Alpha Blue. Yes, I'm aware of the controversy surrounding it, so I thought I'd give it a go and immediately regretted the purchase.

Controversy aside, the game sucks. The rules are oversimplified to the point of being completely unplayable, the random tables for character generation are awful and unless your DM lets you choose your desired result, you're basically guaranteed to get an unplayable character. The game even manages to include HIT POINT BLOAT in a system with basically no rules.

This is just one in a long line of purchases that have really soured me on the whole "Old School Renaissance" movement. The OSR label just seems to be an excuse to slap together a bunch of unrelated random generator tables, stitch them onto a barely functional ruleset and offload all of the work onto the DM.
>>
>>53261385
Also the "Art" is ugly as sin. This seems to be stylistic choice in OSR and OSR related products. If you are an author in the OSR movement, stop it! Seriously, hideous artwork is something I am most definitely NOT nostalgic for.
>>

Hint: All that shit is exactly what all "old school" RPGs were, to a T, and anybody who wants to play them either has their rose-tinted glasses firmly stapled to their eyesockets or they're some kid who wasn't even born during the heydey of these games and were convinced by some grey-bearded old faggot that they were the pinnacle of gaming achievement.

First one is a grampa's rant.
Second is about what is OS and the fact that if it's not OS, you don't get to call it OS by stapling an R in the end.

>I'm aware of the controversy surrounding it,
I'm not, and Googling isn't doing much. Tell me more.
>>
>>53261566
Old school D&D is the lingua franca of role-playing games. I mean, D&D in general is, but the newer stuff tends to be a lot more involved and thus more particular and less malleable. You can use B/X as a foundation to build on, and everybody will know where you're coming from. You start talking about your homebrew game and it's going to take you a good while to explain enough that other people even have the context in which to understand some particular rule or issue. If you're not doing something dungeon-crawly, it's probably still not worth it (D&D is a niche game and doesn't tend to work very well outside of that niche), but if you are, it's not a bad idea to speak a language people are already familiar with.
>>
>>53262705
I too want to hear of the controversy around this game.
>>
>>53262579

Grampa's not even ranting about anything *about* OSR games, he's literally just upset that they're not D&D.

I mean literally.

>So much garbage has been lumped under the umbrella definition of "OSR" that I've lost track. Games that inexplicably seem to draw in gore porn, regular porn, put there just for shock value (anything James Raggi does, for example, or the execrable "Carcosa" by Geoffery Mckinney), or games that are story-games in drag, or are inspired by 4e and 3e rules systems just with "Old School style x" somewhere in the description...they're not. I'm sorry, they're not.

>When we're talking about Dungeons & Dragons, do you know what is old-school? Dungeons & Dragons. AD&D, Original D&D, the various flavors of Basic D&D. Even 2nd Edition AD&D. Those are. Them. They Are It.

> So let me be one hundred percent, entirely crystal clear on the subject so there's no mistaking my point of view: You are either playing D&D, old-school, or you're not.

He doesn't actually draw up any coherent argument against the "OSR" in general other that it's just not Dungeons & Dragons. He kind of flirts with parts of arguments, calling some games "story-games in drag" and bizarrely calling out LotFP for shocking content--but nothing else--which I guess is enough to disqualify it in his book anyway.

The other article is just a dude shit talking on Zak Smith. Smith's an asshole, so whatever, but that article's not really saying much about OSR other than "Zak Smith isn't it, and also fuck that guy."

Interestingly, he also mentions Carcosa, which was explicitely name-dropped in the other article as *not* OSR, as one of the O.G. OSR games.

Nobody fucking knows what they're talking about. There's no "Old Guard". There's no "real" OSR. Creating cliques within an umbrella as niche as OSR is wankery. Some OSR games are good, some are bad, just like any other subgenre of tabletop RPGs.

There's this special flavor of garbage called Post Modern art.
It's kind of hard to describe without explaining Modern art, so we'll start there.

