Well if the holy land is ancient, then perhaps it is ripe with ancient ruins of past civilizations that have inhabbited the land, thus you can introduce undead and wraiths - and the treasure hoards in their dark and dusty vaults.
But perhaps if you gave an outline of what the holy land is, then perhaps good answers will come your way.

What about y'know, humans? Humans with an interesting motivation and reason for hostility are always a good thing.

Or I know, why don't you start thinking of fun encounters that the players can have and resolve in a multitude of way instead of planning "what is going to mindlessly assault them next?". Are your ideas so limited that you can only fill a session by "hitting them" with series of combat encounters? When will you start being a good DM?
