>What rules do you straight up ignore?
Most dicepool modifiers are abstracted. Same for shooting at/though cover. We also tend to forget that wound modifiers affect Initiative

>What rules do you change? How do you change them?
I try to simplify the Matrix as much as possible. I'll usually ask for a Hacking/Cybercombat roll to gain access to the system, then Matrix Perception to fin what you're looking for, then Hacking/Cybercombat to do the thing you want to do.
I changed the Marks into a system of "User level". 1 Mark gets you guest access, 2 Marks give you user access, 3 Marks give you admin access. This works for entire PANs/WANs.

Astral Projections move at regular speeds. Fuck you spirits, you already have broken stats, tons of armor and can move through walls, you don't get to blink around the place like you're the fucking Flash.

>What parts of the setting do you change or remove?
Not much really. Most of the cringy things happen deep in the shadows, and my group is made of newbies. We play before the nano-apocalypse, and I'm going to have it limited to Boston, with just a few headcases escaping confinement and being hunted by all AAA corps, forcing them to leave the planet.
>>
>>53233182
>What parts of the setting do you change or remove?
No one liked how common magic is supposed to be, so my game has awakened being several orders of magnitude more rare.
No CFD either, I'm doing my own AI and nanotech plot.

My group replaces dice pool modifiers from interference due to distance for hacking with essentially signal bars
4 bars and you can do anything
3 makes hot sim impossible and cold sim laggy
2 is the bare minimum for any kind of hacking, even in AR
1 bar and you can send a text

Setting wise, I've gotten rid of CFD and the matrix overhaul that happened at the end of 4th/beginning of 5th (I'm using a hacked version of Ends of the Matrix), I've swapped out the "samurai" culture craze for a more general "old warrior culture craze" (i.e spartans, knights, samurai, mongols, hussars, etc), and I'm working on fleshing out the chunks of the Middle East and South East Asia that aren't all that covered by the books.
>>

>>
>>53235326

Auto-updater didn't work; apparently some people have an issue with their language file getting locked open, so the file doesn't get replaced properly. Update manually and it'll sort itself out.
>>53231466
>Yekka, would it be possible to add the ability to add a Custom Item to Armor, with a box to let you select how much Capacity it will take?
Generally I'd prefer that people use custom files to make items; Custom Item is an ugly hack that doesn't do a lot of things it should. At some point I'm going to integrate content creation into Chummer directly, but that's still a ways off.

Would open d6 or old d20 work for shadowrun?
>>
>>53237055
eh, don't think so
d20's too swingy

>>
>>53237350
No

>>
>>53233182
Everything gets houseruled, from background lore to rules. It's basically a Shadowrun reboot based on a more streamlined 5e... but compatible with Chummer, because fuck trying to play SR without it.
>>
>>53237280
My runner was a mage with PTSD, ex-military/PMC (we never nailed down the specifics) whose marriage fell apart because of it. He was mostly fine once the shit hit the fan but could barely function day-to-day. Still burned a torch for his ex-wife, a voodoo shaman; they parted on good terms and she had a mass of ghost cats that loved to cuddle up to him whenever he came around. Nearly all of his magic revolved around fire and he had a craggy little spirit of fire bound up in a circle in his rundown flat of an apartment.

He was also obsessed with figuring out the gender of the party elf. No real reason, just fidgeting and curiosity mixed with a neverending trollfest between me and the other player.
>>
Have any of you guys read any of the SR novels? Are they good?
>>
>>53238175
I've read:
-Striper Assassin : Pretty good
-2XS : A nice take on the setting, told from the point of view of a retired Lone Star cop. Shadowrunners only come into play near the very end.
-House of the Sun: Same character as 2XS, but the story feels less compelling. Also Harlequin's in it.
-Steel Rain: Meh. Nice if you want to learn about the organization of the Yakuza.
-Aftershock : good plot, average characters. A standard run.
-Spells and Chrome: short story anthology. Some of them are really great. Would recommend.
-Hell on Water: If you want to learn about running in Lagos.
>>
>>53237285
SR rules seem a bit complicated for my group but i like the fluff so i think it would be good to try it with another system
>>
>>53238541
Good luck, in order to adapt it to another system you need a working knowledge of it.

