>By the book, house rules, or homebrew?

AD&D 2e, almost entirely by the book, with a bunch of houserules scavenged from around the depths of the Internet and countless other rule books.
>>
>By the book, house rules, or homebrew?
My personal preference is to run the game by the book with homebrew rules adding new systems rather than replacing old ones.
>>

What rules/references are absolutely essential for making a dungeon? I go into work pretty early and can't actually clock in for a while, so I figured I'd work on a dungeon since I've been meaning to do it for quite a while. I run Swords and Wizardry since I'm lazy and it's easy.
>>

what do you have already?
>>
>>53457643
The only important rules are wandering monsters, travel speed, and encumbrance.
Beyond that, start simple. Build a point crawl before you build a map for it.

And here's a worthwhile blogpost: It's actually a great blog in general.

So far answers I've gotten:
- AD&D 2e
- DCC
- LBB D&D
~ LBB Traveller
- Stars Without Number
- Barbarians of Lemuria v1
- LotFP
- b/x
- BFRPG
- GLOG homebrew from that goblin blog guy

Why isn't ACKs™ on the list? I would also recommend Beyon the Wall

I want to try a hexcrawl game but as a GM I've rarely run a game where travel was a big deal and I struggle at describing travel and knowing when to just skip over things and when to let the players drive it.

Seconding Beyond The Wall/ Further Afield. Your question is tied into the OP question too. Playing b/x, lbb, ad&d raw by the book is worth doing to see what its like and what's going on, but they and a bunch of osr stuff is made with the intention of homebrewing and house rules.

Wolf Packs & The Winter Snow has flesh/grit damage, cave paintings as spell books and tribes as domains. Its worth checking out. Its also from here.

Into The Odd is a a fun stripped down osr. Character generation, equipment and magic are streamlined in neat ways.

I don't think I'd ever run Carcosa as is, but I've been taking some of the rituals and putting them into weird/darkbad parts of the game too see if anyone tries to use them.

That does seem like a better idea, but I've still got the problem of description and player agency in travel.

Like what do you guys actually do when your players spend 6 hours on the road? You've got your random events and encounters, sure, but how do you drift over that time?

>- Barbarians of Lemuria v1
Is not what I'd consider OSR, though I do like BoL. Also, while v1 is nice and short and sweet, the rules aren't as good as they are later on. For instance, armor is an absolute mess, and you have to use the full range of polygonal dice for weapons when the rest of the system only uses d6s. If you're gonna use v1, I'd recommend at least snatching the armor and weapon rules from Mythic (pic related).
>>
>>53458822
I'd say read through a lot of them and find the one(s) you like the most.

But if you just want a recommendation, I'd say B/X D&D. It's not really OD&D though, you'll have to interpret the LBB and supplement if you want that.
>>
>>53458917
Isn't Holmes the closest to OD&D? How does B/X differ from the original in terms of actual rules (I know the presentation is a lot different).
>>
File: BoL armor.png (66KB, 784x368px) Image search: [Google]
BoL armor.png
66KB, 784x368px
>>53458902
And even then, you might want to consider simplifying and constraining armor a bit, to prevent death-by-a-thousand-cuts style combat between folks who are all armored up. Mythic does armor better than Legendary does armor better than v1, but it's still not perfect.
>>
>>53458934
Holmes is a version of OD&D, but not everyone agrees that it's a good version. It was made to explain the OD&D rules to kids and new players.

B/X simplified the rules of OD&D and focused mostly on the dungeon-crawl aspect of the game. It's presented in kind of a boardgame style, while OD&D has this wargame-freeform thing going on.
>>
>>53458736
I ask the party mid week between games what they're interested in. More urban, dungeons or wilderness, to give me an idea of what to prepare.

Then I tend to put together a rough idea of what the terrain is like in the direction they're going and what season it is (marshy and snowing, rough hills, ruins and fall, etc), think of a few features that would be in that (a frozen methane gas swamp with thin bubbles of trapped gas, a burnt watch tower with cages, etc.) and put them on an index card or two.

