Bushi templated classes
Hidden blade under certain builds, but not that effectively. The main issue is that Mixed Combat is needed to maintain the ability to constantly draw your weapon for the bonus effects as a free action instead of a move, and not provoke every time.

Okay guys, I'm in a bit of a bind.

And I'm having a hard time deciding on a class. I've narrowed it down to either some kind of Oracle or Sorcerer, but I just can't decide from their. He has absolutely no clue. Maybe the gods are actively opposing him, maybe there's keepers of forgotten knowledge who would try to thwart him, maybe all he has to deal with is the millennia-old edict of all the gods.

His god, along with that entire pantheon, made a gambit for ultimate power by attempting to wipe out all the other gods and damn near wiped out multiple planes in the process. The other gods (that had survived) sentenced the belligerent pantheon to be forgotten; they could no longer take new worshipers, and once their last worshiper had forsaken them they would cease to exist.
My character is the sole surviving worshiper of the pantheon's god of war, and has only survived because his continued devotion and bloodshed are providing just enough power to his god to keep him ageless (and fuel a constant stream of Raise Dead castings).
So yes, anyone who actually knew what his god had tried to do would have extremely good reason to make sure it could never happen again.

I do it on occasion, but there's only like one or two people I crush on.

I tend not to rush into things, but I like it that way. My Roll20 crushes usually turn out to be pretty cool people, fun to talk with, even if it's just shooting the shit.

And as for how it's turned out? Pretty fun, so far. Nothing too heavy, no big drawn-out ERP despite the clamor for LOGS. Maybe in the future, but it's not like I'm going to post links. I'm not in PLD after all.

It's basically the only 1pp way to not be a useless waste of space as a Promethean Alchemist, but you're going to be what amounts to a budget Master Summoner with slow progression. You'll want to pour your money into Boro Beads and food for your GM, because you'll need to keep up the stamina of your summons and your GM's tolerance of summon-based bullshit. You are also weak as shit on your own, but if you can easily get longbow proficiency you can at least plink at shit at mid levels.

Also remember: Your Homunculus by itself is not particularly amazing at combat, but it's a fucking Construct. It's immune to almost every status effect that can be thrown at it. It doesn't need to breathe. It can FLY AT LEVEL ONE. It is capable of just wading into a lot of the bullshit of some low-level parts of APs unscathed.

Is it just me or is the Medium absolute garbage?
It seems like the Champion is the only spirit worth channeling.
The Trickster won't be as good at fighting even with its gimped sneak attack and two new skills hardly makes it a skill monkey.
The Heirophant and the Archmage are really crappy casters that are only good for casting obscure situational spells during downtime.
The Guardian literally does nothing except make you tougher.
The Marshal seems pretty decent but the influence is FAR too small a resource to actually use its abilities effectively.
And even the Champion, while by far the best spirit, still leaves the medium inferior to classes like the paladin and barbarian.
Is there a way to make a medium great?
Is there some secret build or strategy that my feeble brain couldn't come up with?
I really like the idea behind this class and I want to play one, but it just seems terrible to me.

The King of Smack was a 3.5 psywar build that could outdamage literally anything.
The pf psywar isn't capable of the exact same tricks, but it's similar enough.
If you google the KoS you can learn some tricks for making the psywar a damage-mancer.
Aside from that, if you really really just want to do damage with a psionic class, the marksman would be better.

Here's the thing. It can do its job.
Here's the other thing: Everyone else can do its job better.

Like, you can be second-thief and second-debuffer, but an alchemist would've been better at both jobs. You can do some buffs and damage, but a bard would've been better at both jobs. You're not really a damage dealer, but you're not equipped to completely fuck your targets up like real casters would be.

You're just there. You'd lead a fine life AS one if you lived it, but as part of an adventuring party of set numbers and roles, you're quite simply subpar. In a larger organization you'd be one of those "do anything" guys that can always help out for nearly any situation, but when there's a five-man-band they're either short your role (with you in the party) or you're just a redundancy.

Psy-Warriors are good enough damage dealers; they use their powers to pull off pounces and shit: don't forget they've got medium - not low - manifesting. Gifted Blades and Marksmen and the like get level 4, these guys get level 6. Good versatility and the newest augmented archetypes are rather excellent.

Other damage dealers:
Soulknives may have started out originally as shit, but they have come a longass fucking way. You'll do okay as a living legend, but warsouls, augmented blades and psychic armories really take the damage into primary-death-dealer territory, all while expanding a decent bit on their utility as well.

Psions/Wilders make decent enough bombers.

Dreads get fucking retarded at high levels with the action fuckery against feared targets (and don't worry they can fear fucking anything, including the immune).

Marksmen really need an overhaul but they can do okay.

The Gambler Kineticist is... it may as well be a different class entirely: It empties its burn out to freely manifest its blasting powers, and if 'cycled' properly will basically keep going all day long, though without the sheer peak power you could have from a psion or sorcerer.

