It's a steaming pile of shit. BESM was and is a poor man's GURPS. It's a broken, non-functional mess of a system that's so easy to munchkin.

It also falls victim to the same problem that has blighted its spiritual successor OVA; you can't actually make an "anime" RPG because anime is a visual aesthetic.

The only good anime RPGs I have ever seen are Mekton Zeta and the upcoming Infinity RPG.

I absolutely don't agree. It fits anime-style gaming much better than GURPS, while being simpler. That said, my only experience comes from Demon City Shinjuku.

What if I was looking for an RPG that does shounen right? I mean classical hot-blooded battle shounen, mostly. Something nostalgic, even (actually I'm asking this for an upcoming small-convention with the "nostalgia" theme)

I'm kind surprised that apparently there isn't any.

Mutants and Masterminds is honestly pretty capable of doing BESM better than BESM. In terms of a system it does a lot of the same things, just with a different default aesthetic.

Have you looked at Tenra Bansho Zero? It can capture that kind of thing. Or maybe the more recent game Kamigakari.

As a matter of fact, yes for TBZ and I'm gonna put in as one of the options. But it's not really what I envisioned.

Kamigakari doesnt' strike me as interesting enough but I'm reading it now.