Every 3-6 hours of travel I pick or roll a feature and ask a player to add something to the scene/what they notice about the place, then roll for random encounter and incorporate their description into it. Gives us things to put on the map, ideas I wouldn't think of, they take turns so no one is too pressured. If there's no wilderness encounter its just terrain, I can always use it later for something or the players will start to think of it as a landmark.

There are a decent number of terrain generators and word webs to plunder. Appendix B in the ad&d dmg is a good start. Just google imaging things like 'old woods' can give you a few ideas. Also going outside and just looking at what's there.

LotFP is Bx with houseruled encumberance and a variant Thief.
SWN is Bx with Random Tables IN SPAAAAAAACE! and good ref tips.
They're worth reading, but you can skim (or skip) most of their rules.
BFRPG might be Bx? Maybe it's AD&D? I can't recall.
>>53458199
ACKS is also Bx, though it adds a fair deal of rules.

>>
>>53459378
>Who did the actual writing?
Both of them. Gygax was more than an editor, but Arneson did most of the rules text.

>Because the original three booklets are....not good.
The shitty editing was more a Gygax thing than an Arneson thing.
The unwritten rules was more an Arneson thing than a Gygax thing.
>>
>>53458736
Good advice in this thread so far, but you also have to learn to read the room a little bit. Usually descriptions should be brief. When I first started GMing I sometimes made the mistake of going into reciting a description travelogue style (that of course I thought was very interesting), and people got bored.

A day's travel through an "empty hex" might look like this.
Players: We pack up camp and hit the road
>GM: "You spend another day marching across the chill, stony waste. Around noon you spy a wisp of smoke to the west."
Players: We note it on the map and keep heading north to the mountains
>GM: Alright, near sunset you arrive at a clear stream with a few scraggly trees where you might shelter for the night.
Players: make camp, with the usual watches

I make notes of features they discover on my map, in case the players want to find their way back to it, or I have an opportunity to use it in a future adventure.

If they're travelling a familiar civilized route, I might timeskip just to get them to the city or whatever they're headed for.

I've still got to write them up, but Sessions 5 and 6 of Tomb of the Serpent Kings are done.

Session 5 was mostly uneventful, though the knight did buy an enchanted sword, and the thief banked her ill-gotten wealth (sensibly). However, the session ended in disaster. During further tomb exploration, Spackles the Ilusionist cast an untested spell and ended up mutating most of the party.

The Paladin escaped unharmed. Antonia now smells better (+2 CHA). Franklin can swim better (+2 to STR for swimming).

But Spackles grew 4 new eyes and 4 new mouths, and Thomas died when his own leg fell off and turned into a troll.

Session 6 didn't go much better. A new Summoner PC named Missy E turned up and was recruited for a 2% share. Though the party found more treasure, they also walked into a terrifying swinging blade trap. Missy E was wounded, but decided to press on. Sadly, she was killed by an immortal Skeleton Jelly just a few minutes later.

In a desperate attempt to save, her Spackles spread jelly on toast and fed it to the dying human. She rose... as another Skeleton Jelly! She swiftly crushed Spackle's head and turned on the party, who fled, towing the illusionist's torso on a rope.

A Minor War between the Holy Grand Duchy (actually none of those things) of Sternberg and Lioness County, over a band of flagellants who wandered over from Lioness into Sternberg and were killed by border guards on suspicion of black magic.
Stalemate -> Stalemate -> Weather Disaster -> Stalemate -> Stalemate -> Minor Victory -> Minor Victory -> Religious Strife (2, 2, 4, 1, 1, 6, 1, 6)
The war began as a stalemate, with Lioness' initial aggressive thrusts stymied by Sternberg's line of border forts, enlivened only by a sudden unseasonal hailstorm that injured many of the besiegers. However, the tides turned when one of the border forts was forced to give in when rot set into their grain supplies. This was followed shortly afterwards with the capture of another fort through a combination of bribery and charm spells on the gate guards.
Unfortunately, any exploitation of the gap in Sternberg's defences was stymied when the investigations of a travelling inquisitor revealed the flagellants may, in fact, have actually been practicing black magic. With the very cause of the war in question, the court of Lioness was thrown into uproar, paralyzing military operations until winter set in, and the opposing armies took to winter quarters.
>>
>>53469755
Stalemate -> Minor Victory -> Changing Alliances -> Betrayal -> Minor Defeat -> Stalemate -> Minor Defeat -> Stalemate (4 5 1 5 1 1 4 6)

The beginning of the new campaign season saw Lioness still paralyzed by political infighting. Fortunately, the entry of a new player on the side of Lioness over outstanding land disputes, the Barony of Panthera, proved sufficient to propel the armies of Lioness back into action.

