader with those effects, so when I use act of treason on it, I get to control all of my opponents creatures and win the game on the spot. Artificer is for card draw so I draw Ink-Treader faster. Approach the Second Sun is a sweet alternate win condition, it lets me win even if they get rid of the Ink-Treader.

Do you think Snapcaster Mage could smoke weed? I imagine him often, lighting a blunt or a joint (delivery system for marijuana smoke). He lights it with a basic plastic lighter. He takes the first puff. His eyes widen. He is surprised at the potency of the smoke, but he enjoys it. He enjoys the taste. At first, the burnt aroma is off-putting, but he soon learns to appreciate the aromatic, herbal notes present in the weed smoke. He luxuriates in the smoke. It surrounds him like a comforting blanket. As he takes his second hit, he marvels at the intricate network of woven "hairs. on the surface of the marijuana bud. It reminds him of a tapestry he once saw at the town museum. He is getting higher and higher with every hit. He's never felt this way before. He experiments with smoke rings, exhaling through his nose. He feels that his mind is awakened. He is in a dreamlike state. He feels comfortable. His muscles relax. He is surprised when he notices how thirsty he is. He has never smoked marijuana before and he thought the thirst inducing properties of marijuana were purely fictional. He drinks a glass of unsweetened iced tea. Baral has been encouraging him to drink unsweetened tea instead of beer or soda to help him control his weight. In the past he drank the tea with reluctance and without enjoyment. But now that he is high he notes the complex flavor of the tea. It is smoky, bitter, tannic. He enjoys it. He is amazed that something as simple as iced tea is bringing him so much happiness. He picks up a chunk of marijuana from the kitchen table. "I could get used to this," he thinks. "I've never felt this way. All of my senses are heightened. I feel serene, yet alert. I never want to stop being high. I want to be like this forever. I've fallen in love with marijuana and I never want to stop smoking."

So I went to GP Kobe. It was nice! I went 12-3 with Merfolk and got 66th place, with no payout, which was not nice. At least I got to chalice of the void lock Lee Shi Tian out of the game.

I'm pretty frustrated with how WOTC does standing based payout for events like this. Payout to top 64 in a 2800+ person tournament is fucking ridiculous. Especially given that there were about a hundred X-3s. If you went X-3 day 1, I don't think there was ANY way for you to make any money. Which really puts into question why they let X-3s even make day 2 in <3000 person tournaments.

Anyone /casual mtg/ here?

I play drafts on friday nights every so often and maybe go to a prerelease or two. If I feel like it I will buy a box of a set that I really like. Otherwise I pretty much just spend time thinking about cards I would buy, but I only have one friend who plays so it's not the best. We don't want to spend an arm and a leg, but standard metagame is cancer right now. What are some fun formats and stuff you guys do to enjoy MtG without spending a fuckton? Or does everyone here spend a lot and go to their LgS?

Help me enjoy MtG more. I always want to stop playing when I go to an LgS because of the autism and fucking sketchy other magic players

>>
does the new 4cmc black wrath have any implication for modern? damnation sees almost 0 play so I wouldn't think so, but I haven't seen any discussion for it
>>
>>53474686
Decide on a format and then set some goals. Depending on your group there's plenty of cheap, casual fun to be had playing EDH. If you like thinking about cards a lot you might enjoy building your own cube. You can do this on a budget by making a Pauper cube, which is a fucking shitload more fun than it sounds. You could also get into an eternal format, and or budget reasons that's going to be either Pauper or one of two or three Modern decks that aren't significantly worse when built on a budget.

If you goal is to get really fucking good at modern and not spend a lot in the long run I'd buy Affinity straight up. You can do it for around $600 if you buy smart and it's always one of the best decks in the format. It has an incredibly high skill ceiling. Playing perfectly with one or two Ravagers on the field is not something you do as soon as you pick up the deck. It would be a great way to improve your game, unlock modern, and get a working tier-1 deck that likely won't ever require expensive upgrades.
>>

This isn't really an option, a lot of Modern staples simply won't get reprinted in Standard.

I wouldn't advise just jumping into Modern until you know the format better; try getting a budget deck and messing about at FNM to learn the format. Often people will let you borrow their deck for some games so you can see how stuff plays.

I'm a big big MTGO fan, although the client is super bad.

If you don't balk at the idea of spending $1,000 on a deck of magic the gathering cards I don't know what to say. Just fucking wow. How the fuck is that acceptable to you people? Total lack of social lives? is this your only hobby?

A troll is someone who doesn't beleive what they say and are intentionally trying to create drama and fights

I'm not trolling, I do actually want to play magic, but I just can't accept paying $1,000 for a single deck. If a gaming rig is $1,000, a week's vacation to Canada is $1,000, you can get a fucking car for $5,000, how the fuck do you justify $1k on magic cards

what other hobby is that expensive? if you cant justify or explain the price tag you're a fucking wizards of the coast shill. everyone bitches about how bad the community is but this is a new low

Mardu Death's Shadow with Orzhov Charm, Thoughtseize, Dark Confidant, and Bolt sounds good.
>>
>>53474344
Where the hell did you see that
>>
>>53475208
This is why you use your brain. Don't spend 1k on a deck when you could spend 600 on a better one. Save money. Get a better job. People play constructed Magic because they have disposable income and they enjoy it, not because they were pressured into it by a JPN style image board.

