James posts more lore (who even reads that?)

Song of Swords is a a tabletop RPG centered around realistic medieval fightan' with a ludicrous variety of weapons and fighting styles, centered around a dice pool system. It's currently in beta, and can be used for both fantasy and historical games. The Kickstarter was nearly 300% funded, and we're on the fast track to kicking ass baby.

Call of the Void: Ballad of the Laser Whales is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

MEGA folder containing current version of the game and all supplementary materials.
Note that the latest version of the game is v1.9.9 but with additional supplements.

Here's a wiki detailing SoS's fantasy setting, getting filled up bit by bit as Jimmy reveals more details:
http://tattered-realms.wikia.com/wiki/Tattered_Realms_Wiki

There's also a roll20 room where new players are encouraged to try the rules, test new rules, and find game breaking issues: https://app.roll20.net/join/346755/hRKd4w
If you're looking to learn, post here in the thread.

We also play Guy Windsor's card game Audatia in the room, but now we have a much better way to play Audatia: Tabletop Simulator! The (official!) mod for Audatia is now up and running!

Jimmy what's the most autistic piece of lore you've ever come up with? As a corollary, how do Voscans into dental hygiene?
>>
>>53393023
The single most autistic piece of lore would have to be Krajini sumptuary laws. I actually had a whole chart, spanning the entire year, which stated what foodstuffs could be eaten on which day according to the ecclesiastic laws of the Krajini kingdom. This also necessitated the listing of every feast-day of the year.

I actually wrote this as part of a pitch to the head of Taleworlds (Armagan I think it was?) when we were briefly considering working together to produce a game. It was to show just how in-depth we were willing to go to create a realistic feeling medieval world, even if it was fantasy. Turns out the guy fucking hates fantasy with elves and such, that's probably why the deal fell through.

The Unkindlies are divided into four branches. Kralchester, Belchester, Noviton and Sutthigrad. Each of these four branches is headed by a Master--a Master being an individual who has slain a Fascine Troll in single combat, and who is approved to take over by the departing previous Master. Retirement is rare among the Unkindlies but, truth be told, the Krajina is not that large of a country, and many Unkindlies end up joining knightly orders in Illegon, the Kaselreich or Galli, for the opportunity to fight more monsters. Thus, there is frequent mobility in the Unkindly Order, and any capable member may someday end up being a Master, if only for a short while.

The four Masters themselves answer to the Grandmaster. Unlike the other positions, a Grandmaster's term is for life. His duty is not the killing of monsters, but of other Unkindlies. When a Grandmaster dies the current Masters are brought to Kralchester Keep, and are not allowed to leave until they have chosen a new Grandmaster. A dead or unconscious Master's vote may be given by whoever rendered him as such. The result is usually that the four agree immediately on who is to be their leader--but occasionally it does result in protracted fistfights in the silent halls of the great castle.

The Grandmaster holds total authority over the Unkindly Order, and has the right to order any member to commit suicide. If they fail to do so upon command, his hand-picked squadron will usually accomplish the feat for him, in brutal fashion.

The current Grandmaster is Arcturus "The Grow" of Kyev, a Ruscovite who came to the Krajina with an armful of hopes and dreams. Now thoroughly dashed, the only hope Arcturus has left is that someone strong enough to kill him will come along in the next few years, before he goes insane from the Blood Taint.

Do you maybe mean the Crow?
>>
>>53393487
It's just a combination of stereotypical Bong names and Slavic town names.

>>53393646
I did precisely mean that. Arcturus is called "The Crow" because he is only 5'9. Ravens are bigger than crows. Most of the Unkindlies are in the 6'2 range, they recruit for size and fearsomeness. Arcturus was so brutal that they let him in despite him being less than six feet. He was an extremely capable and ruthless fighter, but his height was often a source of mockery from the other Unkindlies. Now he is Grandmaster, by unanimous vote, and they still call him "Little Arthur" or "The Young Master," but he is not too upset. Everyone is shorter than him when they're bowing.