Unfortunately, the Baron proved staggeringly unreliable, with his forces immediately looting and plundering Lioness County as soon as his forces crossed the border. Although Lioness attempted to sustain the offensive regardless, this proved untenable, and they were forced to abandon their foothold in Sternberg in order to repel the Baron's forces.

Sadly, they were unable to do this either, and winter closed in with Sternberg re-occupying their border forts and Panthera still on Lioness soil.

Sounds about right. Oh medieval wars. So silly.
>>
>>53469877
Stalemate -> Stalemate -> Death of a Major Figure -> Magic Disaster -> Truce (1 year) -> Stalemate -> Minor Victory

The year began with nobody being able to make any headway. On the Lioness-Sternberg border, the situation was reversed from the very beginning of the war, with Sternberg forces unable to make headway against the long-standing border fortifications. However, the armies of Lioness were having no better luck against Panthera's cavalry, who were consistently able to outmaneuver Lioness' typical spear formations and continue raiding the countryside.

The situation got even worse when Baron Scarborough, a vassal of Lioness County, fell into a pit trap on a typical goblin-hunting expedition. His troops withdrew to from battle to return home and participate in the selection of a new Baron, leaving Lioness County in more dire straights than ever.

Then hell broke loose. Very nearly literally.

As it turned out, the lost flagellants were not only practicing black magic, they were part of a larger infernal cult that had been working on a vast ritual. Fortunately, the working of the ritual had been disrupted by the war, but there were still rains of blood and brimstone, wandering apparitions, the unhallowed dead rising from their shallow graves, etc. The war immediately ground to a halt.

After a hasty truce, Lioness turned its attention to rooting out the cult under the direction of the wandering Inquisitor Carrow. After the initial reorganization, several covens of the cult were eliminated before the onset of winter prevented further witch-hunting.

Goals of War Change -> Religious Strife -> Religious Strife -> Minor Defeat -> Stalemate -> Changing Alliances -> Betrayal -> Betrayal

The year began with Lioness County officially declaring war on the Illuminated Iris of the Black Eye, the cult that had so nearly recently destroyed the County. This was then immediately followed up by the court collapsing into recriminations and infighting, despite the best efforts of Inquisitor Carrow. Differences over points of doctrine exploded into street violence and assassinations as different sects blamed each other for the catastrophe currently unfolding. Surely god was punishing them for their wickedness! Only the death of the heretic would satisfy him!

The army of Lioness attempted to do their job despite chaos in the capital, but steadily lost ground as more and more covens crawled out of the woodwork and terrified peasants pledged themselves to the Illuminated Iris. The situation improved in the middle of the campaign season as Inquisitor Carrow managed to impose order on the aristocracy, then improved further when the new Baron Scarborough re-entered the fray.

Then, disaster. The Illuminated Iris had managed to worm its way into Scarborough as well, and the 'reinforcements' were for the enemy.

Then the Holy Grand Duchy of Sternberg declared that the rulers of Lioness County were clearly forsaken by God, and it fell to them to restore order and holiness to the land. Stripped to a skeleton crew, the border forts fell in the last week of the campaign season.

I must say, when I started I expected military disasters. I did not expect the total dissolution of an entire country.

To help with the whole "generate a war thing", I've come up with a slightly crazy idea.

Using ebooks of history books I like, I'm copying lines into a sprawling table. Here's what the "ruler" column looks like so far. It's designed to help you rapidly generate kings, deaths, war events, and other events, taken straight from the pages of history. In this case, early Byzantine history.

The Byzantines must be one of the best nations to do this for, I think. A history of the First Crusade might also be good.

It's a clever idea. You can extrapolate it to a good deal of other things too. Even with the just the ruler thing, it's very easy to tilt it to a different kind of game by just using a different source (e.g. myths and legends over real history).

