What's your favorite sort of fantasy weapon, anon? It can be as conservative or wild as you like, as long as you spit it out.

For instance, I'm a delusional shieldfag.
>>
>>53182762
I like typical fantasy weapons (swords, axes, what have you) but with ornate or impractical design flair.

But if I had to pick one fantasy weapon as my favorite I guess I'd go with spear.
>>
>>53182762

>>
Daggerfag here, I accepted long ago that I'm not a warrior.
Also a big fan of staves and fencing blades.
>>
>>53182762
I like the idea of absurdly powerful weapons that look like absolutely ordinary version of themselves.

A great fan of axes once, i'm re-evaluating hammers and greatswords
>>
Longswords, duh.
Spears especially winged ones are close contender.
>>
Shields are great, sword & board is my favorite fighting style by far, but I also acknowledge that they're fragile and tend to smash apart in any remotely prolonged combat: vikings carried like three of them for duels for a reason. So you'd need a weapon that can be wielded with either one or two hands, effective either way.

For that, you'll want bastard sword.

I do like glaives too, though.
>>
>>53183786
bastard swords don't actually exist.

Bastard sword, mechanically it is the most versatile. Being able to switch between one and two handed, pair it with a shield or a second weapon. In older editions the damage against large creatures was decent enough. Shield would be my second favorite, also for versatility.

Damn, first answer stole what I was gonna say. But yeah, this. I love weapons that look real and useful, but with maybe like, 20-30% extra. Maybe they're a little too big, or the blade has pointless holes in it, the guard is overly big and ornate, it's curved in an odd way or something. Like it's still totally a real ass weapon, but unless you're more than just a regular guy, or the weapon has more to it than just metal and wood, it wouldn't be optimal.

Though it might be because making those kinds of weapons is a hobby of mine.

Naginata. Or a fauchard but those vary in shape enough that sometimes they're not what I want.

I want a pointy thing on a long stick to stab things with before they can hurt me. I'd also appreciate being able to trip or chop but those are secondary to not getting it caught on something like the scrub I am so I'd rather not go full halberd.

>>
>>53183815
So it's an ugly shortspear that you can bludgeon people with like a quarterstaff? I mean, a fork could do the same, but be more effective, and was a commonly used tool.
>>
>>53182762
Anything versatile and effective. Preferably easy to maintain. Halberds, lucerne hammers, billhooks, pollaxes, all adorned with hooks and spikes capable of thrusting attacks and disarming of shields. For a more up-close fight a flanged mace or handaxe would be fine, accompanied by a spiked shield.
Sure, none of these are very fantasy-y, but practicality outweighs muh edgy superkatana every day.

>>53184703
I just looked up some stuff about executioner swords and found "Terminus Est"
>Terminus Est is described as being "Light to raise, weighty to descend." This is due to (in addition to the obvious ethical quandary, in that raising the sword causes no harm, but the descending stroke ends a life by decapitation) a channel in the spine of the blade, containing liquid hydrargyrum, another name for mercury. (Wolfe makes use of obscure terms from Latin and Greek in many of his works, and in the New Sun Cycle additionally makes heavy use of French and Spanish.)
>"Light to raise, weighty to descend."
>a channel in the spine of the blade, containing... mercury.
Does that make any kind of sense? I get that it's referring to momentum, but would that work at all in real life? Do you think you'd need some special way to lift/swing to get it to work?
>>
>>53187979
Sort of, but lighter, more flexible and designed for unarmored combat.
>>

>>
>>53188008
>Do you think you'd need some special way to lift/swing to get it to work?
Not really. Most of the sword's weight would be in the hilt when you raise it due to mercury flowing downhill through the channel. When you swing it, momentum carries the mercury back up the channel to the tip of the sword, increasing the weight and cutting power. There wouldn't be a real need to change how you hold or swing it.

I've got a soft spot in my heart for the king of retarded, impractical fantasy weapons - the warglaive.
>>
>>53189037
I can actually see that kind of weapon working in context. Demon Hunters wade into battle with dozens of demons by themselves, meaning they're usually surrounded. If you look at the ingame animations, you'll see that the ready position has one glaive is held in front and the other behind. This is to let you parry from any direction.

As for smacking people without hurting yourself, notice how every strike uses the rear blade to hit, and how the entire torso twists with every swing, also keeping the other glaive on the opposite side to keep up your defensive coverage.

It's still silly, but not completely without logic.
>>
>>53189300
Yeah, it can work kinda, you just need superhuman strength, speed and reflexes, which WC elves have even before getting juiced up on demon shit.

I usually favor blunt weapons, or something exotic. Flails are fun, and nunchucks are awesome but don't really fit these kinds of settings unless you're a monk or what have you. Big freaking hammers are always a good choice.

Halberds, Glaives/Naginata are really cool, planning on my next D&D character to be a fat but weirdly athletic and acrobatic fighter who uses a Naginata.

Also got a soft spot for Scimitars, Greatswords and the good Ol' Morningstar. I feel like maces, morningstars and flails get poor representation, no one seems to want to use them in my games.
>>
>>53183799
first of all yeah, the thread is talking about fantasy weapons.

second, yeah they totally did, but it was a classification, not an actual weapon. A sword big enough that it would have to be slung across the back, but light enough to weild in one hand - they were, back in the times, generally called "hand and a half" swords. There were lots of different swords that fit into this category. Granted, not many were used, like greatswords they weren't hugely practical, however they absolutely existed.

>>53186859
Except that spike is made for armor piercing. It's not gonna do as much damage as any other kinda blade you'd find on a spear, but you find some faggot in armor (chain, plate, what have you) lying on the ground and you can start putting holes in it.

