Since I feel like it's a good topic let's discuss.
How do you feel about the rule of cool?
An entertaining campaign should reign supreme. This means that it shouldn't be too easy people should fail, however if something would improve the game and be a lot of fun, and a player was one number low, let it slide why not
the stuff storytimes are made of

it's fine if you just want to dick around with your buddies, but it's poison for a serious game

Most of the more interesting settings kind of run on it.
Since it's subjective, it depends on the group. My irl friends are memelords and extremely unoriginal with humor, so rule of cool ends up getting used to allow some of the dumbest and most cringe shit imaginable. I'd probably love rule of cool if my games had substance like the (probably made up) screenshot greentext stories that always get posted here, but to my friends, it's "if nearly everyone laughs, it's okay."
I love my friends, but fucking hell, I need to find a new group for trpgs

Go hard on rule of cool
But don't disregard the tone and meta of the setting
It's cool.

it's unrealistic.
realism is a metric of a good RPG, so all RPGs with rule of cool are meme-ridden rubbish.

Check your self before you shrek yourself because my friend. Realism is not nesscarily good.
Plenty of game's can be good without much of it and ultimately people play these games to escape reality.

>Falling for obvious bait
Rule of cool is only cool when you're making a character.
Rule of cool has no place in a setting, or the narrative.
Good rule of cool:
>GM i have this whole concept of an orc wizard born deep in an isolated area who's amazed when he finds out he didn't just invent something new, but there are whole academies filled with wizards inventing new magic etc. but i can't fucking get the stats right without cheating a bit
Bad rule of cool:
>yeah so i fucking wanted nomads fighting vikings, so that's why there's a hot desert right next to frozen wastes
Other examples of bad rules of cool:
Dragons can fly and breathe fire? Their wings aren't nearly big enough to support their body, and breathing fire is ridiculous. What a shitty idea.
