What's a good system for a game set in the Quadrail universe? I tried kludging together a homebrew for some friends who read the books, but it never quite worked.

For those unfamiliar with the setting.
>Sci-fi, near future, tech is slightly more advanced than the present day, but nothing super paradigm changing, you don't have things like uploading brains to VR or to wholesale cybernetic replacement of bodies, etc.
>Only major change is that there IS FTL travel. This is dominated by a weird mechanical race known as the "Spiders", who hold a monopoly on the tech.
>They've used it to build these literal train stations in orbit of various systems, where you can ride trains/ships across the galaxy at a rate of roughly 1 lightyear a minute.
>The stations are essentially an elaborate illusion/security center. They don't want anyone else tumbling onto the secret of FTL, so they ban, and enforce this ban with extraordinarily sophisticated sensors, any weapons (and weapons is extremely broadly defined. "Glass bottles" are considered too dangerous to take on their trains), as well as any equipment which might help a curious scientist figure out how their FTL works.
>The books themselves deal with a cosmic menace that would get spoilery to talk about, but most of what we had envisioned for the campaigns would be kind of corporate investigation/espionage stuff, with frequent needs to travel and plan around what are largely rigid schedules of these trains, as well as switching on and off to environments where there are no weapons beyond what you can invent on the spot out of mostly very soft materials.

Anyone have any recommendations?

That sounds like a cyberpunk game minus the cybernetics.

And with a vastly more faux-victorian tone rather than a dystopic one based on 1980s values.

But you think I should be looking to modify something like Shadowrun?

So, this is a question that doesn't deserve its own thread, so I'll post it here. What's a good system to use for a sci-fi setting that relies heavily on interplanetary travel, namely one with good ship mechanics? I'm trying to create the whole space-NEET feeling of Starbound while not actually basing it on the game (that game's lore isn't bad, though). I'm a Dee en Dee fag and so are my players, so I'm not familiar with any sci-fi systems.

Inb4 pic related. I'm not opposed to it, but I'd like some thing more specialized.

OP what you want is Dungeon World

It's pretty much objectively one of the best currently out there. It has fast easy to use mechsnics and is perfect for beginners, it's a lot cheaper than most of these other rules bloated systems that cost fifty dollars. There is no reason for extra rules when it is he role playing that matters. Dungeon World is fast and innovative and still feels exactly like the spirit of ADND before DnD 3.5 destroyed the hobby and ruined a generation of role players.

You want fast, intuitive combat? Dungeon World does that.

You want real, deep roleplaying mechanics? Dungeon World does that.

You want great mechanics that reward diversity of play? Dungeon World does that as well.

My last session of Dungeon World my human fighter wrapped a vampire in a bear hug and wrestled him out a window. This is real roleplaying we are talking about here, not babby 3.5 shit. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Dungeon World today, it is an evolution and perfection of the half-formed ideas in Apocalypse World (the game it is derived from)

Traveler seems to be what you should look at first.

He's an idiot, but PbtA actually has some pretty good stuff for investigation/espionage stuff. The Sprawl and Blades in the Dark are both pretty good.

Thanks for the recommendations, but what's PbtA?
>>
>>53131950
The system for Apocalypse World and all its hacks

Traveller. Anything else that works probably cribbed notes from Traveller.

Every space faring game I know has either cribbed from or directly rejected traveller. Its the UR example for this sort of game just as D&D is for fantasy. Traveller still holds up though. AD&D is friggin weird.

Not every piece of traveller is pure gold, and my group has never gotten it to work, but for a campaign with a focused vision like you are saying, it would work wonders.

Powered by the Apocalypse.

In short >>53131986

A bit longer, PbtA games are specialist games with rules focused on a certain playstyle; the above two mostly on espionage in different settings (cyberpunk/magi-steampunk IIRC).

They are focused, but also easy to modify.

That's why he should use Dungeon World. he could easily hack it to anything he wants.