Thankfully already have my absolute fave "we playing D&D now" mythic Britain origin already copied online:

>"The earliest inhabitants on whom traditions agree were giants. They are reputed to have been descendants of Noah's son Ham, and to have come from Africa in the second millennium before Christ and taken possession. A few English chroniclers maintain that they were preceded by descendants of Noah's son Japheth. But these people, if they ever existed, were conquered by the giants and all trace of them disappeared.

>The giants' king was Albion. He was begotten by the sea-god whom the Greeks called Poseidon, the Romans Neptune. 'Albion' is the island's oldest acknowledged name, presumably taken from the giant. Some, however, derive it instead from a princess Albina. They say she sailed to this country, which then had no human inhabitants, at the head of a band of women - perhaps as many as fifty - who had been banished for killing their husbands. They were all sisters on the paternal side. Their father is sometimes named as Diocletian and sometimes as a king of Syria. In their new home they mated with demons, and the giants were the result of these couplings, not migrants from outside. However, the only recorded ruler called Diocletian was a Roman emperor many centuries later, and the tale of the husband-killers is little favoured."

Death of a Major Figure (Ally of Enemy)-> Stalemate -> Death of a Major Figure (Ditto) -> Stalemate -> Goals of War Change -> Stalemate -> Minor Defeat -> Stalemate -> Major Defeat -> Stalemate -> Minor Defeat -> Major Victory

The War has expanded! The Hierophant has assembled a force from a dozen provinces to clean out the rot that has taken root in Lioness County and its surroundings. Hailing from everywhere from the Holy Grand Duchy of Sternberg to the Land of Blue Towers, surely nothing could stand in the way of this force!

It certainly seemed that way at the very beginning of the campaign season, when Inquisitor Carrow and the last remnants of the Lioness army managed to kill two of the High Priests of the Illuminated Iris of the Black Eye.

However, things started to come apart when the combatants decided to split apart Lioness County between them as vassal baronies, rather than restore the 'rightful rulers' as had previously been intended. This resulted in the different armies splitting up to take 'their' land. This proved to be catastrophic.

Divided, the crusaders proved vulnerable to defeat in detail. The army of the Viscomte de Fife was overwhelmed by partisans in a night attack, gutted in their sleep. The Baron of Panthera was outflanked and driven from the field by the Knights of Scarborough.

Total catastrophe was only prevented by the Duke of Sternberg rallying the allied forces to his flag. He lured the now-overconfident cultist horde into open battle and caught them between his dug-in infantry and heavy cavalry. With the Paladins accompanying the crusade nullifying the enemy's unholy magic, the mob was decisively crushed in a stunning reversal of fortune.

With both sides badly savaged and winter closing in, the crusade withdrew to Sternberg's border forts and settled in for a long war.

Death of a Major Figure (Ally of Leader) -> Stalemate -> Changing Alliances -> Betrayal -> Stalemate -> Siege -> Betrayal -> Siege -> Stalemate -> Siege -> Siege -> Goals of War Change

The new campaigning season began with a series of falling-outs among the crusaders. The Lord of the Blue Towers died due to complications of a previous wound, prompting that state's withdrawal. This was followed by disputes about how to divide up Lioness County upon victory. Factions began to form among the crusade force.

Then the Barony of Pantera decided that now was as good a time as any to pursue its land dispute with the Holy Grand Duchy of Sternberg, and launched a surprise attack.

With the crusade distracted by that bit of drama, the Illuminated Iris turned their attention to Svanna- the capital of Lioness County and last remnant of that once-proud state. The crusade attempted to mount a relief expedition, but it was a short siege. Betrayal opened the gates, and the last remnant of Lioness County was overwhelmed.

With the chance to catch the force of the Illuminated Iris between themselves and the walls of Svanna gone, the crusade withdrew back to the border forts. The situation quickly deteriorated into a series of sieges and reliefs, as the Illuminated Iris attempted to trap the crusaders in their castles and the crusaders in turn tried to crush them in the open field. As winter set in, the remaining leaders of the crusade convened to re-examine the course of the war...

