Once saw a video of a moose drinking beer from a puddle after a kegger next to a river that had a beaver damn in it. We had canadian bacon cooked on the bbq the night before and there was a ton of ketchup/all dressed chips.

>mythology
Strictly aborignal since canada was colonized by European Christians. The natives have shit loads of stories regarding their animism/spirituality. They essentially believe that all things on earth are living and connected by "the great spirit". Animals are "spirit guides" that help humans commune with nature keep us grounded. When a human dies they will be judged by all of the spirits they did wrong to in life. Mythological creatures include sasquatch, thunderbirds, skin shifters/skin walkers, Wendigos, and wisps that wander the woods.

Inuits are Canadian so yes they would be included. The natives in northern canada are absolutely nothing like the ones who live in cities tho

I've given serious thought to running a D&D campaign with a western Canadian feel. Halflings as Anglo-Canadian rather than English stereotypes, open plains with steppe horsemen, feral wendigo-possessed barbarian tribes of all races as the main threat, a dwarven city inspired by Lethbridge and its gullies, wood elven lodges on the far side of the mountains with a hodgepodge mix of Salishan and Chinese aesthetic, etc. It'd be just alien enough to strike my fellow American friends down here as novel, and I'm drawing on having lived in Calgary for two years.

How did the meeting go? Any news on trade deals? Did Trudeau manage to make Trump back down on some of the more protectionist policies, seeing as how Canada's main export target is US markets?

Oh, CBC didn't run any of that. Just creamed their panties over the handshake for a week straight.

It could have been the NDP that took it, but supposedly they started going back on their party platforms, and there's the mindset that "The NDP never wins so I'm not going to waste my vote"

So we have Trudeau.

It's Ontario and Quebec. Western Canada is misrepresented thoroughly, mostly because the entire Canadian stereotype comes from Great White North, and all memes are spinoffs thereof. Itself was essentially a play off of Ontario's equivalent of rednecks.

Bagged milk is pretty much retarded and doesn't make any sense and the only people who say otherwise are the folks that have only ever known it their entire life. Sorry.

Things that are accurate aren't quite so widespread. Canadians have a tendency to swear significantly more than their american equivalents, but we've learned to be sociable about it. Pretty much everyone uses imperial for colloquial purposes and metric for anything that is actually important. Yes, all of us like hockey. A lot of the Canadians strongly dislike social drama and thus have a tendency to concede minor social issues so as to avoid useless conflict (IE: the apology thing). It's also a cultural thing that has to do with Anglican social norms in some parts. All of us hate Toronto, and some of us consider Toronto to be a de-facto noncandian city-state. We purposely reinforce stereotypes because we secretly think it makes Americans who play into them look like fucking morons. Most of us really like you. We are the most silently hateful people in the universe.

Hey, Canucks, I'm gonna ask a question.
If, in twenty years, Canada held a vote to join the US, would you vote for it?
Assume Canada had hit some serious economic issues, and that America was doing well and had a likable centrist president.
Also, what would the states be? Vancouver Island & some of south BC, Central Canada with most of BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and North Ontario, South Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes & Newfoundland, with the territories going to Alaska(Along with some of North BC, just to look nicer)?

Wrong. I will always have closer affinity to another Finn, regardless of how he or she acts, than I will towards some Somali or whatever. I live west of Middle Jesus Nowhere Ontario. Even so, there's some rather weird history here.
Aboot a twenty minoot hike from my hoose okay I'll stop, it hurts me too there's a ghost town that died in the mid-1800s because of three fires, the first of which destroyed a rather well known and high class tavern/bar/hotel. The fire killed three female milliners (hatmakers). In a town of less than 300 people, there were three hatmakers. They're buried in the corner of a cemetery that's practically in my backyard.

My locality has a really big history of fire actually, and also has men who live far longer than anyone ought to. For example, that same ghost town? Had about 5 men in the 1800s who lived to be roughly 90, and I believe two men who cracked 100.

Plenty of people just didn't want Clinton.

I'm in California and the people here don't seem to get it since apparently our statewide version of Obamacare is decently run (in that people aren't getting gouged) and don't feel certain aspects of the recession, or at least we tell ourselves that because we are surrounded by people who are getting rich.

Lots of Democrats or independents didn't vote Clinton because she is basically the embodiment of incestuous, self-serving, 'FUCK Y'ALL GOT MINE' Washington politics. Even in California, a good number of traditionally democratic voters happily voted independent since they knew that their electoral votes weren't going to Trump anyways. That is NOT the sign of a winning candidate.

We got a lot of myths and legends in Quebec. Pact with the devil and that kind of stuff. Or to explain certain landmarks. Wasn't much to do during 6months winter without /tg/ so we made a bunch of stories.

Quebec French is strange for several reasons:
1. It originates in an obscure hick dialect from the boonies of France
2. Said dialect is from 300 years ago
3. Said dialect has also been stewing in relative isolation for 300 years
4. I think at some point urban Quebec was so anglophonized they had to bring in still more hicks from the boonies of Quebec to re-teach French to everyone? Might be apocryphal but it's a fun story.
5. Also: Catholicism did some fun things to their cussing. "Tabernacle, chalice, Host!"

I totally agree they're worth funding.
My post was highly facetious, but that's hard to infer via text alone.

A lot of my favourite content is Canadian. Many of my favourite bands are, a fair few shows have been too. We just need to get our heads out of our ass when it comes to creation and the PROPER distribution of Canadian Content.
There's this unfortunate (and in my opinion, totally wrong) concept that Canada is America-lite or Britain-lite avec-lez-frenchazes (though the second opinion has been noticeably curtailed), and thus we need to protect our popular culture, particularly radio and television, from the "superior" American and British output.