>Venezuela

I heard the protestors literally burned down Hugo Chavez's childhood house.
>>
>>53393398
How common is it for all four masters and a grandmaster to preside over blood honors Jimmy? Do Unkindlies do a Witcher thing where they all gather for a season before going back out on their grim task? Or are they all kind of semi-permanently together? Apart?
>>
>>53394134
Someone will link you Blood-Magic, it's an Unkindly thing. Basically as you empower yourself with the blood of monsters it has a lasting effect on you, slowly turns you into a beast yourself.

>>53394365
Virtually never. The Unkindlies are basically at the beck and call of the Crown, and they have internal agendas, AND they each have personal agendas. The result is they're mostly constantly out hunting shit or delivering messages or otherwise busy.

During the winter months they tend to congregate in the Four Keeps, where they get really drunk and troll each other for several months until spring comes and they can go kill monsters again.

For the entire command staff of the organization to be in the same place at once would necessitate a huge event--maybe if they were trying to induct a Din into the order, or if the kid were some kind of prodigy.

Used to be that the masters would gather each winter and discuss events, but Arcturus, the current grandmaster, disappears each winter. They say he goes off into the woods to kill and eat hibernating bears.

What even is an elf? In SoS, they're basically just races. The only thing that unifies elves is their immortality. I'm not even sure that they all have pointy ears, or that all other races don't. It's like saying the Sí* are elves and so are teh Ælfar, and so are Santa's little munchkins while we're at it.

>>53402235
That man is a fool. He's missed the entire point of Song of Swords. What is the central tenant that Song of Swords teaches you? What is its moral? Its lesson? Its takeaway? It is that fighting fair is the stupidest thing you can ever do. In any duel, in any fight, in any equal struggle, you have a chance of losing. Losing means you die. Your story ends. If you don't have children your lineage dies too, buried in the same shallow grave as your corpse. If you want to win, you do not fight fair. You do not square up to your enemy at high noon. You do everything in your power to avoid this situation. Song of Swords teaches you this through its mechanics, if you just look. Your chances of winning a Red/Red are almost never better than 90% -- meaning you die 10% of the time you try it. Any time you are attacked, you may be hit. The only way to ensure you are never hit is to never get attacked. To never get attacked, you must not fight people who realize they're in a fight. If he hasn't realized this truth at the heart of Riddle of Steel's system, he's a headstrong cuckservative who doesn't realize the idiocy of fighting openly.
>>

>>
>>53402821
>in any equal struggle
I guess the point of provoking a challenge is that defender traditionally held the right to choose weapons and conditions of a duel. Thus he can turn the fight to his favor from the beginning.

>>53405984
A recurring and interesting theme in SoS is that governments are uniformly the most powerful things in the setting. The Dark Watchers pose no actual threat to humanity because of the traditions which repel them. Goblins, Elves, even monsters and demons don't even register on the scale of national threats.

The most powerful thing in Tattered Realms is a group of humans with a common goal. Even a shithole like Dace would absolutely BTFO any of the monsters or calamities described so far. Ten thousand men with cannons guns and halberds will rekk any dragon or abomination that could possibly drag itself out of the abyss, it isn't even a question, it's just a fact, and ten thousand men would be considered a pathetically small army for any country.

The world is thus one not of giant monsters and people desperately evading them, but of whatever horrors manage to leak through the cracks between states and their fuckhuge arrays of cannons and rockets and warships and pike formations. The real threat has always been other humans. Monsters are just a garnish on a world whose chief feature is that it is as fucked up as our own.

It's actually an interesting take on HFY, because it's so understated. Humans are consistently described as inept, stupid, ignorant, violent, uncooperative apes, but they're still there, and they're not going away.
>>
>>53406348
There are races that are objectively better than humans. Big organized groups of those races would be better than humans. They're just written by fiat to not be organized.
>>
>>53406536
The Helians are organized, and they basically rule the world. That's sort of beside the point though, because the portrayal of "humans" can be extended to the portrayal of "people" in general.

The point remains that mortals, bipedal mortals who are more or less human whatever their abilities, are the dominant lifeform because of their cooperation.

The exception to this is the Ohanedin, who wreck humans every day despite being totally disorganized, but they're a race of Aryan waifus.

