How are the goblins in your game?
>>

They live underground and are probably stunted, mutant humans.

A people divided, prophesied to unite at their place of birth.
Inheritors of a vast empire.
Brothers and sisters with the rock and sand.
Keepers of hidden secrets and powerful charms.
Peaceful warriors of the path to enlightenment.
The true children of the Gods.

Terrific liars.

- Goblins are a PC class that can grow stupid, loyal minions overnight.
- The PC-level goblins are smart and can plan and are sort of queens of their own ant hive
- They're pretty much vegetables.
>>
In my buddy's setting, they're bastard Fae with incomplete glamours. The lavish and decadent Fae Kingdoms produce so many bastards and unclaimed kids that they just fucking dump them outside the city walls. Having no other way to survive (being dumped into the wilderness with nothing), they turn to raiding. Their partial glamours are what keep them alive outside the Kingdoms, but they look like Goblins with them on so people aren't big fans of them. Without the glamours they're creatures of pure shadow, or something to that effect.

I should read that quest in the archives sometime

Goblins in my setting are the first step in the dungeon ecosystem. Indeed, they are the originators of most dungeons.

A species with magical origins, Goblins tend to move about the world and find new places to settle down and start a new tribe once the old tribe gets too big or other dungeon-dwelling species drive them out. Even when decimated down to the last male goblin, the creature will undergo a metamorphosis and change from male to female and search out a new spot to begin anew, producing a new brood within a matter of weeks. This new colony then digs out the familiar passages of a goblins den, and begins to set about multiplying and expanding it's den until either population pressures force a younger generation out due to competition over resources, (in which the older goblins graduate to Hobgoblins), or the goblin tribe is forced out by another species.

That isn't to say that Goblins are mindless animals - Goblins are very much part of civilized culture. For some reason, whether it be a natural evolution of thought, or just plain random chance in demenour, a goblin might not find the prospect of finding a new hole in the ground interesting and in such, develop a keener intellect and join society as an outcast or loner. These unique individuals are most often goblins that have already changed to their female forms in preparation to search out a new home, but find themselves without the natural urge to do so. Whatever the case, Goblins have a knack for numbers and architecture. Most major cities employ goblins as foreman's for construction work to exploit that natural instinct for design.

Overall, goblins are very common all over my setting, making the start of new dungeons and starting the dungeon ecosystem off.

Think "low elves".
They're a bit more angular, slightly larger, and less "ugly" than most Goblins.
They're extremely shrewd, cunning, and reproduce pragmatically, as they live a little longer than humans, but can breed and mature quickly.
They once ruled a world-spanning empire, but the "lesser" races rose up against them and broke their hold, now they operate subtly.
Now there are very few left, and those few aren't in the mood to restart their race just yet, mostly waiting in the shadows for the world to get a bit more hospitable.
>>
>>53335547
Sort of like the ones in Moria as seen in the LotR-movies.
>>
A species with three mating types that differ greatly in physical form. I combined goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears into one species. While each that develop as male or female, only male goblins, all hobgoblins, and female bugbears are fertile. Goblins are born in litters.
>>
>>53335547

Stuck in a single phase of their development cycle. Basically they're a civilization (so to speak) of clever kids and young teens.

And no, I'm going with 40k style "they reproduce asexually", you perve.

Are you saying "are" is a conjunction?

It's a functionally conjoining, like whereas, or therefore, as are most adverbs.

Brewed it up myself. It has dwarves in sky fortresses made of dwarves, ever moving human necropolises atop the backs of countless undead, French revolutionary Elves, and colonial orcs.

Generally though, the "main" part of the setting is in the classic village in the woods type deal, which dungeons being the main threat to any civilized region, and adventurers with the task of clearing out dungeons before they become home to anything really threatening.

They were domesticated and essentially made into intellgent pets and servents. Over time as their intelligence grew so were the tasks and skills they were given until in some parts of the world they were granted freedom and rights.

There is a clear divide between the humanized goblins and their ancestors, who still exist, in that they have more rounded features while the more beastly versions have the typical pointed jaws and noses with fangs.

