I'm a fan of the "this area is the resting place of a giant, unknown creature that died there thousands of years ago" trope to establish a place/land as creepy. With their massive, fossilized bones integrated into the landscape/mountainside.

Usually works pretty well, if cliche. It's ominous, and doesn't really have to factor into the direct plot unless you want it to.

Spooky mansion. Lagoon monsters. Cannibals. Cultists. Zombie pirates. Tiki war god. Active volcano connected to hell. Bermuda Triangle weather conspiracy. Crab people. Gay crab people. Gay crab people on meth.

One of those is bound to stick.