Now I crave rules for a Burdinadin Air Wing contesting Dark Watchers in glorious aerial combat.

Imagine you have this battle, the last alliance of men and elves. Humans and Ohanedin desperately struggle against tides of bestial darkness. Their sabers flash and shine in the dying light, but they are losing ground. The cannons thunder but even their massed grape shot cannot repel the hordes of slavering otherworldly creatures.

Then there is a sudden drop in air pressure. Distant music. A beating of steel wings. The entire army turns as one, stunned, as the Burdinadin arrive.

The rocket pods open up, screaming, fiery death erupts to Wagner's heavenly trumpets.

>>
>>53414636
Genosism doesn't explicitly forbid it, but it isn't really a part of any of the Western Voscan cultures, with the exception of the Ohanedin of Iber. The Ohanedin see it as perfectly natural (probably because the men of their society regularly suffer considerable attrition) and generally four or five women share one husband, with the number rising as the individual rises in status.

The one crime which carries the punishment of death in an Ohanedin society is murdering a member of your own family. An easy way to prevent powerful women from scheming against each other is to marry them off to the same man, or to brothers, etc. This theoretically prevents potential conflict between them by technically making them into the same household. Needless to say this doesn't actually work.

Really interested in trying out this ruleset with my Wars of the Roses friends, but I'm a bit lost regarding combat and damage.

I did a test fight of two characters, who I shall name Longsword and Scimitar.

Longsword chose to go aggressive, and declared a downward overhead Swing attack with an investment of 6.

Scimitar attempted to Parry, with an investment of 8.

Longsword rolled 4 dice above the TN of his weapon, and Scimitar did very poorly and rolled only 2.

Longsword rolls "Lower Head" on hit location. Scimitar is not wearing any head protection.

STR 7 + WEAPON SWING DMG 2 + 1 Misc = 10

The TOU of Scimitar is 5, which gives a difference, and thus a Wound Level to the lower head of 5, killing him instantly?

Did I do everything correctly here?
>>
>>53426884
I think so, yeah.
Well, you'd get the difference in Successes from Attack - Defense added to your damage as well, iirc. So:
>STR 7 + WEAPON SWING DMG 2 + 1 Misc + 2 (from successes) = 10
Other than that I do not see any glaring mistakes, but I also have very little experience.

For a short list of fun weapons.
Poleaxe is a good dueling polearm, as is the Lucerne and the Lochaber axe.

Montante, Longsword and Grutte Zwei round out the two handed swords category filling several niches while being versatile. In 2h Blunt the battleaxe, maul and 2h maces are fun.

It's hard to go wrong with a good old half pike or short spear, the latter works well with a round shield. Speaking of shields they all work except for maybe the pavise. Coupled with a spear, your choice of arming sword, mace or axe they're all pretty fun. The Flail is good too.

As for swords. Take your pick man, that's why we have so many. My personal favorites are the katzbalger, sidesword and saber.

Short version.

After CWI Oscar Vukcic, a Steinerist Communist revolutionary took control of Volgia, establishing a one-party Socialist state and purging the opposition to his party.

This created problems in Khmelnytskia, one of the larger provinces of the former Empire, where the land was primarily owned by hereditary farmers, who refused to labor to the same degree when their product was confiscated by the new government. The result was famine, and the radicalization of the traditional military ethnic group of Khmelnytskia--the Ghoezats. These guys were pretty mad about how they were being treated and rebelled.

Vukcic and his government handily defeated the rebels and began a series of terror operations that ruthlessly suppressed dissent in the future, mostly through the mass execution of undesirables and counterrevolutionary individuals. Things were mostly secure until Vukcic sadly died of a stroke. His wife and children were drowned the next day by Vukcic's successor--Anton Zhelozhovic, who also went through tremendous lengths to exile his major political rival, [Cannot be Written]

Things proceeded more or less unabated from there, until a second Khmelnytskian revolt occured, this time the Ghoezats receiving funding and weapons from both the SNVP in Chiron and the Hinamoto Empire. Around this time, [Cannot be Written] returned at the head of the Pensnezarist Faction to oppose Zhelelzhovic, backed by the KPX in Chiron (Communist party) and certain Albish interests. Combined with the rebellion, the Republic collapsed into warring factions. The Pensnezarists and the Zhelezovic faction remained the two largest of these, until the leadership of the former was reduced to dust by the Black Wind, and the leadership of the later were captured by Ghoezat rebels escaping from gulags in the East while retreating. Anton Zhelezhovic was tied to a chair and executed with a blowtorch on camera. Thus began the Quagmire.