They don't see any form of kinship and will eat the humanized goblins in much the same way as they would regular humans.

What really propelled the humanized goblins to the status that allowed them to be freed was a lab assistant to a wizard and the wizard's apprentince who accidently discovered Runic circuitry and kicked off the industrial revolution. Both of their families now being the heads of an energy company that makes generators and other forms of magitek.

Self-destructive little cave/underground hive dwelling glory hounds whose species only survives due to fairly rapid breeding. Their culture tends to heavily emphasize always challenging the most overwhelming of odds in the hopes that they may survive and become eternally famed in story. As an added benefit those goblins who do accomplish (or their fellows believe have accomplished) some great task almost always become leaders within their society due to having the admiration of the younger gobbos. Older goblins also tend to have suppressed their more self-destructive leanings enough to act as decent diplomats for interacting with the other races.

After reading 5e Volo's Guide to Monsters bits on Hobgoblins/Goblins/Bugbears I was considering either

>Feudal Japan Goblins (Hobgoblins=Samurai/Nobles, Goblins=Peasants/Merchants (And thus cannon fodder in war), Bugbear "Mountain Men"/Shinto Priests (With Warrior Monks sometimes butting heads with Samurai Lords when not joining their armies)

or the much less fleshed out
>Napoleonic Goblins, similar societal hierarchy as above

I've sometimes wandered: if there was a thread asking anons to argue as to which D&D mini-folk race best deserves the shortstack treatment - goblins, kobolds, gnomes, halflings or dwarves - would /tg/ actually respond?

The only time my party encountered goblins was when they checked an old wizards tower, they had a little shanty town (a dozen huts at most) around the tower because monsters and beasts strayed away from it.

The PCs didn't immediately attack so the goblins kinda chilled with them and then helped the party explore the wizards tower, fuck it's fun to RP goblins as the DM.

Mix between city/road, forest, and cave.

City goblins are craftsmen and merchants, usually traveling in caravans consisting of a few families banded into a trade guild. A few of them act as scavengers that resell salvage and used armors/weapons. One of the few races to make common use of firearms.

Forest goblins are your stereotypical dumb tribesmen. Absolutely despise their city counterparts. very rarely a danger until a couple of bugbears manage to corral them into a halfway decent fighting force. Mostly act as guerilla fighters when they really do need to fight.

Cave goblins are the fucked up mutants of the world. Essentially like the goblins of Moria had a baby with the falmer. Twisted, ugly creatures that are even more savage than their forest cousins. Essentially just bipedal animals hellbent on killing, eating, and fucking anything that moves. Unabashed cannibals. Feared enemies of kobolds. Drow hunt them for sport.

They're an all-female race that mates with human men in order to give birth to more female goblins.

Some kingdoms discriminate against them (fearing that the human population might get smaller if goblin girls are allowed to move freely in their cities) while other have a much more liberal stance on goblin girls (allowing them to become citizen and live in the human cities, most cities have a "goblin tax" that goblins have to pay every month to live in those human kingdoms) to some even sending out men to help repopulate the goblin queendoms in order to keep their population up (and removing the risk of goblins raiding them to get men).

Goblin girls are very motherly and will dote on their children and even their husbands, hugging them tightly and patting their heads. Strength wise goblins are bellow human men (but roughly equal to human women) while having a lot of agility and flexibility. Goblins stand roughly 3-4 feet tall as adults and their skin color range from green to blue to even red in some cases.

Now what makes them different is that roughly 90% of goblins born are completely feral, with no higher thought than devising traps and breeding. These are your basic level 1 cannon fodder goblins.

However, if an adventuring party were able to fight their way to the center of a goblin-infested forest or dungeon, they'd find a small civilization made up of perfectly intelligent goblins. No one is sure why the birthing rates are that offset, but with a little work it would be perfectly feasible to integrate the intelligent goblins into larger society.

And if goblins breed with the other races, there's a chance they'll birth bigger, stronger hobgoblins. This would lead to the common sight of goblin-ran brothels, all so goblins can grow stronger and integrate that much faster. To help with this, goblins are incredibly resilient and have almost elastic internal organs, allowing them to shift about in accommodation of... other races.
