The best fantasy thats its setting as the basis, and then builds everything on top as realistically as possible, allowing total immersion in a setting.
There's a magic river? ok, build an eco-system around that river (I'm no ecologist but...) magic fish, that are eaten by bears who get sick and die. Bear population is wiped out, so wolves become rapant due to abundant extra fish and territory. The wolves dont get sick from the fish though, and become sapient from the magic, learn how to re-animate the bones of the dead bears and use them as mounts. And then sapient wolves riding skeletal bears ransack the local town, stealing a bunch of women.

An emergency meeting is held in the town square, volunteers are asked for to find whatever took the women and follow the skeletal footprints leading up into the dense forests. Your party are the only ones to step forward and volunteer...

And you may not be a lawyer, geographer, physicist, engineer, architect, farmer, or any other kind of specialist in a very relevant field to create a world.
That's why wanting everything to be as realistic as possible when you're alone is foolish. It won't be. You are lacking in way too many areas, and every expert will find flaws in your work.

That doesn't mean you can't try to read a bit about the different subject and make something that appears realistic from afar, but you can be sure you will miss something, and probably something big, because you don't really understand the fields you're working with.