Stalemate -> Death of a Major Figure (Enemy Leader)-> Weather Disaster -> Stalemate -> Death of a Major Figure (Leader)-> Stalemate -> Stalemate -> Stalemate -> Stalemate -> Stalemate -> Magic Disaster -> Stalemate

The year began with the continued Siege of the Border, as it had come to be known. The death of the Grand Warlock at the hands of Inquisitor Carrow brought renewed hope to the crusade, but any attempt to take advantage was stymied by a week-long rainstorm that prevented any movement.

The news of the death of the Hierophant from choking on a walnut devastated the morale of the crusade, preventing any offensive action. The Siege of the Border lengthened, with nothing happening until the very end of the campaign season.

Then, all hell broke loose. Again. Although the powers of the priests and paladins accompanying the crusade shielded the army from the worst of it, they were forced to withdraw from Lioness County back into Sternberg. Lioness burned behind them.

I've been GMing the Caverns of Thracia (using Swords and Wizardry) for a while now, and my players are getting pretty close to clearing it out (they pretty much genocided the 3rd floor through judicious use of lamp oil and the automatic crossbow you can steal elsewhere so now it's just the final level to go). We're almost certainly going to take a hiatus after this, but what's another dungeon I can run to get a similar experience? It's been an amazing time for all involved.

If they're high enough level after all that, you could jump right into Dark Tower.
>>
>>53477928
I think they're around level 4 (hard to tell, as people die a lot so the levels are nowhere near consistent). Honestly they're pretty clearly outclassed by most of the monsters at this point; they mostly survive with ingenuity, fire, tactical retreats, and that fucking machine gun. Knowing the group, they might want to start over with new chars anyway.
>>
>>53478059
Well if they stick with the current characters, then it sounds like they could probably handle Dark Tower fine.

Stalemate -> Stalemate -> Stalemate -> Minor Defeat -> Stalemate -> Magic Disaster -> Stalemate -> Minor Victory -> Stalemate -> Stalemate -> Stalemate -> Magic Disaster

The final year of the war consisted mainly of the crusaders standing by and watching as Lioness County disintegrated. Whatever process the Illuminated Iris of the Black Eye had set in motion, they did not seem to control it anymore. Bizarre phenomena stalked the land; men turned into salt, stars fell, death was no release. A single attempt to sally across the border, more of an information-gathering attempt than anything, staggered back with only half its number remaining. The one bright point was the surrender of the Duchy of Panthera, and it agreeing to pay reparations for its sudden betrayal two years ago.

It was a small comfort, compared to the destruction of a state. The crusaders tried to care for the refugees streaming across the border as best they could.

And thus the war ended- with a bang, and then a whimper.

So. From start to finish, the Deluge of Lioness County took eight years, involved six factions I bothered giving names, and killed a whole shitload of people. Moral of the story: war sucks.

My setting has 1gp = 10sp = 100cp

The gold pieces currently in circulation are about 10% gold. Silver pieces vary, from silver-washed coins made mostly of base metals to actual (much smaller) silver pieces. Copper pieces vary from actual copper to old buttons to brass. Any gold piece more than a century old is worth 3-10 gold pieces these days due to adulteration of the currency.

There are also:
Bronze Groats
Bridge Tokens
Promissory Notes
Marriage Licenses
Courier Chits
and Foreign Coins in use in most of the setting.

I generally don't use alignments.
However when I do I tend to present them as religious/socio-cultural frameworks. Basically, mortals are incapable of truly belonging to any alignment as long as they're alive but they can try really hard to emulate their ideals or just pretend. Meanwhile, outsiders have very definite locked alignments.

Got a crazy idea for a rules lite osr game.
3 ability scores that boil down to combat/non-combat/saving throws.
All +/- modifiers are converted to Advantage/disadvantage. So the net of all your modifiers comes down to if you roll with advantage or not.
Skills = if you have it you get +ADV. If you don't -ADV.
Fighters always have +ADV to hit creatures of <=HD.
Etc.

Worth exploring?
>>
>>53483469
http://anydice.com
This is pretty much your only option.

