So I know anything from StarCraft would get bodied by 40k (particularly the Zerg, who can't hold a candle to the Tyranids), but how badly? The Protoss particularly seem like they'd hold up well due to their advanced technology and quasi-Webway.

Terrans overall seem like they're roughly on par with the Sisters of Battle; the average Sororitas is a highly trained, disciplined, and fanatical warrior-nun wielding power armor and a gun the size of a table that shoots rocket-propelled grenades; the average Marine is a hardened criminal full of rage, piss, and combat stimulants, wielding power armor and a gun the size of a table that shoots foot-long depleted uranium spikes.

Same issue with Battlecock. It is better to speed up the game, but I can't shake the feeling of my guys committing sudoku. Because the thing looks like the ork mob rule when they hit each other and more models die.

Can only fire pistols in CC during the shooting phase though, so not that much help on the turn a unit charges. Unless you fire the pistols before charging ofcourse.
But depending on how much people are gonna walk their units out of melee, pistols might actually see little use whilst in a close combat. Though that still doesn't stop you from firing them into the backs of those cowardly retreating enemies, ofcourse !

The trick is to disengage CC, and letting another unit fire at the enemy in your turn, if you're a shooty army.

Hopefully units are at least allowed to consiledate when no longer in CC. That way they can at least dash for cover or something.

The unit running out of close combat no longer being allowed to run, shoot, or charge is nice and all, but the rest of the army around it has no such penalties. Guess it's gonna be more about charging the most important units first, rather than just charging anything in sight and rolling up gunlines from there.

As for how easy they are, they kind of aren't. Converting them can be a pain, and unless DKOK FW models are an option for you, you are kind of stuck with just the same 20ish poses for your entire list. I don't mind, since I don't like any of the plastic options GW has released for guard, but it does kind of suck not to be able to do more than just stick bits to them to differentiate them.

It's been a while since I read Skitarii but I'm sure there will be some way to fill the mandatory HQ, ether some special rule or with AdMech like you describe. There's already that combined FOC for them.

They are most likely going to rolling them together, since most people wanted them to be a single faction and even the start collecting box had the AdMech HQ even if the box was technically for the Skitarii

Also they aren't the only faction without an HQ. There are the Harlequins too, and in their case they either turn one of their elite units (or the sergeant of the troop unit) into and HQ or they'll have to be rolled back into the two other versions of Eldars which I'm strongly against. Mono-Harlequins or riot

I think you could field them as either, since both technically have rules for both Loyalist and Renegade.

I think the best addition would be something with long range, either the Battle Cannon or the Gatling gun, to offer some distance fire support. The fallen have special weapons and melta covered, so they can focus on getting in close.

Thanks for the advice. I don't mind being restricted pose-wise, but it would be a bummer to lose out on the more esoteric options for things like command units and Rough Riders. Still, the infantry look so much better than Cadians that I'm very tempted.

It was like this before the Emperor even unified Terra. The planet had been a barren, radioactive hellhole for centuries before the Emperor even started the Unification wars. There's just no fixing it at this point - it's been blasted to hell and back by millenia of human and machine wars to the point where it doesn't even have oceans anymore. Why the Emperor decided to make it the seat of the Imperium after all this is baffling honestly. Not even human heritage of our birth world is worth living on a radioactive crater.

Symbolism, mostly. The Emperor himself doesn't care about symbolic values that much, but understands how much they mean to humanity. With how many lost and isolated human colonies scattered over the worlds had myths and legends about humanity's cradle planet, it's easy to understand that "We have come from humanity's birth world to re-unite it" sounds better than "Yeah so humanity's birth world was kinda fucked up, all radioactive wastelands and such, so we abandoned it."