To get everyone started, and invested, I asked everyone to select their combatant's ideal sword and give it a name. The wielders themselves are in varying states of WIP, but I'm glad at the selection so far. Interesting to see people make the character around the weapon.
(The Dwarf lover picked an axe)

Empire - "Order, by Grace of God."
Master Forged Longsword (pictured)

Luna di Dio - "The Christians are Coming!"
Exotic Scimitar

Morsus - "Scream bloody murder in agony!"
Cursed Baselard Dagger

Death Rattle - "Time to settle your debts..."
Black Steel Sabre

Xolotl - "My reputation precedes me!"
Aztec Obsidian Blade

Shoveller - "Got me out of many a scrap."
Battle Worn Gladius

Fortune - "Only had to use it once."
Elegant Misericorde

Dragonslayer - "More like a heap of raw iron..."
Berserker Grutte Zweihander

Wensleydeath - "Lovely natural flavour."
Small Cheese Knife

Shihozume - "Honour and Sharp Edges"
Two Handed Katana

Change - "Wielded by Destiny itself."
Luck infused Broadsword

Key to your Heart - "Unlock your death."
Translucent Steel Sabre

Ancestor's Fury - "Oath of Vengeance"
Ornate Dwarven Axe

Bard - "Carve a poem across your chest."
Exquisite Rapier

Lion's Fang - "Forged among the Stars"
Unbreakable Bastard Sword

Stalker - "It'll slit your fucking throat."
Slavic Kitchen Knife

There are a few more to come but this is nearly all of them. It seems they approached it with varying ideas about era, level of fantasy, seriousness etc but it should be good fun.

I don't know what you mean. There's no relation between having an empty hand and grappling. Hand-off is useful only to let yourself punch, and that's because the rules are foolishly written so that holding a 2H weapon makes you--somehow--unable to take your hand off for a split second to punch.
>>
>>53430210

>>
>>53430262
You can still take your hand off the weapon to punch someone with a 2H weapon, you just can't perform maneuvers with that weapon in the same action as the punch.

We should make that more clear in the rules. Good catch.
>>
>>53430612
Well then, the one upside to grappling someone with a 2H weapon is gone now. Now they can punch you in grappling no matter what.

Since you're at it, can you also confirm that Traps and Pins prevent you from Hand-Offing a 2H weapon? It says you can take no action with that arm. But Hand-Off also lets you swap hands instantly if one arm gets completely severed. So which is it?

So to clarify, Space Lenin is basically lifted unchanged, but after his death Space Stalin and Space Trotsky fought instead of Trotsky just fleeing, and this eventually resulted in a civil war that tore the country apart with other powers funding various factions.

So the Space USSR is now balkanized a'la pre-Communist China, and some cossacks caught Stalin and burned him alive because reeee muh holodomr.

Here's the chief question: If the Chirons have now won WWII, why aren't they invading and absorbing this balkanized country? It's not like they have to subjugate the people, they could just wipe them out.

I don't think Space Poland ever fell because the Danzig corridor doesn't exist because the countries are a bunch of islands instead of a contiguous landmass.

So Space Poland is still there, Molotov-Ribbentrop sure as shit didn't happen and that means that the Space-Germans don't even share a land border with the Ruskies.
>>
>>53439444
Pretty much this. The Chironites need more land for their population, but at this point they'd rather fight over colonial possessions than try to invade the Volgins. It would be a total nightmare and while Sternfleischer would probably go for it, Richtofen acts as a tempering influence--such an invasion would be unrealistic. It would just be angry slavs shooting in all directions.

>>53439518
This is also true. Poland (We haven't decided what to call it yet so I've just called it Poland) and Chiron fought primarily over a disputed trio of islands where some Ximbri lived, where there were reports of violence against them by.

