A river drake is 2 CR higher than something that's about an equivalent challenge to a level 1 party. It's definitely going to be overkill, especially if anybody in the party relies on acid damage or has vulnerability to same.

Even a CR 1/2 creature can cause a TPK on a level 1 party if it just gets enough lucky rolls. Consider the classic problem of an orc with a falchion.

How well optimized is the party?
Because a river drake can hit like a barbarian with its main attack, use multiple attacks per turn even on a charge, has a ranged attack that both does damage over time and can entangle, and most importantly, it can fucking fly and swim where your PCs will likely be unable to do much more than plink away with their bows.

Unless you're dealing with something like a party of full initiators, they're going to be fucked harder than the entire PLD party.

Okay, a few things that are interesting to me that have cropped up in all the class previews.

1. Gear specialization is apparently going to be a thing? I'm really curious what that'll entail. If it's at all worth it, I hope the Soldier gets better and more specializations than any other class.

2. Themes. what the hell does a theme entail? I really like that they're not directly attached to anything class-wise, though. I really like the idea of having a Priest themed soldier or something for a discount paladin.

3. Archetypes being available to everyone. I'm super curious what they'll do to balance this, as every class needs to work for every archetype, apparently, sort of like a broader form of Class Templates from DSP. The question is: how do they figure out what each class gives up? That could make or break this system.

4. What constitutes small arms? In real life, there's a shitload of things called "small arms" and they go all the way up to things laymen would call Assault Rifles. Knowing Paizo, though, small arms will just mean one-handed guns.

5. What does 'basic melee weapon' cover? What are non-basic melee weapons?

6. every class we've seen so far has had 6+int for skill points or higher. I'm unsure whether that means every class is getting more skill points than they were balancing against in Pathfinder, but it's very interesting to me.

7. The talents each of these classes have shown themselves to have have all been exceedingly powerful. Given talents are supposed to be about on par with feats in Pathfinder, did feats in general get buffed? If so, that's a pretty easy way to take the wind out of spellcasting's sails, given martials have always had greater access to feats (though also needing more of them).

You're going to need a guide to optimizing your kingdom, but it can be pretty fun if your GM doesn't run the campaign and its rule set EXACTLY as written.

The AP as written is fucking awful. It has a shit story, bland characters, bad dungeons, endless hex-crawling, and shitty metagame.

The kingdom building rules as written are also fucking awful. They're too easy to exploit for personal gain, they punish you unfairly for just bad luck, they make it damn near impossible to actually run a kingdom, and they generate such insane number bloat (and paperwork if you're using hardcopy sheets) that you might as well not bother.

You're going to need a GM who plays fast and loose with kingdom rules, who knows how to cut swathes of any module and adapt them to his party, who can actually run lots of interesting NPCs, and who is just generally good at running Pathfinder's combat on top of that.

If you're worried it won't fit in, then that's your call. As it stands though, it's not as out of place with the standard line up as one might think. It's easy to play a Vigilante as a masked knight, or an assassin. It's best to ignore the supers inspiration entirely when working with them.

Also worth noting that the class still functions very well if you strip them of their dual identity feature entirely because Paizo is silly like that.

Yes, it says a lot, because the Dual Identity gimmick has made some GMs pitch fits over nothing. Mechanically there isn't anything the class is going to do that isn't done about the same (or better) by a bard or any other half-casting class. Besides magus, at least.

Not quite. recent stuff has given fighters and anybody that can pick up weapon training a surprising amount of active stuff they can do, and abilities that Aegis can't replicate (Best example being Warrior's Spirit).

Aegis is all passive upgrades to the character, but little in the way of active additions.

My ranger/wizard would miss his bow and spellbook soon enough (spell mastery will help a bit here), but he's trained in Unarmed (it's an odd gestalt situation and he's getting Kirin Style) so it's merely a fairly poor idea instead of a terrible one. They'd also be very very annoyed if they didn't get their adventuring and scholarly supplies back.
The halfing streetperformer bard in Carrion Crown would be annoyed at having stuff gone, but tends to use his gear only to boost himself or when using spells/trickery is not a viable first option. He'd really really miss that Rope of Climbing and his defense items though. But his spells and abilities don't really require an instrument outside of himself, so he could do better than some (though probably not all that great as I've built them poorly for what they're going through).

No one had a dump stat and they are handling swarms of Heroic NPC kobolds fairly well. On a good day most of the party has 20 AC ish because of spells and gear.

I wouldn't be a dick and make the dragon just fly in the air the entire time and spit acid at them of course.

Nah the game just started this week and I thought a campaign about slaying dragons that have taken over most of the region would be a grand quest to embark on.

I guess they were all tired of human/elves/half elf spam and decided to all be short races.

Which is a plus because kobold loot is actually useful for most of them. Since all the different Kobold colors fight in completely different styles.

There are certain species that are just straight up immune to ageing, so if you're at the level where that's relevant transforming yourself into a creature that's got that trait would probably be easy enough to get.
