It is. 2 in mainboard 2 in side. It sucks getting blown by electrickery /once you flooded field with elves.

It also turns your dudes into fantastic blockers, so even maindeck it's never a dead card. Decks like MUC simply run out of wincons the moment you land a Spidersilk Armor.

Basically every deck sideboards ways to sweep 1/1s.

>>53187527
Do it. My suggestion is to buy something more interactive first and then move into the more linear stuff later. I am mostly playing ub control and enjoying it it a lot.
>>
I started a pauper league here, ended up playing B/W tokens because I couldn't find any Rally The Peasants. Harsh Sustenance is nutty.
>>
>>53187527

you barely need to buy in, dude. a viable deck costs less than an Amonkhet draft. just go for whatever suits your style. top decks like UB, Affinity and Delver might run you a bit more than ten bucks but if you're just getting into it, why not just go for your crazy budget brew of choice?
>>
>>53192821
i bought ub control on mtgo without hydroblasts and it prob cost me less than 4-5 tix

Yeah I play pauper. I've got elves and I'm waiting for the cards for bug zuberas to arrive. The deck is not strong, but getting those occasional nut draws when the zubera counter gets to like 6 feels great. I wonder if trying to put the red one in there is doable.
>>53186042
2x maindeck seems interesting. I've only tried it in the SB so far. I'm quite fond of 2x wirewood pride in the mainboard. easly castable with a birchy ranger and can both save my critical elves from bolts and end games.
>>
awesome, a pauper thread. Thats all i do - peasant and pauper

I have a g/u Aether burst/soul barrier deck that ive never tested but seems hype.

I also have a b/w extort that is just insane, especially with Nightsky mimic & divinty.

Although i do more peasant decks. I like the added decks/tactics/additions with the 5 uncommons. Or noble is interesting too.
>>
>>53193586
So, since I'll change the Crown of Ascension for Spidersilk armor, I won't need a third sylvan ranger. Do I add an Ulamog Crusher as a finisher?
>>
What do people here think about the idea of Modern/Frontier Pauper/Peasant MtG?

What are the best enchantment and/or artifact removal in White? Bonus points if it works on both, that way I free up some sideboard slots.
>>
>>53195269
Disenchant
>>
>>53195269
Fragmentize (doesn't hit spire golem)
Patrician's Scorn (wipes all enchantments, doesn't hit artifacts)
Dismantling Blow (kicks for cards)
Kor Sanctifiers (is a 2/3)
Disenchant
>>
>>53195269

Forsake the Worldly costs only 1 more than Disenchant, exiles, and can cycle.

>>

I'd splash red for Reckless Charge. You aren't as fast as modern or legacy infect so you need haste to hit the explosive turns you need to steal the win.

Llanowar Augur is great, though. It's a Giant Growth that gives you edict protection.
>>
Pauper looks fun, but aside from a half-asses ninja deck I've never played and know little about it.

What deck is fun, and is affinity fun?

What decks would you recommend to, say, a playgroup with mostly casual or bad players who like smashy-smashy and simple "combos"?
>>
>>53200885
Affinity is a blast to play and is also super competitive. Excellent artifact destruction and flame slash are the only thing preventing it from ruling the format. And even then, the deck still wins.

Most T1 decks work well for newbies, just steer away from pure control decks (like teachings) if you want to have casual games. They aren't really that powerful, but they DO leave a bitter taste on newbies.

For simple combos, Kiln Fiend is probably the best you'll find.

Why on earth are you playing dragonauts in izzet blitz? Dragonauts suck donkey balls. Even if you use tainted strike instead of temur battle rage, wee still needs 3 other spells to kill in one swing. Cyclops/fiend kills in battle rage + 2 spells.

On a totallh different note - izzet blitz is one of my decks too.

Others are:
Ur delver
Tron
UGr threshold
UB control
MBC splashing momentary blink
Rg infect
Kuldotha Boros

mistblade shinobi x 4
deathcult rogue x4
neurok invisimancer x4
tandem lookout x 4
shield sphere x 4

steel of the godhead x 4
essence shatter x 4
cancel x 4

i can't afford ninja of the deep hours or else i'd put that somewhere in there
>>
>>53204313
Mostly i just lose. If i get good hands against specific decks then it gets interesting. Ie recursing stinkweed to fuck their anglers.
>>
>>53187062
This is almost card for card a Jund deck I built like a year ago on mtgo.