When art got to the point where there was no technical advancement left to invent the cutting edge artists got bored.
And being bored learned men, they mistook themselves for philosophers. This led to Bad Decision. Law of the Instrument and all that.
>These are the mistakes that are made on the cutting edge, because it's easy to slip and cut off your legs from the knees down. -Yahtzee
These new christened psilophers immediately set out to nail down the meaning of "art."

They did this by drawing simpler and simpler arrangements of colored boxes that obeyed image composition rules, showing people toilets, and generally trying to get people to punch them in the face.
The idea was that, at some point, what they were doing would stop being art. And when they got told off for it, they would have found the boundary of art (or at least a nearby datum).
To their horror, they were never told off in their life time.

Enter the Post Modernist:
An entrepreneur realizes you can sell anything by pretending to be a nihilist and then calling it art.
In hushed Hebrew, he quickly tells all his friends.

The point is that these are positions no one actually holds and only people trying to make a boogyman of philosophers they don't understand claim these positions to exist.

Hc Svnt Dracones, let me preface:

Now I'm not really what you'd consider a furry, sure I like anthro characters but I don't have a 'fursona', wear a fursuit, and fuck people in fox costumes. I do however have friends who check all three boxes (and more) and as a forever DM they all wanted to play a furry themed RPG. I ended up picking this one because I like Sci-Fi

The system is just broken, the players don't know how to use their skills, and the dice system was simple yet combat was way more complicated than it needed to be. As a forever DM I had at least enough experience to run a game where everyone said they had a fun time, but it was a nightmare to manage. I should have just bough Ironclaw.

FATAL & Friends sums up most of my complaints rather well.

It's clear you've done the minimum amount of research on the topic to convince yourself your already existing hate of postmodernism is justified but you also like, literally have no fucking clue what you're talking about.

Here's a some food for thought. The entire fucking, concept and community behind 4chan is the result of fucking, a postmodern worldview. It's literally a fucking microcosm of postmodernism. Everything about it, from the way it functions by recontextualizing existing images/media, to entire sense of humor, to the way its culture has shifted from year to year, is fucking postmodern.

Hail Satan! Lord of the Pit! King of Hell! Ruler of the Earth! Master of the Abyss! I open the unknowable doorways and touch the violet flame, drink the revitalizing blood and break the skulls of those who cross Him or His brothers. I call upon the most vicious demons of Hell to intervene. From this night forth, you will be plagued by self-doubt, weakness, failure, hopelessness, hunger, pain, loss, insecurity, and envy. Nothing can save you and no one will come to your aid. All who have befriended you will now desert you in your hour of need.

The peak of technical advancement in art is the neoclassical period. Modern art covers the last half of the 19th century and about half of the 20th century.

"Enter the Post Modernist" is a self-reference, as the poster does not define post-modern, even in a chronological sense, nor assigns it any features, instead making an unsubtle reference to Jews while criticizing the concept of the art market, which has existed forever.

Basically, "post-modern sucks but you can't criticize my interpretation because I'm a post-modernist."

you're conflating meat points with HP bloat

HP bloat is where characters' health pools grow to the point where combat is either sluggish and takes forever because damage values are too low to make a significant impact OR is incredibly unbalanced between characters with differing levels because damage values scale with health and therefore facing characters even a couple levels higher than yourself is suicidal at best.

the idea of meat points does interact with this (because a character may be able to take 20+ arrows before he starts feeling it) but they're separate concepts, and hp bloat has an actual mechanical effect to it.

ultimately it's a balance thing, rather than a fluff thing.

Not really.

Drive Thru RPG has no set guidelines. Weather or not a title is banned is entirely subjective and up to staff discretion.

Alpha Blue was taken down, but after a firestorm of criticism, One Book Shelf backed off and reinstated it. This makes me wonder if they have quietly stopped enforcing their "offensive content policy" which would be step in the right direction.

I'm torn between not buying Alpha Blue because it's a terrible, terrible product and buying it knowing this anyway to tell censorious SJWs to fuck off.
