I guess I have a fascination with elves that haven't been able to remain untouched by the ages. Ones that have lost their beauty and innocence, but come out stronger for it. Cynical elves. Dented iron. True grit. That kind of thing.

it's actually the reverse. like the other anon said, Tolkien elves' bodies are essentially visual representations of their souls. in this case Thranduil's disfigured face and scars are the visual representation of his thoughts and memories when he loses his temper.

I've always like the juxtaposition of otherwise classic elves that somehow, someway end up in a more modern or even sci-fi setting. Natural magics and unearthly grace in a world of technology and science. RIFTS is usually where things like that happen, though my current DM is running a 5E game that is essentially a mashup of early Shadowrun and the awakening taking place in the early days of World War 1, with the campaign taking place during what would have been the end of WW2. Elves and the other fantasy races, and magic as well, are part of another world that merged with the "real life" world, rather than being a part of it from the beginning.

For all it's autistic rules, TDE definitely got one thing right, and that's their elves.
You see, TDE is a point buy system where you can buy race/background/(special) skills/attributes during character generation. Race and background provide substantial benefits but also come along with a few negative traits to balance out the numbers.
In the setting, elves are super special snowflakes with inherent magic, superior physiology and all that jazz - probably one of the more faithful depictions of Tolkiens Elves in modern gaming. As a player, you actually get to be all that when you play an elf and you will be more powerful than other characters, especially fresh after character generation.
However, you also get a big negative trait which basically sums up just how different elves view the world, nature and society - an elf actually doesn't really work in human society, the bigger the city, the bigger the disconnect is. Nowadays you'd probably call it autistic behaviour.
Of course you could try to ignore it, but since the negative trait does have actual mechanical implications, the GM is free to fuck you over hard and "force" you to play your elf in a way that is congrous with the setting material.
Which is great. I always thought that D&D-elves are really meh, because they're just another race like everyone else - but in the TDE they actually are different from everyone else mechanically and roleplaying-wise and it kind of works.

Can you give us some specifics on what these negatives are? And considering DnD fantasy races in general: if your character can't leave the house without meeting at least three elves, five dwarves and two half-orcs in his supposedly remote human village, they certainly lose some charm.

I had to open up my pdf to look at it again and immediately was reminded why DSA/TDE is both great and incredibly autistic.
You see, your character is made of 3 parts during character generation (at least in 4th ed) - race, culture and profession.
Elves as a race have a lot of upsides - being able to cast spells, looking good, having some kind of special magic singing, resistance to aging, all that jazz.
The negative traits come from their culture and they all get the "elven worldview" trait, which is actually quite a heavy penalty. Since elves are practically ageless and perceive differently than mortal races, they seem to learn things slower, which increases the cost of new skills by quite a bunch (which is very relevant in DSA because skills cost differently, based on groups). This means an elven character will only slowly move out of his starting niche. It also means that you have to reflect that careful consideration and apparent indecisiveness in play.
Additionally all elves don't really care for property/money, hierarchy or the gods/religion of mortals, which creates problems in human society, because those things are actually pretty important there.
For example if an elf went to a market for the first time, he'd just take things that were sold there. He would not consider it stealing, because for him, nature/the world provides things freely. As another example, at an inn he might set horses free from the stables, because every creature is supposed to be free and not owned by others.

Most of these negative traits have numerical values attached to them and they all start in the medium range (if you ignore them, your GM can force you to roll for them and then you have a good chance that you have to play it out)
