Many city-states house a population of automatons. Also known as robots, autobodies, and mechanized infantry, these artificial humanoids were mass-produced by city-states lacking in population but rich in resources to fill out the ranks of armies and work forces. They were initially programmed with a primitive AI that allowed them to follow orders and make basic decisions, but remained little more than machines. Over time, however, some came to be endowed with the spark of sapience. How exactly this came to be, or is in fact even possible, is unknown, but the fact remains that one out of ever hundred automatons will 'awaken'. Suddenly finding themselves possessing free will and personality in a world made for humans, these creatures have met varying degrees of acceptance in different parts of the world. Some have integrated into human society as second-class citizens facing heavy discrimination, while others maintain a charade of still being simple machines while living a double life outside of their created purpose.