They're cheap as god damn shit to make and easy as god damn shit to use. Hand em out to every guy that you don't trust to hold a real weapon and tell em to stab the shit out of any clinking cunt that gets knocked down.

With a horseshoe worth of iron and a stick you turn a worthless peasant into someone that might very possible fuck up your expensive armor. Worst case they actually kill you and can you just imagine how fucking embarrassing that would be? Not quite up to par when you're waging war on your terms, but sometimes you're not, sometimes you're stuck in your castle with nought but your guards and any peasants that managed to make it here before the gates closed. And the only guy who knows how to work a forge is a ferrier.
>>
>>53192169

(spikey) spears =/= real weapon?

That's a strange statement.
>>
>>53192319
I mean yes it's still a weapon, but it's exceptionally limited. It serves a very similar purpose as those daggers, misericorde I think, used to finish off injured soldiers wearing lots of armor. When I say "real weapon" I mean, if you give a proper spear or a sword and shield or something to someone untrained, they're not going to utilize it very well. You can do a lot and have a lot of impact with those weapons, but only if you have the proper training.

On the other hand, the short stick with a pokey bit? Not much to learn about that. It means that exceptional skill won't improve your effectiveness with it very much, but lack of skill won't reduce it's effectiveness either. It's perfect for combatants with little or no training.

When I say real weapon I mean something that you give to a soldier. Because the soldier has trained to use it to it's full potential. The short pointy stick doesn't have much potential. The same way you'd say "now that's a real man" or "now that's a real burger" etc. A pointy stick is obviously a weapon, but a halberd or a sword or an ax? Now that's a real weapon.

Most people think of the whippy Crouching Tiger wushu sword and its real equivalent, the scholar jian (which was lighter and thinner and closer to the European smallsword in purpose). They had thick war jians though.

17th century swords are my fetish, particularly with minimalist hilt designs. They're sort of austere and practical but with just enough room for a smith to impart a bit of subtle character
>>
>>53182762
I really do like the sword and shield imagery, even more when the shield also functions as a scabbard (see Patroklos from Soul Calibur)
But my favourite weapons in a practical sense are the crossbow, the spear or the halberd and the war mace (the long ones, I love having range advantage).
I think it's really neat when they are ornated or decorated, specially when there's some kind of imagery or iconography, such as depictions of saints angels and all that jazz.

Even in reality one blades impact isn't lile anothers.
Axes have a higher impact because more energy is focused in a single point of contact.

In Monster Hunter the benefit of sword mode is that the weapon gains the benefit of a phial which adds damage or poison or paralysis

The weapon also has a chainsaw mode where it shotguns the contents of the phial into an explosion

It's such a piece of shit, barely even a wall hanger. It's flimsy, super heavy, the steel is crap and it's one solid piece of metal. You're right to hate it, I hate it too. But it was a fun project and whipping it around like I'm some faggot in KH is a guilty pleasure.

Reminds me of a thread discussing centaur civilization and what it would be like. The idea I came up with is that Centaurs with bows is retarded, as the addition of horseparts doesn't let you shoot a bigger bow or more accurately. However if you had a sling... You can use your entire body weight to power the throw of a sling, meaning centaurs could use huge slings, whipping their whole lower half into the throw and reaching distances far beyond what most other races would be capable of. Obviously close skirmishes they'd still have a major advantage with the bow because mounted cavalry, but they'd be the kings of long range warfare and especially sieges, as they'd be able to accomplish near artillery level fire with comparatively little equipment. Not to mention that since everyone is their own horse power, they'd have far better supply lines able to quickly and competently move far more supplies (including big siege machines), much faster and competently than other civs.

Man centaurs are so underexplored, there's so much to consider when everyone has a horse for a butt.

Was its primary purpose killing things? If yes then it's a real weapon.

A goedendag is only used to kill shit. Just because it was cheap to manufacture and easy to use doesn't mean it has any less value than a spear or a hammer, two weapons whose functions can be performed by the goedendag. Also I'm not sure what you kean when you say that being skilled in its use wouldn't be much benefit. If you're skilled in the use of a weapon, any weapon, it has a tangible effect on the effectiveness of that weapon. It's not as romantic or fancy as a sword or poleaxe, but the same can be said about an AK-47 and a fully tricked out AR15.

A French army with 2,500 knights and noblemen was wrecked by a bunch of militia from Flanders. It was believed that a knight was equal to ten footmen at the time, so the power goedendag was quite a shock. It got replaced by the halberd and warhammer though.

Speaking of which, the halberd is my favorite. A versatile weapon for the commoners to fight each other and nobles. I especially like the late era Swiss ones with longer shafts and more solid axeheads with just enough area to hook with the front rather than the backspike.

I have a soft spot for the Falx and Khopesh as well.Shields are for losers, unless its a Pelta accompanied by a small spear or some javelins. For ranged weapons, small-ish crossbows and composite recurve shortbows are cool, especially if the shortbow has one of those cool leather bow holster things some kinds of horse archers had.

Dude chill out, I used the term "real weapon" in a colloquial sense, not a literal one. Yes literally any fucking object you can kill someone with can be called a weapon, your semantic bullshit has proven to everyone that you're so smart and handsome. Meanwhile any human being who doesn't require another human being to wipe up their spittle can understand what the fuck I was actually saying.

And if you want to compare it to guns then it wouldn't be an AK, it would be a saturday night special. Obviously it's still a gun, but it's not what you would consider arming a military force with.
