Humans are not native to the world, and arrived through a rift during the last big Magical Disaster.

Because of the intense tidal forces, life in the oceans has evolved to be very sedate and calm at high tights when the water is calmest, and vicious and predatory when the tide is low and the ocean life is exceedingly crwoded for space and habitation.

The only native inhabitants are varying species (colors) of sophont crystals, possessing the ability of levitation and telekinesis proprtional to their volume.

Besides the crystals, there is no other native intelligent life. All non intelligent life is organic.

One school of magic involves the practice of opening rifts to other dimensions and carefully guiding the energy that spills from them.

These crystals sustain themselves by absorbing the magic from ley lines that pulse throughout the world. Most native flora survives by magi-synthesis or chemo-synthesis, photosynthesis is comparatively rare.

Needle Reefs are barbed colonial organisms that are photosynthetic during the day, and at night they release scores of feeding tentacles that feed on creatures attempting to hide within their network of branching limestone structure.

Needle Reefs do not produce enough oxygen for human colonists to breath, so people survive in domed cities fueled by tapping into energy produced by rift bleeding.
They must bring air with them when they explore the planet.

the only Nitrogen-Oxygen rich part of the atmosphere is in the center of a giant hurricane over 50,000 kilometers wide. the edge of the eye moves at well over 700 kph, but its speed across land is slow enough to allow rainclouds to form in the center, creating intense rainstorms that create temporary lakes that are absorbed back into the hurricane a few months later when the edge reaches them.

the majority of the rest of the atmosphere is chlorine based.