Which means learning the rules.
>>
>>53234215
Not directly, it's more based on the kind of service you'd get in the real world. Being underground reduces your signal strength, as does going across grids or through the public grid. If it's a private server with a relatively weak signal strength then the actual distance starts to be taken into account
>>

>>
>>53238757
IF you're just looking to get a sense of it 4e, might be better, as it's slightly better organised and not quite as much of a clusterfuck.
>>
>>53238757
4E has more information on the setting and fluff, but 5E has a slightly less fucked ruleset. It's just ruined by bad editing.
>>
>>53238826
>>53238946

>>53239226

>>
>>53238653
Unless you only mean during chargen, it doesn't; you just have to get creative or high end to manage it.
>>
>>53239005
I prefer 2e/3e for the fluff, honestly.

Need help, I made a rigger put a lot of point into the flying drone so should I give my character a backup weapon like a holdout pistol,
>>
>>53240525

Standard advice is to always a backup weapon, especially if you get somehow separated from your drone.

A holdout pistol is decent but if you wind up doing a run against a corp, you'll need something with a bit more punch like a Heavy pistol but a holdout pistol should not be your main fallback weapom since they uaually have crap range, crap accuracy and crap damage and ap. Get a light pistol if you can for your normal runs and the holdout for last resorta or for surprises

Honestly, you should probably go more into the Genesis Shadowrun. It's a bit closer to actually acting like 1e and 2e.

Just remember that as of part way into 2e/end of 1e that alphaware is just newly a thing and basically treated like beta. Beta is treated like delta in the adventures where it's featured.

Oh, and they do have some fun stuff.

Like the printing of 3e I have makes flechettes almost entirely worthless, because bad editing means that the bonus goes away if the target has ballistic armor or dermal implants.

Lore-wise, I mostly stick to canon, with the main exception of CFD being much less aggressive. I also tend to make cyberdecks a bit easier to acquire post-chargen by offering them as payment for runs. Mechanically, I'm using some alternate rules for vehicles, alchemy, archery and a handful of technomancer stuff dragged kicking and screaming from 4E.

New Shadowrun player here with first character ever. My group are going to play SR 5th ed soon and my Street Sam needs some help.

Question is, what bioware should he get to be better at Street Sam. From character reasons, he would try to avoid cyberware so no cyberarms or legs.

Basically to be faster with better reactions. He will most likely be melee Street Sam or use archery.
>>
>>53246149
Muscle toner for more agility (makes you better at all weapons), muscle augmentation to be the fucking strong, and synaptic booster to get that initiative up. If you wanna munchkin a bit you can take restricted gear so you can get a pain editor and ignore all wound penalties.
>>
>>53246194
Some of the more advanced shit to look into would include Narco (for popping those sweet combat drugs), Qualia, Reakt, Adapsin, a Cerebellum Booster, things that up Agility, Reaction and Intuition mostly.

Thanks mate. Would you suggest either taking A for funds or for skills? With bioware I am leaning towards funds to get all necessary stuff.

>>
>>53246316
Having funds at A usually means you can buy pretty much every aug you need, so unless you really need those extra skills it's a good call. What chargen method are you using, just standard?
>>
>>53246328
We are using standard priority for chargen. Going with DCEBA with these advices
>>
>>53246411
What
Thats an awful plan
Rule 1 of Character Building: Primary skill dicepools at 12, secondary at 10, and tertiary at
Second Rule: Do not put your skill priority higher than skill priority
Switch skills and abilities priorities
Do no buy skills at to 1-2 ranks dunning char gen. In game getting skills from 1 to 4 takes 10 days. Getting skill from 4 to 5 takes 5 weeks.
>>
>>53246772
Fuck!
I mean skill priority higher than abilities
>>
>>53246772
Gotcha
>>
>>53246411
Eh?
That spread is fine. You'll be light on Attributes starting out, so if you want higher AGI, WIL, or BOD, you'll need to drop a few other attributes low. You also have a fuckload of nuyen, so you can supplement your low attributes with ware. Muscle Toner, Bone Density, Orthoskin, Synaptic Boosters, Platelet Factories, are all core options for the Biosam at chargen.

