Is 8th ed going to Make Grey Knights Great Again?
>>
So now that we have the rules out there. When are we going to our hands on some armys
>>
>>53460495
Pretty much. You get the rare army that can do both fairly easily, like 30k Mechanicum, where my army has 100 Fearless chaff that can form a line across literally the entire board and sweep the while thing. In battles against melee armies that can quite literally be the entire front line. Thing is, I can also have things like Macrocarids, which are Land Raider Redeemers sans Assault Vehicle filled with 3+ armour Custodes carrying Assault 4 PE Gravguns, and artillery batteries, AND suicide drop Haywire, AND squads of 4W Kastelans.

That basically means I can do everything at once, and blast any strongpoints like the ones you mention to tiny bits, occupy and hold with heavy tanks and such and wait for the Levies to make their way through to me. That SHOULD be what Guard, Chaos and Nids can pull off, but everything gravitated to deathstars unless you made the tarpits truly gigantic and infinite, like the Renegades Unending Host. Hopefully that will change in 8e.
>>

>>
>>53460595
Well, GK are gonna hit on a 3+ in CC, and Force weapons do D3 wounds by default and no longer have to be turned on.
And no more deep strike scatter.
And being able to charge after deepstrike.

Do we know anything about Nurgle Daemons for now? Two Start Collecting boxes are enough to make a legal 1k pts army for AoS but I'm worried it will be not enough for 8e
>>
>>53460982
That's the entire point of it. GW didn't want to invalidate any armies that are currently possible with formations, which in understandable. Nothing is more infuriating than your army becoming illegal.

Command Points, Keypoints and Strategems is how you'll be rewarded/punished for how you use them.

>>53460987
Seems just to be a new pattern of dreadnought for space marines though. The teaser said "Space marine redemptor dreadnought", nothing about it being primaris yet.
>>
>>53461000
Or the 6s inflict no wounds. Or the 6s inflict mortal wounds in melee. Or the 3 niggas who are basically HQ characters.

>>
>>53461027
Maybe the plague marines are just way more resilient with their FnP than the primarines with their extra wound.
>>
>>53461024
The community posts were specifically saying "wait until you see the primaris dreadnought", so no
>>
>>53461040
>Guys, I can't feel my storm bolter!

You really took the old grey for a jog around thinking city, boi.
>>
Following the arguing last thread
Space marines are most popular
Followed by spiky marines then?
What follows that, what is non marine and popular, what will GW be cashing in on next
>>
>>53461052
But that answer made zero sense, because why would you not be allowed to just take the redemptor dreadnought and zero primarines if you like the one and not the other ?

It just sounded like a poor PR salespitch. Why would liking the dreadnougth suddenly also make you like numarines ?

>>53460948
They just don't have the firepower. Look at how many Death Guard models there are and how tough they are.

>20 poxwalkers with DR
>7 3+ sv T5 Marines with DR +2 characters + a psyker that makes them get hit at -1 penalty
>10 Wound 3+/5++ T7 blight drone with DR
>2+/4++ 6 Wound T5 Terminator Lord with DR
Meanwhile a Primarine costs basically the same as two Tac Marines but gets half as many shots, the +6" range and a bit of AP doesn't make up for that unless you're shooting at models with a very specific armour save and no DR

Hell even the Inceptors with their 18 shots are only doing
12 hits
8 Wounds
~5 dead Poxwalkers per shooting phase, or 30pts worth, meanwhile that Inceptor unit costs 160pts and you've got stuff like the Blight-drone and the Lord tossing out Mortal Wounds.

And then those poxwalkers can respawn their guys by killing Primarines in CC.
>>
>>53461082

Mortarion/Death Guard stuff will be released following 8th.
Hoping Imperial Guard are next up for an update.
>>
>>53461083
What are you on about?
>>
anyone else hoping chaos furies get new models or am I alone on this?
>>
Did some IG vs SM with the rules we know so far. Game was quick and intuitive. Battle cannons where good against both meq and dreadnoughts. Had an IG infantry squad wreck a tactical squad in hth. Charging to attack first is pretty good.
>>
>>53461068
I hadn't really thought of it, but 1/3 deaths isn't that far from 1/2 deaths. The +1 toughness probably makes up the difference.
>>
>>53461117
New models is always a good thing, but if I were to make a list of the minis I'd want new sculpts for Furies would be towards the bottom.

Will things like the Poxwalker curse of the walking pox require "reserve points"? In Age Of Sigmar i remember a lot of cool abilities like neferata's "summon a vampire when you kill a hero" got kind of shut down by reserve points, since they became inferior to just taking a vampire or summoning it with a spell.
>>
>>53461128
It's not the Plague Marines being that much better, it's the combination of the Blight-drone, the 20 chaff guys, and the characters.

The Poxwalkers being immune to Morale probably pushes them over the edge.
>>
So. Are the rulebooks really going to be cheaper or was that a GW lie?

So how badly do you guys think the various flavor of xenos lore are going to get simplified and butchered because we dont even have individual codexes anymore?
How much do you wanna bet that the ultramarine entry is gonna be longer than say: The tyranid one?
Especially considering that they probably donated 50% of the blood angels entry to the ultramarines.