Read the side-bar stuff.
Do anything complicated, and it yells at you about taking to long and axes the calculation.
>>
>>53483230
>What's a good probability calculator for things like the chances of rolling max on a d6 with two rerolls?
Your chance to roll at least one 6 given 3 rolls equals the inverse of your chance *not* to roll any 6s. Your chance not to roll any 6s = 5/6 * 5/6 * 5/6. That's .5787%. 1 - .5787 = .4213. So there's your chance to roll max: 42.13%

Or you could just enter this on anydice.com:
output [count {6} in 3d6]

Hit "calculate", then click the "at least" button, because you're interested in your chances of getting at least one 6.

A link to the results (though I think you still have to hit the "at least" button yourself): http://anydice.com/program/1065

Alternately, for something that's maybe a bit easier to interface with, but less flexible for other tasks, use a binomial calculator, like one of the following:
http://stattrek.com/online-calculator/binomial.aspx
http://onlinestatbook.com/2/calculators/binomial_dist.html
http://www.di-mgt.com.au/binomial-calculator.html
>>
>>53483595
For the binomial calculators, "n" is your number of trials (3, since you're looking at 3 rolls) and "p" is your probability of success on each roll (so 1/6 = .1667). Then you want to look at what your chances of getting => 1 success.

Anyway, Ruler Table #1 is done. If you need a king, prince, queen, empress, or mad baron in a hurry, give it a roll.

The sentences listed are designed to be inserted into a "historical biography" of your NPC. They sound like something you'd read in a history book... because that's what they are.

>"do as I say, not as I do" - ultimately probably ineffectual but of decent intention and throwing himself into grand projects suggested to him

It looks pretty good! That's room for a semi-sympathetic king with a lot of flaws and a powerful dynastic struggle too.

In Labyrinth Lord 10 coins weight 1 pound. Help to change it reasonably. Maybe 50 coins=1 pound?
>>
>>53487677

50 to a pound is how 3.5 does it, but keep in mind that the 10 to a pound weight was chosen for a few reasons that your changing will have consequences on. Primarily, coin is how the PCs gain XP in LL. 1 for 1. So by lightening the load you're making it trivial for them to gather and transport that coin back to a secure location.

Most of the play in OSR games arises from not fighting but actually avoiding conflict, and one of the complications of transporting coin is that it opens you up to banditry, monster ambushes, etc.

And while we're at it, anyone interested on making a foray into Fantasy Setting Generators? I'm developing one right now based off of SWN's World Tags and this dude Hafwit's post at RPG.Net.

So far, I haven't done much original work yet, but I'm hoping the idea for Randomly or Procedurally Generated Fantasy Settings catches on.
>>
>>53490555
Got any examples? I don't know that guy and I haven't played SWN yet.
>>
>>53490571
World tags are generally vague terms for traits and / or features of interest on planets, stuff like "Psychic cult" "Freak Weather" "Hostile Biosphere" "Dome Cities" stuff like that. Each one gives a little paragraph of setting lore and some hints as to what archetypes fit it for NPCs and Adventure hooks.
>>
For Hafwit's idea, go here: https://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?575689-Random-Fantasy-Setting-Generator
>>
>>53490850
It's way too big in scale IMO and I'm a huge fan of random gen. This isn't the stuff I need random gen for or that it works best for, nor is it novel.
>>
That's true. I tried messing around with it for playing Scarlet Heroes solo and it certainly does ad a lot of excess baggage.

Still, I think the idea itself, and not the execution we see here with hafwit, deserves attention. I've been thinking about it a whole lot and I think randomly generating a setting would be great for deconstructing assumptions we make about fantasy and how we might be inspired to avert, subvert, or invert said assumptions.
>>

>>53493508
Yeah and/or this. The Deep Forest would be neat too.
>>
>>53491565
I think a random gen engine is about the best thing you can bring to a setting, sure. As long as everything generated works you have a chaotic element that no-one at the table can predict and that makes things interesting. But I don't usually need it for a whole setting. It's more like 'there's [thing] over here, let's roll dice to see what [thing] is like'

I would echo the Microscope recommendation in >>53493508

The problem with trying to generate randomly from tables is that tables already start with some implicit assumptions. If you roll for a ruler's death on a table you've already made an assertion that a ruler exists and that he was assassinated.