You'll want to have one point in Etiquette, Con, Pilot Ground, and Computer. Probably Armorer as well, so you can Handload APDS rounds in your spare time. You'll have lots of skill points, so consider subrolling into Driver (high Pilot Ground Craft, high REA, a nice car), or Infiltrator (high AGI, high Stealth, breaking and entering gear).

DBECA works fine as well obviously, it depends on the type of runner you want to build.
>>
What's the best breakdown of priorities for a physical infiltrator adept with a touch of combat and social capability?
I was thinking of B/B/D/B/E, which would net me:
B3 A7 R3 S2 C6 I4 L3 W3 E3 M6 (Elf). I considered min-maxing a bit more, but I don't enjoy the thought of playing an idiot.

Astral Perception
Attribute boost AGI 1 (Qi focus)
Combat sense 1
Facial sculpt 1
Flexibility 1
Hang Time 1
Improved potential physical
Improved reflexes 2
Nimble fingers 1
Voice Control 1

Stealth group 5
Assensing 5 (9)
Automatics 6 (assault rifles) (13,15)
Con 3 (9)
Escape artist 1 (8)
Etiquette (10)
Gymnastics 4 (11)
Hardware 2 (5)
Impersonation 2 (8)
Locksmith 5 (12)
Negotiation 3 (9)
Perception 5 (9)
Pilot Ground 1 (6)

The idea is to be the gray man, hence facial sculpt and voice control powers. His role would be to find a way in for the whole party, preferably by use of subterfuge, but potentially by use of disguise and social skills as well. He would play like a professional, who has almost a neurosis about his real face being known by big brother (faceless quality).

Thoughts, comments, critique?
>>
>>53247702
There is no point in not going D/B/B/B/E for this build. Going B/B/D/B/E results in MAG 6 but you lose out on the 4 Skill points you get from Priority B Adept. You could use the skill points in bolstering your Con and Impersonation skills. They're your tool to get past the front door.
>>
>>53247702
On top of my head you would stop dead in your tracks when facing a maglock. So either boost hardware or hope your decker got your back

It's not just clothing chummer, but it is limited to fabric. You can get around this by just applying it to a duffle or backpack for whatever you need to carry.
>>
>>53257428
Okay, so for example, the fabric of the jacket, but not the armor plates can be made to change color with EC thread? Or is the entire armor jacket made of armor plates and synthetic leather? The description in the book isn't too terribly clear. The idea of having a duffel made of the fabric is fantastic, thank you.
>>
>>53257119
The restriction of availability is 12 at chargen, device rating is what has to be 6 or under.
>>
>>53257512
Ah. Okay. That opens up way more options. Like giving my guns actual suppressors, for example.
>>
>>53257493
Hes saying that you can't coat a gun in Electrochromic, its limited to fabrics. If you cover an Armor Jacket in EC, the whole Jacket can change. Same with Full Body Armor, or a Helmet. But that means you can be creative. Acquire a Backpack, a Cloak, etc, with EC.

Here wit hone last question before I stop being a pest. How exactly to mods work? Is it additive with the Avail of the weapon or gear? For example, my Ruger 101 is 4R. A suppressor has an Avail of 9F(Labeled +9F in Chummer). So does that mean the Avail of my rifle would be 13, meaning I couldn't take the suppressor at chargen or is the cost of the accessory separate from weapons proper?

I think it's the original. And the wording in mine makes it look like the D category increase only happens against unarmored targets (and is also nullified by Dermal Armor).

Yeah. Before Shadowrun Returns, there were three Shadowrun games.

The SNES one (which gets the flavor great but goes on the mechanics about as well as a lot of the early novels did), the Genesis one (great rules emulation for a real time game, less flavorful than the SNES in appearance and looser story), and the Mega-CD one which I know nothing about.

chummer, d% is just a d20 where you roll a d5 afterwards. Distribution wise it is the same

Unlike a d% or d20 or d6 whose probability is flat (same chance to roll a 20 as rolling 1) the probability of the SR dice pool system is a weighted bell curve whose median is dependent on the dice pool size
http://anydice.com/program/bafc is a good representation of this (click on calculate and then on Graph): Higher dice pools increase the average amount of hits AND decrease the chance to roll a glitch (see pic related)
A rookie with medium attributes is going to have a good chance of glitching on his test and the better you are the more secure you are in your abilities which means lower chance to glitch

5e Hard Targets question, I've seen on other forums that the manablade and powerblade spells are broken but not why. I'm a newbie that wants to take them, since lightsabers, but I'm not sure.
>>
>>53258656
Most people don't know what the spellcasting roll does (in this case just makes it harder too dispel).