What if Primaris Dreads are the half-mutilated rejects of the implantation process that still have their mental faculties, but are twisted abominations?

Instead of respecting their dreadnoughts, Primaris marines would then probably view them as "less" than them because they weren't strong enough to become "real" marines, in complete juxtaposition with regular Marine doctrine?

I honestly love any lore that creates a gulf between regular marines and PRimaris marines, to emphasize their "outsider" nature and their difference from regular Marines.

Son, I'm a Necron player. I don't care if they do squat the Sororitas. I'm just making the obvious observation that they're not about to squat an army that was a big part of last year's major narrative event.

If they're gonna squat an army, yeah, it's gonna be Sisters. They're a niche army, never a big seller, the model range is still almost all metal, and the last time they had an actual book as their own codex was Codex: Witch Hunters back in 3rd edition. Their 5th ed codex was a White Dwarf article, their 6th ed codex was an ebook.

But in 7th they are literally part of Codex: Imperial Agents, and the new Index Imperium 2 literally says "Imperial Agents" on the cover. GW openly said the indices are supposed to keep every single model in the current range in the new edition.

Now hey: they did the same thing for Fantasy with the warscrolls, and then squatted Tomb Kings, so if you want to make the argument that the index is gonna be the very last release for the Sisters, sure, go ahead, you could be right. But if you want to say they're getting tossed out in the transition to 8th, you are an actual idiot.

They won't be. Right now they have two mediocre squads and all those characters holding them back. Add another hellblaster squad and another hanging kitten squad, then maybe a dreadnought when that comes out and you have alot more killing power.

They will still be a little weak at holding multiple objectives but close in power with lots of killing potential.

Consider that it takes 11 shots with the Bolt Rifles, with the re-roll 1's buff aura from the Captain, just to do 0.95 Wounds to a Plague Marine, and that's if they don't have the Miasma of Pestilence psychic buff that gives the opponents -1 to hit.

Then consider that there's a Cataphractii Terminator Plague Lord with 6 Wounds and the usual +1T and FnP Nurgle stuff has, and a T7 10 Wound 3+/5++/FnP plague drone zipping around, and 20 FnP bullet-catchers with Morale immunity.

The Primarines are paying twice as many points for the same firepower as a regular Tac Marine with a few more inches of range and -1 to armour saves.

So even with all the talk from GW that assault armies are back, the random charge distance is still in, and assaulting unit still eats overwatch. And the limit of one overwatch per turn is also gone. The close combat maybe more lethal, but that doesn't help if you can't get into it.

I jumped on board with the 5th edition codex myself.

Back in 3rd they seemed kind of cool just aesthetically, but they were just killer robots. They had really interesting mechanics that made them potent on the tabletop until 5th edition's core rules wrecked them, so I was sort of glancing their way, but I was still just dicking around with Eldar on VASSAL while deciding if I wanted to actually get into the game.

When the 5th edition codex came out, I read it and finally had what I wanted. I was having a lot of trouble making real progress with the Eldar just because they were hard to play right at the time, very skill-intensive. Necrons were mechanically solid but also picked up some really interesting characters and personality, with the "ancient resurgent empire" schtick that attracted me to the Eldar but easier tabletop play and, at least in my opinion, more interesting intra-faction conflicts with the whole dynasty thing instead of craftworld dickery.

There's something to be said for the feeling of just marching a whole bunch of dudes straight from side of the table to another and drowning your opponent in gauss fire. I've been a bit out of the loop, but back when I was playing, Necrons were the best at shooting within the 24"-12" range -- any further and they could barely shoot at all, any closer and you could bog them down in melee.

>>
>>53461991

Necrons generally have to close to 24" or less to fight you because they have almost nothing that can shoot outside of that range.

Tau just blow you away from across the map.

So Cron players are at least trying to have an interactive game where you can actually do shit, and win that by beating you in the interactions, while the Tau are trying to prevent you from meaningfully interacting with them at all.

I don't know if that NECESSARILY says anything about the players, but it does suggest certain tendencies.

Actually Plague marines are more likely to wound a Primaris than a Primaris is to wound a Plague Marine.

Still it's 16% for Plague on Prim and 11% for prim on plague so the Prims still edge out with the range benefit and 2 wounds, though the blight launcher and plasma gun could turn things in the plagues favor.
>>
>>53462338
Probably something to do with Stratagems we haven't seen yet. The Faction specific Stratagems might require every unit in your whole army to share a Faction keyword, GSC probably ignore this and can take both AM Stratagems and AM Stratagems as long as they have equal Detachments of each.

Yeah, in an attempt to make sense of something that is, again, not actually supposed to make sense.

Sticking to one pronoun allows consistency and clear communication. That's important for a reference book like a codex. It's important to remember that the map is not the territory, though: words represent things but are not themselves the things they represent.

While it's useful to settle on one pronoun set when discussing Slaanesh, Slaanesh can and will be whatever Slaanesh feels like being at the time regardless.