Are you a Sorcerer?
>>
>>53204313
You grind hard as fuck. Literally the most grindy deck in the format. You grind them to death with your toolbox. Nothing short of exile stops you from having the exact creature you need several times over after you've drawn/dredged a copy.
>>
>>53205285
Accumulated Knowledge
Whispers of the Muse
Think Twice
>>
>>53205704
Pretty bad, desu, you want more etb stuff you can abuse with ninjas, fewer counterspells (take cancel out of your deck and run counterspell for fuck sake, what is wrong with you?), what the fuck is shield sphere even fucking doing, more ninjas, drop steel of the godhead auras are the last thing you want when you're bouncing your own shit, get some better removal.

You went autistically hard on the "unblockable" thing to force through ninjas, you seriously don't need it, fliers do just fine, and deathtouch creatures, both discourage blocks enough that you'll get several ninjas in for free. Of course after the first ninja your opponent will be more wary of unblocked things, which is where deathtouch pays off.
>>
>>53207107
>more etb stuff you can abuse with ninjas
any recommendations?
>>
>>53207558
Mulldrifter, archemonacer, augur of bolas

Go nuts with value
>>
>>53207558
You could try something like spellstutter sprite or thalakos seer

>>53207729
These are also fine suggestioms though you might find them hard to attack with, or in drifter's case too expensive to keep casting.
>>
>>53208051
>>53207729
how does this help me win the game, though?
>>
>>53208088
Spellstutter Sprite is pure tempo and the others dig through your deck for the good shit, spells and ninjas. If you decide to pick up this deck I suggest getting ninja of the deep hours eventually, it's the best card in the theme by a long shot. Okiba-Gang Shinobi is also a great addition as a one or two of.
>>
>>53208051
I'm using Escape Artist because I waifu it hard, and because she's been in my ninja decks for over a decade now, but holy hell how did I not know about the Seer?

>>53207107

So 4 Miscreants and 4 etb are better than 8 unblockables in your opinion?
>>
>>53208153
I'd personally go 4 miscreant 4 thalakos seer, but if you decided you wanted to go hard on a spells subtheme an augur of bolas or archaeomancer could be really juicy. While I cautioned against going all in on the unblockable, you should still rate evasion highly when evaluating cards for the deck.

you need another reanimation spell in color i think, like zombify, to make that deck good. Anyway Greater Sandwurm is a really good card for reanimator, since it's big, hard to block and has cycling.

The problem is that the rest of reanimator spells are uncommon.

Dragonauts suck. I already explained why above. If you absolutely have go, you might try running 1 or 2 in ur delver, for the synergy with spellstutter, hoping you get a lucky ponder into gush into bolt for 6 extra damage, but in something like ur blitz, the difference between wee dragonauts and nivix cyclops is huge.

do you guys play pauper at your LGS? What is the turnout like?
>>

>>
>>53226268
Only two guys play it, one plays Mono U delver and the other plays goblins.
I don't have many problems with my elves deck.
>>
My LGS is starting Paper Pauper.

I play Skred in Modern. What's the closest midrange build?

Also, separate question--apparently the meta is around 50% delver. Lots of blue spells.

How do I fuck delver
>>
>>53227221
Closest midrange is probably Kuldotha Boros, but it has more of a focus on token kills as opposed to big beaters.
If you want to beat delver, play Stompy.
>>
>>53226268
People from my LGS organize evening tournaments in every format except Modern.
Pauper has the biggest turnout (like 12 to 14 people, 8 to 12 for legacy, and 4-8 for casual EDH).

I'd say the players are not the best but it's funny, and the meta is very diverse. Burn and MBC are getting some momentum rn.
>>
>>53226268
My LGS is trying to organize pauper events, but they need momentum. I would love them to manage to fire them consistenly.
>>
>>53188628

>>

with banding creatures, you can any use any to # block/attack per combat. Think of banding as a 'group'. In each of these groups, there may only be one creature in that particular group without bands or banding.

These groups get blocked/block as a single unit, i.e. a single creature.

When a 'group' is blocked/blocks, you decide how the damage is distributed.

If you have a benalish hero 1/1, and a Deadly insect 6/1 in a 'group' and it blocks a rogue elephant 3/3, you can have the elephant deal all 3 of its damage to the benalish hero, as opposed to the opponent deciding to split the damage between the insect/hero. Thus, just your hero dies. Trample damage still carries over, and first strike still damages first.

I dont know how it works with flanking, though.