Powerblade is only broken if you use reagent limiting to ensure that you can get a high Force without taking physical drain.

Manablade is broken because it combines the best of a direct mana combat spell (only resisted by Will) with the best of an indirect spell (base damage). So at anything but super low forces it's basically a OHKO.

The Archconservatives are hardcore regressives, made of the wealthy and influential who want to go back to the 1950's before things were so complicated with this women's lib and Awakened rights.

So, I spend to much time thinking about the setting, and one thought struck me...

Mega corps are a product of the setting, and perpetuated by shadow runners. Basically it is an economics thing, cost of security as barrier to entry. Before businesses relied on the internet, you mostly had to worry about physical security. Generally this could be provided by the government up to a certain size, but over that you needed internal security. Internal security isn't something you can purchase in small units, and gets more efficient in larger quantities. Ten guards provide more security to a location in ratio to their cost then one guard. Also the threat of the business collapsing unexpectedly goes down as the size increases, giving more incentive for career security dedicated to their jobs.

Small businesses rely on the government to provide general security, so the group always most threatened are midsized businesses. big enough that they are a target for more complicated crimes, but to small for internal security to by efficient. Now in the 6th world the weight is multiplied by three, adding magical and matrix security. For a small scale engineering firm that has 150 employees, the cost of even one guard for each plane is heavy. Yet if you don't have a spider, you might as well just give any competition your contracts. Same if you don't have a mage watching for spirits. Yet these people need to sleep, so you are really talking about shifts. minimum 9 dedicated guards, but probably a minimum of 15. Your HR costs just went up 10%, probably more because these are specialists in demand. There goes your profit margin.

Mega corps can easily provide this security. They are big enough that a spider knows that if he robs them, they both will still be around to complain and make it hard to get a job. Big enough to have career professionals dedicated to security, and rotated through positions to maintain efficiency.
>>
>>53263213
Now we come back to shadowrunners. I know it seems like they are constantly hitting big Megas. Those are the runners people talk about, much like those are the companies people talk about. Except those are the exceptional runners. What about the much larger mass of criminals seeking to emulate them? Well they don't run on Megas more then once. They hit companies with shitty security, but big enough to be worth robbing.

I think a lot of GMs just ignore it. When you're on a run, you'll mostly be doing stuff in AR, and when you're not on a run you'd really need your own session of Matrix shenanigans. My 'net expertise lies more with CP2020, and in that you'd do basically your own little net dungeon crawl thing to get files/access/whatever if you're the team Netrunner, and then be largely limiting yourself to Menu commands from the battlefield when you're with your buddies. Taking over cameras, opening doors, dropping things cranes are holding onto, that sort of thing. Like Syndicate 2012's hacking stuff.

At least in SR the decker can keep himself busy playing ECM/anti-hacker.

Yeah, SR5's not that complex a system, the basic skill+attribute dicepool vs. target number or opposing dicepool is easy enough to deal with and should be kept but... Basically. Grenades are hilariously lethal when you factor in the rules about contained explosions (or gas grenades with non-lethal toxins still killing everyone with overflow), so the agreement is, "Players don't grenade-spam their way through everything, corpsec doesn't start carrying grenades."
>>
>>53268128
Only one way to find out!
>>53269083
The basic idea is that if you don't use certain types of grenades, the GM won't use those grenades against you. This commonly extends to a blanket ban on grenades entirely, since it's not particularly difficult to wipe out a party that's not expecting someone to pull the pin on a neurostun grenade.