They're great for a newbie. Ark Phalanx box is a nice combo of a normal Warriors box with a Ghost Ark.

You want to collect with an eye towards putting together a Reclamation Legion formation so you can make a Decurion detachment. The absolute minimum you need for a Reclamation Legion is an Overlord (or fitting substitute), a box of Immortals, two boxes of Warriors, and a box of Tomb Blades.

I recommend a Catacomb Barge in place of an Overlord, since it comes with an Overlord model anyway, but a footslogging Overlord is fine too. For your auxiliary formation -- required for a Decurion -- I've always been a fan of the Judicator Battalion.

You can assemble a baseline Reclamation Legion + Judicator Battalion detachment by getting the Start Collecting box, another box of warriors (or the Ark Phalanx), a box of immortals, a box of tomb blades, and two boxes of triarch praetorians. If you'd rather put your Scarabs to work in your new Decurion, you can knock off the praetorians and get a Canoptek Spyder and a box of Wraiths instead.

If you just want a combined arms detachment, then yes, a start collecting box and an ark phalanx will get you everything you need to begin.

its a vicious cycle, but I wonder if they would actually sell today if they had new models. I know we all talk a big game here but I wonder how many people would actually buy them world wide.

If it's like GSC, they will.

They literally sold out of one unit globally when they put them up.

Aside from marines, likely the best army for a new player. They're tough so they're forgiving even if you push them out in the open. Vehicles are also tough as nails.

Easy to paint, but that doesn't mean you have to paint the leadbelcher, you can be more fancy.

SC Box and the Phalanx box is a pretty good start, but the nice thing about necrons is most of the units available are usable in casual games, so buy whatever you think is cool.
>>
>>53462855

And I'm sure that's true, but these are good units anyway and will probably still be good in 8th. Plus, considering how 8th is like "DETACHMENTS FUCK YEAH", I'm guessing they're probably going to have some new Necron detachment that will probably be fairly close to the original.

If worst comes to worst, you just field all of these in the new Battalion detachment and have fun.

if you're looking to make custom traitor guard theres actually a few websites that offer "kit bash" bits for guardsmen, they're 3rd party but are made to be compatible with 40k.

In a casual game with just tac marines and a rhino, they're really straight forward. In competitive games it becomes trickier, but I assume a new player isn't going to be going straight into competitions.

>>53462941

The adherents of Chaos serve their gods faithfully in hope of one day being rewarded.

Eldar hope to create a god.

The Imperium prays fervently to a god who only occasionally answers.

The Necrons brought down their gods, shattered them, and use them as attack dogs.

It's better to rule in hell than serve in heaven, but it's even better to RULE HEAVEN, BITCH.

Marines are tough and hit hard. 3+ armor means that when you get wounded, you usually save. T4 means you only get wounded about half the time by most small arms.

You still need to try to avoid getting shot when you can, because a wounded marine who fails his armor save is DEAD, while a wounded necron who fails his armor save still gets a reanimation protocols roll, but Marines are still one of the few factions that can get into a straight fight (shooting or close combat) with most other infantry and last a long time without resorting to any gimmicks or tricks.

Marines also have decent low-cost vehicles, good psykers, and usually pass morale tests. They're not as forgiving of tactical errors as necrons are, but they're close, and their units and weaponry are generally quite flexible, so you can adapt your tactics to the situation and your marines will more or less do what you need them to. You still need to play smart to really make the most of them, but you don't need to be a tactical genius.

Keywords are basically overall factions: Imperial, Chaos, Tau, Orks etc. Then there are different sub-factions for some: Imperial Guard, Space Marines, Chaos space marines, chaos daemons. And then some armies (SM and Tau confirmed) have specializations. For Tau its septs like Firesight Enclaves and for spacemarines its Chapters.

All "powers" in 40k are rooted in some kind of super-science or the warp. Essentially in the past both humanity and other races had technology (now mostly lost in the case of humans) that far outstrips the present day and could acheive "magic" appearing effects. For example the shapeshifting powers of the Callidus Assassin are the product of a chemical called cameleoline that's not "magic", but Clarke's third law regarding "sufficiently advanced technology" certainly starts coming into play.

There were a bunch of them that gone beaten into compliance during the Great Crusade, various successionists have either been stamped out either by the Imperium or eaten by xenos once it was realised they were outside the Imperium's protect. Humans aren't popular in the galaxy after the Great Crusade xenocides.

And Lord Solar Macharius wiped out at least two extremely advanced Human civilisations by sending wave after wave of his men into battle against their AI/deathrays.

A couple of cultures in 30k were superior to the Imperium in technology. The Auretian Technocracy had a functioning STC database and equipped it's soldiers with Astartes-tier power armour, the Olamic Quietude had turned themselves into pseudo-infomorphs and had post-human warrior-constructs and the Interex had an extremely powerful fleet, had defeated and contained an enemy even Horus struggled with and soldiers with cybernetics that made them equal to or possibly even superior to the Astartes.

The Imperium defeated them all by overwhelming them with sheer numbers and fanaticism.