I am hung up on making a B/G pauper deck. I dont want to go elves, dont want to go dredge/exhume/reanimate. I keep trying to work with pestilence, but am never happy with it. Regen creatures use so much mana, and life gain creatures get killed to easily; however life gain w/o creatures just doesnt feel like it would work in a match..

Elvish Vanguard may not be a lord, but he is a damn good card and he can dodge dead weight (-2/-2), Disfigure (-2/-2), and Galvanic Blast (4 Damage) and many of the best removal spells in pauper. He is dead to terminate, and some other spells, but overall he is very hard to deal.

TCGplayer cart builder has some great options. You can move all your selections into one shop for convenience (which helps with pauper where paying 0.15 per card instead of 0.13 is not an issue) or spread it out to reduce the cost of the order (which helps out with big legacy and vintage orders).

I love cool stuff inc, but they are terrible with keeping pauper staples in stock.

Addressing the translation. I saw the funny translation of Spell Stutter Sprite and figured I would try to compliment your deck in your first or second language.

Spell Stutter Sprite when translated back and forth in Spanish turns into spell spell stutter.

I think Spanish does not have a proper word for Bonesplitter.
>>
>>53244743
I would have been less literal with the translation... Hada interrumpe-hechizos?
Quebrantahuesos is fine for Bonesplitter.

Anyway, yes, they translate things weirdly. Wellwisher is translated as bienechora (she who does good) It took me years to realize that she's supposed to be wishing on a well, and not doing good (well? Lol)

Ninja of the Deep Hours

Pauper is like a lot of formats, it has a few major archetypes that fill out into multiple decks and a few screw balls. Delver has U, UB, and UR versions which all put up results, there are at least two good tron decks, 2 stompy lists, etc. Once you get the base for an archetype it is cheap to fill out the versions.

>>
>>53256266
There are like 6 Decks that you see often in tournaments and its got a couple hundred people who play on MTGO pretty constantly. The common archetypes are Delver variants, Tron variants, Affinity, Stompy, Elves, U/B Control, Boggles, Burn... Affinity is probably the best to pick up going into it, costs like 20 tix online and doesn't really have a terrible matchup.

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/metagame/pauper/full#online
>>
>>53256266
The two ways I know of to get into it are to either get some interest and make a battlebag of 20-30 decks to play casually (they are very cheap) or play on mtgo.

Viable tier 1 decks:
U delver
UR delver
Ur Control
Dimir Control
Mono Green Stompy
Burn
Affinity
Murasa Tron
Mono Black Control
Kuldotha/Boros
Elves
Turbo fog

Tier 2 decks:
Mystical Teachings
Infect
Goblins
Mono U control
Temur Tron
Red Haste (bushwacker red)
Mono Black Aggro

Pauper doesn't have many big game enders, but if you want to ramp, try out Mono green tron

Creatures
---------
4 Fangren Marauder
3 Fierce Empath
2 Maul Splicer
3 Wretched Gryff
3 Ulamog's Crusher

Land tutors and card selection
---------
4 Ancient Stirrings
4 Crop Rotation
4 Expedition Map

Mana fixing
---------
4 Prophetic Prism
4 Chromatic Sphere
4 Chromatic Star

Game ending spells
---------
2 Rolling Thunder

Tron lands
---------
4 Urza's Mine
4 Urza's Power Plant
4 Urza's Tower

Utility lands
---------
1 Bojuka Bog
1 Forest
1 Haunted Fengraf
1 Khalni Garden
1 Sejiri Steppe
1 Shimmering Grotto
1 Tree of Tales

Sideboard
---------
2 Ancient Grudge
2 Circle of Protection: Green
2 Circle of Protection: Red
2 Electrickery
2 Leave No Trace
3 Reap and Sow
1 Relic of Progenitus
1 Tangle

The creatures you cast from there are some of the biggest beaters in the format. You get a sweet ammount of tutors to shape your hand and a sweet toolbox in Crop rotation. Want to finish tron? Search the missing piece! Want to save a creature? Get sejiri steppe! Want to revive a big creature? Haunted fengraf!

It's cheap (sub 25 tixs), powerful and really enjoyable to play once you get the hang of it.

If you fancy more control, there is murasa and dinrova tron, which play super neat counter/removal game and follow up with dirty big mana spells.

I built a UR burn deck right after Thunder became a common. Thermo-Alchemist feels right at home in a UR shell, and Delver of Secrets is pretty much a Nacatl. Plus Tandem Lookout became a common in Eternal Masters as well, and pairing it with Alchemist feels outright silly sometimes.
>>
>>53259813
I play an izzet faeries deck with that combo. I found that tandem lookout is just better than ninja, as you can hit with fliers to draw, and if there is an opening draw two off of one guy. Essentially Blue Bob.