A fair point, something I meant to bring up is the strange similarity of all said cultures to the English's repression and social timidity. Although residents of the U.S.A. have a tendency to be considered as smug, condescending, etc. etc. loudmouths who are only all too willing to expose the room at large to their personal beliefs, both Americans and Canadians share a distinctly Anglo-Protestant trait: their fear of sexual matters and inebriation. The legislation regarding the two in both countries is still highly indicative of old European values, and though we're slowly and painfully accepting the two, both countries also are having another problem also brought up in thread, and the manner in which the problem manifests is certainly unique to both countries.
Both Canada and the U.S.A. have a (relative) wealth of "free land" (in the sense that there's no one actually living there at the moment, not that it's actually not owned) compared to near every other country.

The major difference is that a large portion of Canada available for settlement is..empty. Like really, really empty relative to the rest of the developed world. It'd take decades to actually develop enough infrastructure to make these places "worth it" for immigrants to settle in, and even then, why wouldn't they just live in Chrawnna, or Mohn-ree-all, Vancuvver, Vi-toria or Deadmonton (if'n ye wants ta be a cocaine cowboy)? I was gonna continue my ramble but let's cut that short and get to a severely truncated version of America's version of the same issue: while (due to its much higher population density) there's going to be SOME infrastructure already in place, many of the "better" areas for immigration have residents firmly declaring their hatred of immigration.

The whole mercantilism/economic nationalism needs to get fucked if any country really wishes to thrive and grow rather than merely survive short-term. As does the current implementation of "Free Trade".

I mean, those of us I've been exposed to have cared less about those things, but I would definitely not say we "pride" ourselves on it. It's just something that we don't really see as being a big deal.
There's a looot of Canada, after all. So much so that it's unlikely someone will see even the best bits of it in their lifetime, unless they dedicate said life to doing so.

So uhh.. if you wanna have a really Canadian setting, make it a survivalist one. Look into the Northwest Passage and Arctic expeditions. I know a lot of that is pre-Canada, but adventuring up here isn't likely to turn out well unless you're well provisioned and know the land.
If you're going with "standard fantasy", heavily consider a true 1600s era with gunpowder and weird monsters as mentioned upthread, look into the show Frontier, and make sure to murder plenty of said weird critters and sell them to your homeland at an insane markup.
You'll have managed to cover a good 30% of Upper and Lower Canada history.

Which is something that is overlooked a lot when statements such as >>53449445 implies. Canada was not a country, but U and L Canada were still a thing for a rather long time.

Is anyone in Calgary?

I moved here thinking that, since it is a bigger city I'd have an easier time finding a job. But Im in-between jobs now, running low on money and I'm missing my valley back in BC.

I was thinking of three things: Look into getting into realty so I can sell houses because everyone always needs land. I'd be set for life.

Or move back to BC and live with my parents again(they want me to come back, but if I do I'm a failure who wasted my time and money), then move to PG once I'm back on my feet.

Or I'll just McFucking Kill Myself.

Seriously, I've been here for six going onto seven months, and the traffic is crazy scary and the roads are all fucked(I'm going to break the shins of the moronic civil engineer who designed all of these twisty turny splitty loopy-de-loo roads). I check out the Sentry Box once in a while.

Quebecois don't speak French. They speak a creole language. They also get super-offended when you speak to them with proper French. In my experience, I was better off pretending I didn't speak French at all than trying to speak to them in French.

I think it's because I speak English with an American accent. Like I'm rubbing it in their faces, or something.
>>
Bleak existential post-modernism, like the French, but with a thin veneer of politeness that makes things more palatable. Actually, Brave New World is about perfect without the sci-fi gene splicing and more beer/weed/insane escapism. Slap all that on a Bob Ross painting and call it a day.

Alternatively, Toronto is indistinguishable from New York until you hit the suburbs. It's just a giant concrete monolith filled with non-people and delicious restaurants. The only difference are the super highways in the states and less industrial patina around Toronto. I took a bus through Jersey and spent a week in New York City. I love your image of a bag of milk. it's adorably 'Murrican.

You know that's not how it works though, right? The bags come pre-sealed, and look like floppy bricks. Then you put them in a special 1L milk pitcher (basically everybody has them, and theyre super cheap), and then you snip the corner of the bag.

The bags of milk come in a bigger bag.

You can buy jugs or cartons too, but a lot of people don't. It's like buying cans of pop instead of bottles. It doesn't go bad as fast this way because you're opening one bag at a time.

Also, the most Canadian setting is probably Corner Gas, Letterkenny, or Republic of Doyle.

Escapism. I honestly could've left after a couple years but I stayed. There's just something about living in a society where you can die at any time that makes you appreciate life more.

You think I'm kidding on that? I'm not. Go look up Watch People Die. There is a hilariously huge percentage of videos from China there, especially people getting hit by cars. And if you're not in the debates and don't have exposure, most people won't know anything about you or your positions. And if they don't know anything about youm why would they vote for you?

As a Canadian let me attempt to answer your question from a modern veiwpoint.

Service in world conflict has been much of what has defined us in the modern world and growing up it's a lot of what we were taught in school for our history.

WWI Was when we really defined ourselves as a country. Brought in as part of the British forces Canadian units became distinguished. Look up the story of Vimmy Ridge or the first use of gas at the Second Battle of Ypres.

WWII was the first war we joined voluntarily, we had our own beach at D-Day... but no one makes movies about it.

After all that Prime Minister Lester B Pearson won a Nobel Peace Prize for starting the Peacekeeping Force that became more defining of us after the World Wars.

It's shameful what we've let happen to the military.