Right now the plan is to give you a few names (so you can populate the ruler and their important family members as necessary), some epithets/titles (for embellishment), length of reign, their major status symbol (big palace, obscure knowledge, powerful royal guard, diverse harem, whatever), a big problem they faced during their reign (slave revolt, civil war, regular war, etc.), up to 2 interesting quirks about them and their reign, and how their reign ended.

So far I've got a pretty good little sub-generator going for middle-eastern-flavored nobles (I can throw up some examples if you like), so expanding it to encompass more regions is next on the list.

I'm looking to start a game of DCC, and I'm disappointed of the lack of lynch mob funnel adventures. You'd think that getting together a dozen or more unwashed peasants, it'd be just natural to add in a whole lot of torches and pitchforks?

Are there any other good adventure modules out there that I could adapt to this purpose?
>>
>>53502483
Check the table on page 60. Find your class and level in the left three columns then follow the right to the right until you reach the column of the AC you want to hit. That number is the result on the d20 you need to hit.

For example, if you are a level 3 fighter you need a roll of 15 to hit armor class 3.

I like asking /osrg/ because you guys are interested in the psychology of play & discussing the merits of gameplay ideas independent of their systems.

My biggest question is: How do you make a cityscape gameable?

I know that sounds like a ridiculous question, and that Zak Sabbath scratched the surface in Vornheim (particularly in the "city crawl" section) but this hardly seems like a feasible/approachable idea to run the guts of an entire city scape.

I know that in a lot of 3.x modules (you'll have to forgive me, that's the system I came from) they tend to favor abstract rules, particularly gather information rolls to glean important information, and while this system works for smaller settlements or for games where nothing really happens in the city, it isn't a really great system either, and I tend to prefer less abstract game systems that the players don't have to deal with.

Usually, the way I run it is by coming up with districts, writing about the general character of them and keying a few important buildings/NPCs, it usually ends up feeling a lot like Gabriel Knight or other point and click interfaces that require the players to "unlock" locations on the map as they learn of them, but I'm hardly convinced that this is the best system, and I'm ABSOLUTELY certain that a crawl like Wizardry or Bards Tale isn't feasible either.

I don't know, what do you guys think?
>>
>>53502941
Yup, I saw the table, but I'll probably be running for other people who've only played editions with 5e and checking a table may feel too cumbersome

>How do you make a cityscape gameable?
Well, wouldn't that depend what time of game you want?
Is the city the heart of the game or just a frequent locale? Are the players going to primarily be interacting with a certain sphere of society (criminals, rich, religious, poor, merchants, etc.)? What kind of city is it, both in terms of race and government?
>>
>>53503198
I thought that as well but actually I ended up preferring the table because when you use descending AC it's just a lot easier than trying to do THAC0-like math. I'd say give it a try once first before writing it off.

Experience G.P.
Dice Result Point Value Sale Value
78-79 Wand of Max 6,000 30,000
80-81 Wand of Min 5,000 25,000
82 Wand of Minimax 10,000 50,000

Wand of Max: the wand discharges a scintillating
purple cone 30' wide by 60' long which confers on each
creature in its area of effect the property of always
rolling a maximum possible value on any to-hit, damage,
or saving throw rolls. The effect lasts for 2-12 rounds
or 12 rounds if the wand wielder has been subjected to
the effects of the wand.

Wand of Min: the wand coughs out a canteloupe-size
ball which streaks out to the desired range, up to 12", and
burst in a fiery yellow blast, debilitating all creatures
within a 3" range by causing them to always roll a minimum
possible value on any to-hit, damage, or saving throw
rolls. However, a successful save against rod, staff, or
wand will will avoid the effect.

Wand of Minimax: a silvery ray springs forth, up to 9",
causing any creature struck to be unable to engage in
combat before finding the minimax optimal solution for
conducting the combat. The free variables to consider
are selection of weapon, order of battle, choice
of target, and condition for retreat. High-intelligence
creatures (INT 18) will be delayed for only 1 round, but
average intelligence creatures (INT 9-12) will require
two turns. Lower intelligence creatures will require
six turns as they brute-force approximate the solution
with simulation.