Now how true this is is of course unknowable--propaganda in times of war is untrustworthy--but the result was that the Space Poles actually repelled Chiron's army in one of their most pointed defeats, and then negotiated for the autonomy of the three islands afterwards, on the condition that they be considered within Space Poland's sphere of influence. This isn't what Chiron wanted, but by this time the Arloni had declared war and they couldn't wait to fight for a better deal. Perhaps ironically, Space Poland emerged the least fucked up of all of Albion's allies post-war, having technically won their engagement, and even scooped up some of Khmelnytskia in the Volgin civil war. They are one of the likely future opponents of Chiron in Core Island politics.

>>
>>53440062
I actually talked to Jimmy about this on the Disco once, he's a huge fan of Deadlands. Deadlands has a system specifically for this, and he was sort of positive to the idea of making a Boon/Bane for it.
The impression I got was that they were going to include one to begin with, but they didn't want the game to become a child-murder simulator. Having rules specifically for characters to be kids in a system this lethal would be bad optics.

what's the sitrep so far with desert zell?
>>
>>53468345
We took a few breaks, I just forgot to post at some point and didn't want to leave you guys hanging.

Anyway it's been pretty cool. Claymore's running one of the best campaigns of his career, we've got a really mixed party (there are two ascendants, two Din, and two humans) but the balance is actually holding up somehow. We're all good at very different things.

My character is a Zellish woman who was exiled from Rade Sark's fleet for calling him a human-fucker at a meeting. They dropped her off in the desert, with a binding oath of poverty until her exile is complete (ten years.) In her time in the desert moving from town to oasis to town, she became somewhat famous for her ability to hip-throw people through the crust of the Earth, and kids started seeking her out to try and learn Zell-Fu from her.

Now she's hooked up with a Paladin, a Sarturi, an Ohanedin and some human nobles to investigate the ruins beneath the cursed city of Badyah and hip-throw more people. Will she hip-throw a genie? Will she hip-throw ancient sand demons? Will she hip-throw Tomb Kings? Only time will tell.
>>
>>53468744
Exile seems worse when it makes your immortality not work, even if it is only ten years.
>>
>>53468856
It's a very extreme thing to do with a Zell, which is why it's reserved for extreme offenses--like publicly insulting an Admiral-Prince in the worst way possible.

So, we've pressed a line of inquiry with Jimmy.

Apparently, Dark Fire can be used on Zellislava directly. To animate a dead Zellislava is apparently theoretically possible, but a still living Zellislava deprived of crew is a viable receptacle. According to Jimmy, Zellislava use Pyromancy to operate by default, and would take to the Dark Flame pretty readily. And since Zells treat the Ocean as an infinite well of Flame to draw from, well...

More interestingly, it is possible - if not feasible - to get living zells onto a Dark Zellislava and reestablish a Dream. "Their spirits would need to find a compromise," however, whatever that means.
Speculation continues on what happens if a Zellislava corrupted by Dark Fire shoves a bunch of the stuff straight into the souls of still-living Zells.

Eskarne would in part be cool because she's this ancient immortal murder-goddess of the setting, but she doesn't seem like the type to actually research stuff or learn things, so she'd have a reason to ask people about stuff. Also, I always imagined her as having a really dry sense of humor because her life is so shit, so you'd get some good dialogue.

How would you handle Menseur in SoS, limit wounds to level 1 if they hit the face only? I don't really know how it's done IRL so that you don't just smash the guy's face in with the saber even if it's blunt, the stuff you hear about happening in war is pretty crazy, are the sabers just made really light?
>>
>>53480497
Tell me more about it.
>>
>>53481223
Well it was a practice among German college students for a while, they'd wear these protective suits that left the cheek open, then they would duel with sabers, and they weren't allowed to stop until one of them backed away (banning him from fraternity forever) or one of them got a cut on the face that would leave a scar.

That's why all those German generals in WWI and II had scars on their cheeks, they had been in these fraternities which mandated menseur as part of the induction process.

