Actually, under our current best understanding of physics, no they don't. They're purely a facet of your objective experience and memory.

The universe has no internal memory. If you examine a collection of atoms, there is no way to determine where they were or what they were doing before you examined them. If you wait a while and examine them again, there is no way to determine that the atoms you are looking at are the same ones as earlier, or a different bunch that were switched in when you weren't looking. And because you have to use light/atoms/something to perform your observations, you can;t keep things under constant observation: there are always gaps.

You, and the universe, can't tell the difference between two atoms of the same substance. If you have two atoms of Hydrogen, and two different places they can be, how many different ways of setting things up are there? The answer is not two, but only one way: an atom in each position. If you switch them the universe doesn't notice you've done anything, and you can't even tell yourself. This has been repeatedly tested by experiment, and has alot of important consequences.

Welcome to some of the strangeness of Quantum Mechanics. It caused Einstein to give up and go home, cause he couldn't believe the universe was set up this way. Yet it's been about 100years since it was first discovered, and we are yet to come up with anything that describes the behaviour of the universe with more accuracy.

There are flaws with that as you explained it.

In the first example, if the atoms were switched while I wasn't looking, that would have had to have been done by SOMETHING, whether a natural process or a conscious entity. Events do not occur on their own.

In the second example despite the fact that it's impossible to tell if the atoms were switched, I still would have physically undertaken the act of switching them, and even if it didn't matter, they WOULD be switched. The universe may have no way of RECORDING an action, but it's like that old proverb "If a tree falls in the forest and there's no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?" Of course it does, it just goes unobserved. It may not be "recorded" but it still "happened", which are two different things.

Have someone stand on a red square, and then materialize a perfect clone including brain state on a blue square. Even the clone will be able to tell they're the clone, because they're standing on the blue square, and any bullshit possibilities of the squares being switched at the last second is cut down by Occam's Razor.