I would actually like various approaches for a variety of cities. For my own purposes, I will say that my city is the heart of the game, but I'd be interested to hear what approaches you'd take.
>>
>>53503186

Into the Odd breaks down different areas of the city into tables. Basically you make up a bureau or district of the city and grab a table of things that happen often in it.

You could also go with a more structured neighborhood crawl style game; plot out your city into distinct areas and give each one enemies, treasures, places of note and so on.

>Yeah, the real issue is making it detailed enough to feel like it gives you original and useful results while also not making it so overburdened that it's a hot mess.

I like the idea of a set of pre-printed sheets. Like 4 family trees per letter sized sheet of paper. Each one has a space for a family crest, a brief family tree (only living people, maybe one dead guy who is a ghost), along with descriptions like "scheming uncle" or "deaf youngest son". And then you roll extra attributes (if you want) off a Ruler-type table.

>For my own purposes, I will say that my city is the heart of the game,
basically that thing you said earlier about districts, but instead of
>point and click [...] the players to "unlock" locations on the map as they learn of them,
prepare a note-sheet will all major locations ahead of time.

Send it to all the players ahead of time.
Assume they won't read it and print off a copy to give each player.
Very very broadly skim it at the start of the first session.

Put 2 or 3 names (with one sentence descriptions) on the note-sheet for every type of business you expect the players to interact with.
Put non-common locations (thieves guild, etc.) on alll the sheets if anyone's class of background justifies knowing it.

Don't put it on the sheet, but have a Random Encounter for each district at each time of day.
Beyond the city is a point crawl. NOT A HEXCRAWL. Hexcrawls are about exploration. Point crawls are about travel.
Your game takes place in the city. "Exploration" (rumor gathering) happens in the city.

If you *must* hexcrawl, do it episodically. You point crawl down the river, to the village, to the road, through the swamp, to the port.
The port takes you to an island, and the island is a hexcrawl. The way back to the city is just the port and the road.

>Send it to all the players ahead of time.

I learned long ago that players won't read /shit/ about your world unless it's also about them.

I just hand everyone a note card with "Lies, Truths, and Rumours" on it, and then plonk down a city map.

Then I luxuriously describe things, but interactively. Orphans to chase, dogs to scowl at, buildings to fear, things to go "wtf" at. The usual. Try and make the city real. Evoke real-life stuff. Smells are great for this. "The city smells like boiled piss" or "this room smells musty, like your grandmother's linen drawer".

>Don't put it on the sheet, but have a Random Encounter for each district at each time of day.

Yup. There are loads of good ones online. Against the Wicked City and Vornheim are 2 top contenders.

>>53503186
Most of the time the point-crawl or neighbourhood method you describe is more than sufficient. Add in a table of random encounters within the city if you want PCs to have some sort of encounter.

If you want to make any landscape into a "crawl", you need to divide it into abstractions of space - either overlay a square or hex grid on top. This turns the "city" into an explorable space like the dungeon or wilderness, but will also slow your game to a crawl as then you need to develop a "citycrawl" procedure. This gets really tedious when all you want to do is just visit the blacksmith to get your equipment repaired.

Eh, depends on how good you want them to be to count. I think you can defend Thieves of Fortress Badabaskor, Temple of Ra Accursed By Set, Book of Treasure Maps and even Wraith Overlord on some levels, but none of those reach Caverns level at all. Neither does Tegel Manor, of course, so...

Verbosh is good for what it is as well, but what it is isn't an adventure specifically so much as it's a mini-setting or a starting area.

To be honest, personally I tend to think the Paul Jaquays adventures are exceptions based on Jaquays' exceptional skills, and not typical of what Judges' Guild was good at, which is to provide material for the referee to make his own adventures. The maps and sparse setting stuff in Wilderlands, the empty dungeon maps in the CSIO set and so on are great starting points to work from. The same with the implied adventures in the City-State itself; e.g. there's no module called "Looting the Temple of the Gargoyle", the temple is just on the map and the contents are specified in the booklet so if the PCs want to hit the temple you can run that yourself with ease (and without it becoming some overcomplicated dungeoncrawl or keyhunting procedure that doesn't make sense except as a way to fill 24 pages).