The question is how was this not lethal, apparently some guys did this like dozens of times because they thought it was good fun, and so they were hit in the face many times with friggin' swords and lived.
>>
>>53481604
You don't need your cheek to live, you do need the brain above and behind it. This was taking part in a very controlled environment and I'm sure many horrific injuries occurred but humans are pretty durable.
>>
>>53481604
When you are an accomplished and lifelong swordsman you can get pretty good at pulling your hits.

It's a ritual competition with no real repercussions for failure, so there's no reason that either participant would endanger themselves or their opponent for the sake of winning.
>>

We will include rules for this in the Maneuvers update. For now it should be assumed that you can automatically reduce any wound you inflict by any amount as it is being inflicted. So if you find that you inflicted a level 5 wound, and you want to reduce it to a level 4 or lower, you may. The exception to this is if you have either the Bloodthirsty, Hothead, Complete Monster, Berserker B&Bs, or Natural Born Killer at its highest rank. In compensation we MAY slightly alter the cost of all of those B&Bs.
>>
>>53482389
I don't think any of those need more competitive pricing.
>>
>>53482389
You're going to raise their price because they're currently indespensible boons that everyone takes as well as lower the price of Complete Monster because it gives more benefits than drawbacks, right?

>Bloodthirsty
I think these shouldn't be on the no lowering rule. Just because they're 300% behind the idea of cutting the other guy half doesn't mean they're so oblivious to their surrounds that they'd do it. Maybe give them a limit to the amount of wound levels that can drop, maybe 1 for Bloodthirsty, 2 for NBK and remove CM from the list. A CM doesn't care whether they live or die, but if it's advantageous to a goal of theirs they'd hold back, much like a Star Vampire might not evicerate someone if they think it will lead to the invention of danish, thus weakening the power of the Kasels as the people begin to think more positively of their neighbours who invented this rad new treat thus shifting the overall power balance to start a new war.

Someone who is bloodthirsty probably has limits to the amount he can lower it, maybe introduce a will test much like an alcoholic can say "I'm not drinking anymore tonight." As for NBK I'm unsure on where to place this, as all their innate muscle memory is telling them go through with it.

Jimmy! How's the Irish analogue in Ballad? Have they freed themselves from the sassenach yoke?

I imagine a campaign as a Flying Column would be a blast (though maybe not literally, their explosives were notoriously unreliable).
>>
>>53504487
I don't know a lot about Irish history in the 40s, what was going on then? I imagine there'll be some sort of ideological conflict going on in Not!Ireland itself now that the Fascists have taken Europe. It'd make sense to try and separate Albion from their neighbors by funding revolutionaries.

Well they stayed neutral through WWII, but their small mercantile fleet toiled through the gauntlet of all combatant navies, ran SOS missions, and were occasionally attacked. Irish intelligence cooperated with the Allies, and their was even talks for establishing last refuge RAF bases there.

The real fun is a little earlier with the failed Easter Rising in 1916 that was supported by Germany, and the War of Independence 1919 to 1921, where both clandestine urban assassinations and guerrilla warfare* in the countryside coupled with American support of the Irish cause caused the British government to capitulate with the concession that Northern Ireland would be able to vote on whether to remain in the Kingdom (Ulster had been previously depopulated and colonized with British settlers). They unsurprisingly decided to stay British and this sparked a bloody civil war between the former members of the Irish Republican Army.

*Tom Barry, leader of a very successful Flying Column wrote a book called Guerrilla Days in Ireland which has been purported to have been found in enemy camps in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Simply put: their division organisation sucked. Normal divisions if other countries had nearly double the frontline units with more flexible support and reserves. (italian binary division compared to standard triangular and quadruple divisions, italian artillery, mortars etc were chained to BATTAILLION comanders e.g. the guys that have no idea whats going on upfront unlike modern ww2 standard of platoon leaders begging for firesupport) Add to that what looks like highly incompetent leaders and a doctrine based on idiotic ideas from ww1 and you got yourself some ideas. Also i read in an account of some LRDG guys that the Italiens had VERY bad morale to the point of surrendering on enemy sight so that they could return to being 4 star cooks. For more detailed info (or in case i'm wrong, going from memory here, check out some ospreys from /hwg)