I like Witch, Oracle, and Arcanist for Fluff. I'd need to fuck around with anything from Occult Adventures or newer to know if I like it.

Arcanist just has a nice feel to it. I imagined it something like a sorcerer getting proper training. Witch is great because it reminds me heavily of 3.5s Warlock. Class had an interesting concept behind it mechanics wise, but it wasn't good. I might do one next time I play, but I'm uncertain if I want to do the homebrew variant I found or just try and cheese my way to usefulness when playing with friends who don't optimize at all. I really like the 'pact with an otherworldly entity' for power deal, I love the required familiar and communing with it, and I really love Beast Bonded, since it's a different sort of pseudo immortality. I also want to play a Witch with the archetype, so I can take improved familiar and grab an Imp or an Inevitable and then steal a body when we should've been TPK'd and work to rez us.

I'm also a fan of Oracle simply because I like the idea of being God's favorite, not for any particular reason. Power at a price theme fits here too with the curses. I was thinking about a Oracle who was dual cursed with the wolf face and deafness, since the auto silent spell would cancel the wolf spell failure chance, and then just wear a mask everywhere. I've always wanted to do a deaf oracle but never got around to it. I also don't like the cleric bit of being a Clergyman and then God starts caring finally and gives you powers. I can't shake the image of them being stuffy old men. Oracle gives me a way of being a full divine caster without being a tree-hugging dirt worshipper or a Cleric.

Wizards, Rogues, and Clerics

Rogues are aesthetic by designed. Wizards use magic in a non-pretentious way. Clerics alone have far more versatility than many of the shitty "skill monkey" classes like the bard and investigator can actually dream, while also being quite fun to play.

The rogue is garbage as fuck mechanically though.

Druids are also up there for having a pretty unique spell list and having some decent class features too.

All the other classes are \pretentious and reinforces cancerous basket weaving thoughts that plague the hobby with shitty rules in favor of shitty fluff.

My favorite campaign to date was playing a Mysterious Stranger/Bard who was a mix between Harmonica from Once Upon a Time in the West and the lead from Last Train from Gun Hill, can't be asked to look his name up right now. He was a mysterious stranger too, which just so happened meant his charisma was great for everything including his HP for being a skeleton.

But the gang he was in stole all his aztec gold and strung him up in the desert to be left for dead. Leaving just one cursed coin as 'his payment for the job'. Then the rode away and the guy who was to become the pale stranger shot him from horseback miles off. Later a native shaman came by who watched what happened to his family and him and took pity. He sensed the magic from the coin and raised him as a skeleton. Thanks to the coin he was able to become a skeletal champion instead of mindless.

So during the duration of the campaign we ended up fighting each member of the gang. The first was a mexican robot bandito who liked explosives and gatling guns. The second was an alchemist who blew things up, the third was the pale stranger who after a gunfight I challenged him, and we dueled using the old iaijutsu rules from 3.5 oriental adventures retooled as a gunslinger duel. The funny thing was the both of us had named bullets crafted for this eventuality, and were fully magicked up so that if either shot hit during the duel it would probably destroy each one. I actually managed a critical 20 and destroyed him, but we were able to discover that the last member of the gang was the actual mastermind. An old preacherman cleric turned evil.

It was a very tense flavorful campaign and I am glad it ended the way it did.

His 'solution' to challenge these players is to make encounters that are just plain super annoying to deal with at the expense of the other party members to the point that you need these 'optimized' players to begin with to come out ahead.

One encounter, half of the party got enthralled and two people have to deal with 7 undead who fatigued you and dealt ability damage while being 80-90 HP mook sponges

The second encounter, deal with two demons whose AC was around 27-28 when the rest of the party who are not these optimized people only have about +10-13 attack bonus on top of said demons having super high DC for spells

How is that fun for the party in general?

Most of them end up frustrated or tired in general if anything. After a session, often what gets talked about is not about the cool stuff done but rather just talks about being tired in general.

While I did feel good about cleaving a demon and breaking free out of Dominate, I cant help but instead feel "What the heck was that?"

Even as the person with the highest Will save at +15 against compulsion, I stand less than 50% chance against DC28. Thats already a bad sign

Wew, didn't expect that to happen. Honestly I felt the backstory was a little disjoined, but I was trying to draw from my favorite character archtypes while writing it. And the end was a bit of a heel joke.

all that said, the character is just chock full of things I love, so I am totally psyched to be a secondary.

Also, depending on the source of the story, Merlin did use his magic in battles. But you are right most magic users were pretty shit. But that goes to show you how even low level magic users were regarded as fucking powerful dudes and then other sorcerers from lore like the Wizard King Solomon who could fly across the earth on magic carpets that he whispered words to, to make fly, summon food from grains of sand, and all kinds of stuff.

Haven't shed any more members since the initial two dropouts, and those of us still in have been are doing pretty great. This week's session was wholly RP led by facewizard skillmonkey Evelyn, not much Morgase to speak of since Argentum was pretty busy until near his usual bedtime hours. To summarize what went down this week