4 spellstutter sprite
4 zephyr sprite
4 faerie miscreant
4 tandem-lookout
4 thermo-alchemist
4 counterspell
4 lightning bolt
4 skred
2 echoing truth
4 preordain
4 faithless looting
8 evolving wild/terramorphic expanse
Twice as many snow covered island as mountains.

You mean "Soul Crushing Spells"

_ _ _ _ _

2 Rolling Thunder

Every time Rolling Thunder resolves it usually signals the game is over or puts the opponents really far off from winning.

Suggestions for early interactions:
Flame Slash?
>>
>>53260946
>flame slash
You could, but it clashes with the deckplan. The deck wants to get tron ASAP and cast fatties. Early game is reserved to finding tron, casting ancient stirrings, expedition maps and crop rotation. Mid-lategame you have 7-13 mana to work with, so why spend a card slot for a 1 mana removal when you have huge 7+ mana spells available?. Also good luck casting it early game. You could use eggs to get red mana turn 2-3, but it will slow you down a lot.
>>
>>53257779
Man, I never played Tron in any format ever until I played it in Pauper and I can see why everyone prefers the Murasa version, Temur Tron is fucking depressing against stuff like Burn, G1 you can't do shit until they're easily within Fireblast zone, and G2 is "mulligan until you hit CoP:Red".

It's not bad though, gaining ten life off two Marauders and watching the life flee from your opponent is pretty solid.

Pauper lists tend to be similar to Legacy ones: there is a large number of viable decks but brews tend to be too weak to play well. For instance Murasa Tron is basically Temur Tron with 2 cards changed out but was hugely different in play, and decks like UR and UB control share MUC cores.

My list is still pretty stock, I'm thinking about replacing the Compulsive with a Deep Analysis, but other that I don't really think I would change much. Might even run two Deep Analysis and cut the Mind Games.
>>
>>53234317
there's still tortured existence, infect, and my favorite aristoctats

Actually, Murasa is UR splashing green for pulse. UR comes from the times of Cloudpost and has emphasis on removal more than on wincons.

RUG Tron aims to get Tron much faster and drop fatties (Fangreen Marauder, Ulamog Crusher) asap.

They are completely different decks. More than just a few switched cards, just like Legacys RUG and BUG delver qre completely different besides sharing 2 colors and delvers.
>>
>>53294015
>Mind Games
Why not just another capsize?
>>
>>53294233
I am too drunk to debate this right now, but I will say that I acknowledge your point but still think they share enough cards that transferring from one to another is not like switching from MUC to Delver, but like switching between delver variants.

That's a shame, but I imagine the pool of viable commons is quite small, leading to a largely 'solved' or at least highly-optimized meta.
I pine for the day I can play a Naya critters deck in some format and not just get assfucked by everything remotely competitive.

Looks good, I would like to know why you went with firebolt over lightning bolt, and no burning tree emissary.
>>
>>53298431
Uh I run both?

I tested burning tree over river boa; boa tested out far superior. Burning is a power common card but is much better in a mostly mono red
>>
>>53298460
Oh god my brain, the signed ones are bolts...

Boa always seemed sideboard to me, but I tend to be the blue side so what do I know.
>>
>>53294015
Why not Diabolic Edict over Devour Flesh? It's strictly better.

I'm also not a fan of Mind Games and Capsize, the meta has sped up too much for those kinds of shenanigans. I would cut those two.

Not that anon, but the life gain is barely relevant to the opponent considering you often win by milling them. And it has the edge case benefit of letting you sacrifice one of your own creatures (post-board) if you desperately need the life.

I hate custom tokens, call me autistic but I won't fuck custom anything unless it stritctly adhears to the same structure or format as wizards tokens.

I'd be super down for tokens with custom art but the lack of consistency bugs me too much in the current market.
>>
>>53306591
Looks good senpai, but I would cut Capsize. It's too slow for the current meta, Stompy is sanic speed nowadays. Also cut back on edict effects and run more disfigure, they've become less valuable also thanks to Stompy. I'd run one more Justice and four Augur of Bolas to dig into your shit as well as chumpblock 2/2 forever.

I'm more interested in your SB
>>
>>53309976
>I'm more interested in your SB

Don't have one - We tend to play casually/for fun, so nobody has an SB.