Scroll to the bottom and check out Geissler's list. It's basically tribal zoo jamming a death's shadow package. I actually really it, hearken's back to DS aggro of last year.

I always wondered about running Vendetta lol
>>
>>53475181
It's a shame Sulphuric Vortex isn't in Modern.
>>
>>53475208
The thing you don't realise is that:
>spend 1k in a PC rig
>it's worth half that in a week

>spend 1k in vacations
>it's a service, not a product, after that week, it's over, you can either have a great week or a shitty one (bad vacations happen)

>spend 1k in Modern
>still worth 1k or more in later years.

MTG can be expensive, but it retains value like a motherfucker (unless you are a dumbass and buy the FOTM Deck and it gets a ban).

Did you miss the instant speed 2 mana Breath of Life or are you pulling my leg?
>>
Speaking of Flavor of the Month, I've had a special place in my heart for Living End, but I'd like to ease into it. I've got 4 Simian Spirit Guides and 2 Living Ends from my time playing Time Spiral Limited, but no Fulminator mages, which are the other expensive card. How necessary are they to the deck? What are some good budget builds?
>>
>>53475436

obviously orzhov charm is better, it just reminded me of it
>>
>>53475465
the only thing budget you can get are the fetches, Wooded Foothills and Bloodstained Mires, instead of Verdant Catacombs.
Fulminators are mandatory in the deck.
>>
Just bought the shit to make the BW Eldrazi deck that won Kobe. Is it real?
>>
>>53475558
I dunno but those cards all go in established decks too.

Except the Tidehollow Scullers which only go in c list decks

I'm pretty sure Abzan Company is the best deck in the format right now, and not for the first time since CoCo has been printed. Will they ban any pieces of the infinite? Would they ban CoCo? I wouldn't think so except they banned Twin and that was a whole range of decks as well.
>>
>>53475796
Not with its current metagame share or number of turns to win.
>>
>>53474486
it literally just top 8ed a GP http://magic.wizards.com/en/events/coverage/gpcop17/top-8-decklists-2017-05-28

That's basically the old linear non interactive Deaths Shadow aggro with some changes
>>
>>53475876
>a fringe deck top 8ing a GP means it isn't dead
k
>>
>>53475846
Even if it doesn't draw one of its 6-7 dorks it's still a turn 3 deck anon. Turn two Druid, Turn 3 Vizier ->Ballista for 20.
>>
>>53475796
Grixis Shadow is the "best deck" right now, as it's the meta-buster against JDS (the "best deck"). Althoufg, best deck is a misnomer. There really is no best deck (Not since Eldrazi Winter), just a bunch of good decks, a handful of great decks, and a crap ton of mediocre decks.

thoughts on rhonas in mono green stompy?
>>
>>53476560
Monogreen Stompy isn't competitive, but Rhonas is probably fine.
>>
>>53476665
yeah im trying to find non budget ways to make it more competitive. so far ive thought of scavenging ooze, collected company, and rhonas.
>>
>>53476735
If you run coco you have to cut down on pump spells.
>>
>>53476766
yep im trying to find a good balance of pumps
>>
>>53475796
I think the infinite mana on t3 is more of a problem considering CoCo was fine before they decided to print Vizier. Not to mention it hurts other decks but it's not like wizards actually gives a shit about that.

Suggestions to help vs storm?

I want to remake my Molten Vortex + Loam control brew, except lightly splashing black for removal. Terminate and Abrupt Decay are just so good. Now that we've got Modern legal lands with cycling I think it could be pretty legit, especially since the format's best deck is a creature deck.

>>53475919

Yeah, it's turn 3 in christmasland where their opponent is clinically retarded and doesn't have any removal/discard. Hope this isn't you.

What the fuck is wrong with you people? Everyone here just panics and throws out the possibility of a ban whenever a new deck moves to tier 1. There's currently nothing oppressive in this meta, but if people keep saying shit like this the apes at wotc will actually ban something and fuck up the format again.
>>
>>53478714
Rest in Peace (or any grave hate) can shut down Storm, or at least slow them down. Alternatively, give up, scoop, and embrace the sweet release of death.

You aren't wrong, but unfortunately that's the Wizards we have to deal with. They WILL panic ban cards. There isn't enough data to say if Vizier is broken or not. From my little testing against it I'd say not. It could still be banned and I don't want to buy in if that happens.

it's getting better with the counter company deck coming up. if you expect to see a lot of that, i'd do something like 1 main 1 side. otherwise, you can probably do without it.
>>
>>53472492
Depends on your definition of Spicy. I run 1 Tidebinder Mage and a V Clique main. The Clique was VERY good this weekend. Plus the 2 chalices in the sideboard. I'm unsure if it should be more or if I should avoid them in the future. Chalice is good against a variety of combo decks and Deaths Shadow, Burn, control decks, etc, but the Vizier matchup is SO BAD that we might need to dedicate more sideboard space to beat it.
>>
>>53476665

It's not competitive as taking it to GP but it's competitive enough for FNM unless your place is 90% tron.
>>
I just want to a have a decent slivers deck :(