Haha, our party encountered Neurostun for the first time during this run. We spend the week between sessions hashing out a rough plan and getting details from the GM. Finally as the session starts, our employer mentions "By the way, they have Neurostun IX in their security system and recently bought two less-than-legal nonlethal defence drones." We figured since he left it so late to tell us that it wasn't that important, and besides that we were itching to start the run, so we just power on. (Also, the players are all fairly new to SR, if you couldn't tell from that.)
Long story short, we tripped the alarm most of the way into the place, got gassed and knocked out most of the party in one shot, then got hit with a Filchetti Pain Inducer (or whatever it's called) on this big fucking drone on the way out. Somehow zero casualties, but you bet your fucking ass we're all buying Chemical Seal armour before next run.

Still totally possible to get 7AGI in a variety of ways, though, or to spend two simple actions to fill your hands with grenades for your dramatic entrance. Your dicepool is going to be shot anyways with Multiple Attack pool-splitting, might as well make sure you're using handfuls of smoke grenades scattered everywhere.

I can understand the realism you go for in thinking that recoil would still be the biggest deciding factor in scatter in terms of firing a full auto weapon (I assume that's the argument anyways). The reason average people never fire full auto is because of recoil right?
>>
>>53233182
Playing a shark adept who punches his way through problems.

How do you play such a character right? I mean, in combat I soak up hundreds of rounds of automatic fire, and I hit like a truck but I never seem to do really well.

Usually it's one or two rounds in and I'm on my last legs.

Even with ~45 dice for my armour/body save I get shit kicked every combat.

What are your strategies for not getting hit?
>>
>>53274484
No, it's because it's useless and wasteful.

I can go more into detail if you wish.
>>
>>53274605
Nope. I thought that was your argument. No need of it's not.
>>
>>53274604
How the fuck are you taking that much damage with that large of a soak pool?
>>
>>53274604
Be faster. Dead them niggas first.

From what I understand, it's really hard to actually tank without some type of hardened armor because you get butt fucked by stun.
>>
>>53274635
It is a part of it, but not all of it. Even with a subgun with a negligible amount of recoil, you generally don't shoot full auto.
>>
>>53274655
Well, every enemy has high end firearms and APDS ammo.

The mooks I mean. The non-mooks get a makeover to be a suitable challenge.

our DM has a bit of a love affair with infected.

>>53274662
My initiative is 20+4d6, I don't know if I can get much faster without a lot more karma/money. Or becoming infected...

>>

>high end firearms and APDS ammo.
what kind of high power games do you play? APDS should not be that common, especially not with MOOKS, you know expendable enemies
>>
>>53274832
Ah, well. Our entire group consists of two folks. The shark adept troll and the blood mage pixie.

Because it's only two people the GM gave us a few handouts.

"Demigod" which is a homebrew that increases two stats and their cap by +1, +2 essence, and +100k ¥ at Chargen.

Past that, he might go easier on us for some loot purchasing (provided we throw enough money at it)

I can post my chummed sheet if you'd like.
>>
>>53274807
APDS doesn't chew through 45 soak. Unless you're getting hit with anti tank rounds, you shouldn't worry about damage.

How the fuck is the rest of your team alive if they're getting through your soak pool?

There are two Inspirations available, but the one in the gear register is IIRC just the one in the cyber register but not installed yet. So should you find a canister with the genes and vectors that would be the gear one, and once you "install" it it would be the augmentation one

>Crit Glitch means you develop a tumor and die in 2d6 weeks
>glitch means you take 2S unresisted, unhealable damage
>0 hits mean the positive effect fades but the negative effect stays
>1-4 hits means it fades normally
>5 hits mean you get the full effect permanently at the cost of 0.4 ESS

How decent is this idea? Dwarf mage hunter. Mundane, but high will power and magic resistance to shrug off spells. Sawed off shotgun in one hand and a sword in the other. Uses as much ware/drugs as he needs to, but takes time to research his opponents and prep too.
I guess if worst comes to worst he could be an adept but I like the mundane factor.

>>
>>53281005
>>53281298

Depending on how heavy the smoke is judged to be on a given turn out of the default 4 (or so), it's anywhere from -1 to -6 on the spellcasting roll, 0 to -4 if the caster has thermal vision and you're not using thermal smoke.

You might consider also investing in some RPC mods for your armor to get the most penalty you can.

7.28 essence.

>>
>>53282474
His GM gave them 2 extra essence and 100k nuyen to compensate for there being only two runners in the group.