No, it got banned for enabling degenerate combos, similar to peregrine drake.
>>
Wow, this thread is still up!

I designed a new deck that does well playing an aristocrats strategy along with a lot of artifacts along with Kuldotha Rebirth and Atog. It is really flexible, you can make one huge creature, a lot of small ones, or you can burn your opponent out.

Ice Age unironically had some of the best art for reprints - Counterspell, Swords to Plowshares, and Disenchant come to mind here
>>
>>53310837
With Tron you just shoot a Rolling Thunder for 20+ or cast the same Ulamog's Crusher for the fifth time after you've overloading their answers with Haunted Fengraf and Mulldrifter drawing you gas all the time. 4 Firebolts is also 16 damage by themselves.

I see what you're trying to do anon, and I like it, but your mother and I are just worried that you're not attempting the most optimal way to do it. Where's Burning Tree and Rancor? Those Mogg Fanatic friends of yours aren't exactly the best influences right now, and are you sure your relationship with that boy Hooting Mandrill is sustainable? You know he eats a whole graveyards to come in, you sure you can afford him in your life? You're not always going to have your friend Wild Mongrel to feed him, you know, and the day will come when he'll eat something dear to you like that Firebolt.

What I'm saying is that maybe for a Burn-Madness-Zoo shell where the goal is to fill out your graveyard, you'd still wanna cut maybe a Blastoderm and a Mandrills or two for that BTE speed. And your slowest aggro card should be cut in favour of Rancor. But hey I'm just an autist who hasn't even touched your deck so you do you. Maybe you're all in on that midrange game I'm not seeing in this list.
>>
>>53309415
Be a man, anon, DO IT! I adapted this list for Modern for my wife, Tribal Flames for 5 is one of the best feelings one could ever ask for.

Although I think you should run some degree of Heliod's Pilgrim and Brainstorm + Ash Barrens to help power out the Nylea's Presence combo better, the deck doesn't seem to have its legs without Domain online.
>>
Is there such thing as a cheap modern deck that wins by turn four?
>>
>>53325460
MonoR Burn under ideal circumstances (aka MCL). Dredge is the cheapest actual deck along with Affinity, the former's just better though.
>>
What does everyone think of the new weekly challenge? It seems like a good payoff for pauper players, as first place is worth more than a collection of decks.
>>
>>53242694
I think it just comes down to mulligans, but yea, when you play 7 cards on turn one and are topdecking the rest of the game, you can get hosed pretty bad, especially with any kind of mass artifact removal

I fell out of playing MTG about two years back when my buddy moved out of state, but I always wanted to throw together a pauper deck.

All I really remember was planing to use Poison Slivers and changelings and the whole deck was all 2 and 3 cost cards, I should really get back into magic.
>>
>>53325838

>>
>>53338691
What would no-banlist pauper look like? I assume it would just be Cranial Affinity v Cruise Delver v Storm?
>>
>>53325460
Storm is fairly cheap as far as Modern decks go and is easily tier 1. Don't expect that to last too long though with WotC's hard on for creature based aggro.
>>
>>53340161
I dont think so. I think it would make a spectrum, with infect and affinity outrunning storm but losing to delver, delver losing to drake and 8post, and atorm beating drakepost.

I just assembled a Grixis Delver deck. I'm so fucking tired of seeing everyone playing Delver, or Gurmag Angler or Thermo-Alchemist in my meta, that I just put them together. Here is the list, wat think:

Main deck:
4 Delver of Secrets
4 Thermo Alchemist
4 Gurmag Angler
4 Brainstorm
4 Ponder
2 Preordain
2 Agony Warp
4 Lightning Bolt
3 Terminate
3 Manamorphose
2 Diabolic Edict
2 Spell Pierce
3 Mana Leak
4 Evolving Wilds
3 Swiftwater Cliffs
3 Dismal Backwater
5 Island
2 Mountain
2 Swamp

Sideboard:
2 Nihil spellbomb
4 Pyroblast
4 Hydroblast
2 Electrickery
2 Stormbound Geist
1 Evincar's Justice

My metagame is full of Burn and MBC, also Elves, Boros Kuldotha/Metalcraft, Affinity and Murasa/Tron. I'm not convinced by Manamorphose as I don't always have a red mana, and I think I'll replace Diabolic Edict with Chainer's Edict as soon as I get them in the mail. The sideboard is not great either but I have no idea...

Also slivers in pauper is rad, they can do some INSANE shit if they curve out.