>>
>>53278540
Forbidden Arcana has Null Wizards, who can only disrupt magic. That might be an option for you, if you're not totally committed to being mundane.
>>53281298
SR5 p.174 >Whether it’s natural rain, fog, smoke from natural sources, or smoke screen of some type thrown up for cover, they all block line of sight.
Line of sight is used consistently to refer to spellcasting.

>>
>>53277067
>double elastin
thanks chummer, didn't know that was a thing. Thats basically right up my alley. Might even have enough to get it done after this run. (sitting on 90k nuyen)

>>53283360
The GM allowed us to take as many negative qualities as we were willing to suffer for.

I was originally going to keep the list quite tame, but the more experienced player told me to go big or go home so here we are.

>>53283362
Double elastin and pain editor are pretty terrific. Should be able to pick them up and stay within my essence limit.

Also, by way of explanation, the GM takes essence before magic if you have less invested in the latter than you have left of the former.

ie, 8 magic (6 core, two initiation) with 8 essence, leads me with a spare 2 essence to either invest into magic for, or into augmentation which is what I've done.

It is very over powered, but the GM likes his high level games because of all the custom critters he throws at us.
>>
>>53283170
At least they got it right in the path of the Pariah tradition later in the book. Speaking of the variant Aspected mages, any idea when they'll make into chummer Yekka?
>>
Can a mage target themselves with a los spell using a mirror or something? That new growth spell seems neat and I was trying to figure out ways to use it.

Apologies if its a dumb question, I'm pretty new and our group's GM likes to have us read the books a few times before any questions.
>>
>>53283681

This is what happens when runners are stupid. Stocks have to be tied to a SIN, and it's all too easy to have to burn a SIN.
>>
>>53284002
My training is more in statistics, not that I've ever actually worked in the field since I graduated. It's the reward from the Lockdown adventures (3% Monobe voting stock) that I'm trying to put a value to.

That said, I've got my own calculations that peg them as about elsewhere, but I'd rather base them on something more complex than that chart on 'what buys what', mucking around with PPP and a few older book references on what 'hoarding' cash means for a megacorp.

>>53284021
Depends on how you do it. Extraterritorial SINs can work in your favour for that sort of thing; and there are services that can work anonymously mentioned in fiction. They even mention the SIN thing in 4e in relation to housing - sure, live in an EVO owned rental house. Buy a SIN from them. Just never run against EVO.

What's the best way to crank up your initiative for an adept? Current idea for the build has Increased Reflexes 3, leaving me at 4d6+10 init. Any way to get that last die or a solid increase other than drugs?
>>
>>53285309
Initiative boosts don't tend to be compatible, and the best ones push you up to +4d6. Just take Improved Reflexes 2 and pop Jazz before fights, unless you're avoiding drugs for character reasons, in which case, tough.
>>
>>53285309
If you absolutely must get great initiative without drugs, you can blow a bunch of karma on Adept Spell (Increase Reflexes) and the Spellcasting rank to be decent at it. Gets you fast as fuck with a good roll but you need to sustain it.

Read the market panic book to get an idea for who is on top. For a baseline on how big a AAA stock is think of the biggest company you know that owns several companies and then multiply that by 3.
>>
>>53288236
Yeah, I'd thought of that but I was hunting for actual nuyen values. I've got a bodge-job running across a spreadsheet based on what I came up with earlier, but any hard data is more useful.

The hard data is, "Enough money to retire on with High Lifestyles for the rest of your life." 3% stock in a AA that is practically a AAA (if only they can sort out the politics of getting a seat) is an unconscionable amount of money. There's no value for it, because it's Congratulations You Are Winner Play Again?

>>53288822
Yeah. There are a few sections where 'hoard'ing cash for a megacorp is described as hundreds of millions, and a few tentative fuckaround calculations of mine peg global GDP at something like 450 trillion nuyen, with the the vast bulk of that being money moving inside megacorporations and never leaving it, just paying for internals goods and services. I valued Shiawase at around 1.8 trillion, for example. But this is all very back-of-the-envelope, with heavy extrapolations from mcdonalds figures on the sales of big macs and chinese state corporations.

Aside from Corporate Guide, out of ideas.
